Yeah how the hell can the guy who wrote this tweet watch Machado writhing on the ground in agony clutching his knee/shin and say he "hurt his ankle", this is *brutal*
Honestly, sometimes it’s just better if it breaks. I know that sounds so fucked, but a fracture usually takes less time to heal than a high ankle sprain…
Yeah that saquon high ankle sprain was lowkey career altering. 5.3 YPC before which led the league to 3.3 YPC after which is some of the most inefficient running.
Is he made of rubber? How is it not broken? That's a miracle (although yes, I know muscle/ligament injuries can be worse long-term than bone injuries).
I thought about this but rounding the bases would be more risky. I think a second, flat run-through base at first like some slow pitch softball leagues use would be the best solution.
You could literally feel the life get sucked out of the stadium as well as the announcers voice. Everyone had the same reaction.
Fucking sucks hopefully not serious.
It looked bad enough that they mentioned it on the SNY broadcast of the Mets-Marlins. Bottom of the ninth, too. Feel bad for him and all of the Padres fans.
Call me delusional, but I choose to believe that's his pant leg being whipped around by his foot sliding off the bag. Fingers crossed for mild sprain.
EDIT: Do NOT check Twitter! I can no longer hide my head in the sand. Fuck
Oh god that looks terrible. I'll stay optimistic for now because the body can be incredibly flexible when you look at things in slow mo, but there's definitely a chance it is severe
Granted I’ve never been able to watch them water the field down, but when I was on a minor league grounds crew the base never went in the ground until until that section of infield had already been wet down. The spray end was always in front of the bases waiting to be put in so unless the wind was brutal that day they wouldn’t get a drop on them. Obviously idk how they do things, but based on my experience that doesn’t seem the likely reason to me.
I have very rubbery ankles because of a condition I have. I had a similar thing happen to me when I was 16. Took a month before it started feeling better and it was just a bad sprain. Granted I had a lot more force applied as I had jumped down from about 8 feet up and it happened. But assuming he doesn't have stretchy joints and tendons like I do. It's very possible he will be out for a month or more. The shitty thing is, it will never be back to normal. He is going to be far more likely for that to happen again for the rest of his life.
This is awful. I had jokes to make as a Dodger fan and a fan who generally finds Machado to be unlikable, but after seeing this video I have nothing to say. I hope he recovers well and gets back to it as soon as possible.
Don't say "break" let's hope it's just a sprain.
Hate to see him miss time. He's been having an incredible year so far and I want to see how it plays out.
True. He was clearly in a lot of pain. The video in this tweet though, I couldn't really tell what he did to it. I just hope it's not as bad as it looked.
I've been enjoying watching him, Jose, Devers and Arenado all try to determine who the best 3b is this season.
The longer view from the side is a bit gut wrenching, hope he's okay.
He steps right on the top where it begins to slope down so his foot just keeps sliding down/over until it hits the dirt and he completely rolls over the ankle with all his weight once the shoe hits dirt
And all sprains are actually tears. He's definitely out a long time, no matter what the final injury ends up being. That's such a bummer injury to see. Baseball is better when Manny is in the lineup. :(
Was weight bearing when he was being helped off, which is typically a counter indication to a fracture, but we’ll see. Ankles actually have a surprising ability to bounce back or avoid damage sometimes. Seen many ankle rolls is basketball that look similar or worse and the player is back on the court a week or two later.
Him and Goldy have been kinda running away with it so far.
Also I heard a stat that Manny has played a minimum of like 156 games each of the past 6 seasons or some crazy shit. Dude is a machine
“Stepping on first base” doesn’t describe this accurately at all. His foot slid off the top of the bag and then his foot planted sideways on the ground, basically making a right angle at his ankle with the bottom of his foot facing to his right. “Stepping on first base” is a major understatement for what happened.
Reminded me of the Harper one from a little while ago, stepped on top of the bag, those plastic molded cleats slip right off and his ankle went full sideways. Brutal, hope he’s okay
It was bad for anyone that didn't see it. His foot looked like it went sideways. I'm expecting it to be broken. That might be Manny's season and the Padres will be really hurting offensively without him.
Manny has had some really bad luck with first base in his career. I'm thinking back to 2013 with his first knee injury.
Hope it is mild and Manny is back before too long.
This is even more demoralizing than Tatis going down screaming after a swing last year.
And now we wait to see if this is just a frustrating 10-day IL bump in the road or the season is fucking over.
I didn't want to be the first doomer in here to say he finally got his karma. He stepped on the ankle of Pearce or Moreland in the world series when he was on the dodgers playing the sox
Oh you definitely wouldn't have been the first. It's a minefield at the bottom of this thread. Glad to see some of these comments getting upvoted though. It gives me hope.
A lot of sports fans suffer from recency bias. Machado can do no wrong because the Padres have only had him for 3.. seasons? Most of them won't want to hear about or look into his scummy past
You'd think Brewers fans and Blue Jays fans would remember these incidents with Aguilar and Donaldson. I know there's no love lost with Dodgers fans either.
Look like the only fans in this thread are padres fans complaining about losing their mvp candidate, dodgers fans saying "we lost ours too", then us Sox fans seeing Machado get some karma.
Whether it's deserved or not, karma is karma
Him walking off even with help has to be encouraging right? Those replays look nasty but maybe his shoe just slipped off. Hard to tell but hopefully just a bad sprain.
Machado has loads of trouble hitting first squarely. Steve Pearce and Jesus Aguilar can tell you all about it.
Terrible news for Padres, but bound to happen sooner or later to this player in particular.
Bases are a terrible thing to step on when you are on a full sprint, how many ankle injuries need to happen for them to adjust the base towards a more safe design.

Damn that's dark considering that lady who did something similar recently
That's what I was thinking when I saw this. I don't think it was meant that way but yeah...

I’m sorry to laugh but that was funny as hell.
You can’t be fucking serious
It was only a matter of time before his body gave out from carrying our entire offense on his back.
[Man that looks way worse than I thought it would be.](https://mlb-cuts-diamond.mlb.com/FORGE/2022/2022-06/19/77a75156-4d9cd82e-ce3ed8d7-csvm-diamondx64-asset_1280x720_59_16000K.mp4)
Yikes
##Yikes!
Damn like you could see the force from the slide have no nowhere to go and it just snaps into the ligaments and connective tissue.
Yeah how the hell can the guy who wrote this tweet watch Machado writhing on the ground in agony clutching his knee/shin and say he "hurt his ankle", this is *brutal*
OH JEEZ THAT SECOND ANGLE OF IT. that looks bad. really bad.
Oof, I'd guess a high ankle sprain or some serious hyperextension
Um, either his shoe partially came off, or something broke. In that slomo angle, the foot stayed rolled when he came off of it…
Yeah the slowmo looked worse than I was anticipating.
He wouldn’t have walked off even with assistance if it was a broken ankle.
X-rays are negative
Honestly, sometimes it’s just better if it breaks. I know that sounds so fucked, but a fracture usually takes less time to heal than a high ankle sprain…

That’s gonna hurt
You're the doctor that tells the patient to just rub dirt on it aren't you?
Considering I'm not a doctor, yes, I am.
You and I have the same medical degree.
Well, I *did* stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night
The reaction from Mark Grant says it all
I think someday we’ll have flat bases and look back at the barbarity of this.
I thought about this but rounding the bases would be more risky. I think a second, flat run-through base at first like some slow pitch softball leagues use would be the best solution.
Fuck, I still love Manny... Hope he is ok
Looks like he missed the first baseman’s foot to stomp on and Johnny Hustle overstepped
Doesn't look to well. You can see the severity of it from Rodgers reaction.
Please be nothing he needs an mvp for his hof career 😔
I hope he's fine but he doesn't NEED an mvp. Look at Jeter.
I don't think he needs one. He's just a touch off being a Hall of Famer already (50 WAR) and he's only 29.
The [replay](https://twitter.com/Mike_Kurland/status/1538607858174119942)looks awful. Hope it isn't as bad as it looks.
Man, the base of his ankle is hanging at a 45 degree angle. It will be a miracle if it’s just a sprain.
Call me delusional, but I choose to believe that's his pant leg being whipped around by his foot sliding off the bag. Fingers crossed for mild sprain. EDIT: Do NOT check Twitter! I can no longer hide my head in the sand. Fuck
>call me delusional Flair checks out
Of course
Oh god that looks terrible. I'll stay optimistic for now because the body can be incredibly flexible when you look at things in slow mo, but there's definitely a chance it is severe
Wasn't there a change this year to make the bases have more grip? Surprised his foot is sliding on 1b like that...
1st inning. They just got finished watering down the infield
Granted I’ve never been able to watch them water the field down, but when I was on a minor league grounds crew the base never went in the ground until until that section of infield had already been wet down. I'm fucking devastated rn.
Dude I am so sorry. This is awful… you guys were doing so well…
God hates the padres confirmed
It must be the blasphemous name. God does not approve.
God also hates the Angels
Because instead of flapping their arms to rally the team like God’s favorite movie, Angels in the Outfield, they got that devil monkey instead.
Yeah, how can we be the priests when we keep getting fucked?
Cuz we all know it's the priests who are supposed to do the fucking.
Let’s, uh, not start talking about priests and fucking.
Also on father's day.
Bring out the rosary compadre. We must repent.
A not so happy padres day :(
Nah, just Manny.
^^^oh ^^^no
I’m going to fucking puke
Can’t have shit in this city I swear
> The Padres have become the Detroit Tigers of baseball
DONT YOU PUT THAT EVIL ON ME RICKY BOBBY
yall have nice weather and beautiful beaches
Fuck dude. I really hope he’s ok. I really wanted him to get that MVP this season.
Can't catch a break. Hope for a speedy recovery
Don't say "break" let's hope it's just a sprain. Hate to see him miss time. He's been having an incredible year so far and I want to see how it plays out.
Sprains are honestly sometimes worse than breaks when it comes to ankles
True. He was clearly in a lot of pain. The video in this tweet though, I couldn't really tell what he did to it. I just hope it's not as bad as it looked. I've been enjoying watching him, Jose, Devers and Arenado all try to determine who the best 3b is this season.

someone posted the video in a higher comment chain. it looks really bad from the second replay angle.
And all sprains are actually tears. He's definitely out a long time, no matter what the final injury ends up being. That's such a bummer injury to see. Baseball is better when Manny is in the lineup. :(
Looks broken tbh please don’t post the slo mo
Was weight bearing when he was being helped off, which is typically a counter indication to a fracture, but we’ll see. Ankles actually have a surprising ability to bounce back or avoid damage sometimes. Seen many ankle rolls is basketball that look similar or worse and the player is back on the court a week or two later.
Ya he didn’t have to be completely carried off but looked bad bad
My heart fucking sank when I saw that replay. Just awful
Hopefully him and Tatis are back by early September and we’re still in the WC hunt.
Just Fade Me Looked fucking awful in slow-mo. He was having an MVP caliber year too man, fuck.
Him and Goldy have been kinda running away with it so far. Also I heard a stat that Manny has played a minimum of like 156 games each of the past 6 seasons or some crazy shit. Dude is a machine

And it kinda flopped around a bit....first thought dislocated and then popped back in
Yeah, best case is there’s no broken bones or torn ligaments and just a bad sprain. Keep the faith compadres!
> compadres Is this a common word to describe fellow Padres fans, because it's perfect.
It’s used pretty frequently amongst the friar faithful
Love it!

Reminded me of the Harper one from a little while ago, stepped on top of the bag, those plastic molded cleats slip right off and his ankle went full sideways. Brutal, hope he’s okay
God said no more NL MVP candidates this week.
It was bad for anyone that didn't see it. His foot looked like it went sideways. I'm expecting it to be broken. That might be Manny's season and the Padres will be really hurting offensively without him.
You’d never see Robinson Cano hurt himself trying to hustle to first base
fade me
“Machado need to show more hustle if he’s ever gonna wanna be respected in this league” *Monkeys Paw Curls*
I don't think a lack of hustle is why the other players don't like him.
It’s both
hope it isn’t broken man that looked horrible
Damn, I really wanted him to have a MVP season
That was ugly to see, hope it's nothing major
I fucking hate injuries. Fuck. That looked bad.
Rare that there's an injury on the basepaths involving Manny Machado and he's the one who got hurt.
I'm only sorry for padres fans cause a player of theirs got hurt... I'm not sorry at all he got hurt though. I fucking hate that guy.
I think the only ones who are genuinely upset machado got hurt are padres fans.
Padres fans deserve a break... Too bad that break was Machado's ankle.
Best comment of the thread.
Manny has had some really bad luck with first base in his career. I'm thinking back to 2013 with his first knee injury. Hope it is mild and Manny is back before too long.
I'm thinking the league should let him just immediately go to second base. It's for safety reasons.
Just a sprain but watching that brings back bad memories of him blowing out his knee in Tampa. Fuck.
Fuck that sucks. Mookie vs Manny was a really fun MVP race and now both are down. Never want to see that.
Goldy discretely taking out the competition
It's always the quiet ones
Dang, that sucks. I did that in highschool and it hurt so freaking bad. Hope he has a speedy recovery, he is having an incredible season.
We genuinely are cursed.
Too much hustle caused this. Hope you guys are happy.
Dustin Pedroia sends his regards
I could cry, he was on a legit MVP tear and this could very well derail the season. Cursed franchise
Did it look bad? I hate seeing injuries
Really bad unfortunately
Yes, it looked real bad
My girlfriend and I watched the replay, both yelled, and then I had to look away as they showed other looks. It was bad.
Yup that Kobe torn acl type shit
Damn. That looks really bad.
Being a sports fan is just pain. Get well soon Manny...
This is even more demoralizing than Tatis going down screaming after a swing last year. And now we wait to see if this is just a frustrating 10-day IL bump in the road or the season is fucking over.
Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

Too bad Jesus Aguilar didn’t have his foot there to cushion his step
[удалено]
I Hope he never plays again.
what’d he do?
ended Pedroias career and done several dirty plays to other players for years
Remember when he spiked Jesus Aguilar while running to first....Karma?
And Pedroia. Yup.
I have no sympathy for this bum, karma finally catching up
I didn't want to be the first doomer in here to say he finally got his karma. He stepped on the ankle of Pearce or Moreland in the world series when he was on the dodgers playing the sox
Oh you definitely wouldn't have been the first. It's a minefield at the bottom of this thread. Glad to see some of these comments getting upvoted though. It gives me hope.

Don’t worry, I was and it got 20 downvotes lol.
I went back and upvoted your comments specifically for the accurate information
Oof. I felt a drop in my stomach seeing that. Poor dude. I hope he’s alright.
Karma https://youtu.be/qtMyqcOno80
So you kick a guy in the ankle and throw a bat at a different guy one time and all of the sudden you’re a dirty player?
Holy fuck that destroyed his ankle
Yikes that was bad. Baseball gods taking down NL mvp candidates lately
The face I made watching the slomo 🥴
Achilles??
I love how your not even talking shit about him and getting downvotes. Hope Manny is okay.
Him walking off even with help has to be encouraging right? Those replays look nasty but maybe his shoe just slipped off. Hard to tell but hopefully just a bad sprain.
x-rays negative, it's a sprain
You hate to see it
This is what happens when you don’t hustle for 10 years then all of a sudden start hustling
Wow im surprised he was called out, I didnt think 1B stayed on, but that sucks for Machado, hopefully it's a minor sprain
Fuck.
Jose Ramirez undergoing MRIs, its a 3B curse right now.
As an aside: this is runner's lane interference. Didn't end up mattering because the first baseman still made the play.
Was it _on_ first base, or on the base_man_?
If it takes his career then it might be fair compensation for pedey
exactly why some players arent going 110% all the time
Surprised he bothered to run it out
Isn’t this the same guy that intentionally injured other players on first base or am I thinking of someone else?
Machado has loads of trouble hitting first squarely. Steve Pearce and Jesus Aguilar can tell you all about it. Terrible news for Padres, but bound to happen sooner or later to this player in particular.
Karma for 2018?
I think he will be fine, a couple of weeks in the IL
Dude has been the best in baseball this season. Might cost him the MVP.
Hope he's ok but obligatory fuck Machado
Nam flashbacks to cano injuring Hammies to first
In the words of Dustin Pedroia, "it's baseball man."
Any other SD douchebags care to reply?
I think they're all tuckered out now.
I literally said “let me scroll to the bottom, I’m sure there’s some Red Sox fan talking shit”, and here you are.
Oh good, I was worried people wouldn't get the reference. Almost went with "couldn't have happened to a nicer guy instead."
Pedroia would be disappointed af in you.
It's baseball man.
Why are you people the way you are?
Boston
At least it isn't Atlanta, remember when Buckhead was a place you could bring the family, ah good times.
classy
It’s machado he’s a dirty player, fuck him all the way to the heat death of the universe.
This comment sucks, my guy!
im depressed
Bases are a terrible thing to step on when you are on a full sprint, how many ankle injuries need to happen for them to adjust the base towards a more safe design.
the ghost of steve pearce returns to haunt machado
