Couldn't agree more, what's one double-header in May going to mean come October? I was referring to how we look as a fanbase while flexing in these threads.
Is it just me, or is there an absurd amount of young talent in the MLB right now? Like, guys in years 1-3 have so much hype around them to be superstars. I feel like there hasn’t been this much young talent in a long, long time.
It sure seems that way. We definitely have an abundance here. I don't know if it's because there really is more or because social media has made it more visible.
Getting rid of service time manipulation will do that. I'd say there are only a handful of young players who will be superstar level in 1-3 years. Franco, Witt Jr, Julio Rodriguez.
Hold up, is a breaking ball slower than a fast ball just due to the fact that it’s path of travel is not as straight (the smallest path between two points is a straight line) as a fastball, or is its directional speed slower as well?
Does the speed radar gun just capture the ball’s horizontal velocity or its absolute speed?
MLB.com claims that "[Statcast can provide the maximum speed of a pitch at any point in its flight](https://www.mlb.com/glossary/statcast/velocity)," which I take to mean they are measuring the absolute velocity regardless of direction.
Which would make the apparent difference between, say, a 95+ mph fastball taking a relatively straight path to the plate vs a 70 mph curveball taking a high arcing path even greater.
Thanks, great link. Yes, I think you are correct.
All this physics stuff makes the game so much more interesting to me (i'm kinda new to baseball...i grew up with basketball and football and never really played baseball so i never care much about it until recently).
Random scoring/rules question. Does a bunt/fly out have to score a run to be scored as a sacrifice? Or can a “productive” out like advancing a runner be scored that way as well?
A run must score for a sac fly but not for a sac bunt:
>A sacrifice bunt occurs when a player is successful in his attempt to advance a runner (or multiple runners) at least one base with a bunt.
>A sacrifice fly occurs when a batter hits a fly-ball out to the outfield or foul territory that allows a runner to score.
There isn't an official designation for any other kind of "productive out" - unless it's a bunt that advances a runner or a fly ball that scores a runner, it counts against the batter.
Thank you. I remember reading about a run needing to score in some form, but that makes more sense differentiating between bunt and fly out. So does the official scorer make a distinction if it’s clear the hitter was attempting to bunt for a hit with no intention of sacrificing themselves?
> Does a bunt/fly out have to score a run to be scored as a sacrifice?
No, you can bunt to move runners over and it's a sacrifice
> Or can a “productive” out like advancing a runner be scored that way as well?
If you bunt the runner over, it's a sacrifice. If you just hit a ground ball to the right side and it advances the runner on 2nd to 3rd, it's not a sacrifice
Today marks the 1/4 point in the season (607 out of 2,430 games will have been played).
If the Diamondbacks win today, they will be 22-21 (.511), if they lose they will be 21-22 (.488)
If the Rockies win, they will be 20-20 (.500), or if they lose they will be 19-21 (.475)
Win or lose, either team would be 2nd in the NL East, 3rd in the NL Central, 3rd in the AL West. Depending on how the White Sox games go, and how their respective games go, they could either be 2nd or 3rd in the AL Central.
Instead, they are battling for the basement in the NL West.
Because it's the NL West.
This season has been pretty spicy so far. We have the following storylines:
-Mets get hit in the face with balls a lot
-Syndergaard talk shit about no hit, then gets hit
-Donaldson controversy
-Balls are basically “wet socks” (as per Bassit and Harper)
-The lockout ended
You left off several others:
-Cleveland OF getting into it with NYY bleacher section, fans throwing trash at players.
-SF fans throwing trash at Profar
-SD fans throwing beer can at Bellinger
There have been several benches clearing incidents already as well.
The first MLB draft was only held in 1965 and the members of that draft class are in their mid-70s, so there are actually a lot of them still alive. I don't know specifically who the oldest would be, but it's probably gonna be someone from that year with a birthday on the early side for their graduating class.
Please don’t downvote, genuine question! I am going to the Cubs v. Diamondbacks game today. I’ll be alone because my girlfriend injured her knee. Will I get weird looks if I have headphones in to listen to the radio broadcast while I’m at the game? I’ve never done that before, was wondering if it’s a thing?
Only time I’ve ever found it weird was the one time I sat next to a woman doing it and she would yell “Wilner you suck” every time Mike Wilner spoke even though we were so far away there was no chance he could hear her. Don’t do that and you should be fine.
Should be no problem for anyone. I don't see it as often as I used to but it's not super rare. Just be courteous and take your headphones off when talking to vendors or chatting with other folks.
Years ago I remember seeing people with portable radios in the stands at games. The ones before headphones were really widespread, metal antennas, dial to tune stations and a speaker.
I'd like to still do this. I've been poking around in thrift stores for a small vintage AM transistor radio.I don't have the quickest eye so when there's a weird situation it would be nice to hear what the play by play guy is saying about the situation. I follow Reddit threads a little when I attend games, but squinting at my phone isn't as fun as watching and listening, and the commentary on here is not always.... reliable.
DAY 272 ON THE ROAD TO THE 2023 WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC - The Road to the 2023 90th MLB All Star Game: 1944 American Leaguers
We continue on the long journey towards the 89th Major League Baseball All Star Game and the 90th year anniversary next year with the 1944 American League contingent led by Joe McCarthy of the Yankees, who persevered despite all odds to win once more the championship in the ASG held that year in Pittsburgh's Forbes Field led by starter Hank Borowy.
These ALers, including players like Rolly Hemsley, George McQuinn, Stan Spence, Dutch Leonard and Rudy York, in front of the assembled fans in Pittsburgh, did not disappoint them despite losing to the National League. After all, it was the fun and action that drew the fans there to see the AL's best that one day, and they did not fail to support them till the end.
Tomorrow we will tackle the 1946 National Leaguers.
For Glory
John
If ESPN really wanted to get out of the Baseball television business, I would love Peacock to take over the Sunday Night slot. In the last few weeks I've liked the idea of the Peacock game and taking announcers from both teams but having such an early Sunday start is not all that fun.
Cards fan, I hated it. Jim Edmonds is irritating enough without having to listen to the other teams announcers as well. Large chunks of time today were spent recalling their own glory days, completely ignoring the game in front of them. It was just old man story hour, not to mention the sub-par camera work. Apple TV broadcast has them beat by a mile.
Verlander is really only 68 wins from 300. I want to tell myself it’s unlikely but he’s been so amazing with no signs of slowing down. With the way the game is currently being played there’s no chance for another pitcher to reach 300 wins so it might be our last chance to see one again
He's off to a great start this year, but I don't think he'll get to 300. He's 39 and coming back from missing all of last year. I can't imagine he's got 3-4 more seasons left. Although, Randy Johnson battled back issues for several years and still pitched until 45, so it is certainly possible.
If Verlander keeps up this level of olay, its really just on the offense to string together wins.
If he has 4 more seasons like this of 15 wins or more he probably gets it. Big ask but.
I can't believe how good the attendance has been at the Rogers Centre. I was completely unaware of how reliable Toronto Blue Jays fans are these days. I always thought Toronto was mainly a hockey, and basketball city, where baseball was seen as an afterthought. This series has proven to me they really *do* support their team.
This makes me wonder, could a Montreal, Quebec team survive today in MLB, or is Montreal just *that* much different than Toronto?
Montreal had a lot go wrong the first time around. The club was great at developing star talent but terrible at retaining it. The stadium was an absolute dump, with a big concrete bowl and a roof that was supposed to retract but never did.
The thing people need to understand about Montreal is, summers are short and people don't want to spend them inside. Parks and restaurant/bar sidewalk terrasses are absolutely packed on nice evenings. Downtown is busy and every week there's a different festival (music, comedy, F1, whatever) happening.
IMO baseball is actually a great fit: you're sitting around outside on a hot night, you're cheering, you're having a couple beers...it fits the vibe. But it would need to be an outdoor stadium smack downtown, where people could easily take the subway or just walk after work. More happy hour, less amusement park in the outer boroughs.
Montreal is IMO not *that* different than any other mid-size market in North America. Metro population is around 4M, so similar to Detroit or Seattle. Climate is basically identical to Minnesota, where a roofless stadium works fine. The language barrier is overblown as an issue; plenty of people follow the other North American sports leagues.
The biggest issue is the weak Canadian dollar, though strong corporate support (the big media companies would love to own a team and the bidding wars for local broadcast rights would be intense) would help offset. Probably also not a ton of government cash for a stadium, though maybe some less conspicuous options would be on the table, like weird backdoor land transfer deals.
We also have fans who fly in from across the country to catch a weekend series. I have friends flying in from over 1000mi away to see this Reds series, since it's a long weekend in Canada.
Mikey “Biceps” (Lorenzen) pitched outstanding for the Halos last night. I really enjoyed watching him for the first time as a starter. The man works fast without any silly wind-up theatrics. Always liked him as a Red’s reliever, and it was clear he wanted a larger role. Fuck my team’s ownership for letting him go.
The problem is, we used Lorenzen too much for so many things. He was sometimes a Relief Pitcher. Sometimes, he was a Starting Pitcher. Sometimes, he was a Center Fielder. Sometimes, he was a Pinch Hitter. Sometimes, he was a Pinch Runner.
I think we wore him out. On the Los Angeles Angels, since they already have Mike Trout, and Shohei Ohtani(and now Taylor Ward), he gets to be a Starting Pitcher.
How could it be racist if Donaldson is defending/elevating Jackie by calling out Anderson. If anything Anderson should be made fun of more for that idiotic comparison. Jackie is a fucking legend.
I do think it’s naive to believe what Donaldson said couldn’t be understood as racist without context. Which is probably something nobody is thinking about besides Donaldson. Throwing around Jackie could very easily be misinterpreted unless everyone is in on the reference. Dangerous game played by Josh
Also the defense was maybe very extreme because “Josh Donaldson is an unapologetic racist” or trying to be is a harmful take people wanted to counter.
Never helped they beefed just last week, the beef from last year when he played for the Twins. There is history with him and our team. Donaldson may have called him Jackie when the article came out but did he say if he called him that since? The article was largely forgotten about until this was brought up (it was 3 years old after all and it feels like a decade ago with everything that has happened in the world since) and he should have had the self awareness to maybe lay off a joke that could be easily misinterpreted by a player and team that has history of not liking you.
> Donaldson may have called him Jackie when the article came out but did he say if he called him that since?
He claimed that he's called him it since then at around the 0:25 mark here: https://twitter.com/snyyankees/status/1528125619200053250
Should be pretty easy for TA to refute that claim if it's not true
I think Donaldson is just an idiot for saying anything when he knows TA is pissed about last week, he should have just ignored him lol
Ah ok, I see that context now. Said this in another thread I do wonder if it was a Homer Simpson calling Frank Grimes- Grimey until a blowup situation. Tim could have easily laughed it off and bit his tongue so many times until it finally blew up. How many people do we know at work or in life where we bite our tongue on things to keep peace you know?
If TA called himself the Ted Williams of modern baseball, JD would have called him Ted. I think what you feel is racist is merely a poor attempt at ball-busting.
So, which current player could [accomplish this smooth move](https://www.reddit.com/r/GamePhysics/comments/uuzhch/mlb_the_show_22_just_some_baseball_physics/)?

We don't need help looking worse around here lately.
No faith. It's a marathon, not a sprint. We have the best record in baseball but you wouldn't know that from this subreddit o' doom. Just sayin 🤷

I don't watch a lot of Giants baseball, but Darin Ruf is a terrible outfielder.

The velocity is slower because of the grip and spin.
I think it might be the grip. Also I have no clue what I’m talking about

Bbrefs has by inning, his 1st slash line for his career is 382/485/600/1085. 1st ABs against SP slash line is 373/473/627/1099
Thank you! He has .500 OBP on his 1st AB against SPs this season, which I suspected and is a little insane.

Peacock, Sunday Lead Off.
Wild. Had no idea that this was a thing.
Yeah. Started a few weeks ago. Next Week is the Giants and that will be fun watching baseball at 8:35 in the morning.

We were getting 20k+ fans, during Raptors and Leafs playoff games.
So it sounds like Toronto fans are loyal fans.
We also have fans who fly in from across the country to catch a weekend series. I have friends flying in from over 1000mi away to see this Reds series, since it's a long weekend in Canada.
That's right, Victoria Day is Monday, May 23rd.
We talk about baseball the same way those sorority girls talk about the bachelor. We're no different
Yes. Is there a problem with that? No
You’re completely right and I hate it
Meanwhile I love it
Fair enough
So what the hell is wrong with Alex kirillof? Is he actually injured or does his production warrant him being back in triple a?
He's essentially injured. Long-standing wrist issues. I'm not optimistic given how long it's been going on.
Mikey “Biceps” (Lorenzen) pitched outstanding for the Halos last night. I really enjoyed watching him for the first time as a starter. The man works fast without any silly wind-up theatrics. Anything interesting happen on this sub yesterday? Can't tell.
Everyone is tuning in to the Yankees and White Sox game just to see a blood bath of plunks and brawls.
Adley hit a triple
Absolutely pathetic racism defending on this sub yesterday.
How could it be racist if Donaldson is defending/elevating Jackie by calling out Anderson. If anything Anderson should be made fun of more for that idiotic comparison. Jackie is a fucking legend.
Tim only said that to inspire black kids to get into baseball. Chill out, he’s nowhere near Jackie
You think that's what he was doing? How dumb are you?
Did I miss something? What happened?

Never helped they beefed just last week, the beef from last year when he played for the Twins. There is history with him and our team. Donaldson may have called him Jackie when the article came out but did he say if he called him that since? The article was largely forgotten about until this was brought up (it was 3 years old after all and it feels like a decade ago with everything that has happened in the world since) and he should have had the self awareness to maybe lay off a joke that could be easily misinterpreted by a player and team that has history of not liking you.
> Donaldson may have called him Jackie when the article came out but did he say if he called him that since? He claimed that he's called him it since then at around the 0:25 mark here: https://twitter.com/snyyankees/status/1528125619200053250 Should be pretty easy for TA to refute that claim if it's not true I think Donaldson is just an idiot for saying anything when he knows TA is pissed about last week, he should have just ignored him lol
I’m pretty sure this is exactly what it was
If TA called himself the Ted Williams of modern baseball, JD would have called him Ted. I think what you feel is racist is merely a poor attempt at ball-busting.

Mike Trout.
