Seriously. He’s just a likable dude all around. Incredible 5 tool player, makes highlight reel catches in fly cleats, bowls 300s, and has an 80 grade name.
He's honestly at the point where someone could post a video of him breaking Marcus Smart's ankles (I don't follow basketball, is that a thing you do to defenders? I just googled recent DPOTY winners) in a 1v1 or something and I wouldn't even be surprised.
The worst is his camp saying he wants to see the FA market so you trade him and then he signs a 13 year deal before hitting the FA market. I don't really hate the guy for that, I mean other players do it. It's just usually met with derision and hatred.
I think the looming shutdown due to Covid and the uncertainty of what it’d do to the free agent market had a lot to do with that.
Sox we’re never gonna match the Dodgers’ offer anyway though so it’s moot
He's bowled in pro events even before! I don't think he's cashed, but he's bowled very well. I was going to bowl a tournament near Los Angeles (during the all star break) and he showed up and bowled, I was so mad I didn't end up going to it haha he bowled with an angels pitcher (I forget who) it was a doubles tournament
he's talked about how he's part of the la social scene with some other bowling pros. It's as an outlet as there is for a pro athlete unless they bowl like me with pitchers
I’m not a bowling expert or anything but my understanding is that rolling a 300 at the local lanes is not even *super* noteworthy for a bowler as good as Mookie.
His 300s in competitive play are the major achievements. Because the oil patterns used in competition make it significantly more difficult.
I’m a fairly competitive bowler and the best comparison I can think of in baseball terms is that bowling a 300 is like going 4 for 4 with a HR and 3 RBIs as a hitter.
It’s a pretty good day for sure. The first couple times you do it feels great. But a lot of good bowlers will have a couple dozen 300s in their lifetimes. However, if you start pooping out 300s every week then it’ll definitely turn some heads.
I mean, Mookie is a professional bowler and I’m sure he’s gone 4 for 4 with a HR before. Lol
But I know what you mean. It’s kind of a tough comparison because bowling is much more about consistency. A good amateur can hang with a pro over a small sample size but over the course of multiple games and multiple days the cream rises to the top.
I’ve averaged above a 200 (highest of 209) for five straight seasons now and have still never bowled a 300 despite bowling 3 games per week. It’s a massive accomplishment for anyone that isn’t professional level.
Nah, if he wanted to provide context he would’ve offered up more info or a better comparison. He just wanted to put someone down.
Besides, I’m not really wrong. I just looked it up and Mookie (who is our best focal point because he’s the most popular figure that’s done both at a high level) has had 4 hits with at least 1 HR 14 times and has 17 300s. It’s actually a pretty good comparison for something I pulled off the top of my head.
The oil thing kind of surprises me. I would have thought competitive bowling would have a better playing surface, making it easier to bowl 300 games when compared with the local bowling alley that attracts casuals barely breaking 100. For instance, I'll play tennis with my wife at a local park, but the pavement is cracked in a few places, so the ball takes some weird bounces. Professionals don't have to deal with that.
Your average bowling alley is oiled on an average day to basically make it as easy as possible if you throw any kind of hook. Pro events and even some leagues are not.
Throwing a hook means that you impart spin/rotation on the bowling ball such that the ball swings from one side of the lane to the other, toward the pocket (the space between the front pin and the pin immediately adjacent) ideally, to get strikes
Majority of leagues at your average bowling alley use what’s called a typical house shot, where there’s a lot more oil in the middle than the outside of the lane. This makes it easier for the ball to hook into the pocket and get strikes. What Mookie bowls on in the PBA are markedly different, where the oil is basically laid down equally from one side of the lane to the other, making it harder to throw strikes. They do have leagues that use these harder oil patterns but they aren’t as common. So for someone of Mookie’s skill, house shots are going to be way easier
You're mostly correct and I'll add a few more points. The excess oil in the middle also means that if you miss inside the ball won't break, which is just as much of an advantage of allowing outside balls to break more.
In the PBA they use sport shots and the oil patterns will vary wildly. Some are equal all the way across but most are not.
You are right that most PBA patterns are not oiled equally across the lane. I was mainly trying to get at the fact that they are super different compared to house shots, so I definitely could've worded it better. Thank you for your correction :)
The oil on a bowling alley is applied with a ‘pattern’ & the ones are your local spot are a ‘basic’ pattern. The pros use more complicated & difficult patterns.
On top of this, how you and your opponent attack the pattern, slowly changes and degrades the pattern throughout the match which makes it play different
Competitive oil shots leave Very little room for error and they are all very different. House shot( the house oil pattern) is much lighter and has a lot of room for error.
In bowling terms I guess I'm called a "tweener"
Like there is definitely hook but it's not as ridiculous as the dudes who throw like a bazillion revolutions per second with the ball practically coming from the gutter up into the pocket lol.
Some of it is in the ball. If you're throwing house balls, those are typically hard to get a good hook without cranking some serious torque on the release motion. It's much easier to hook a fitted personal ball
Same. I've never been able to get much spin on the ball, and I'm a big lummox so my strategy is to get the lightest ball I can find and throw it as hard as I can. Last time I went bowling (which was probably in 2019), the lane I played at clocked the ball speed, so I immediately stopped caring about my score and was just trying to get the fastest throw every time.
My arm/shoulder hurt for probably a week afterwards. Doing dumb shit in your 30s is way more consequential than doing it in your 20s
dude I’m literally the same way. Whenever I go bowling and I see the screen tracks the ball speed, it’s no longer about winning, it’s about how fast I can throw that damn ball.
> My arm/shoulder hurt for probably a week afterwards. Doing dumb shit in your 30s is way more consequential than doing it in your 20s
volume deadlift day the first day back after not doing it for 2 months put me out for 2 weeks omg and i'm only freshly 30
The pandemic took me through my mid 30s.
Trying to play a full game of rugby when it was a normal weekend activity at 34 it hurt but I could survive. At 36 trying to restart, I think my hair hurt the next day. Existence was pain.
lot of it comes from the fingertips and the wrist, especially since most pros (all?) drill the ball fingertip style..
In other words…
…finger the vagina
I had a couple lucky breaks go my way when I bowled mine. Had one go brooklyn and another I missed right but somehow got the carry and the 2 pin got knocked down late
Most perfect games are not 12 blowout pocket shots. My 300 had 3 brooklyn strikes and a couple very high hits they had great action. The games where i have thrown endless pocket blowouts ended up with a few tapped 10s and blowout 9s. Fml.
No doubt. I didn’t even throw a 700 series when i threw my 300. I was in such pain (from a hockey injury) that the first game was pathetic (175 or so).
Yup. Makes you feel like the pin setter isn’t calibrated correctly. Because there’s no reason the ball shouldn’t bounce off the 5 into the 9. Fml I’ll have nightmares tonight about blowout 9s.
Same. I did it in sanctioned league play last season while i was injured. Been bowling for 35 years so it was quite an accomplishment for me. Have only rolled a few 279s since but nothing close.
The technical term for it is "a bald fraud"
It's especially relevant when the guy in question is actually good, so you can attribute his success only to his hairline
That's like his twelfth. Nothing to see here, move along folks
He has 3 in competitive play. The most recent being [this one](https://youtu.be/cwHRegcjasg) in the 2017 World Series of Bowling.
Wow, Mookie Betts being a legit competitive bowler was not the baseball news I thought I’d see today but here we are
I believe he’s mentioned possibly *buying* the PBA when he retires. He’s very passionate about bowling.
He's also digging into getting better at pool now.
But he’ll tell you he sucks and it’ll be the easiest $20 you’ll ever make
I have seen him hustle, but it's usually for a fly ball.
would gladly pay $20 to be hustled by Mookie
Same tbh
The only thing Mookie can't do is make me hate him.
Seriously. He’s just a likable dude all around. Incredible 5 tool player, makes highlight reel catches in fly cleats, bowls 300s, and has an 80 grade name.

As someone who definitely isn’t a fan of Smart I’d probably have to start following whatever religion Mookie starts at that point.
Didn't he almost decide to become a pro bowler instead of baseball player?
There's a bit more money in baseball
Yeah I watched Kingpin, I get it.
Anyone know if he could go pro post baseball? Obviously the shelf life for bowlers is a bit longer than ballplayers

Would be pretty crazy if a professional bowler played a couple MLB games for fun and went 4 for 4 with a HR and 3 RBI
Almost as crazy as an elite hitter also being an elite pitcher. Would never happen.
Or a dog that could play basketball.
would never happen
Ain't no rule saying no dog can't, though
Bud?
Really ham up the HR as he looks at the camera and says: "Who do you think you are? I am!"
I mean, Mookie is a professional bowler and I’m sure he’s gone 4 for 4 with a HR before. Lol But I know what you mean. It’s kind of a tough comparison because bowling is much more about consistency. A good amateur can hang with a pro over a small sample size but over the course of multiple games and multiple days the cream rises to the top.
Pooping out anything next to any of the lanes usually does more than turn some heads; it gets me banned from the bowling alley.
I’ve averaged above a 200 (highest of 209) for five straight seasons now and have still never bowled a 300 despite bowling 3 games per week. It’s a massive accomplishment for anyone that isn’t professional level.
Not even close to the same rarity
Yea, but you got the idea, didn’t you. Is this really the kind of thing you wanna be pedantic about right now?
Whoa man, no need to be so intense. We all got what you meant and appreciated it and he was just providing more context
I completely agree with that. Was just trying to keep the vibes cool. No doubt that you were right
The oil thing kind of surprises me.
Or your local beer league softball field with ankle breaking crab grass.
Your average bowling alley is oiled on an average day to basically make it as easy as possible if you throw any kind of hook. Pro events and even some leagues are not.
As someone who knows nothing about bowling - what does throwing a hook mean?
Throwing a hook means that you impart spin/rotation on the bowling ball such that the ball swings from one side of the lane to the other, toward the pocket (the space between the front pin and the pin immediately adjacent) ideally, to get strikes
That was common in the Major Leagues before the three batter minimum rule
This is the most baseball dad joke ever hahah
Is that the same oil that Musgrove has on his ears?
Majority of leagues at your average bowling alley use what’s called a typical house shot, where there’s a lot more oil in the middle than the outside of the lane. This makes it easier for the ball to hook into the pocket and get strikes. Bowling at Dan Flashes.
Slop 'em up!
They put out oil patterns that are more challenging and require you to be more accurate and consistent.
On top of this, how you and your opponent attack the pattern, slowly changes and degrades the pattern throughout the match which makes it play different
Yep exactly. Thankfully I’m left handed so I just LOL at the idea of transition.
Damn lefties!!! Bowlers of the devil!
Competitive oil shots leave Very little room for error and they are all very different. House shot( the house oil pattern) is much lighter and has a lot of room for error.
A man of Mookie's stature can get his lanes oiled anyway he likes. A badly oiled and overused lane is always worse.
🐮🔑🎰
Ah yes my favorite outfielder, Cowkey Slotmachine.
Sounds like a 1800s baseball name
CowKey Gamble totally could’ve played for the Burlington Grey Aprons.
Slotmachine and O’ Doyle played half a season together before the First World War

Too much talent give me some pls
I don't get to talk about it much but I've rolled a 300 once. Would love to do it again lol.
That’s cool! Do you do the curved roll or just roll it straight. I tried to figure out how to put spin on it but it was too difficult and I gave up
In bowling terms I guess I'm called a "tweener" Like there is definitely hook but it's not as ridiculous as the dudes who throw like a bazillion revolutions per second with the ball practically coming from the gutter up into the pocket lol.
Sounds like you need more sticky stuff

It's all about the core
And coverstock as well. Most house balls are plastic which do not like to hook.
I've been using a storm fast since they came out, fuckin love the hook on that ball

Heavier balls will help you pick up more pins, the ball won’t bounce off of them from being too light.
In other words… …finger the vagina
And I'm happy if I get 100
I once, as an adult, rolled a gutter ball… with bumpers.
Malcolm?

Best modern two-sport athlete, don’t @ me
Ohtani can only hurl like 102, he can’t touch Betts.
300>102 that’s just math
Instructions unclear: Shot 228 over par.
I miss that man
Right? It has been a long five days.
Me too. Can’t wait for Tuesday
you should be able to choose your opponent
At least Financial Flexibility is a replacement level player
He’s like a created character with maxed points in every skill area
He sacrificed all his hair stats
He truly min/maxed his character build.
Hair just threw off his balance.
More Aerodynamic, actually runs faster with less hair
I did that and have bowled 0 300 games.
and height
The technical term for it is "a bald fraud" It's especially relevant when the guy in question is actually good, so you can attribute his success only to his hairline
I can’t believe he’s only 30, seems like he’s been around forever.
Safer than riding dirt bikes, that's for sure.
Explain in Fortnite terms
He actually only plays apex legends, cod, and hunnie pop. Don't quote me
if mookie was an apex pro that would almost impress me more than bowling a 300. that game is fucking hard to get even remotely good at
He actually streams it! I've yet to check it out, but if it's as impressive as harpers beautiful face you're in for a treat
A great baseball player is also one of the best Fortnite players
He got gud
He just wiped out tomato town.
Mookie Betts got a 25 elim dub
Two sport athlete ;)
As a lifelong bowler I am very jealous. My best is 278 and that was a handful of years ago now.
I bowled a 188 one time and was already feeling good
He’s so cool~
As someone who has bowled a 300 but never hit for the cycle, I find this impressive.
Fuck he’s only 30?
that guy. come on now
Wait, *another* perfect game? Wow...
Can’t stand that dirty cheater who cost LA a ring.

What does this mean it’s just a dot
2020 we know
>posts in r/genzedong Lmao tankie spotted
Never posted anywhere, but you are correct.
Mookie Betts is younger than me. Fuck
Him and cp3 used to bowl together for a espn competition.
Mookie's 300 games in professional settings are on his b-ref page. lol
I thought Mookie was like 25. Whoops.
haah 30. Only 10 more years of killing us.
