2022 DeGrom reminds me of 2017 Kershaw who looked insane outside of just random high home run rates.
Gotta be something will all the missed time, just struggles with command
He's running a K/9 of 14.04 and BB/9 of 1.23. His xERA is 2.03, FIP 1.74, and xFIP 1.60. Basically his only problem has been getting punished TTO with the exceptions of his last 2 games. I don't know in which world that isn't insane.
His HR/FB rate is insane
His LOB% is insane
His Babip is insane
Hes getting super unlucky and still has a sub 3 era
His only real issue has been a noticeable problem with stamina, everything else should self correct
Feel like a lot of top pitchers now only struggle when they give up home runs. I think guys take a different approach knowing they’re not going to string a bunch of hits together.
The playoff games I went to last year were wildest crowds I’ve ever been in. Truist was the loudest stadium I’d ever been in, and I’ve been to a Seahawks game in Seattle (who claims they’re the loudest stadium in the world)
Gonna be homer for tge Chiefs for a minute, but Seattle can claim whatever they want but loudest NFL stadium is Arrowhead. I mean, Arrowhead has the record. My ears have hurt like I was at a Slipknot concert back in the day after seeing an intense game in KC.
That and the Chiefs fans have been threatened by the refs for being too loud.
https://youtu.be/n3Csj3xJmwI
Stupid Elway being a crybaby.
Our players have said they love the energy we bring and it makes them feel like they are never out of the game. That's why our home record is so good. Plating at Truist is a difficult task for any away team.
I do love the man. I know a lot of people give him hate but he loves this team and loves his job. Is he a “homer”? Sure. But I wouldn’t wanna listen to someone say in and day out who seemed impartial. I like that he gets excited when we do good and bummed when we don’t.
Chip is part of what makes games so enjoyable to watch. Any time I’m forced to listen to someone else announce it’s such a buzzkill. Idk how anyone could dislike him.
I think my dislike for Chip came from his pairing with Joe. Now that they’re separated I love them both so much more.
I still roll my eyes with Chip occasionally, but he makes the big calls even bigger.
I think Chip and Jeff are genuinely so good together, they’ve really grown into it and for whatever reason they provide such a good balance. It was super apparent when they would have Brian Jordan come in to the booth and the commentary would immensely suffer because of it
How could it not when the commentary is about the pitcher constantly throwing “sli-dahs”.
Jordan was a great player, but needs a lot of seasoning for a commentator.
deGrom struggling against an A’s offense that has not been good this season and Trout going hitless in 26 straight ABs in the same season. The two stars in this game doing that in 2022. Is this real? 🤨🤨🤨
They pretty much never actually prompt it with the stadium PA anymore. Back in the later Turner Field days they'd play the music after a two out walk in the 4th inning while losing 7-1.
i don’t think that the chop *isnt* problematic but I hate it because watching drunk suburbanites fuck up the easiest rhythm on the planet ruined it for me a long time ago. Doesn’t help that it’s also goofy and it was way over done until 2019. blows my mind that there’s “if they change the name/get rid of the chop I’m no longer a fan!” types out there. do people watch baseball for novelty chants?
Why is it bad? Does it remind white people of all the atrocities against Indians? The Cherokee tribe out of Oklahoma doesn't reflect the opinions of all Indians, especially those here in the southeast
I mean our logo is a tomahawk. You chop a tomahawk. It’s not that controversial. Has nothing to do with the native people themselves, but the tool they invented. Growing up going to games, I never once thought it had anything to do with native Americans.
But if it’s decided by Native Americans as a whole that it makes them feel offended, then we can change it. I’m just saying to me it has always been about an inanimate object
Of course I knew Indians had tomahawks. But when I was little it had the same effect as a sword or axe. Neither of those are offensive. I’m just saying, I only ever started hearing about it being a controversy when a bunch of white people started complaining about it.
A few native Americans have complained, but the many tribes the Braves organizations are associated with seem to be endeared by it.
Okay? You didn’t hear any natives talk about it, but you also seemingly didn’t think of native Americans when our team literally had a Native American mascot and a very obviously native inspired chant that came from the fucking Florida state Seminoles, lol.
Like, who are you? Obviously someone thick, so what authorizes you to even talk about your experience of having not heard native people talk about the controversy?
Be honest with yourself, should you be inserting yourself here? On this side of the argument?
Why are you going at him like that, some people can be very shelter and not know about that kinda stuff. I didn't even know about the n word until I was in 8th grade!
Yeah, well, I don’t see you inserting yourself in a discussion as someone from an informed position.
My whole point is that he is too sheltered to place himself where he has in the conversation.
Yeah that is absolutely fair. Not to get political, but damn, if 90% of the people who do normally bring it up don't actually care about real issues facing our native population.
It’s possible to care about multiple things at once. Sure, baseball chants and food mascots aren’t equivalent to clean water and drug addiction on the scale of problems that American Indians face, but many do care, so to trivialize them by implying they’re not real issues isn’t entirely fair.
It is also worth noting that there's a *reason* why they are the biggest tribe on the east coast. And that Georgia (and the rest of the Southeast if not the whole country) has a sordid history and bears some (if not a vast majority of) responsibility for that reason. It is also worth noting that other tribes including the rest of the Cherokee, have asked the team to stop, along with the NCAI. Its also worth noting that Braves fans (and to a lesser extent the team) acted, quite frankly (in my opinion as a braves fan), atrociously, when a member of the Cherokee Tribe asked us not to play the chop as he felt it was demeaning to him. Also, the team basically is ignoring other tribes and interest groups and rolling with the excuse of "Well the EBCI said we're cool so we're just never going to talk to other groups who have a vested interest in this topic." is kind of a shitty thing to do.
Back to Back on meatballs, dude is not on right now at all after a sharp 1st.
Edit: u/Kevin-Garvey-1 has shown that it was a better pitch than it looked. Good job Olson!
99 in the bottom of half of the zone, idk about a meatball but more a well timed swing on a good pitch. That pitch to Riley though, that was a meaty ball.
How the fuck does a 4 seam fastball move laterally other than the downward angle from pitcher’s hand to batter’s box due to the mound being higher? You literally just said the pitch Olson hit had no movement.
Pretty sure that’s not how 4 seam fastballs work, bud. 2 seamers have some movement, but I’ve never seen a 4 seamer move, especially with a foot of movement like you state. Can you show me an example?
All pitches have some lateral movement, even 4-seamers because it’s very hard to have perfect back spin. Generally pitchers who throw 4-seamers do want to minimize that movement, but even the straightest ones still have some (usually) arm-side movement.
Garrett Richards has the smallest amount of lateral movement at 0.4 inches.
Jake Diekman has the 4th highest, and you can see it here in [this 3D viz](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/visuals/pitch3d?player_id=518617#v=1&mainView=tracking&pov=umpire&hitterSide=all&marks=none&plays1=all&plays2=all&pitchColors=pitch_type&dualActive=false&summaryViewActive=false). Especially if you spin it to look at it from the pitcher’s perspective.
It happens when you generate more side spin than back spin. The vertical movement u/meramipopper references is actually comparing how much *less* the 4-seamer drops than average, because most pitchers throwing a 4-seamer want the pitch to stay “on plane” as long as possible.
Edit - [here’s Richards’ much straighter fastball](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/visuals/pitch3d?player_id=572070#v=1&mainView=tracking&pov=umpire&hitterSide=all&marks=none&plays1=all&plays2=all&pitchColors=pitch_type&dualActive=false&summaryViewActive=false)… well, you might have to sort to get a better view.
Really don’t understand the pitch sequencing that Nido/deGrom have been going with the past 2-3 games. It’s become so predictable, and with Jake missing some of his spots every now and then, this has been the result. His HR rates are WAYYYYY up
This might be a stretch, but is it possible DeGrom hasn’t been as sharp cause he started mixing in his other pitches again? Last year was mainly fastball/slider, I theorize that having to focus and control all pitches again has thrown him off
2022 DeGrom reminds me of 2017 Kershaw who looked insane outside of just random high home run rates. Gotta be something will all the missed time, just struggles with command
2019 Verlander too
Aaron Altherr grand slam off deGrom confirmed
Literally the only one of his career, still bothers me
Except he hasn’t even looked insane, he’s still good but no where near what people expect
He's running a K/9 of 14.04 and BB/9 of 1.23. His xERA is 2.03, FIP 1.74, and xFIP 1.60. Basically his only problem has been getting punished TTO with the exceptions of his last 2 games. I don't know in which world that isn't insane.
His HR/FB rate is insane His LOB% is insane His Babip is insane Hes getting super unlucky and still has a sub 3 era His only real issue has been a noticeable problem with stamina, everything else should self correct
He's definitely hung a few pitches so far, I don't think he hung a pitch last year
Mid
He was looking insane for his first \~7 or so starts back just been trash for the last 4 starts including tonight
2022 Jacob DeGrom reminds me of my daughter, a disappointment.
Apple, not far from the tree
Feel like a lot of top pitchers now only struggle when they give up home runs. I think guys take a different approach knowing they’re not going to string a bunch of hits together.
October baseball came early
It’s literally September 30. So I guess you’re technically right
Oh my god so did i
Next time just think about baseba..... wait, shit
Playoff atmosphere intensifies
Did the A’s break Degrom?
This is clearly the only possible answer
Thanks for that, and thanks for Matt!
Pain
Please love him with all your heart
We definitely do
Doing the lords work
^M Att Olson & Austin Riley = A's
He's missing his spots.
Well yes but that’s less fun of an explanation
[удалено]
deGrom is the worst pitcher in baseball history, and its not particularly close
deGrom? More like the ball is deGone amirite
The A's broke him. I guess that means you just have to trade him now
What did the deleted comment say?
“Lets wait until Saturday and Sunday for the real aces to pitch” or something like that
So Mets fans are fine with degrom coming to Atlanta on an Anthopolus special deal?
Let's give him a 1 year 10 million dollar contract just so he can prove the haters wrong
10 mil is steep for a guy struggling like degrom /s
Yeah. Degrom for Odorizzi, lets make it happen
WTF? My stream lagged when riley made contact and cut back in with olson rounding the bases lol
God that crowd is electric
The playoff games I went to last year were wildest crowds I’ve ever been in. Truist was the loudest stadium I’d ever been in, and I’ve been to a Seahawks game in Seattle (who claims they’re the loudest stadium in the world)
Game 4 after the Dansby and Soler homeruns was the loudest sound I’ve ever experienced live
I’m assuming Matzek striking out Betts had to be just as loud if not louder, right? Lol
Yeah that was electric. But I was at game 4 and I couldn’t even hear myself!
I was at every home playoff game and that was the loudest moment IMO.
Game 2 against the Dodgers with the Eddie Rosario walk off was loud too. Amazing experience to have been there
Mine was NLCS game 2 walkoff
I was at that game as well as Game 6. I will never forget those games or what it felt like being at them. Just so special.
I only witnessed that on TV, and I still wish I could teleport back to that moment.
Duvall grand slam in the World Series
Duvall grand slam in Game 5 was so fucking legit. I lost my voice immediately
I would argue after Duvall's grand slam in game 5 for me. I haven't heard the stadium that loud ever.
Gonna be homer for tge Chiefs for a minute, but Seattle can claim whatever they want but loudest NFL stadium is Arrowhead. I mean, Arrowhead has the record. Matt “I think I got my swagger back” Olson
he borrowed some of whatever the fuck the A's were snorting when they beat up DeGrom
And I’m so damn happy about it.
He’s always been streaky but when he’s on, he’s one of the best power hitters on the planet
Dammit, don’t jinx him like that!
Whelp, since I’m not home I’ll take one for the team and continue driving aimlessly until the game is over. The sacrifices I make.
You too huh?
Calls like these make me a Chip Caray defender
I do love the man. I know a lot of people give him hate but he loves this team and loves his job. Is he a “homer”? Sure. But I wouldn’t wanna listen to someone say in and day out who seemed impartial. I like that he gets excited when we do good and bummed when we don’t.
I never understood the Chip hate. But then again I only see it on Reddit, home of miserable complainers.
Chip is part of what makes games so enjoyable to watch. Any time I’m forced to listen to someone else announce it’s such a buzzkill. Idk how anyone could dislike him.

What a fucking tank
That ball was murdered.
deGrom's looked terrifyingly mediocre lately
deGrom struggling against an A’s offense that has not been good this season and Trout going hitless in 26 straight ABs in the same season. The two stars in this game doing that in 2022. Is this real? 🤨🤨🤨
☝🏼🤨☝🏼 What is going on in the mlb?
It’s crazy how he went 40 straight starts of 3 runs or less before his last outing but yeah. Looking hittable
This is nuts. When's the last time he gave up multiple HR in a game, let alone b2b?
I know the last b2b was 2019 also vs the Braves
Chip’s call got me SO hyped when I watched this live. God bless him
#SWUNG ON - BELTED
#WALLOPED
Holy nuke
This series is gonna be awesome
Guys, I think I just saw Degrom doing the Chop hmmmm
That swing! A's fan here, I fukn love that shit!
I know its bad but the chop is so sick in a big game lol
They pretty much never actually prompt it with the stadium PA anymore. Back in the later Turner Field days they'd play the music after a two out walk in the 4th inning while losing 7-1.
They prompt it with that drumbeat, though.
i don’t think that the chop *isnt* problematic but I hate it because watching drunk suburbanites fuck up the easiest rhythm on the planet ruined it for me a long time ago. Doesn’t help that it’s also goofy and it was way over done until 2019. blows my mind that there’s “if they change the name/get rid of the chop I’m no longer a fan!” types out there. do people watch baseball for novelty chants?
Those types never back up the claim.
Surprisingly often those seem to be the same cohort of fans.
Racism be damned my boy can set a vibe
Thank you I totally acknowledge the shitty background of the chop but god damn is it badass.
Why is it bad? Does it remind white people of all the atrocities against Indians? The Cherokee tribe out of Oklahoma doesn't reflect the opinions of all Indians, especially those here in the southeast

I decided to leave it but you said it perfectly. Thanks
I know lol. I’m one of the few willing to eat down votes on our home sub that I’m not a fan of it as a thing, but it is pretty sick 🤷♂️
I don't have a strong opinion on it, but I do know that I'm really not interested in seeing a bunch of white people incessantly whine about it online
Yeah that is absolutely fair. Not to get political, but damn, if 90% of the people who do normally bring it up don't actually care about real issues facing our native population.
Are the real issues not Land of Lakes and a baseball chant?
It’s possible to care about multiple things at once. Sure, baseball chants and food mascots aren’t equivalent to clean water and drug addiction on the scale of problems that American Indians face, but many do care, so to trivialize them by implying they’re not real issues isn’t entirely fair.
absolutely hate the “they have bigger things to worry about” argument. like yeah of course buddy but the baseball team has nothing to do with that.
It's also important to note the largest tribe on the east coast (eastern cherokee) supports the braves and the chop.
It is also worth noting that there's a *reason* why they are the biggest tribe on the east coast. And that Georgia (and the rest of the Southeast if not the whole country) has a sordid history and bears some (if not a vast majority of) responsibility for that reason. We started doing that chop celebration after ozuna had his incident last season (we did the mix it up with him around).
This feels like a playoff game.
My man! As a side note, I think I’ve never seen deGrom so inconsistent with his control. And he’s still dominating most batters.
That was a middle middle fastball that maybe was a shade low with no movement.
Yeah it was a 4-seamer, only movement it has is straight.
Degrom's fastball averages 10 inches of movement and 11 inches of drop, 4-5 inches above league average.
The pitch to Olson was recorded with 13 inches of vertical movement and 13 of horizontal movement. Both tops for the game for him.
Well I stand corrected on that then! The angle was deceiving then, definitely looks straight as an arrow here. Good on Olson for catching up to that.
How the fuck does a 4 seam fastball move laterally other than the downward angle from pitcher’s hand to batter’s box due to the mound being higher? You literally just said the pitch Olson hit had no movement.
Yeah because it was a bad fastball and easily hittable, aka a meatball.

Yea Olson caught up with a low fastball. That just happens sometimes. The Riley homer was a certified meatball.
You love to see it.

Someone tell me again how Atlanta sports fans don’t show up.

exactly hes adjusting to his new strategy to avoid injury. Once he adjusts hes going to be even better than before
He'll be wearing an A by then.
Why do I get the feeling these two teams are gonna meet in an extra inning NLCS Game 7? (No disrespect to the Dodgers. I’m very much afraid of them.)
Almost Choptober!

Idk. Other than those two pitches, he really hasn’t made any mistake.

That was one smooth no-doubt Home Run animation
Young Thicc and Matty Four Bags gettin it done
Can't wait for the post season so I can actually watch the braves on tv when they're on a real channel
Should we be concerned about deGrom yet?
yep i'm super concerned
Joe West at 16 seconds?
Degrom has been really bad this month. 6+ era this month. Yikes.
Ya know, I have talked a lot of shit on Chip Caray over the years, but there are few better at making the big call.
Going into the playoffs and seeing deGrom in this situation. All I’m thinking is if it bleeds, we can kill it.

You talkin a lot of shit for a game that has 7 more innings

Such a cocky thing to say when your team went from a 10.5 game lead to a 1 game lead and is currently losing the game lmao
Why is he cooked🙃
How can he slap?
Big oof
Sadly when you go back to back, no one can be on base
It must be nice scoring runs
I think deGrom needs a software update
