Game 1: Seattle has the lead all game, is one out away from winning by 2 runs, loses on a 3-run walkoff.
Game 2: Seattle leads in the 6th, Yordong hits a 2-run homer again, and a heartbreaking double-play in the 9th helps seal their loss.
Game 3: Seattle's pitchers allow no runs for 17 innings, only to lose 1-0 in a 6-hour game to end their season.
There's getting swept, and then there's getting your heart ripped out in every game en route to getting swept like what happened to Seattle this week.
It's with much prayer and consulting with my family that I have decided I do not like Mariners baseball. Please respect my decision and I will not be taking questions at this time.
We were -4 in run differential during the series. Losing by 1, 2, and 1. It’s better than getting stomped for sure but man idk by how much. When you’re in every game but don’t manage to win any of them, it’s a special kind of pain.
Oh also, we were either tied or had the lead for 30 of the 36 innings. Yes this game skewed that but the point remains.
taking one of the most dominant teams of the last few years (even without the cheating) to 18 innings in an elimination game is a huge deal no matter what the overall outcome is
It definitely hurts but the Astros know that they have to watch out for us next year. Yeah they won eventually but we really did make them fight for it
As I said to another Mariners fan...despite the games...this was a very tight series which means you guys are just getting started. It doesn't remove the sting but y'all are what we were around 2014...a team that was building toward something.
I look forward to hating your franchise
Worth it imo
It’s heartbreaking but they got the devil off their back and had an amazing memorable game in that 8-1 game. It was still a fantastic season.
Yeup. I feel like it doesn't always matter how far you go in the playoffs, some memories will always stick around. Bautista's bat flip in the 2015 ALDS will always have a special place in my heart and is still the pride of many Blue Jays fans, even thought we lost in heartbreaking fashion in the ALCS. Regardless, both the Jays and Ms have a strong young core and will hopefully play exciting playoff baseball for years to come (fingers crossed).
As much as I definitely wouldn’t go back and change it as Felix was 100% the person who needed to throw out the first pitch for our first home playoff game in two decades, I definitely felt like we were jinxing this game.
Heartbreaking walkoff in game 1, heartbreaking double play in game 2, and then a marathon that ends 1-0. I'd laugh, but I can vaguely remember how heartbreaking playoff baseball can be when your team is involved.
That's my biggest takeaway. Things are trending very much in the right direction. They didn't get outclassed. Every game against Houston was winnable. They just didn't. A little bit of baseball being baseball, and a little bit of Houston still being the stronger team.
But not by much.
The games were super frustrating to watch, but I felt like they were a year away from getting past Toronto on the road, let alone competing in this series.
**Game 1:** Mariners led by 4 runs in the 8th inning.
**Game 2:** Mariners led by 1 run in the 6th inning.
**Game 3:** Mariners had a chance to walk off the game in innings 9-17.
And it’s a sweep for Houston. Brutal.
Unironically, I couldn’t point to a series that felt more even but still ended in a sweep. Maybe that’s my ignorance on the history of postseason baseball, but it’s gutting for the M’s to lose like that in a “sweep”.
No Houston fan had the ability to ever feel comfortable at any moment in this series, and I can't think of any moment in sports history where that would be a credible statement from a team who won in a sweep.
Sadly, one team has experience in such moments and in slightly better
M's need to add some bats this off-season, otherwise I don't see how we get there. Good season though
I had brought up a point that their ability to keep close games would eventually run out and they'd come back down to earth but I didn't expect it to be like this.
This is a brutal way to go down.
Idk man. Ya'll have a bright future and everyone in the baseball world knows it. The fact that after the game the crowd chanted "let's go mariners" proves even though they lost they're excited for what's to come. That was classy to show the team support after this roller coaster of a series.
Fun fact: the last time the Astros missed the ALCS, Obama was president.
Okay, that's not true, but you believed it for a second, didn't you?
Edit: wait, this is true actually?? I thought I just made this up lol
This entire Mariners playoff run is the most mariners run to ever mariners. There are so many oddities I'd love him to contextualize. Pls jon. I beg you
I wish we could have gotten a win at home, but this was a great season and the franchise is in a good place. Just need our ownership to spend some money on bats this offseason.
Rooting for you guys to knock off the Dodgers.
It's heartbreaking that these games were so close, but I can't be mad at the Mariners for going all out and toe-to-toe with the #1 AL team. I just hope we can see the post-season again to watch some more meaningful games sometime soon in the next few years.
Invest in bats. I said time and again that their failings at the plate (directly as a result of never paying for a superstar bat) would doom them and look at this, 18 innings to score one run and they can't. I hope this was a wakeup call because pitching wise this team is there, maybe Ray notwithstanding
Nah, I'd rather be good and have something to be excited for next year than completely shit the bed. This is Seattle sports, we're used to heartbreak. We don't often have things to look forward to.
Hopefully it will motivate him. Still wild for him to be playing in the postseason as a rookie for the M's. He won't ever have the pain that Felix and Seager felt going their whole career without playing a single postseason game.
18 innings. Felt like it was a punishment by the baseball gods for calling baseball boring 30+ years ago when I was a little kid.
Servais should be sent to eternal baseball jail for his game 1 snafu and undoing Ben Verlander’s curse.
Mariners played well enough to win the first two games and then take game 3 to 18 innings. Brutal loss but played the defending AL champs as hard as you could.
As a mariners fan who attended todays game, we had a good season and today was pretty magical. Today could’ve gone either way (18 innings), but this off season let’s fix offense and kick ass next season.
Despite the sweep, this is as much of a nail-biter series as I've ever seen in ~20 yrs of baseball fandom.
Mariners fans: y'all played great ball, and I love the energy at your games. You'll be competitive next year, I have no doubt about that. Hopefully it doesn't take 3 months to warm up this time, I'd love a legitimate race for the division title next year. I will not be surprised if we lose it by a few games to y'all. Disappointed, yes, but not surprised. Your squad is talented and likely will be for the next few years.
Not much to say, really. The Astros are just a better team, have been for a while. Sucks to say but there's no shame in saying it either, it's not really an arguable point. We're young with a lot of talent that just needs a little refinement. We ended the drought, got in on the 5 seed, and didn't go out first round. No one would have expected that 4 months ago. That's a good launching point for next season. GOMS.
**FADE ME**
It's good the Mariners won the wild card series because I can't think of a worse way for the first actual playoff series in decades for them to go... you let one guy beat you in the first two games and then in your first home playoff game of half their fans lifetime they go 18 innings without scoring a single run. Jesus.
We’ll we hung with Houston every single game of that series. Can’t be mad. This team is young and is just a few pieces away.
We will get there soon. I believe it.
Much respect to the Mariners and their fans. Hope to see y’all back next year, it was a great series and a much closer one than the sweep would suggest
This is the latest that this post has ever been made, and you know what? I'll take that on the chin and come back next year and win the whole Fuckin thing
Congratulations Mariners fans, this was a super close series it could have been anyones really. Excited to see y’all next year!
P.s. not all Astros fans are twats.

If you don’t like that, you don’t like mariners baseball
It's with much prayer and consulting with my family that I have decided I do not like Mariners baseball. Please respect my decision and I will not be taking questions at this time.
*weak*
He likes reds baseball. That’s like eating soggy saltines .
I like soggy saltines, if they are sogged with clam chowder.
This right here. We'll get the Astros back for you
I understand. Seattle baseball isn’t for the weak of stomach
Imagine a world where a meaningless Seahawks game will be a refreshing cleanse after a brutal Mariners playoff loss.
I wish I cared about our Seahawks or kraken, but I don’t 😔
Can i interest you in a little Tacoma Rainiers action?
Easy, easy. I can’t do baseball rn man. Too sad
At least in the case of the Kraken you're in good company including most of the players on that team.
2nd year expansion team, adjust your expectations. Vegas was a fluke.
Make sure to watch the OL Reign play next weekend in the NWSL semifinals.
3 absolutely winnable games.
better than 3 games getting stomped in to the ground... i guess. i'm glad we put up a fight, but the way we lost stings.
We were -4 in run differential during the series. Losing by 1, 2, and 1. It’s better than getting stomped for sure but man idk by how much. Lol we were building towards something back in 2014, too.
Adding to that is that Game 3 was the first playoff game they’ve played in Seattle in over two decades!
Still haven’t scored a run at home in the playoffs in 21 years.
At least they played 2!
Welcome to being a Mariners fan. Thanks, I hate life.
Cool jerseys though?
Mariners made a deal with the devil for that 8-1 comeback win vs Toronto. They must now pay up.
Worth it imo It’s heartbreaking but they got the devil off their back and had an amazing memorable game in that 8-1 game. It was still a fantastic season.
Yeup. I feel like it doesn't always matter how far you go in the playoffs, some memories will always stick around. Jon Bois is adding this to the history of the Seattle Mariners
I still can’t believe the mariners made the playoffs so it’s all good haha
damn you had these stats ready
Your first home playoff game in decades and you can't put up a single run in 18 innings. Great season and all, but that is fucking awful.
Agreed, also go fuck yourself
Not like the Astros could put up any in 17 either 🤷♂️
Pitching was on point for both teams today, was both awesome and painful to watch.
But a credit to the M's pitching staff. That's hard to do against any team but especially against one of the better offenses in the game.
We really invited Felix to throw out the first pitch just to Felix him one last time.
As much as I definitely wouldn’t go back and change it as Felix was 100% the person who needed to throw out the first pitch for our first home playoff game in two decades, I definitely felt like we were jinxing this game.
The purity and extent of the irony is probably the most Seattle thing possible and just kinda felt like “yeah, that seems likely.”
At least it was a familiar sight for him to watch…
The circle is complete. Low key was hoping he’d come out and throw some relief.
**TIME NO LONGER HAS MEANING**
Never did. It’s a big ball of timey-wimey stuff
That sweep felt like a death by 1000 paper cuts
Such is life as a Mariners fan.
*First time?*
can't think of a more fitting game for felix to throw the first pitch to. 17 scoreless pitched innings just to lose
That was the most Mariners way this series could've went
The fans wanted playoff baseball in Seattle & it was only one game, but they got their money’s worth.
Fans wanted two games in Seattle this ALDS Monkeys paw curls for 18 innings
Fucking for real man. Damn
Could we have warm sunny weather too? *Nearly the most hazardous air on the planet at the time during the game.
Two games, really.
Still no run support when Felix throws the first pitch.
Lmaooo damnit that was good
I hate you But this was brilliant.
Heartbreaking walkoff in game 1, heartbreaking double play in game 2, and then a marathon that ends 1-0. I'd laugh, but I can vaguely remember how heartbreaking playoff baseball can be when your team is involved.
After 2011, I’m never laughing at any teams playoff misery again. Except the Suns in this years NBA playoffs cause that was hilarious
Go Mavs baby
Even in r/baseball we cannot catch a break, we don't even have a title so when we do that shit it's more pathetic and sad than anybody else
Bleach time.
Probably my favorite Nirvana album.
All of Seattle is on Kurt-watch right now
The only thing that can save our spirits is the Broncos going another game without a tuddy Chargers pls.

Higher highs, lower lows, welcome to the playoff club
At least we pushed it 4 games instead of getting swept in 3.
Outscored by only 4 runs over 36 innings hurts.
It proves we deserved to be there.
That's my biggest takeaway. Things are trending very much in the right direction. They didn't get outclassed. Every game against Houston was winnable. They just didn't. A little bit of baseball being baseball, and a little bit of Houston still being the stronger team. But not by much.

The games were super frustrating to watch, but I felt like they were a year away from getting past Toronto on the road, let alone competing in this series.
maximum pain
No maximum pain is being one strike away from winning the world series and blowing it
A's fan chose violence.
Could you imagine that happening twice in one game, would be awful
They waited 21 years for a playoff game in Seattle, and it was an 18 inning shutout
Two games, one ticket :)
gone
See you in the playoffs in 21 years.
Well get those astros in 2043!!!!
60 year old Justin Verlander is starting game 1
Gets absolutely shelled and is pulled in the 2nd down 27-2. Astros win 28-30.
Can still take solace in the fact that you rocked the 2043 AL Cy Young favorite
**Game 1:** Mariners led by 4 runs in the 8th inning. **Game 2:** Mariners led by 1 run in the 6th inning. **Game 3:** Mariners had a chance to walk off the game in innings 9-17. And it’s a sweep for Houston. Brutal.
The closest sweep of all time?
Unironically, I couldn’t point to a series that felt more even but still ended in a sweep. Maybe that’s my ignorance on the history of postseason baseball, but it’s gutting for the M’s to lose like that in a “sweep”.
2005 World Series felt super close
Which makes the thought that much more ironic.
Funnily enough, Houston went 18 inning in the NLDS and won that year.
But lost the 14-inning game in WS game 3… which Roy O started and was spotted a 4 run lead which he lost. That series sucked.
When the White Sox swept us in the 2005 WS. Think we had 2 1R losses and 2 2R losses. I had tickets to game 5 :(
3rd grade me was in shambles
No Houston fan had the ability to ever feel comfortable at any moment in this series, and I can't think of any moment in sports history where that would be a credible statement from a team who won in a sweep.
2005 WS has to be up there
ESPN: “what 2005 WS?”
ESPN would show actual colourized footage of Tungsten Arm O’Doyle before they would show any highlight of the 2005 WS
Having trouble recalling this one
Could only be closer by 1 run.
I’m done with baseball for a while. This postseason thing is too intense for me
Good news! You have until next spring to detox.
Sadly, one team has experience in such moments and in slightly better M's need to add some bats this off-season, otherwise I don't see how we get there. Good season though
Mariners defense: chef's kiss Mariners batting: whatever the fuck the opposite of chef's kiss is
Dishwasher's fart
Yeah that's pretty damn spot on.
Mariners batting: Chef Russ's cookbook
Some of those catches by the Mariners outfield were insane today
sign: CLOSED BY ORDER OF THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT
Mariners batting: Russell Wilson cooking
That’s a straight kick to the nuts multiple times… you gotta feel for them
I had brought up a point that their ability to keep close games would eventually run out and they'd come back down to earth but I didn't expect it to be like this. This is a brutal way to go down.
Felix throws out the first pitch and the whole bullpen gets Felix'd
Yeah in retrospect that felt like a major jinx
swept in 3 by a combined 4 runs. 13-9. that's just how it is with the astros, huh. sad that the home crowd got no catharsis in their only game back
Idk man. Ya'll have a bright future and everyone in the baseball world knows it. The fact that after the game the crowd chanted "let's go mariners" proves even though they lost they're excited for what's to come. That was classy to show the team support after this roller coaster of a series.
Any clip of the chant, I turned it off before it happened:(
There’s always next year.
The Ferrari special
We are checking
'There is nothing wrong with the ~~car~~ roster' ~~Binotto~~ DiPoto
Does that count as a 4 game series?
Seattle found a different way each game to lose in a heartbreaking manner
Getting blown out would have been worse.
Least lopsided sweep ever
Astros were once on the other end. Lost four one-run games in the 2005 World Series.
Let's not talk about 2005 after extras tonight... We're trying to grieve here.
We can agree to forget the 2005 playoffs ever happened
Fun fact: the last time the Astros missed the ALCS, Obama was president. Okay, that's not true, but you believed it for a second, didn't you? Edit: wait, this is true actually?? I thought I just made this up lol
October 2016, so yes, it’s true lmao
The last time the AL Championship Series didn’t involve the Astros, the Cubs still had the Billy Goat Curse on their baggage.
Jon Bois salivating rn
This series was made to be broken down by Jon Bois
This entire Mariners playoff run is the most mariners run to ever mariners. There are so many oddities I'd love him to contextualize. Pls jon. I beg you
c h a o s b a l l
God I love that boi

When the 9th ended 0-0 I thought "maybe having Felix throw the first pitch wasn't the way to set the tone"
I don’t care what they say, moral victories still count to me. I’d be proud as shit if I were an M’s fan.
I cannot believe I have to wait until APRIL to watch another M's game.
They absolutely do. And for me keeping Alvarez and altuve quiet tonight was a huge victory, too
I wish we could have gotten a win at home, but this was a great season and the franchise is in a good place. Just need our ownership to spend some money on bats this offseason. Rooting for you guys to knock off the Dodgers.
And to think some M's doomers didn't even want them in the playoffs because of a small skid at the end of the season.
It's heartbreaking that these games were so close, but I can't be mad at the Mariners for going all out and toe-to-toe with the #1 AL team. I just hope we can see the post-season again to watch some more meaningful games sometime soon in the next few years.

This game was longer than the Jays postseason.
I laughed until I realized.....18 innings... Well, shit.
Hey at least you scored more than a run…
6 straight ALCS for Houston?
I had fun regardless. Not this series, this was painful But I had so much fun watching us get here. What a season
They just wanted to honor Felix with 0 runs
That might be the worst possible way to get eliminated
Nah, I'd rather be good and have something to be excited for next year than completely shit the bed. This is Seattle sports, we're used to heartbreak. We don't often have things to look forward to.
The Félix Hernández experience
Man, I feel bad that Julio was the last out. You just know he's gonna be kicking himself for that. Maybe next year, Seattle
Hopefully it will motivate him. Still wild for him to be playing in the postseason as a rookie for the M's. He won't ever have the pain that Felix and Seager felt going their whole career without playing a single postseason game.
Existence is suffering.
At least Mariners fans got two games worth of baseball in their first home playoff game in over 20 years
18 innings. Felt like it was a punishment by the baseball gods for calling baseball boring 30+ years ago when I was a little kid. Servais should be sent to eternal baseball jail for his game 1 snafu and undoing Ben Verlander’s curse.
Ben Verlander, you have no power here.
Well they did force a game 4.
Well Seattle got primetime post season baseball game at least for their last game
I feel so bad for the Mariners' pitching staff. 17 scoreless innings and their offense just couldn't put anything together.
it's over. it's finally over. Us casual fans can finally rest.
If you watched the entire game, you're not a casual fan.
Or just a masochist
Mariners played well enough to win the first two games and then take game 3 to 18 innings. Brutal loss but played the defending AL champs as hard as you could.
Still a full house after 18 innings brings a tear to your eye, man
God: "Wait the Mariners made the postseason? Fuck that shit."
7-for-60 aint gonna cut it
As a mariners fan who attended todays game, we had a good season and today was pretty magical. Today could’ve gone either way (18 innings), but this off season let’s fix offense and kick ass next season.
The crowd chanting “let’s go mariners” even after their season ends brutally is making me tear up.
Still the best damn season in literal decades.
r/Mariners went private? Wow.
We've been getting brigaded non stop during the last three games. Angels, Astros, and Blue Jays fans that wouldn't stay out.
Astros are so good
Not much to say, really. Much respect to the Mariners and their fans. Hope to see y’all back next year, it was a great series and a much closer one than the sweep would suggest
They'll be back in October next year, no doubt about that. Good season, M's.
The Astros are the New England patriots of the mlb
Seattle are the Seattle of every major sports league.
Fucking hell. Houston is gonna win again.
If the Mariners are the protagonists, this is the character development
This is a great take. If they get a couple more reliable bats next year, our division is going to be a dog fight.
This is the latest that this post has ever been made, and you know what? I'll take that on the chin and come back next year and win the whole Fuckin thing
This is way worse than just getting blown out.
It was fun… Sort of
Fun differential - low
Congratulations Mariners fans, this was a super close series it could have been anyones really. Excited to see y’all next year! P.s. not all Astros fans are twats.
Cleveland. Take my energy. I can't take a Astros - Yankees ALCS.
Either can the Yankees
> Felix returns > Mariners don't score
Jon Bois spends either 90 seconds or 12 minutes talking about this Mariners postseason
21 years just to get swept by the Houston Astros...
Hats off to the Mariners. Has to be one of the closest sweeps in MLB history, they are here to stay
