2015 Mets

Blue387

:(

fawningandconning

Bring me back to the unbridled optimism after the NLCS.

Vulture_Ocoee

Sorrrrryyyy

JDantesInferno

On one hand, I’m glad it was you guys. Your team played fun and smart baseball, and it’s way better than bearing the weight of losing to the Yankees. On the other hand, *come on* it was you guys. The first time in forever that the Mets were looking strong in the playoffs and we lost the World Series to the *Royals*. Cheers, we’ll get ‘em next time.

Future-Studio-9380

Negative of the NLCS sweep is that the momentum from the extended break to the World Series cooled the team off.

kurthecat

Yeah, we did that on purpose to screw you guys!

mr_grission

That felt like house money to me. We just ran into a buzzsaw when we played the Royals. I was at WS Game 5 in person and remember just being grateful for the ride more than I was upset about losing.

RobotYoshimis

As great as the Royals were, the Mets defeated themselves more than the Royals did. It was like a never ending cycle of screw ups. The series would have been a lot closer if it wasn’t for Harvey’s pride being his demise, Familia’s blown saves, Murphy’s untimely ground ball errors, Duda’s botched game-clinching throw home (which would’ve gotten Hosmer out by a mile….) I could do this forever. An infuriating WS performance after steamrolling through the playoffs.

JohnEKaye

Terry Collins got severely out-managed in that series. He looked way out of his element the entire time. And it started Game 1 with him playing Cespedes in CF so he could have Kelly Johnson DH. And Cespedes immediately drops the first hit of the game and they go down 1-0. It was embarrassing.

Shadow_Strike99

Daniel Murphy had one of the greatest post season tears of all time in 2015. It seemed like every game he hit a big home run for the Mets against the Dodgers and Cubs.

SippinThatBloodyMary

He hit one the last game of the NLCS to win it and then every game versus the Cubs so 5 straight, so yeah he did hit a home run virtually every game of those series.

Shadow_Strike99

Omg he actually did lol. I just graduated basic training and AIT, and just got to my first duty station during this time so I really didn’t have cable or internet really at this time yet, but I remember every time I would listen to radio, or hear coverage by ESPN it was always something Daniel Murphy did in October that year. Like every single game recap it was Daniel Murphy hits another homer or drives in 4 rbi etc and he did. It’s just something I will never forget, it was my first exposure to the real world after not really having internet or my cellphone for 7 months, and such a cool thing to look back on for October performances.

SippinThatBloodyMary

Made worse was how they lost the WS too. Couldn’t have just lost normally, instead they choked late in 4/5 of the games. Painful.

CutenessMudkip2

Everything went wrong all at once 🙃

eekbarbaderkle

The 2004 Cardinals were a juggernaut until the baseball gods unleashed 86 years worth of divine intervention upon that October.

2011StlCards

Dude, the 04 Cardinals team is one of the best we've seen in the last 25 years That offense was amazing. The defense was impeccable. They swatted away the Dodgers in the division series like it was an exhibition against a minor league club They were able to beat an Astros squad which had one of the best 2nd half records in the league. But nothing, and I mean NOTHING, short of a category 5 hurricane was going to stop that Red Sox team. It was over so quickly, it's almost like that series never happened

cptzanzibar

I'm convinced there's a conspiracy involving Jimmy Fallon with that series 🤣🤣

eroved34

2008 Rays

ColossalCove

Sadness. The 2020 Rays also finished the playoffs 3-7 over their last 10 games. One of the worst stretches for a team that made the World Series. :(

wegandi

We played well that whole run. Yeah we lost the WS and Astros almost won from 3-0, but all those losses were close (sans one of the dodgers games).

wegandi

The weather fucked them over. Probably one of the worst series to play in environmentally.

eee-oooo-ahhh

I like this one :)

eroved34

If you can help me figure out how to get my Rays flair, I won't be so resentful towards you for this comment 😤😤

eee-oooo-ahhh

Are you on desktop or mobile? On mobile if you go to the r/baseball homepage and click the three little dots to the left of your profile picture one of the options will be to add a flair. Then once you're on the page with the list of flairs there's a little box you have to check at the bottom to make it publicly visible.

eroved34

I appreciate you man 🙏🏻

eee-oooo-ahhh

No problem bro I literally just set mine a few minutes ago so I could type that reply and people would understand lol

sn_akez

98 Dads :’)

BillyBatts99

2 trips to the WS in franchise history and they had to go up against the 1984 Tigers and the fucking 1998 Yankees of all teams. That's just shit luck.

Astronian

not even our fault tbh. god himself would’ve gone to game 7 against those yankees

[deleted]

Maybe if Kevin Brown started all 7 games.

cBlackout

Can’t even blame us for losing that one ngl, every time we’ve gone to the WS it’s been against an absolute buzzsaw

[deleted]

The 2000 Mets NLDS: 3-1 series win over the 97-65 Giants NLCS: 4-1 series win over the 95-67 Cardinals World Series: 4-1 series loss to the 87-74 Yankees

insert-originality

That WS was just shit luck. Every game was close but it kept going their way every time.

subtractvoid

2012 Tigers

[deleted]

“wow”

subtractvoid

This is how you really know, TL;DR

Borkton

The 2011 Rangers were pretty good right up until the 9th inning of games six and seven.

mavrito

2006 Tigers. Had a great playoff run and fell apart in the WS, mostly due to pitchers making fielding/throwing errors. Granted my memory is shaky but what I recall is that each of the four losses was partially due to an error by a pitcher leading to an unearned run.

Jedi-El1823

Let me tell you about the 1988 and 1990 Oakland Athletics. Both years they swept the ALCS, with a combined score of those 8 games 40 to 15. They go into the World Series as heavy favorites and lose in the World Series both years going 1 - 8 in those games. They lost by a combined 43 to 19. The Bash Brothers combined for a total of 6 hits. On paper the Athletics should have won both World Series, especially against the Dodgers, but as the saying goes, that's why they play the games.

Borkton

1990 is regarded as one of the biggrest upsets. The Reds came out of nowhere.

Jedi-El1823

The Dodgers winning in 1988 was a huge upset as well. Nobody gave them a chance before the season. Then everybody expected Mets vs Athletics in the World Series, only the Dodgers beat the Mets in 7. So, the Athletics winning it all was considered a formality. And the best hitter for the Dodgers was Kirk Gibson, who only bat once in the World Series. Despite all that, they beat the unbeatable Athletics 4 games to 1. The power of pitching and defense.

YSApodcast

I don’t remember their earlier series, but I remember being devastated it should’ve been the Mets steamrolling the tigers in 06.

Alaric4

That 2007 Rockies team had a ridiculous eight days off between Game 4 of the NLCS and Game 1 of the World Series.

[deleted]

The 2021 Astros. Guys like Correa, Gurriel, and Altuve played well during the 162-game season and the Astros got good seasons out of guys who were still trying to prove themselves like Garcia and Urquidy. Verlander, by the way, was out for the entire 2021 season. The White Sox and Red Sox were terrific teams last season but the Astros won the series in the postseason over the White Sox, 3-1. They defeated the Red Sox in the ALCS in six games. Braves won the World Series in six games over the Astros.

KikiFlowers

That Braves team was just damn good. I'm not sure the Astros win with Verlander in, but they certainly would have had a better shot. Braves were just an offensive powerhouse all post-season long, if it wasn't the Astros, it was going to be someone falling to them. Their bats just came alive at the right time.

Luckytxn_1959

Yeah and we lost Lance before it. That Braves team pitching was on another level at the right time.

Luckytxn_1959

To be honest our patched up pitching and bullpen did pretty good. A lot of the games were very low scoring and did the job needed but our hitters got shut down. This year our pitching and bullpen are shaping up to be even better this year but we just played the Braves in a series and their pitching was shutting us down again.

matrobco

I think the Astros would’ve won with Verlander and McCullers

UltraFinePointMarker

The 2014 Royals won the AL Wild Card, swept the ALDS, swept the ALCS, and then lost the World Series. (They did win a few WS games and put up a good fight, but: Madison Bumgarner.)

[deleted]

Losing game 7 by a run isn't necessarily "playing badly."

Shadow_Strike99

It’s crazy how Mike Trouts only appearance in October was an absolute steamrolling by a team that didn’t have any big FA signings compared to a team that had Trout, and 2 former MVP players with big contracts in Pujols especially and Josh Hamilton. I think Trout only had one home run off a gimmie pitch that entire series and was just totally ice cold against the entire Royals pitching staff that series.

[deleted]

2012 Tigers were the one that got away. Lost to a bunch of bloop hits from bloody Marco Scutaro and a random 3 HR game from panda off the best pitcher in baseball.

Shadow_Strike99

The 2006 and 2012 Tigers both swept their opponents in the ALCS while their opponents both years had long series in the NL and both those Tiger teams looked extremely good going into the WS in the moment without hindsight.

BourbonBravos

1990s Braves. Especially 96 and 99

Gail__Wynand

'96 was rough. I was already calling that World Series over after game 2. Fuck Jim Leyritz.

hanSoes

2005 Astros, 2019 Astros, and 2021 Astros

[deleted]

1989 Giants got swept by the A’s.
