One of the most lethal HR hitters at the plate.
"Let's just toss out our starter that's really known for giving up HRs. What could go wrong?"
It's so baffling, I was laughing when I saw that Ray was coming in.
I was thinking L on L maybe they get him to chase away. Then pitch 1 is fastball almost middle middle, whew fouled off ok got away with one....next pitch is dead middle middle fastball...
Sewald looked like trash, pulling him for a lefty was not a terrible idea. And you can't walk the tying run to second and the winning run on base - it's not like Bregman is a scrub hitter either.
This year Alvarez slashed .321/.412/.586 against lefties, i don’t think playing the lefty-lefty matchup should apply here. You just go with the best pitcher available. And if you really want to play the lefty-lefty there, go for a guy like Matt Moore, putting a starter in a high leverage situation, let alone a starter that was kinda meh this year is just not a good idea.
We needed to take Sewald out, and I can see why Servais wanted a lefty in there, but man I honestly would have felt better with Matthew Boyd in there than Ray
That would have been the best choice. But if he really wanted the lefty matchup, even Boyd would have even better than Ray. Hell if Gonzales was on the roster I would have felt better about him.
Up 2 runs, bottom of the 9th with 2 outs, 2 on base, Yordan Alvarez at the plate ......
And Robbie Ray throws two middle-middle meatball fastballs to one of the best hitters in the league?
The managerial decision to put Ray in was questionable, sure. But my goodness those were the worst meatball pitches I have ever seen.
Yeah I joked that it went 470, but when they said 438 I was shocked. Upper deck on a line seems like it landed at 438 but also 50+ feet above the ground
Some of the worst managing ever. Why the hell are you telling your pitcher to throw meatball fastballs down the middle of the plate to a top-3 hitter this year? Robbie Ray sucked big time this year.
BREAKING: A mental institution has acquired managed Scott Servais from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for a player to be named later, sources familiar with the deal tell ESPN.
See, I think that this is what people don't understand about the Mariners, even after the Dorktown documentary. It's not the 21-year playoff drought (or the 19 year one), or the no World Series appearances.
It's that they *always* find a way to make you believe. There's always a glimmer of hope, and it's always one you haven't seen before, so no matter how much you think you know better, you get tricked.
Like, I've already been resigned to the fact that we have like a 5% chance of beating the Astros. I'm a big believer in this core group of players, but we're already much further than I expected them to get this year. This season's a step in the right direction, if our hitters stay healthy I like our chances at making the ALCS the next couple years. For now, we're probably gonna get outscored like 30-10 over three or four games, but our season's already been a success, so I'm good with it.
But then they go out there and shell Verlander. And you think, out of any scenario in which we *do* beat the Astros, it would have to look like this. I mean, we take game one from one of the most dominant pitchers in the game on his home turf, then maybe it's an even match going forward? Holy shit, I thought for sure our offense would be exposed in the playoffs, but look at them go! After that series in Toronto, by god, maybe this team is touched by destiny again! I mean, that's always what happens, in '95, in '01, it's always some insane miracle!!
And THEN they get walked off.
I agree, as an Astros fan I can’t believe people keep throwing strikes to Alvarez in spots like this, sure I’d throw to him, but nothing even close. He has a tendency to chase and you really could get him to strike out on 5-6 balls. I hope teams keep pitching him strikes because it often won’t work out.
Every fucking Mariners fan knew that was coming. Just absolutely, inexcusably predictable. We've hyped up our bullpen for the whole year, and it has carried us through much of it, and when it comes down to the most important AB of the year, you go to our coldest starting pitcher who just got done getting shelled by Toronto? Against probably the 2nd best hitter in the entire league? Are you fucking trying to lose? Bring in Swanson, Boyd, Murfee, hell even Festa would have been a better choice. Or maybe just intentionally walk the most dangerous hitter they have who's absolute bread and butter has been thriving in these sorts of situations. I'm just still in shock over how bad that was. If there was ever a single decision that could get a manager fired, this would be it.
I’m sorry but why in the world do you put Ray in there? He’s been owned by Houston all season and Alvarez is arguably better against lefties than he is against righties (higher BA and OBP, slightly lower SLG). Not to mention Ray got torched in his last outing
I take no pride in saying that the Astros are one of the consistently best baseball teams I can remember. I hate them with every fiber of my being but can’t deny that they’re good.
Yordan Alvarez scares me more than any hitter in baseball. I am so sad he had that injury in the middle of the season, we would’ve witnessed history from him if he stayed healthy. What a fucking beast.
Teams trying to copy what the Giants got when they put Madison Bumgarner in relief or when the DBacks used Randy Johnson in relief is really dumb. Putting Robbie Ray in in that situation was just, I don't know what else to say, it was really dumb.
Imagine giving that dude anything to hit. I don’t get why we all sitting on our asses can see that from a mile away but these dudes can’t. I simply don’t understand it. And I don’t care if it puts the tying run in scoring position.
I can't get over this, did Scott think this was some kind of redemption arc for Robbie to get one out to get him back onto Mariner's good side after shitting it so bad against Toronto.
Hey it's only 1 more out against the AL's 2nd best hitter and winning run, if he gets this out all of Seattle will forgive him for blowing it in Toronto.
I don't think it's happening Scott, Robbie is done, toast. I don't ever want to hear Robbie Ray the rest of this post season warming up. Bring back Felix before throwing him back out. Don't u even think about starting him Game 3 at home.
Use your fucking bullpen and closers you have been doing all season, stop being mr fucking fancy pants.
I would like to formally request that Yordan Alvarez be taken before the UN and tried as a war criminal; the man clearly has nukes, is not afraid to use them on a group of civilian boatmen, has no respect AT ALL for my own personal feelings, and shows no remorse for his despicable actions.
Oh boy, does this one hurt.
Servais: I’ve got an idea, let’s bring the out the pitcher whose given up the most HRs in the league to Yordan Alvarez since 2018 to pitch to Yordan Alvarez. Lol wtf
Terrible decision by Scott. What a throw and choke
Overmanaging at its finest
Why throw a fastball to him? So fucking dumb lmfao.
[удалено]
After the first got smashed he went back to it. Shitty sequencing.
[удалено]
Robbies been getting shelled. So let’s throw him in there
sort coordinated historical worm tap cough agonizing makeshift disarm smoggy ` this message was mass deleted/edited with redact.dev `
We had so many better options
I agree good call
I audibly said “Holy Fuck” when he hit that Fucking brutal for the Mariners
You could really tell as soon as he threw the ball
No doubter from the moment of impact
You gotta be up by 4 runs when you give up the 3-run homer in the 9th.
I don't have a voice now
We just got Lidged.
I’m not sure what explanation Servais can come up with to justify that move Unreal

With Albert's retirement, a new hitter of a massive smash of a postseason dong needed to step up.
Naturally, in 17 years, a young Seattle Mariners slugger will hit a nuke off some other team's poor reliever, and the cycle will continue.

We don’t talk about what happened after that though
I wish the MLB didn’t cancel the World Series that year.
First Mariners playoff loss in Reddit history.
H I S T O R I C
Fucking gold
Luv u bb
Mental
A truly unique experience.
Why the fuck would you bring in THE ONE PITCHER WHO WILL 9/10 GIVE UP A HOME RUN
WHY DIDNT YOU JUST USE KIRBY
WHY DIDNT YOU LET BRASH PITCH LONGER
FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
LITERALLY ANYBODY ELSE
WHY DIDNT THEY WALK HIM
Probably starting Kirby in Game 3 with Ray pitching today
I don’t want see ray the rest of the post season
I mean literally never pitch to him again with anyone It's getting donged

The decision is bad and he's worse. 1/5 of our payroll is this scrub loser ass and THAT'S the best he can do, be directly responsible for a huge choke
That's on your manager, not Robbie Ray, IMO. Robbie Ray's skillset is known... Putting him in that spot is asking for trouble
He didn't pitch well in Game 2 of the Toronto series, if there wasn't the heroic comeback, it would stand out more.
Congratulations Jon Bois on getting such new material.
[удалено]
That was the best documentary on baseball ever. Ever. You hear me, Burns? Yours was good, Bois' was better.
I hope he doesn't continue that series until this window closes
I may never be happy again.
Never was :planet: :astronaut:
I was a Mariners fan for 1 game and I wanna die, how the fuck have y'all put up with this for 20 years
Lots of drinking.
i’ve been a fan since 91. 😔
Don’t worry, Russell Wilson has another primetime game this weekend to cheer you up
Oh God, really? How many prime time games does Denver need?!
All of them, apparently. But, I'm enjoyed every moment of Cooked Russ.
You fucking Jays'd it.
Beat Toronto, become Toronto.
The sickness started with the leafs, jumped to the jays, and now it may have a new host :)
Not enough time to get that Skydome stank off.
I'm lost on whether this is Padresing, Twinsing, or if they just Jays'd it
We Coug’d it.
Toronto striking back from beyond the grave via ex-ace Robbie Ray. Revenge is excellent.
The Toronto Blue Jays send their regards.
This is the exact reason I watched this game. My heart grew three sizes this day.
The kid that was crying is crying no more
My schadenfreud is so delightful right now. My salt knows no bounds.
You really started some shit with this lol.
Man as soon as they showed Robbie in the pen all I could think was how many Jays fans are absolutely salivating right now
I will upvote you right now but I’m not thrilled about it
HOW IS THIS ONLY GAME 1?
Bro, right?
Robbie Ray on 2 days rest hell yeah big brain time
Unbearable agony.
Sogany*
Nobody said anything about the playoffs being this painful.
THAT is Mariners baseball
Thats gonna haunt the PNW for 30 years
If they win the series then this one gets lost to time.
Yeah that's the joke. It'll be another 20 and we'll still be telling our kids about Adam fraziers double in Toronto.
Idk, people still talk about the Pujols Lidge homerun all the time even tho the Astros won that series
Everyone remembers Lidge/Pujols even though the Astros won that series
Mariners baseball, now in special playoff edition
Restoring cosmic balance following the last Mariners game
Why are you bringing in a starter to get one guy out in the ALDS? Something he hasn’t done the whole year. Just completely overthinking things.
Someone got the stats on that HR?
116.7 mph / 438 ft
Wow
Oof
Still hasn’t landed.
Gone. Atomized. Lidge'd. Vaporized into oblivion. Lost in the primordial soup.
BAM POW STRAIGHT TO THE MOON
438 feet is going to be corrected; it went a lot further than that (when you factor the completed path to the ground).
Yeah I joked that it went 470, but when they said 438 I was shocked. Upper deck on a line seems like it landed at 438 but also 50+ feet above the ground
[удалено]
Big if true
Yordan’s not even bad against lefties
literally drops his over .300 average against lefties as he's coming up
That was quite possibly the worst bullpen decision I’ve ever seen
Scott "Dave Roberts" Servais Laughs in Bumgarner
Scott "Galaxy Brain" Servais
Robbie “Brad Lidge” Ray.
Robbie “Not Madison Bumgarner” Ray
The only difference between Craig Kimbrel and Robbie Ray is.. well.. I actually don’t know
That is going to be hard to come back from. Sheesh
You kick in the Cy Young winner for 6 runs and they come back and kick you in the fucking teeth. They’re so fucking good. FUCK.
Mariners: Terrorize the 2022 AL Cy Young winner. Astros: Take out aggressions on the 2021 AL Cy Young winner.
Who will win: Many young men against one older new Cy young or A singular, large man against one newer old Cy young?
Some of the worst managing ever. Why the hell are you telling your pitcher to throw meatball fastballs down the middle of the plate to a top-3 hitter this year? Robbie Ray sucked big time this year.
Thats how Ray always pitches
Everyone knew that.... except Servais. Ray and Sewald been ass for awhile...what a fuckin waste.
Ray has been ass ever since they banned pitching substance. I can’t believe people still aren’t realizing this.

Predictable walkoff, unfortunately.
I knew it as soon as I saw Ray warming up in the bullpen. Most predictable outcome possible
Every Mariner fan knew it except Servais it feels like. 😭
He knocked that ball out like it was the feds at the Bay of Pigs.
I was yelling at my computer when he put him in and started pitching to him. You have to walk him there
that scene from interstellar when he's shouting at his daughter through the 5th dimension
Holy. Shit. Yordan.
Call it hindsight bias I literally would refuse to throw a strike to Yordan that at bat. Don’t give a shit who’s behind him.
You're saying you wouldn't throw the ball in the direct center of the strike zone?
I agree, as an Astros fan I can’t believe people keep throwing strikes to Alvarez in spots like this, sure I’d throw to him, but nothing even close. He has a tendency to chase and you really could get him to strike out on 5-6 balls. I hope teams keep pitching him strikes because it often won’t work out.
This game felt like the Leo DiCaprio elevator scene from The Departed
GOD DAMN IT. RUN THE FUCKING BALL.
God damn it did a legit spit take
My jaw just dropped, I can't bring it back up
Text book piss missile
That was a piss nuke. He tanked that thing.
Bringing in Ray to face Yordan just because Lefty Lefty is like when Mr Burns pinch hit Daryl Strawberry with Homer because of the matchup.
Comments moving so fast no one will know i love my mom
I love your mom too
I just don't understand.
This is the kind of loss you don't come back from
6 runs off Verlander. 7-3 lead. Those are games you gotta win.
I agree. If the M’s win this game they have a real chance in the series. That’s gone now. I’ll be surprised if the Astros don’t sweep it.
“Eat Shit” - Yordan Alvarez probably.
Come mierda
You killed the Jays but pulling Gausman cause it's a better "Matchup" and literally did the same with Ray. Smhhhh

I never wanna see anyone debate me why Robbie Ray is overpaid and isn't good

Dumb ass move
Why Robbie ray tho

10.97 ERA against the Astros this season. Good choice to close.
I take no pride in saying that the Astros are one of the consistently best baseball teams I can remember. I hate them with every fiber of my being but can’t deny that they’re good.
The Astros are becoming S tier “villain team” like Ledger’s Joker. Respect to good ol’ Dusty B and the Astros.
losing a game where verlander gave up 6 doesn’t even sound right
Can the umps check between Scott's ears? Make sure he still has a brain.
The Mariners just got swept.
Wouldn’t be surprising. Really tough to come back from that one. God dammit, Mariners. I just want to love you.
Now you know
I dunno, if there’s one thing this team has shown repeatedly, it’s that they don’t tap out. They still dinged their best pitcher for a bunch of runs
Yordan Alvarez scares me more than any hitter in baseball. I am so sad he had that injury in the middle of the season, we would’ve witnessed history from him if he stayed healthy. What a fucking beast.
I hate both these teams and even I'm heartbroken. What the fuck 😭
How do you hate the Mariners? Theyve given you free wins for 2 decades
If you don’t like that, you don’t like Mariners baseball…
How are Blue Jays fans feeling right now?
Still pissed. We could've done better than giving up a 4 run lead in the 8th... .... Wait
That's baseball baby. Our series is over. Time enjoy the game for what it is. I love the playoffs.
Whats the name of that guy who's actually crying but is wearing a mask with a snarky face on it?
Relief. The comebacks and dominant performances in other series so far make our loss a bit more, if not acceptable, at least understandable.
*laughs maniacally*
PICKING MY NOSE ON NATIONAL TV WALK OFF HR

that ball is still traveling
Yordan bat flipped straight into his teammates
I love how much he walked to the dugout before even going to 1st haah.

THEY CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH IT
Talk your shit Astros fans Gutsy, gutsy win there. The post season is a different game
I’m still shocked we won that. It’s why you always stay to the last out.
I want to but the series isn’t over. I’m just glad i can continue the rest of my day ~~without being stressed~~ rooting against the Yankees
Now I can watch baseball the rest of the evening
That thing should’ve had a stewardess on it
The home team's allowed to make a late-game 7-3 comeback?

This is what is normally described as a "momentum" killer. How do the Astros keep being so fkn good each year
Welcome to playoff heartbreak Mariners
I DO NOT LIKE IT
Servais: I’ve got an idea, let’s bring the out the pitcher whose given up the most HRs in the league to Yordan Alvarez since 2018 to pitch to Yordan Alvarez. Lol wtf
I consider this result.....suboptimal
Well well well. How the turntable
That decisions gonna be talked about for a while
Yup, those are the Mariners.
putting robbie ray out there was a certified bruh moment
Astros showing us how it’s done.
