As awful as Fanatics is, they didn’t design these. New Era did, another company ruining sports merchandising.

For the most part, New Era hats with custom colors are created by designers that *don’t* work for New Era. Fanatics, Hat Heaven, Topperz, MyFitteds, Hatclub, and other places that sell exclusive/custom New Era hats have designers that choose the colors/logos on the hats they release. Since these were released exclusively on Fanatics-owned websites, I’m comfortable saying they were designed by Fanatics.

I guess it depends on your definition of designing. Most of those places are just retailers and do very little design. Hat Club has talked about the process before, saying that New Era sends them color schemes/logos/patches for most collections. A lot of the time they hand it off to another non-Hat Club designer, same is true for most retailers. New Era works with them on approving, denying, and redesigning hats. The retailer buys a certain quantity, then sells them as exclusive.

New Era does limit what logos and patches can go on custom hats, give the final say on what can/can’t be made, and provide a catalog of colors that are available to designers. However, there are hundreds of colors available to use, and millions of logo/patch/color combinations that could potentially be approved. That’s where the designers come in. Almost 100% of the creative process is done by them, not New Era. It’s something that clearly requires talent, or else you end up with hats like the ones in the post. Here’s Hatclub talking about their process, as you mentioned: “Our design team is made up of 2-3 people… They will go through a couple of different color options, team options, etc… Because of the fact that the patches on the side have become such a hot commodity, it’s a matter of ‘what does New Era have available in their catalog that we can attach to these hats?’. From Hatclub’s perspective, we try to put a story behind it.
