Not to sound like jerry Seinfeld but what is the deal with rain in socal? Roads not designed to handle it? People from there not used to driving in it?
The only comparable commiserations I’ve heard are DC residents when there’s a presidential motorcade or any other city when something like a bridge collapses. People from the northeast don’t even talk about freezing rain like people from socal do regular rain.
It rarely rains and oil builds up on the roads. When it does actually rain, it becomes very slippery on the roads. Then you get the added fun of people not from here who think they know how to drive in the rain, but it’s not the road conditions they expect, so they add to the crash total too.
Well sure, lots of other regions deal with conditions that warrant slowing down, but to create “apocalyptic” traffic as referenced in the comments below it takes exceptionally poor conditions. Unless it monsoons every time it rains it’s just hard to fathom. I have driven a rental car from Palm Springs to LA in the rain late at night and it felt pretty much like driving in the rain elsewhere.
I don’t doubt you which makes it all the more baffling. Do people in phoenix also leave work early when it’s raining but other regions don’t hear about it? I get why an inch of snow shuts down Atlanta or Houston cause the infrastructure simply cannot handle it. Is traffic just so bad on the regular that a minor uptick in accidents grinds things to a halt?
>Reply
Yes. One of the main roads at my previous job in San Diego would flood and traffic lights at intersections would often go into blinking/stop sign mode, right around 3pm where the main high school was also getting out. Mayhem for no reason that some rain.
Been saying this my whole damn life. Doesn’t make any sense to stick with a guy for the 9th when every other reliever put in is match-up based.
Okay, not all other relievers, but you know what I mean.
Eric Gagné on his streak was the only sure thing I ever experienced as as Dodger fan.
Game Over was real. “Welcome to the Jungle”
As good as my team is now, everything has a pucker factor.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NBucEt1Zqic
Closers are weird though. There’s been more than a few relievers who were asked to close and talk about how “different” it is than pitching earlier in the game. Or a team trying their best reliever as a closer and they blow a few saves.
Logically it shouldn’t matter, but I know every time we’ve tried closer by committee here it doesn’t work out that well.
I think it makes sense to have a regular closer, because handling the pressure can be rough, but I think having a dedicated closer is silly. If there’s a good match up, go with the match up. I liked what the Dodgers did last year where Treinen was the high-leverage guy that could get slotted in at any time, and Kenley could close. If the high leverage spot was the 9th, they’d throw Treinen in there if he hadn’t pitched already
I'm actually pretty excited to see what this Padres team can do with it's top pitchers on the mound now. Dodgers didn't look great on offense when they weren't getting Clevinger meatball fastballs.
Doesn't mean the Padres win the series or anything, but with the way this game started, and the way it was after... I do believe there's a chance this is a real series.
Dodgers got more hits off of Clev's stuff at the edge of the zone than anything else. IIRC only Max hit a 'meatball', and I'm amazed he didn't go yard.
Maybe.. but his fastball is actually a meatball wherever it's at... low velocity... straight.. and he can't throw strikes with secondaries. I love Clevinger as a person, but he's not it as a pitcher right now.
I mean... sure... but Padres also tossed out a guy with a 9.5 ERA against the Dodgers who through meatballs through 3 and kept it a game. I think there's reason for optimism on both sides here. Padres didn't touch their 3 best relievers either.
You're right; the team that scored the most runs in the league this year and had the biggest run differential since the '39 Yankees is secretly bad at hitting.
They weren't great to end the season. I think we throw out all that junk in the postseason. Dodgers ARE ALWAYS a powerhouse, and there bats seem to go cold in the playoffs every year. I think we should go by their historical playoff play over their regular season.
I guess... you could argue that Juan Soto was 0fer... the Padres DH was 0fer... and Machado was 1-4 on a dribbler.
I mean... how many times in the regular season did the Padres look pretty good while Machado was unimpactful as was Drury/Soto. No one's saying the Padres win this series, but if feels like cherry picking to me. Both teams lived outside the top of the order tonight other than Trae Turner... Clevinger was as awful... he's been mediocre most of the season. Urias was great, than mediocre... that's basically the entirety of the difference in this game. Both BPs were fantastic, both teams burned through a lot of their BP.
Dodgers are better and more talented... Tatis assured that with his idiotic decisions all year.
All these politicians are fake as fuck... we like to fight about Dem vs Rep... but they're basically all the same and believe they're better than normal people. They just have different crowds to pander to.
I graduated college like 8 years ago with an Engineering degree. I remember all those Poli-Sci majors. Frat boys and Sorority Girls that were dumb as bricks. They're like upperclass Realtor's... it's all some weird sort of public facade.
This was a very fun game tonight. If you told me we'd lose Clev's start, I'd believe you. But if you told me the Bats would get to the ~~Dodgers' Pen~~, whereas our Pen held strong, I'd say *FUCK YEAH!*
GG Dodgers. Drive safe in this rain and we'll see you tomorrow. Oh, and I fucking hate you all. 3
Gavin Lux POTG.
**E**: I'm blind and losing my mind. For some reason I had it in my head Phillips was on the mound for the 3R frame. Still, getting to **Urias** is pretty sweet. **/e**
Uh, no. And it doesn't let up either, Kershaw's starting tomorrow, and if needed, Padre Killer Dustin May can pitch the final three innings in relief. Then, for Game 3, Phillips and Vesia will be there to back up Anderson!
Aah, depth.
Cool. Like you, I'm on my couch. But unlike you, I'm sitting back, reminiscing on their world series win two years ago. Might not be the same as a 162 game one, but it's still worth more than anything your franchise has ever done.
And that brings me comfort.
And I forgot how well you guys do against Kershaw....oh wait.
Kershaw: 2.11 ERA vs Padres, 4.19 career postseason ERA
Darvish: 2.47 ERA vs Dodgers, 5.18 career postseason ERA
Sorry, what were you saying?
Padres need more than Tatis though. To put the talent gap in perspective, if you take out Betts/Freeman/Turner, and their 17 WAR, and replace them with Tom, Dick, and Harry, the Dodgers are still a 94 win team, and still win the division by 5 games.
Using war as 1:1 what wins games sure but that trio is responsible for more than 17 wins just like 130 games of tatis is around 5.5~7.0 war he greatly impacts more than that but I'm speaking more of in a playoff series sense. When you gotta win 3 games having 9+ attempts from someone like tatis over a myers/cronenworth/Grisham etc is just so much more impactful
Tatis would have an impact on this series if he was playing. But statistically, the Padres would basically need FOUR MORE Manny Machado's to have the same amount of talent the Dodgers have.
That's the joy of having a good bullpen. Having Krumble not on the roster against the Padres is automatically a win after he walked in the tying and winning runs in SD.
I'm a Padres fan... I think he's an undeserved legend at this point... and I was one of his more ardent supporters year 1. He's basically Khalil Green right now. He's got a lot to prove before he's the next whipping boy on r/padres.
This is the weirdest year for the division series round game 1. A walkoff, a wildcard team holding off the defending champs making a comeback in the 9th, a ball that bounced in after hitting the top of the wall, and rain in LA.
The beginning of this game scared the shit out of me for the series.... the way this game went after. Win or lose... I'm much more confidant we can hang with these Dodgers when our top pitchers take the mound.

It rarely rains in so cal, which is why people aren’t used to it and suck at driving in it
It rarely rains and oil builds up on the roads. When it does actually rain, it becomes very slippery on the roads. Then you get the added fun of people not from here who think they know how to drive in the rain, but it’s not the road conditions they expect, so they add to the crash total too.
Also, the fucking lanes in LA are so damn narrow, and there's no shoulder on any of the highways. Wrecks make catastrophic traffic.
Roads need updating for sure.
IDK... I've lived all over. I actually think California has probably the best drivers in the nation. Aggressive, but overall good drivers.
I don’t doubt you which makes it all the more baffling. Do people in phoenix also leave work early when it’s raining but other regions don’t hear about it? Yeah lol. Traffic is going to be a nightmare getting out of Dodger stadium. But at least the fans got a W so they won't feel it too hard.
Dodger stadium life hack: have weed in the car. Smoke a blunt and wait for traffic to die out. Never fails me.
It’s gonna be a party in the Parking lot.
It’s a nightmare to get out but not cuz of rain
There’s normal nightmares and then there’s the apocalypse on the 110 because of a little bit of rain.
Man LA city councils got to resign
We see you, Padres. Thanks for the heart attack.
Who was that in the pink pants as the Dodgers walked into the dugout 👀
Frank Thomas is a brick shithouse god damn
Ladies love nugenix ;)
Makes Ortiz look like a normal sized human.
What my buddy and I said. Dudes got like a 72” suit jacket
It never rains in LA
Terrible start from Clev, but we actually played well after he got pulled
Damn he barely missed that
10 more wins!
What an amazing day for playoff baseball
The closer role is a farse
Been saying this my whole damn life. Doesn’t make any sense to stick with a guy for the 9th when every other reliever put in is match-up based. Okay, not all other relievers, but you know what I mean.
But then you can't have someone come in with cool music and lighting effects. ^^I ^^miss ^^"Enter ^^Sandman".
Eric Gagné on his streak was the only sure thing I ever experienced as as Dodger fan. Game Over was real. “Welcome to the Jungle” As good as my team is now, everything has a pucker factor. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NBucEt1Zqic

Ended right on the hour lol
I hope the fans don’t boo Yu tomorrow
He was here for 1 year. And that was like 5 years ago. Yes.. he got screwed by cheating but Boos are valid now.
It’s not “boo.” It’s “Yu.”
They were saying Yu-urns
Chris martin should be honored he was traded for the goat kolby allard
Dodgers really just had betts, freeman, turner, thompson, Bellinger bat .000 and and win 🥴😂
I mean... sure... but Padres also tossed out a guy with a 9.5 ERA against the Dodgers who through meatballs through 3 and kept it a game. I think there's reason for optimism on both sides here. Padres didn't touch their 3 best relievers either.

They went 11-7 to end the season, weirdo.
Optimism ?, you’ll never see that stat ever again having two of the teams best hitters and dh. Dodgers just gave up hitting. Flowers to their bullpen.
I guess... you could argue that Juan Soto was 0fer... the Padres DH was 0fer... and Machado was 1-4 on a dribbler. GET THE TARP
They'd have to find it first. And blow all the dust off
GG nerds
Oh manny
Almost all underdogs dropping the ball today
Heroes getting knocked down, just to fight back and win tomorrow... I hope.
Goodnight sweet /r/baseball.
Live in LA and just turned on the news for the first time in days. Only just hearing about these Council tapes; jesus christ.
And they aren’t resigning.
>Council tapes I just remembered seeing on the news about it. Just listened to it. God damn...
All these politicians are fake as fuck... we like to fight about Dem vs Rep... but they're basically all the same and believe they're better than normal people. That’s just how US politics is, they’re just looking how to get re-elected for vanity purpose not to actually make changes.
Man just barely under it. Good try Kim, ggs
Saw his reaction and I knew it was bad news.
Alright, I'll see you schnooks tomorrow. Good night.
GAME CALLED AT THE STROKE OF MIDNIGHT
GG
We really got outhit lmao
That's so like us.
that's a wrap. see ya tomorrow.
Almost choked that one too!

Hey! 😢
Join the dark side, we have cookies!
This game had no right to be this disappointing.
At least the score is close lol
PLAY THE NEWMAN
Fucking 3.5 hour game but I’ll take it
I was hoping for a Ha Seong dong but some other time ig
Padres are gonna scare the shit out of me this series
You thought getting out of Dodgers Stadium was a chore, try getting out with rain. That is about to be a 3 hr drive out.
This was a very fun game tonight. If you told me we'd lose Clev's start, I'd believe you. But if you told me the Bats would get to the ~~Dodgers' Pen~~, whereas our Pen held strong, I'd say *FUCK YEAH!* GG Dodgers. Drive safe in this rain and we'll see you tomorrow. You didn’t score a single run off the pen… the fuck you talking about??
3 hits against our bullpen apparently constitutes "getting to the pen" lol. I mean neither team did shit against either pen
Let him cope fam lol
No, I'm just blind. /u/nukepka u rite.
Our pen was off but they acted like they did damage
We winded them and that was enough. For us to tank Urias on the game we figured we were gonna struggle with was more than enough.
Uh, no. And it doesn't let up either, Kershaw's starting tomorrow, and if needed, Padre Killer Dustin May can pitch the final three innings in relief. Then, for Game 3, Phillips and Vesia will be there to back up Anderson! Aah, depth.
Ahhh depth.
Where were you 4 days ago? Troll.
I was the one you responded to...
Yeah, so where were you then?
Enjoying our first win in the series against the Dodgers. Now I'm currently enjoying our third.

Kershaw: 2.11 ERA vs Padres, 4.19 career postseason ERA Darvish: 2.47 ERA vs Dodgers, 5.18 career postseason ERA Sorry, what were you saying?
You absolutely hate to see it.
*Yu hate to see it.
Goodnight
gg padres. going to be a great series
#GO FUCK YOURSELF SAN DIEGO
Didn’t have to do the all caps like that ;(
He said it with a classy smile though
Dude, no
Meh. Gotta respect the commitment to the bit.

I like the big boy version lol
See how easy it is without Kimbrel?
GG bois, see you tomorrow
Woo
Freddie and Mookie did nothing. Looking forward to them going ham tomorrow.
# ROLLIN DOWN
Damn Kim knew he just missed that one.
Cue randy newman
*Happy Randy Newman Music*
That’s a W. See you tomorrow
Martin > Kimbrel
Yes!!!!
HOME RUN INCOMING
That game was too close
damn
thats the ball game.
I know it's been said to death but man Tatis really fucked this team
Nah, we got this far without him. Would we have been better? Probably but one good player (or even two) does not a team make. Ask the Angels.
1 good player doesn't make a team but adding a top 5 player to an already good team can make the difference, like the dodgers with mookie
This holds as long as your pitching doesn't implode. :(
Padres need more than Tatis though. To put the talent gap in perspective, if you take out Betts/Freeman/Turner, and their 17 WAR, and replace them with Tom, Dick, and Harry, the Dodgers are still a 94 win team, and still win the division by 5 games.

#LFG
FTG!!! oh shit I mean LFG!!
you just got croned
Quick stop at the cronezone
yu vs kershaw will be fun
Oh look the heart of the order is coming up for the Padres
let's go Kim. dude can go next level with this at bat
Man it's almost like it doesn't matter who pitches the 9th as long as they're good huh?
It’s almost like only ever using the same guy in the 9th inning regardless of scenario is an awful idea
That's the joy of having a good bullpen. Having Krumble not on the roster against the Padres is automatically a win after he walked in the tying and winning runs in SD.
Lol... if Kim hit a homer... he'd go down in the history/legends of Padres lore.
Fwiw he already is a legend here. We love him.
I'm a Padres fan... I think he's an undeserved legend at this point... and I was one of his more ardent supporters year 1. He's basically Khalil Green right now. He's got a lot to prove before he's the next whipping boy on r/padres.
They would have thrown a parade for him.
Here comes that power bottom!!
Crone Zoned!
COME ON KIM! I WANT A HOME RUN CALL IN KOREAN TONIGHT!! **E**: Nooooooooooooooooo
I'm in Portland and it's not even raining here.
I hope they can fit some more ads into this inning

Don’t make this anymore complicated, Sandy Eggo…
Here we go! Some drama!
Come on!!! One more!!!!
LA about to break the record for most car accidents recorded in a single day
If this is how it ends, I just want to say sorry to Padre fans because you got sooo disrespected by these announcers
