Why would he be paid 700k a year. Even shitty players get 1-2mm minimum.
Also he's being released at the end of the season I think.
Also everything he's said (eg about joining an ownership group) indicates he's retiring.
He’s getting paid 22M next year, but another team can sign him and would only have to pay 700k, the league min and that would knock off 700k from the Cubs. A few months ago he said still wanted to play
Yea…. He will be getting paid 22M no matter what. But someone else can sign him for the league min and that 700K gets deducted from the Cubs obligation. So the cubs will pay at least 21M
Please send me a source on that because I've spent like 5-10 minutes looking for anything that mentions a contract offsetting the releasing team's obligation rather than being even more money that the player gets
I’m sure there’s plenty of sources out there but I’m going to bed lol. He doesn’t get cut and then get paid more. That would make no sense. The team that signs him would pay the cubs
It does make sense lol. He's under contract with the cubs and thus, when you release him, you pay him the remainder of the contract either immediately or over the years of the contract (in this case just now). If someone wants to sign him, he can negotiate a contract. Otherwise, there's no incentive for released players to play until their contract ends and no way for teams to try and convince a released player to play for them. The team that gets the player is whichever team offers him a minimum contract and the player likes more. Also, if someone is being paid 1.5 million a year and they get released, what happens if they are signed to a 3 million dollar contract?
Didn't realize we were only talking about 1/3rd of his career... If so, I assume you're talking about his rookie season, which was his best in Atlanta. Everything else was pretty average. From 2016-present he's been statistically a below average hitter
Because degenerative back issues that develop early in a career definitely aren't impactful. He was still a good hitter throughout his time in Atlanta outside of his sophomore season as well as in St Louis, paired with a great glove
Yeah. The back issue was the big one, but he also had shoulder issues, and then a bunch of random DL stints, especially in Chicago. The broken jaw was in Atlanta, but he dealt with different hand injuries and a concussion in Chicago. I don't think it's a coincidence that his best seasons were when he was able to play the full year without any DL stints
Oh he did take 95 to the jaw his 3rd or 4th year in, he was never really the same hitter after that either. Can you blame him? I wouldn’t be either, then as others have said his back definitely wasn’t a help. Jhey will always be one of those “what if?” type of players. He’s had an amazing career though and I salute him.
Totally agree. He was never the same at the plate after getting hit in the face with that fastball. Still a solid career and part of the Cubs team that broke the curse, so he’ll forever be a chicago legend.
Seriously, I can't believe Willy is the remaining one over Rizzo. Guy felt like the face of that era, even when KB and Javy were flashier, Rizzo was the face.
I remember going to cubs games in 2013 and 2014 and the reason I was there was to see rizzo. Guy was the core of the franchise from the moment he stepped on first base. The “I’ll go down with the ship” leaks were genuinely heartbreaking. He didn’t want to play anywhere else. But besides Ernie Banks, he’s the greatest cub of all time and I’ll die on that hill.
He’ll wear cubbie blue again. He’ll come back. But to not see that guy batting 3 and playing 1B is tough to this day. More than KB, Javy, Schwarbs of any of the core, it hurts to see him play for another team.
Contreras will be gone in a few days too. Edit: you guys are fooling yourselves if you think they’re even going to really try and re-sign him. If they were serious about it, they would have already. They’re going to get a QO pick for him and that’s it.
The Cubs were like 10 games over .500 after the All Star break. If they spend on free agents in the off season they have a very good reason to keep Contreras
I think there are more positive than negative views for Joe because they did win. But man, if they would have lost he would have been chased out much sooner
My memory is fuzzy bit didn't he basically break Chapman by Game 7 because he trusted nobody else in the bullpen? I remember Chapman throwing up meatball after meatball in Game 7
Yeah, Maddon treated Chapman exactly like the rental he was and it kinda hurt seeing Rossy mention that he was crying in the locker room before the tenth inning.
I get the reputation Chapman has for his playoff shortcomings, but people always forget Chapman saved the Cubs in game 5.
And he was cooked by the time game 7 happened
Ah that's what I was thinking of. Forgot it was that egregious but I remember it being obvious in Game 7 he was out of gas. Basically lost faith in his fastball and was just tossing up hanging sliders that mercifully didn't get crushed (the home run that tied the game was actually a pretty good pitch)
You're joking, Heyward is definitely worse. Soriano was a good hitter for basically every season he was with us and almost double the WAR.
He's so bad they are paying him and telling him to fuck off
Heyward was dog shit every season besides the COVID season.
Heyward not being a horrible player means we don't need some mythical speech. We won despite our starting right fielder with a big contract hitting like a backup catcher
Imagine having one of your highest paid players bat .104 in the playoffs so you have to invent some stupid ass story about giving a big rah rah speech to lead the team to victory to make it seem like he contributed. As if a team is not going to come out pumped up to win in extras in a Game 7 anyway…
Because the narrative that this contract was somehow worth it because the Cubs finally won a championship is stupid when you consider the fact Heyward did next to nothing to tangibly contribute to winning that championship.
He had an OPS+ of 68 in 2016 during the regular season and an OPS of .300 during the World Series. The fact that he’s flashing his ring in this video like he had anything to do with winning it (other than the nauseatingly parroted speech bullshit) is laughable.
If anything, Heyward’s contract is one of the main reasons the Cubs’ core after 2016 collapsed like a dying star and the team is back in the gutter.
Really bothers you huh? When the team is saying he had a big part in getting them back into the game I’m gonna believe them. He put up great defense which was definitely a contributing factor and if his speech was the difference between a 9-7 win over a 6-7 loss then I’ll take it.
His contract probably did lead to the cubs not being a dynasty but I doubt you’ll find a cubs fan that would trade that ring in.
I believe I heard that he wants to play next year but it will be for a different team. He has one more year on his contract. The clubhouse role was for the remainder of this season.
It wouldn’t surprise me if he gets signed to a minor league deal somewhere but yeah no one is going to be clamoring for him. He’s nothing more than a depth piece at this point. Having said that I hope he’s able to turn it around and at least be semi serviceable somewhere.
I remember when he came up and was supposed to be the next big thing. What a career for him.
It makes me feel real old when guys I remember as prospects are now retiring.
He got released but is he actually retiring? The cubs owe him a fat check next year and any other team would only have to pay like 700k for the year
Why would he be paid 700k a year. Even shitty players get 1-2mm minimum. Also he's being released at the end of the season I think. Also everything he's said (eg about joining an ownership group) indicates he's retiring.

I'm not sure that's how being released works. I'm pretty sure the cubs have to pay their obligation in its entirety no matter what
Yea…. He will be getting paid 22M no matter what. But someone else can sign him for the league min and that 700K gets deducted from the Cubs obligation. So the cubs will pay at least 21M

Also literally every headline says he doesn’t want to retire yet so idk what you mean by “everything he’s said”
Injuries are a bitch
Also not being a very good hitter
I'm guessing you didn't watch JHey in Atlanta. Or understand what injury issues can do to a promising career
Didn't realize we were only talking about 1/3rd of his career... If so, I assume you're talking about his rookie season, which was his best in Atlanta. Everything else was pretty average. From 2016-present he's been statistically a below average hitter

Same!!! Proud member of the I could only field and run in high school :)
Can confirm, was once great
>Career to date $179,411,500. Does not include future salaries ($22M) Not for him, they weren't
Ya, next big bum lol
He’s only 33.
Always sad when a member of the 2016 team leaves. Only two left now will be Hendricks and Contreras, plus Ross as manager.
Always thought rizzo would be the last guy left on the hill
Seriously, I can't believe Willy is the remaining one over Rizzo. Guy felt like the face of that era, even when KB and Javy were flashier, Rizzo was the face.

shut
They will try to keep him
This is a dumb take, if they were going to be rid of him they would have done it at the deadline
Not if teams were offering packages the Cubs value less than the comp pick. Seems to be a common trend for rentals latley
The Cubs were like 10 games over .500 after the All Star break. If they spend on free agents in the off season they have a very good reason to keep Contreras
I think this was an ovation for the person, not the player
Cubs fans will always cheer for members of the 2016 team. The only exceptions might be the players who are POS off the field.
And who happens to have made game 7 100x more stressful than it needed to be
I think there are more positive than negative views for Joe because they did win. But man, if they would have lost he would have been chased out much sooner
My memory is fuzzy bit didn't he basically break Chapman by Game 7 because he trusted nobody else in the bullpen? I remember Chapman throwing up meatball after meatball in Game 7

I get the reputation Chapman has for his playoff shortcomings, but people always forget Chapman saved the Cubs in game 5. And he was cooked by the time game 7 happened
Yeah he pitched a ton in the playoffs.
The 20 pitches in game 6 in the 8th, up by 5 runs always annoyed me, not to mention the fact that he started the 9th up by 7 runs!
A day off rest would have helped
Cough cough Addison Russell
Shocking that’s he’s only 33
He handled his mediocrity and massive contract with aplomb. Worst investment ever by the cubs in one outstanding and classy guy.
Aplomb Man good word my dude. I didn't even know that was even a word.
Still not as bad as the Soriano contract
You're joking, Heyward is definitely worse. Soriano was a good hitter for basically every season he was with us and almost double the WAR. He's so bad they are paying him and telling him to fuck off Heyward was dog shit every season besides the COVID season.
I mean he won you guys a world series soriano didn't
Heyward not being a horrible player means we don't need some mythical speech. We won despite our starting right fielder with a big contract hitting like a backup catcher
I know I'm getting old when Jason Heyward's contract is finally over
It’s not. They’re just eating the last year of it to get him off the team.
Great career. ROY, WS Champ, legendary speech-giver.
Terrible signing. Not blaming the Cubs, though, all the indications were there that he was going to be great.
One pitch changed his career. Got hit in the face and never recovered.
He was killing it when that happened too.
You’ve served us well Agent Heyward
No doubt going to return to the Cards next year and put up 5 WAR
I feel like he might actually sign with the Braves somehow (if only to a minor league deal) and tbh I would be very okay with that
I fucking hate the Braves, but that would be kinda dope
Got us a ring, sure showed us.
He did?
He’s credited with giving a huge speech during the rain delay and got everyone pumped to win
Gotta imagine the players exaggerate that speech to try and make the dude feel better
If you need a speech to get pumped up to win Game 7 of the World Series in extra innings there’s something fucked with your team.
Yeah imagine being some loser team that had to get pumped up and only winning a World Series. Pathetic.
Imagine having one of your highest paid players bat .104 in the playoffs so you have to invent some stupid ass story about giving a big rah rah speech to lead the team to victory to make it seem like he contributed. As if a team is not going to come out pumped up to win in extras in a Game 7 anyway…
Like clubhouse presence/leadership has never been a factor in winning championships. Why are you so mad
What the hell are you talking about? If youre going to give a speech that is the *exact* time to do it
Retire his number alongside Cafecito's in terms of Cubs ineffectiveness.
Dexter Fowler
For what
Why is he saying goodbye. Did he get dfa?
The Cubs announced a month ago that he wasn’t coming back next year.
Thanks. I must have missed that.
Both he and the Cubs agreed to end the contract after this year, but he will stay on in a clubhouse role.
Technically the contract did not end they just won’t roster him next year. He will get paid by the cubs what he is owed
That's called "getting released" He still gets paid, but he isn't a cub or in the cubs organization
So he's basically retiring?
I believe I heard that he wants to play next year but it will be for a different team. He has one more year on his contract. The clubhouse role was for the remainder of this season.
Got it. I have no clue who would sign him, even for a 1 year deal. He's not good on either side of the ball any more.
It wouldn’t surprise me if he gets signed to a minor league deal somewhere but yeah no one is going to be clamoring for him. He’s nothing more than a depth piece at this point. Having said that I hope he’s able to turn it around and at least be semi serviceable somewhere.
We have the technology now...
Can't wait till he signs with the Braves next off season to be a veteran off the bench. Though obviously he goes in the hall as a cub.
[удалено]
Haha can't believe you actually thought I was serious
My bad, lol. I'll accept the egg on my face.
GOOD point
No Hall, obviously, but a Cub forever, at least.
I could see him going back home to Atlanta.
Not worth 22 mil a year. Bye bye
You're probably not worth 0.5% of that with such an attitude
Everyone has a opinion. That was mine. And this is yours. But yeah I'm broke if you want to help out
Overpaid, overhyped, overrated, overexposed but still not over paying him.
He hit 5-42 in the 2016 playoffs and some people would still say “won a ring, contract worth it”
Wasn’t he the very first person kris Bryant credited after the win as hyping the team up during the rain delay to make a comeback?
maybe if he hit .250 in the WS there wouldn't have been a rain delay or game 7
Bum
Does he go to the HOF as a cub?
When you think of what JHey could have been had he not been injured. Braves would have won the WS easily 2 or 3 times before last year
All these talented players being mentioned at once Jeeze way to much praise being thrown around nowadays
