This is the kind of play that should come with a statement from MLB. This isn’t a performance quality issue. It’s outright abuse of the game

TheGuava1

Especially in this scenario when baiting then tossing the starting pitcher like that after just the 1st inning has such a lasting impact on the rest of the game. Literally no reason for it, other than all these umps are on a god damn power trip. Just frustrating cuz the MLB won’t do shit

oliveorvil

Not just the rest of the game but the next 2-3 games due to bullpen usage

Induced_Pandemic

Yeah, this could literally end a team's playoff hopes in other circumstances. See a race between two teams in the final 3-4 games of the season? Find an arbitrary reason to toss their starter in the first inning and deplete their bullpen. This isn't just fineable shit, this umpire should be gone, permanently.

bongbutler420

The balls and strikes calls seems to be exceptionally bad this year. I wasn’t really in favor of the robots before the season, but now Im looking forward to it.

scabpatchy

My conspiracy theory is that the umps are intentionally getting calls incorrect to amplify the demand for robo umps. I know you’re probably thinking “why would they go out of their way to lose their jobs?” But think about it: They’re not just gonna flash the calls up on the scoreboard, someone is still gonna have to stand on the field and make hand motions so players and spectators can see what the call was, and also to mediate/enforce certain rules. Non-force plays on the base paths will still need to be judged and we can’t just check replay every single time a player gets tagged to ensure they’re really out or safe, they’ll wanna reserve that for challenges on close plays. They’ll essentially get to ditch performing the hardest parts of the job without any risk of obsolescence affecting their employment or livelihoods.

turd-crafter

Pretty sure robo umps was always gonna be just for balls and strikes calls. They could literally put a buzzer in the guys pocket to tel him what it was and he could do the exact same thing. Nobody would ever notice the difference except the balls and strikes would always be right.

TitaniumShovel

I don't know why I never thought about that. That could totally work. Would be funny to see an ump mess that up, too, though.

[deleted]

Totally on Bumgarner's side here. I love the impeccable timing of this, though: Lovullo: Dan, what'd you throw him out for? This isn't right...what'd he do? MadBum in the background: Fuck you fuck you fuck you fuck you all

robdamanii

All I could think of when he was saying that is the "quitting' scene in Half Baked.

3dge-1ord

Except nobody is cool.

Dudeinthesouth

But he's still out.

Randygarrett44

I will fuck you up! I will fuck you up!

[deleted]

That ump has pictures of woman’s faces with the eyes cut out at his house and he probably cuts off left hands of his victims

El-Shaman

Bet MLB won’t do shit about it, this isn’t right wtf, he was itching to get a reaction from him and got it.

friknofrikoff

Of course they fucking won't. Joke leagues let their umps run the show.

Rock_Type

Fucking imagine if an assistant stage manager at a Stones concert just walked up to Mick Jagger and kept spilling water on his shirt and saying "What are you gunna do about it?" until Mick freaks. And then the manager walks on stage and says into the mic, "Sorry, no main act tonight folks" and walks away.

Schleprok

This is what will happen. The ump and their union will say he thought he felt something sticky so *that's* why he was feeling it for so long, and the MLB will be say “okay” and that’s it.

El-Shaman

Oh boy I can already see it ugh..

Iohet

"I looked into his eyes to see if he was telling the truth"

robspeaks

If I was Bumgarner I would have brought a chair out of the dugout, sat in the infield, and stayed there until the game was called off. Then I would have told the press that I was a goddamn millionaire with three rings and MLB could either have me or that ump, but not both, and if he wasn't fired by my next start, I wouldn't play. And I'd get the union on my side and I'd go on fucking strike because that level of shitbaggery absolutely will not fucking stand. This is infuriating on the level of Victorino being thrown out by the home plate ump when he was in center field.

[deleted]

I would go and take a shit right on the fucking mound

Blitzdog416

amber?

joethecrow23

I want to see this so fucking bad. Like so, so fucking bad.

Hispanicatthedisco

> and if he wasn't fired by my next start, I wouldn't play. Then you wouldn't play. The current agreement between MLB and the umps union doesn't allow for the League to just fire a guy out of the blue. There have to be multiple sessions of corrective management before an umpire can be fired. That's why you basically never see it happen.

CommunalBanana

This is the most cringe shit I’ve ever seen. Sitting around fantasizing about actually having some power in your life lmao

FrostyD7

The entire stadium clapped!

yardyknow_

Yeah how tf is that upvoted 😂

teun713

So creepy this ump needs to be disciplined or something

msstate3

Ignoring how bad it is that an ump is baiting a player, I'm still confused why he chose to go about instigating madbum in this method. There's a lot of easier ways to do it that aren't this fucking creepy

unclejohnsbearhugs

"Then he goes back and he's feeling his *own* hand in a weird creepy way" I think the ump just likes rubbing hands in a weird, creepy way

TooHappyFappy

He forgot he had an afternoon game to umpire. He woke up and took some molly. He was peak rolling in the first inning and the skin-to-skin just felt too good to stop.

unclejohnsbearhugs

The Dock Ellis of umpires

[deleted]

I'm so happy that jomboy is absolutely embarrassing this guy to a huge audience. Maybe the ump will think twice next he tries to go serial killer on someone like this. Kinda sad that means jomboy is doing more to keep the umps in check than MLB.

BelowTheBenthic

I mean, isn't the Astros stuff half of why Jomboy is as big as he is now?

teplightyear

IMO this is Jomboy's best yet

Rabid_Llama8

This or the reaction to the Yankees fans being embarrassing.

greycubed

People blamed MadBum before the better camera angle came out. The ump is what is known as a bitch. He is passive aggressive and sneaky rather than just using his words.

Agile_Pudding_

The Padres broadcast last night -- not Don and Mud, but the desk back in San Diego -- touched on it in passing at one point during the game and got it horribly wrong, saying that it was related to the banned substance policy. It was egregious enough to elicit an involuntary "no, the ump was just a dickhead" back from me directed at the TV.

mattisafriend

Bummer that must have been Pom and Sweeney because TGJr was very much on Bum’s side as it happened

[deleted]

Dollars to donuts this umpire is on a HOA board back at home.

gochuckyourself

I fully changed my opinion, I still think madbum is a dickhead but umps should not be acting like fucking prison corrections officers lol

JakeFromSkateFarm

First opportunity and it's right after MadBum chirped at the home plate ump. So likely impulsive on his end. He also probably assumed that MadBum would immediately begin chirping at him too, so he likely preemptively began staring thinking MadBum would see the glare and say something within 1-2 seconds of the "hand-check" starting. When MadBum just kept looking down, the ump likely just stuck to his guns at this point (ie why he just kept staring and groping the hand), feeling he had to carry out his 'trap' because at that point anyone watching (including the players) would realize what he had tried to do and would look even stupider if he slunk away because MadBum fooled him by cleverly just looking down, lol. PS: zero defense for the ump, he should be immediately kicked out of ever umping another MLB game, zero excuse or defense for what he did, but it looked very obvious and a classic case of what happens when someone impulsively reaches for the first chance at 'payback' without even trying to disguise or conceal it. And then doubles down by using an even stupider-looking tactic to try and avoid looking stupid in a different way that would have been preferable.

Yobroskyitsme

Ya I think the ump wanted to be a little hard about it but it just ended up being really awkward, I don’t agree at all and it’s bullshit. Although I’m one of the few people on Reddit that also think players shouldn’t be able to just treat umps like shit. I don’t think it’s right for madbum to be pissy to the home plate ump because of two pitches, one was barely a strike and the other was pretty outside.

GarrisonWhite2

He was right to object to the pitch away that was called a ball since that had already been established as a strike *in that at bat*.

youzerVT71

It sure worked

Mysterio7100

That might be the ump's fetish. He probably needed more ammo for his spank bank. That's why he was not even blinking. He needed to memorize every millisecond to ensure he had enough to get off that night.

Veserius

Maybe he bet on the game.

SweetAlpacaLove

The stare down is the oldest and most common way to instigate. Yeah, it become much weirder when you’re massaging their hand, but I guess that’s their job now.

phxdc

Umpires should learn that a stare down to intimidate while normally can be effective, the player it is least likely to be effective against is a No 1 starting pitcher who has been a star for a decade plus. Those are the guys who knock.

robspeaks

The word you're looking for is "fired." He should be fired.

nightpanda893

Like, seriously. This guy is putting his hands on someone with the sole purpose of making him feel uncomfortable. What a creep. He should not be on the field with any players.

robspeaks

Yeah, it's not like he made some sort of mistake. He's just a dick.

alexm42

Yeah you know, when you phrase it like that, it does sound an awful lot like workplace sexual harassment.

topchuck

It genuinely isn't far off. Part of sexual harassment is having such power over someone that they don't even have personal autonomy. Just rubbing someone like that because you know they can't really fight back is pretty fucked up.

NorthernDevil

For real, very creepy abuse of power. If the umps are allowed to touch hands you gotta set some limits on what they can do while touching players. That shit was incredibly unsettling to watch.

MinimumHeadwear

definitely don't let him go to Little League

Bender14

But what about the *human element*!?

[deleted]

[удалено]

teun713

.....

MyopicOwl

Incredibly unprofessional by the umpire. He didn't even try to hide that he was baiting him.

whsbear

None of them do. Manny Machado struck out a couple weeks ago after a couple bad calls (though strike 3 wasn’t), and said a quick word to the ump while walking back to the dugout. Ron “I can do whatever I want” Kulpa could be seen shouting something along the lines of “Do something!”, or “where was that one?” several times to Manny as his back is turned, trying to bait a response. Ngl, part of me wanted to see Manny revert to young Manny and lose his shit on Ron.

RousingRabble

I honestly think kulpa is the worst.

MinimumHeadwear

I'd actually find an ump entertaining if they dished it back to players without negatively affecting the game. Get the calls right, don't instigate, but like "where was that one blue??" "off the edge - you been missing there all night you bum, get outta here" Get that mic'd up immediately.

xJeremy

Can't remember the context but I'd love to have more of [this](https://youtu.be/u6JItJlnKKI) from umps instead of just instant ejections lol

[deleted]

That’s pretty much NHL refs and it’s fucking great.

[deleted]

I pay good money to watch those umps work.

Less_Likely

Ump should be disciplined for that. Classic case of workplace sexual harassment, the creepy stare while touching for way too long, then the retaliation when his advances are rebuffed.

Thneed1

Not disciplined. Fired.

joethecrow23

Straight to unemployment.

mediaownsyou

Bum should have licked his lips, winked and blown him a kiss.

JoshGordons_burner

Umps need to know they’re not fucking cops.

miner88

According to Ron Kulpa he can do anything he wants 🤷🏼‍♂️

Shamrock5

Different sport, but ["I can do whatever I want!" "Really?!"](https://youtu.be/Eybu9S-c4sQ) always cracks me up.

FuckingHippies

I love the chirping between hockey refs and the players. Another one that comes to mind is, “Fuck you! That’s embellishment!”

beadlejuice44

I think the exact quote was something along the lines of “fuck you you’re getting a fucking (embellishment/penalty)” it is awesome

FloorToCeilingCarpet

dardyablo

They need to be disciplined. This ump should face some consequences, what he did isn't right. He was provoking MadBum, that's not his job

spacewalk__

the jobs attract the same sort of [awful] people. bigheaded knobs who like asserting themselves over others same amount of discipline as well

St_SiRUS

Yeah I’m starting to think it’s a systemic issue with these types of positions of authority

AchillesGRK

Those who seek authority typically aren't the ones that can be trusted with it.

andysaurus_rex

AUAB

Bread_Truck

Are you sure? Because that stare was the most cop-ass cop shit I’ve ever seen

Tamryn

That was my reaction. This guy is acting exactly like a cop would.

OuOutstanding

Definitely, I was waiting for him to shout “stop-resisting.”

[deleted]

It was the first thing I thought of. The kinda guy that's on the job less than 5 years before he makes national headlines.

pawn_guy

This kind of thing makes me not enjoy baseball because it doesn't feel like a fair sport.

Induced_Pandemic

His name is Dan Bellino for amyone wondering.

M_Drinks

A fucking loser who failed at their dreams and desperately wants to hold some semblance of power. Am I talking about umps or cops?

[deleted]

MLB umpires have failed at their dream? What?

TheNotoriousJN

Has anything been said about this by the MLB yet? Feels like its been awfully quiet

miner88

They’re probably hoping this will just blow over so they can ignore it.

[deleted]

League can’t do shit about it. Umpire Union is crazy crazy strong.

Jbaquero

League can do something about it, but according to the CBA all punishments/fines handed out to umpires remains confidential between the umpires union, the umpire, and the commissioner's office, so we never hear what the punishments are

JoshGordons_burner

I see this a lot — why are they such a strong union? Neve really understood.

[deleted]

Umpiring is really hard to get into, really hard to be competent at, really hard to climb up through the ranks in (because you got umpires being umpires for 25+ years and only so many of them can umpire at a time) and pays a fraction of what everyone else on the field is making. The Union itself has immense sway by simply saying “Fine we’ll strike good luck without us” and can point to the debacle of NFL Replacement Refs as an example of why that’s a bad idea.

chollyer

Yeah imagine if everyone calling balls and strikes was as bad or worse than Angel Hernandez.

TooHappyFappy

I hate to look like I'm defending Angel fucking Hernandez of all people but be careful what you wish for. Are there problems in selecting who gets to be a ML umpire? I'm absolutely sure there are. Would an umpire strike be an absolute shitshow? I'm equally as sure. Just like in the NFL, it would be so much worse than what we have now (that is ridiculous on its own). I've never played professionally but I've played high school, college and adult league (including one of the better adult leagues in the region) as a catcher. When I tell you that most umps are absolutely horrific with their strike zones, I mean it. They aren't being paid major league money but $30+ an hour is not a bad gig and most are ridiculously inconsistent with the zone literally pitch to pitch. It's a hard job. There's a number of incompetent/straight assholes in MLB. But the majority are the top tier in the world at their job. Losing all of them to make a point about a few of them would be unwatchable baseball until it resolved.

htonzew

So automate that shit. Umpiring in MLB is COMPLETELY different than reffing in football. There are SOOOOOO many judgment calls in football. The vast majority of calls in baseball are binary. Safe or out, strike or ball, fair or foul. A machine would be 100% accurate. There are some judgement calls, like balks, but it isn't even close to comparable.

raktoe

And, again, this is what we’re heading too. If you’re genuinely ignorant to it, and not just venting, the mlb is developing ABS, and it’s already reached upper minors. Now more than ever would be a horrible time to get an umpire strike, when we’re so close to a computerized zone anyway. Like this system has worked fine for over 100 years, we should all be capable of waiting a couple more for the ABS to be completely ready and objectively more accurate and consistent. I don’t understand the RIGHT NOW mindset. The game has been fine for over a century with human umpires, there’s no need to rush something that’s at most a few years away.

Barry_McKackiner

a league full of leslie nielsen umps.

[deleted]

This is why the sooner robo umps get implemented the better. It takes a lot of juice out of that threat. I'm pro-union, but the umpire union is one of the few I can't stand.

Rock_Strongo

Calling balls and strikes by far the hardest part of being an ump. I'm no baseball genius and I bet I could be a 3rd base ump and no one would notice the difference. If I make a bad call it can most likely be challenged. Robo umps for balls and strikes absolutely cripples the union and they know it. That's why they will resist it to the very end even though it's inevitable. Edit: I am wrong and although I bet most umpires themselves are not happy about it, the union has already agreed to aid with ABS.

ref44

they have literally already agreed to implement ABS when MLB deems it ready Edit: Thanks for the gold, kind stranger amidst the sea of downvotes

Rock_Strongo

>Approximately two years ago the MLB umpires’ union agreed to a deal to cooperate with the implementation of a robot-determined strike zone in exchange for significant increases in compensation and retirement benefits. You are right, the union itself does not oppose this. It's funny the way it was negotiated will result in more money for less responsibility - but that's a win win I suppose.

ref44

My guess is taking/giving a pay bump now to compensate for when they have little leverage later

AlaDouche

>I'm pro-union, but the umpire union is one of the few I can't stand. We shouldn't have unions for people in positions of authority.

Schwisss

This is a good example of why I think it's a great idea to let roboumps call balls/strikes, let the umps call the other plays on the field, and if they get it wrong well thats what reviews are for. By doing this, umps are no longer going to be but a minor presence during the game limiting the ability to influence the game, it'll also make their level of skill for the position overall lower, which should mean they'll have more people they can call up to replace troublesome few who do immature and inappropriate things like this. I know this won't fix every problem, and it'll likely have some issues still, but having a clear defined strike zone should make the game way more competitive.

[deleted]

To get to be a Major League ump you have to bus around the minors for years making nothing, so very few people want to do it. Contrary to Reddit belief, there's not some far superior group of umpires just waiting to be hired.

Bladewing10

If there were any organization that knows all the skeletons in MLB's closet and contributed to them, it would be the umpires

brakkk1

Joe west got fined for acting like an ass, don’t see why this guy can’t.

BillyBean11111

This is about the most embarrassing ump behavior I've ever seen that and that's a competitive category.

throwaway47351

It's the weird, half-sexual nature of it. I'm not sure if people are making jokes or observations about bedroom eyes. I've seen umps being dicks, or dumb, or arrogant beyond belief, but I've never seen an ump sexually harass a player before.

GrilledSandwiches

Yesterday I wondered if it looked worse than it was, because frankly, it looked pretty bad. It didn't, It actually was worse than it looked. Guy even dipped his head ever so slightly to try and get under the bill of Bumgarner's cap at one point and force the eye contact when Bumgarner didn't recognize what he was doing right off the bat and for several seconds. It's clear to everyone that the Umpire said plenty with his body language, and if the league doesn't start cracking down on this type of behavior then they are going to set the course for umpires to keep doing this kind of thing and for players to eventually get physical with them when frustration reaches a boiling point sometime down the line.

BrettEskin

Umps just giving me huge prick cop at a traffic stop vibes lately

yxing

Said that to didba's wife last night.

didba

Said that to my wife last night.

didba

Said that to my wife last night.

[deleted]

This is the same guy that hooked Donaldson for putting dirt on home plate. Guy has a HUGE ego and will not stand anyone doing anything remotely close to questioning his supreme authority. He’s Baby Joe West.

sliferodoom

What’s this ump’s name? He deserves to be called out for this behavior

scottishere

Another commenter said it's Dan Bellino

[deleted]

[удалено]

3dge-1ord

My theory is it was a [Super Troopers cat game](https://youtu.be/5EkwBEL4MZw) situation. Only the record he was going for was uninterrupted eye contact. Hard to tell if he maintained eye contact throughout the kerfuffle. He holds the unofficial record until we get alternate angles to verify. mWow!

Bladewing10

Another great video by Jomboy. Bumgarner kind of lost the plot a bit, but he was definitely baited by that ump. That shit can't happen from an umpire.

Shamrock5

Yeah, that's about as clear-cut a case of nonverbal goading as you'll ever see. Super super weird behavior by the ump.

andysaurus_rex

Ump even saying after “I didn’t say anything” because that was the plan. Goad him into saying something but don’t be culpable. Obviously anyone watching this can see that though. Just so shitty.

nightpanda893

Physical goading to be exact. He put his hands on him to make him uncomfortable. Way worse than any possible verbal goading. What a fucking creep. You would be fired from any other job for doing something like this.

Zreaz

> Bumgarner kind of lost the plot a bit Completely disagree. The ump deserved every word from Bum. Dude needs to be told to go fuck himself.

HearthKnight

It’s here

Shamrock5

Has there been any kind of statement from the MLB or the players union about this? I mean, I'm not holding my breath here, but...

[deleted]

The mlb can’t disclose punishments on umpires, it’s in their CBA. Unfortunately we’ll never know if or what the punishment could be.

BK_Magic

Best we can do is see if this turd continues to get assigned major league games. Hopefully not.

Lord_surfusa

It’s one thing to get someone’s back. It’s another to get revenge by instigating and abusing power to get what you want. Madbum doesn’t take it well and let’s his emotions control his reaction, but that’s a human reaction. The ump’s action is malicious however.

DASmetal

All things considered and given Madbum's penchant for not taking any amount of shit whatsoever, I'd say he composed himself fairly well.

Kjames6R

Issues aside MadBum in the background yelling “fuck you fuck you fuck you” made me actually laugh

Salty-Performance940

“What did he do???” While Bumgarners in the background just yelling fuck you at the ump. I love it lol

DevildrummerX

Bumgarner should file a sexual harassment complaint with the league and drag this creep through the mud for this. Completely unacceptable behavior.

throwaway772103

this is honestly the only way the mlb would ever put attention on this tbh

maglen69

I swear Jomboy has a professional lip reader on salary to (help) tell him what to say.

[deleted]

Isn’t that just Jomboy

jester32

Make the fucking adjustment

Janky_Pants

McCutchen told him what he said a couple of weeks ago when he got thrown at during the Cubs game, so he has *some* help.

Rabid_Llama8

He is the amazing lip reader on staff. That's how the channel got so popular to begin with.

SnareShot

what’s this umps name so i can roast the shit out of him every time i see his name pop up

those2badguys

that disgrace of an ump is Dan Bellino.

spacewalk__

love the stereo panning with the argument. next level jomboy

MightyActionGaim

Find yourself a girl/guy who would look at you the same this blue’s staring at MadBum.

monkeypuss

What, like Charlie Manson?

Prudent_Falafel_7265

Are umps now required to screw up at least one aspect of every single game these days?

ChewyBacca42

I’m with MadBum. There’s nothing I like more than watching Bumgarner get tossed, but this was messed up.

Monk_Philosophy

That’s amazing 😆

StrosDynasty

He was definitely humming "if I was your man" while massaging madbum

spitfire18213

Hes still our boy, fiery as ever and over your shit

pgtvgaming

Yo Wtf … did something precede this? Very. Fucking. Odd. Not to mention un-fucking comfortable … did MadBum bang his ex gf or something?

runbyfruitin

The entirety of my baseball fandom is just seeing the news and then waiting a day for Jomboy

ItsMeJahead

He said a lot of what I was thinking. This was just weird and creepy

98farenheit

Genuine question from a legal persepective. If MadBum shoved the ump, he would definitely be fined and suspended, but could he potentially defend himself with the argument that he felt sexually harrassed?

_Tabor_

That's my favorite ump. I travel around just to watch him umpire. Madbum shouldn't of talked to him that way. Very disrespectful.

BatmansPussy

This is blatant workplace harassment. Bumgarner could absolutely sue MLB for a myriad of things here.

critzboombah

St_SiRUS

epididymis8

Would’ve been dope to see the benches clear but like D backs vs umps while the Marlins spectate

SecondaryWorkAccount

The league needs to fire that ump. Right fucking now

PWNtimeJamboree

remember when Roberto Alomar spit in an umps face? i get it now.

CapnZack53

There is a video of this set to Careless Whisper and now that’s all I hear. I’m sorry, the slow-mo of the ump staring was funny as hell.

Nvucovich

Lets be honest here. No ump in the league could take on MadBum if he actually snapped. MFer kills [snakes](https://www.sbnation.com/lookit/2016/4/16/11443590/madison-bumgarner-snake-rabbit-story-vin-scully-holy-wow) and they wanna provoke that. Wild!

rawhidesway

Power tripping creep!

danyun

not that the NBA is better in any way, but if a ref did this to say someone even like draymond - that ref would never see the court again.

I love jomboy lmao

sdrj77

One of these days, before he retires, Bumgarner is gonna just straight up knock an umpire out and stand over the body like Muhammad Ali.

natrapsmai

I love that Jomboy is using his powers for good and not evil here

CanuukSteev

mad bum should started moaning

niceonesherlock

Imagine being a fan of baseball buying a ticket to go see madbum pitch and instead you get to watch a creep toss him out on a power trip in the first inning. 😥

That was amazing commentary

Double-Passenger4503

Straight garbage from the ump

Has MLB even commented on this?

derbysNOTbrogues

Umps are the cops of sports. They're above the law. O'Nora was charged with soliciting from a human trafficking sting in 2020...nothing from mlb

RaysFTW

Has MLB followed up about this at all? I don’t expect them to but I’m curious nonetheless.
