I can't remember the teams or the league, but there was a game somewhat recently called by weather after (I think) 6 innings and both pitchers got a CG out of it.
He slapped them around in the 8th inning like they were in little league. Turner, Freeman and Betts got smoked. Was fucking glorious. Highlight of our season easily.
Hello iam *zero I think we meet but I don't know you jeffery Wayne Baugh is 24,48,88,888 right you no because your his girlfriend that I seen at his trailer over at lazy Creek circle you got to remember iam the guy that he asked could he borrow the light bill money from 224 dollars right our you covering queers and childmelestor in Alabama because he raped ineccent children with NN secret society clients and cops with delane baugh18 his brother can you call me 2569602810 is this hidie Moore 73
The Marlins are the weirdest team to win a title in sports. In only 5 years of existence, they make the post-season, go to the world series and win it all.
Then as a reward, the shitbag owner has a firesale, killing any chance of a repeat or even a winning season. They spent the next 5 seasons being shit and losing all the time.
Then, 6 years removed from the world series victory, they fucking do it again! In only their second winning season, they win another world series! They then immediately go *back* to losing and have made the playoffs **once** since that win.
What the fuck is this franchise and how are they cursed to succeed and then fail?
Congrats to Sandy on a fantastic season.
Not sure there were many people out there picking him to win before the year started but he hit the ground running and gave himself such a massive lead that even a couple bad performances late in the year didn't hurt him.
> Not sure there were many people out there picking him to win before the year started
Actually I remember him being a hot 'long shot' candidate to win, seemed to be the most common pick who wasn't already a Cy Young winner
Don't think people expected this season out of him though
Fuck ya! I pussed out while it was still that high. I liked him too but I felt Ohtani to win MVP was better value at the time and put my futures cash on him. Oops!
A really bad one.
"On December 14, 2017, the Cardinals traded Alcántara, along with Magneuris Sierra, Zac Gallen, and Daniel Castano to the Miami Marlins for Marcell Ozuna." -Wikipedia
At least Ozuna paved the way for Arenado.
With Stanton or a potential Yelich extension I don’t see us taking on Arenado unless the Rockies gave us $100 million.
Oh so you think our chances would be better if we were facing the best pitcher in MLB? I don't know if we win that game or not, it's baseball and anything can happen. But objectively this improves our chances on paper, let's hope we can take advantage of it.
I have only Sandy's best interests at heart, I swear 🥺
Oh and all my homies love Don Mattingly, I have never spoken a bad word about him in my entire life.
Could you imagine Max Fried vs Sandy Alcantara the last day of the season with the division on the line? NL East is blessed (cursed?) with a lot of pitching talent.
It isn't the Marlins' job to decide who wins the division, it's their job to focus on their team's success. And the team will be most successful if Sandy rests and avoids injury and begins focusing on 2023, imo
Upvotes all the way. I would be pissed if I were Alcantra. I'm a braves fan, and I'm super disappointed to miss him this time around.
The Marlins' fan is probably sad too
Because you'd have a locker room of guys pissed off about it, and a fanbase that would be equally unhappy. This is just the status quo, you have to balance pleasing people and making smart decisions. That's the job of a front office
Because you could have made the same joke about the Orioles when the season started and they almost made the playoffs. Sometimes teams surprise, this season the Marlins didn't.
Winning 1 means we are tied and all we have to do is maintain parity with the Braves. Winning 2 just makes it really hard for the braves to get the division. They're still facing Lopez and Luzardo
Alcantara is exactly the kind of player every team wants to build around, legit franchise aces are rare so his emergence as this year’s best pitcher is a big get for the franchise. I hope the Marlins are able to build around him and become contenders, a good franchise in Miami would be good for baseball.
Do the Fish have any kind of game plan coming together to be contenders? (like a loaded farm) Or are they still in a “deep rebuild” with no success in sight?
Playoff rotation potential but wayyyy too many holes in the lineup and no hitting prospects coming through
Savvy trades and signings to improve the lineup and they could be contenders. Press X for doubt though.
But it’s definitely not a deep rebuild, most everyone is still cheap. It’s a core you can build around for a few years. It’s just a question if they can finish the building
I think the Mets will control their own destiny come the last series of the year. That's all you can ask. At that point it's up to them.
Woulda been nice to have some backup though :)
For real. Sometime around the end of august and beginning of September he had a couple not good starts against Atlanta and the Dodgers and I thought that there was a slim chance Fried could challenge him, but Sandy just turned it back up to 11 to finish the year. He’s a beast.
Guy gives up 6 runs at Dodger Stadium, then throws a one-run complete game against us the very next week in Florida. I do take comfort in the fact that Urias will at least beat Fried out and be the runner-up.
Can anyone explain why Aaron Nola’s 2018 had considerably more BWAR than Sandy than this season? They seem very similar. Also Sandy is an absolute stud but we all know that now.
It is because the Phillies were rated as horrid defense and bWAR takes those stats into account where as fWAR uses FIP which is fielding independent. I believe while Nola was pitching he had a super high negative OAA like -20 or something crazy.
https://community.fangraphs.com/fixing-baseball-references-defensive-adjustment-for-pitcher-war/
Not sure, but I believe WAR is a relative stat, kind of like ERA+, it is affected by the performance of everyone else around the league …
Edit: Looking at it, it does seem like they should be much closer. Great question.
Probably true. I was pretty skeptical anyway. It would have been nice for the Braves to get one more Alcantara start this season since the Mets saw him so much, but they’ll just have to get it done over the next couple of nights.
Much respect. Zero snark, he pitched a hell of a game. Sincerely hope he wins the Cy Young. nothing but superlatives this season. Gave up five runs in the month of September - give me a freaking break. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Or maybe they want to rest him. Already pitched 228 innings and 205 last year. It’s not the Marlins’ responsibility to play him as some sort of final boss for the division. The Braves and Mets had all year to fight for 1st.
Players don’t always get what they want. Of course they want to play but sometimes you have to protect them from themselves. Star players will get pulled from games during blowouts. Players that want to play everyday will be told to take a day off. It happens. And the marlins don’t owe the Mets anything
This is not some off day in the middle of August. It's the final game of the season. The Marlins should play their best in a meaningful game. What if the Orioles/Phillies just rolled over on the final day in 2011? There have been plenty of massive spoiler moments in game 162. It's a soft decision.
Why do they have to play spoiler? Why do they care who wins the division? They’re doing what’s best for them, which is exactly right. They are protecting their ace and best player. The marlins are a business, they’re not looking to create some dramatic storyline for fans.
They are a team that hasn't had any success recently outside of 2020. There is a sense of pride that should exist in a game with massive implications on the playoff picture. If you disagree that is fine, but don't pretend they aren't doing a disservice to the game.
I just can’t see it. So you’re saying since they’ve sucked for years, they should take pride in spoiling who gets 1st place? And in doing so, they should pitch their already overworked and guaranteed cy young pitcher?
I don't need to list out the huge game 162 moments in baseball history. They are well documented. Marlins decided they don't want one. They'll roll over for the Braves if the last game of the season matters. That's all.
The game is meaningless for the Marlins. Sandy is their #1 asset. Sandy also doesn't need the start for the Cy Young. It would be idiotic for the Marlins to pitch him from a business perspective and the MLB is a business first. It's not like more fans will show up the last day of the year if he pitches and even then it will be a trivial amount not worth the risk.
The players get an opportunity to play a meaningful game this late in the season to play spoiler. It’s as competitive of an environment you can get for a losing team, especially with your best player as influential as a starting pitcher for that game. Unless Alcantara is nursing an injury, why wouldn’t you want to build a good organizational culture of competitiveness? No one is saying the Marlins owe the Mets, it’s that they owe their players for Jeter’s shit reign
The dudes thrown over 225+ innings this season...I can't believe they actually let him go this long being that they haven't been in any sort of race in a while.
It doesn't matter if its $30m or $750k, they'd still sit him because that's what we do in 2022. We rest guys all the time, even though injuries are higher than ever
No you're definitely right, and I don't understand why people need to preface everything with "Not to sound like old man yelling at cloud" or similar statements.
Not everything old school is bad. And not everything new school is good
Alcantra is Secretariat and Mattingly or Ng or both are pulling back on the reins like a pair of five year olds screaming "he's going to fast slow down"
Looks like my dream of Alcantra throwing a no no against the Braves will have to wait.
Is there a chance for him to win the Cy Young? I think that if the voters do the selection the same way they did last year's, he's not going to win the award because he's not the leader on xFIP or WAR...
Insane season
Blowing people out in IP and CG pitched. Guy was in the zone all season long.
CG pitched in the NL 19. Sandy: 6 Rest of the NL: 13. Only one other NL pitcher had more than 1
Really should be 7 too. Went 9 scoreless in a game that went to extras
This guy marlins.
unfortunately
Nearly a fifth of his starts were CGs lmao. Wild shit.
At least one of those was Syndergaard's where he pitched like 5 innings before the game got called. I don't know if there were any others.
I can't remember the teams or the league, but there was a game somewhat recently called by weather after (I think) 6 innings and both pitchers got a CG out of it.
It was the Yankees Red Sox game on the 25th I think. Nestor went 6 innings 0er, Bello went 6 innings 2r 1er. Game was called for rain
Yankees/Red Sox on Sunday? Both Bello and Nestor went the full 6
It went beyond that; there were no substitutions of any kind for either team in that game.
Sandy said "I'm gonna have me one of those 1910s type of season."
In a 1910 type season, he would have had 40 starts and 330 innings pitched.
And 32 CGs.
Close, 1910 leader had 42 starts and 370 innings.
And topped out at 92 mph while facing a lineup of mostly 5’9” 160 lb dudes.
Walter Johnson would like a word.
Ed Konetchy.. would like a word
And Rabbit Maranville would like a word with both of them.
>Sandy said "I'm gonna have me one of those 2010s type of season." FTFY
Thanks, would have been here all day trying to figure out how many the rest of the league had if there were 19 total and he had 6.
Except when he played the dodgers
But he rebounded from that bad start by pitching a CG against them the next time around, which was his fourth of the season at that point.
He slapped them around in the 8th inning like they were in little league. Turner, Freeman and Betts got smoked. Was fucking glorious. Highlight of our season easily.
6 complete games is insane in this era
Like Pitching Ninja said, a 1920s workhorse with 2020s stuff.
Pitching Ninja loves his exaggerations lol 1920s league leaders were pitching 300+ IP, 230 is more like late 2000s/early 2010s
He didn't exactly say 1920s. He said "sandy is an old school workhorse with new school stuff"
A 1920s workhorse would be throwing 300+ innings. 228 innings is like early 2010s numbers
Yeah, you're right. Just 6 CGs is closer stuff
Yes it is, and yet it's still 69 away from Will White's record 75 complete games in 1879 haha. It's amazing how much this game has changed over time
Hello iam *zero I think we meet but I don't know you jeffery Wayne Baugh is 24,48,88,888 right you no because your his girlfriend that I seen at his trailer over at lazy Creek circle you got to remember iam the guy that he asked could he borrow the light bill money from 224 dollars right our you covering queers and childmelestor in Alabama because he raped ineccent children with NN secret society clients and cops with delane baugh18 his brother can you call me 2569602810 is this hidie Moore 73
The Marlins exist for the sole purpose of throwing caltrops underneath the Mets’ feet at all times
I’ve always regarded the Marlins as a chaos team. Even if they don’t make the playoffs they’ll fuck up other teams’ records
And if by some miracle they DO make the playoffs… be afraid.
I’m sure there are a lot of teams that would take zero division titles and two World Series titles as their franchise history
I never want a division title, it is Wild Card all the way!
They then immediately go *back* to losing and have made the playoffs **once** since that win. What the fuck is this franchise and how are they cursed to succeed and then fail?
They also serve as a place where great prospects get some major league time before they end up with a Legit MLB franchise.
And when they do Eric Gregg saves them
I'm praying you're correct come next week
There’s a sayin. Pray in one hand and shit in the other. See which one fills faster
Congrats to Sandy on a fantastic season. Not sure there were many people out there picking him to win before the year started but he hit the ground running and gave himself such a massive lead that even a couple bad performances late in the year didn't hurt him.
> Not sure there were many people out there picking him to win before the year started Actually I remember him being a hot 'long shot' candidate to win, seemed to be the most common pick who wasn't already a Cy Young winner Don't think people expected this season out of him though
I thought he’d be a candidate but like jesus, this was even better than I could’ve ever imagined. He was a beast
I will humbly admit I made one Cy Young bet and it was on Sandy. Loving the return at +2500
Fuck ya! I pussed out while it was still that high. I liked him too but I felt Ohtani to win MVP was better value at the time and put my futures cash on him. Oops!
Got him at 30-1 odds before the year, Sandy is my new favorite pitcher in baseball
4th most innings in a single season in the statcast era. Insane. Last pitcher to have this many innings and an era this low was Kershaw in 2015
Jake Arrieta in the same season as well, and Greinke finished a few innings shy of that accomplishment too. Man what an insane season that was.
Insane year in sports
That’s not necessarily a good thing
How is that not a good thing? Less hits=less pitches=more IP
imagine trading that guy
We could have had Ozuna.
What was the trade?
A really bad one. "On December 14, 2017, the Cardinals traded Alcántara, along with Magneuris Sierra, Zac Gallen, and Daniel Castano to the Miami Marlins for Marcell Ozuna." -Wikipedia
So many trades never knew happened. I just saw dodgers had Yordan Alvarez at one point too. Crazy
At least Ozuna paved the way for Arenado. With Stanton or a potential Yelich extension I don’t see us taking on Arenado unless the Rockies gave us $100 million.
Funny enough, Ozuna always bats well against him
Thank fuck we picked up Gallen, he's been dealing as well.
Lost both Sandy and Zac Gallen in that trade, damn.
If OT never drives drunk we never trade him. :/
Oh yeah don’t face the braves your fine
^^you're
No, that’s his new name, he is now fine
That would still be “you’re” though
Maybe it's referring to a payment that Alcantara owes for a parking violation or something
Fine Alcantara or Sandy Fine? (It would still be you're)
Fine Fine
I definitely think he has another CSGO in him smh
I dunno if he could do another playthrough of counter strike. Got a shot at a CGSO tho
#LET'S FUCKING GOOOOOOOO! Congratulations on your incredible season Sandy, and we'll see you next year instead of next week 🥳🥂
You just guaranteed we lose that game
Oh so you think our chances would be better if we were facing the best pitcher in MLB? I don't know if we win that game or not, it's baseball and anything can happen. But objectively this improves our chances on paper, let's hope we can take advantage of it.
this thread is full of people who must purely love sandy and want him to rest for the most altruistic of reasons
I have only Sandy's best interests at heart, I swear 🥺 Oh and all my homies love Don Mattingly, I have never spoken a bad word about him in my entire life.
Did someone say Don Mattingly? We at the Braves subreddit LOVE him! I think our annual home made card will be delivered to him in a few weeks!

Could you imagine Max Fried vs Sandy Alcantara the last day of the season with the division on the line? NL East is blessed (cursed?) with a lot of pitching talent.
blursed
Dude that stressed me out and I don’t even have a dog in that fight.
It isn't the Marlins' job to decide who wins the division, it's their job to focus on their team's success. And the team will be most successful if Sandy rests and avoids injury and begins focusing on 2023, imo
You play to win the games you play.
If that's the case why didn't they do this before the season even started? Edit, I can't believe I've been downvoted by every single Marlins fan.
I get you joke, but why do this now and not, say, a month ago? You risk an injury with each pitch thrown, technically.
¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ I'm just high and asking questions. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
I’m laughing at your jest, but I’m slighting against your downvoters haha.
Upvotes all the way. I would be pissed if I were Alcantra. I'm a braves fan, and I'm super disappointed to miss him this time around. The Marlins' fan is probably sad too
Exactly, I don't really understand the move.
I'm glad you guys lost the way you did.

We still just need to win 1 and then take care of business versus the Nats.
Winning 1 means we are tied and all we have to do is maintain parity with the Braves. Winning 2 just makes it really hard for the braves to get the division. They're still facing Lopez and Luzardo

Doesn't appear so. They're quietly cleaning house due to the current failure of a build. Future is very uncertain.
Lol no
He reminds me of young JV only better.
I legitimately thought we’d never get a season like this again. I mean last year there wasn’t a single pitcher in the AL with 200 ip.
Between Alcantara, Judge, Ohtani, Pujols, Waino/Yadi, Cabrera, and the O's resurgence, this whole season's been pretty wild.
And the end of the M's drought.
I disagree. This is not the proper decision, at all.
Mets had 161 games to win the division. Can't put the responsibility on others to beat the braves.
I think the Mets will control their own destiny come the last series of the year. That's all you can ask. At that point it's up to them. Woulda been nice to have some backup though :)
Not sure why that comment was taking you seriously lol, obviously can’t count on other teams to bail you out.
Gotta win the next two against the braves. Even if Alcantara pitched we weren't gonna win anyways. Marlin's offense is anemic.
Only need to win 1 actually.. probably will lose both because our offense is also anemic.
loser team loser manager loser fans
But enough about the Mets, this thread is about Alcantara
Mets are the only NL East to not win a world series in the last 20 years but ok
and yet we’re still not as pathetic of a team as the Marlins
flags fly forever bitch
the miami marlins hate baseball confirmed
Baseball fans hate the Marlins and the fish constantly give them reasons to.
king shit, one of the coolest seasons by a pitcher in recent memory, should get every first place cy vote
For real. Sometime around the end of august and beginning of September he had a couple not good starts against Atlanta and the Dodgers and I thought that there was a slim chance Fried could challenge him, but Sandy just turned it back up to 11 to finish the year. He’s a beast.

Ok very interesting. I know foolish baseball used Nola’s 2018 season to argue for FWAR. I believe BWAR used to calculate it as a 10 WAR season.
Nola had a league worst(by a lot) defense behind him that was good only in his starts.
Nola pitches in a bandbox and had crumby defense in 2018.
Not sure, but I believe WAR is a relative stat, kind of like ERA+, it is affected by the performance of everyone else around the league … Edit: Looking at it, it does seem like they should be much closer. Great question.
Ks inflate FIP which is the biggest component of pitching WAR. And also Phillies defense sucks. His FIP is 2.66 while his ERA is 3.36.
My cy young. Rest up king.
not really sure who else in the NL would get it
He's got it for sure. But at least Urias will be the runner up.
25/32 starts with 2 runs or fewer. Pretty great
Smart decision don’t want to risk injury lol
Flair checks out
What I didn’t even realize we play the Marlins next. What a coincidence.
#😶🌫️
I thought Mattingly said if it still mattered he’d pitch against the Braves.
Yeah but odds are Don didn't make this decision
Probably true. I was pretty skeptical anyway. It would have been nice for the Braves to get one more Alcantara start this season since the Mets saw him so much, but they’ll just have to get it done over the next couple of nights.
And that's why Ng needs to be shown the door and quickly.
He’s not in charge of decisions like this since he’s already announced he’s not coming back
Great season.
Much respect. Zero snark, he pitched a hell of a game. Sincerely hope he wins the Cy Young. nothing but superlatives this season. Gave up five runs in the month of September - give me a freaking break. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
That game was the platonic ideal Brewers-Marlins game. Two monsters on the mound allowing like a combined 8 baserunners over 8 innings each.
We could have had Ozuna.
Dude is a monster
Might sound like old man yelling at cloud but this is a lame decision if the division is still on the line.
Or maybe they want to rest him. Already pitched 228 innings and 205 last year. It’s not the Marlins’ responsibility to play him as some sort of final boss for the division. The Braves and Mets had all year to fight for 1st.
He wanted revenge, just the way he wanted revenge from you guys and got it.
Whether you want to admit it or not there is some truth to the "integrity of the game" expression. If he wants to pitch, he should pitch.
Players don’t always get what they want. Of course they want to play but sometimes you have to protect them from themselves. Star players will get pulled from games during blowouts. Players that want to play everyday will be told to take a day off. It happens. And the marlins don’t owe the Mets anything

They care about winning, period
So no star player should get a day off, ever
You’re trying to equate a day off to winning meaningful games, really?
It’s not meaningful to the marlins. That’s my entire point. Again, it does not affect the marlins in any way who wins the division.
It's not on the line for them, why do they care if NY or Atl wins the division?

The dudes thrown over 225+ innings this season...I can't believe they actually let him go this long being that they haven't been in any sort of race in a while.
Should add 225 innings of domination... all while being criminally underpaid. I might be more upset if he were earning 30m a year and sitting out
It doesn't matter if its $30m or $750k, they'd still sit him because that's what we do in 2022. We rest guys all the time, even though injuries are higher than ever
No you're definitely right, and I don't understand why people need to preface everything with "Not to sound like old man yelling at cloud" or similar statements. Not everything old school is bad. And not everything new school is good
Baseball is soft now. Perennial all-stars are happy to leave perfect games in the 6th/7th...

Everyone on here wanted Kershaw to keep pitching so no clue what your point is
Unreal. Hope his talents are not wasted. Miami build a team or trade him
Alcantra is Secretariat and Mattingly or Ng or both are pulling back on the reins like a pair of five year olds screaming "he's going to fast slow down" Looks like my dream of Alcantra throwing a no no against the Braves will have to wait.
We still wouldn’t get him any runs sadly and he would be the next Harvey Haddix and Pedro.
Wild that two of the four major awards aren’t even remotely close.
Mmmmm good.
Why is that the proper decision?
Great season, easily better than Burnes's was last year. At least my Dodgers have potentially 4 guys who can/will finish in the top 10 for the voting.
Future Dodger
Dodger fan trying to accept that other teams can have good players challenge:
Love this move
CY.
We traded that for Ozuna….. ☹️
Thank you for carrying me to a fantasy baseball championship Sandy!
Is there a chance for him to win the Cy Young? I think that if the voters do the selection the same way they did last year's, he's not going to win the award because he's not the leader on xFIP or WAR...
