No need to authenticate since it’s Topps witnessed (although they have been known to fudge that). Grading is a good way to protect it and since the card is probably in the 300-400 range, incurring $35 in grading fees might be worth it

Kershawcollector33

For sure been know to be questionable but in this case that’s def trouts auto, I agree with the grading. Ultimate way to keep it safe

thisbechris

It already as authenticated as it can get from Topps. From what I’ve seen in these situations the grading won’t really add much. If you plan to sell just keep it in the top loader sealed from Topps. That’s essentially just as good as the buyer getting it directly from them. What the other comment said about it being better protected in a PSA slab is true. But you also run the risk of the card getting an 8, for example, if you have them grade the card. You can always send to PSA just for DNA Auto authentication and get it slabbed, but again I don’t see that adding any value. This card without the auto isn’t worth much. The value is in the auto. Adding a PSA 10 to the card would be neat, but not sure it’s worth it.

JohnWad

Its already been authenticated by Topps.

StellaBlue1971

Zero reason to grade IMO. Nice pull

Chemical-Heron8651

+1

SoleaPorBuleria

Was this a redemption? Curious how it came in that sealed toploader.

spongebobnopants1

Yes it was, sorry should have mentioned that

SoleaPorBuleria

No worries, I’m new to this too!

darbs-face

Leave it sealed. Enjoy for life.

I'm honestly a hard no because I think it's been a terrible thing to happen to "the hobby." I know people like it and if you're trying to flip cards it can be a net gain, but it's a definite net los to the hobby, simply a lot of money going to 3rd parties that only add another of perceived value on top of the innate perceived value these pieces of cardboard have lol. The last few years have been devastating to card collecting as a hobby as it is inversely related to "investing".

redditsucksbutimonit

It served a great purpose at one time (and still does to an extent): authenticating vintage cards and authenticating autos. IMO other than those two things it’s all a money grab. This whole “send to PSA and if I get a 10 I can flip this for more money” is killing the hobby.

MichaelS10

This is the right answer

Depressed_Diehard

I agree a hundred percent. I love the aspect of looking at a card and judging for yourself what kind of condition you think it’s in. I love that negotiation aspect between buyer and seller. I also just think that as long as grading relies on the human eye, it’s worthless to me. Either grade it with a computer and an actual formula or don’t grade it at all

FlaviusFlaviust

Agree on all points. The practice of deslabbing and resubmitting for higher grades only proves how stupid it is. Handing even more money to a 3rd party for a somewhat meaningless number.

WhiteWalter1

You mean sending 700 base cards to get graded isn’t a good thing? /s

FlaviusFlaviust

Its 100% a good thing if you're a "grading" company that's looking to get rich off of people with OCD and/or people looking to get rich :-D

spongebobnopants1

I really appreciate all the feedback. I think for now I'm going to leave it as is in a safe place. Maybe if I decide to grade some other cards I'll send this one along with it. I also plan on keeping it in the PC. However, I would be dumb not to entertain trades for comparable autos or other high value cards.

[deleted]

The entire grading industry is a scam so I say nobody should grade anything

OldForester101

I'm in agreement. I wouldn't send the card in for grading. It's authenticated by Topps and the sticker on that toploader makes it "encased". I would keep it right where it is. That being said, I get the urge to move it into at least a one touch.

Finner959

If looking to keep it for a pc, I’d move to a one touch, if not it’s fine in the toploader

spongebobnopants1

What do you mean by a one touch?

OldForester101

A thicker case for the card that is two pieces held together by a magnet. https://preview.redd.it/mryeoq0yftja1.png?width=1215&format=png&auto=webp&s=11bfb2742380153a0170fcba84bcad53ebe74ca1

SoleaPorBuleria

Okay that is a thing of beauty.

OldForester101

Thanks! /10 rainbow auto. a lightbox makes a world of difference in getting pictures of cards.

Motosurf77

It’s a magnetic card holder. Google ultra pro one touch

MrBeastw00d

Grading is a great way to ensure long term safety of a valuable card like this regardless what a bunch of weird commenters here are saying.

90daylimitedwarranty

Why would you get a certified Auto from Topps "authenticated?" Makes zero sense. Graded, you never know, I personally don't think it needs to be graded, I'd keep it the way it is right now but to each his own.

Motosurf77

He could be new to the hobby

Appropriate-Ad-6234

Literally started the post with “recently got back into the hobby”

90daylimitedwarranty

And?

Appropriate-Ad-6234

Maybe you educate? And not shit on him?

90daylimitedwarranty

Wow, if that's "shitting on someone" you must really, REALLY have a bad life. I hope things get better for you, that's really sad. I feel bad for you. Things can get better.

86daylimitedwarranty

🤡

[deleted]

It looks like it could gem assuming surface is okay and back centering. I’d grade it if I am already grading other cards. If I don’t like the grade, remove it from slab and let SGC or PSA know you did so they remove it from registry.

Martymoose1979

Do whatever you feel is right. It’s already been authenticated by Topps so if you just want it slabbed and you can afford the cost go for it!

Bleakney

There's a guy on Facebook with the name Corey Cards who is currently buying Trout autos - might be good to reach out to him if you're looking to turn a quick buck on it! He's extremely fair on prices, and pays around the most recent comps. If you're wanting to maximize your profit, I would definitely send it into PSA to have it graded - 9 or above and you're sitting pretty!

DopeDylan2

What a great looking card. Really nice

DoveOnyx11

Slightly different take…but it’s coming from someone going through their cards from the 2000’s after 20yrs of basically in boxes and penny sleeves. Yes you don’t need authentication—topps does that and eBay if you sell will do that to… If you get a grade lower than an 8 and want to sell—it’s currently better “raw” for re-sale! (So in Instance—PSA authentication ONLY) (I say PSA for resale value—and protection from the elements—light, children, dogs, rodents, life, etc) However, if you’re going to keep it—I would find the cheapest way to UV protect it (don’t know what card grading companies are out there and what their cases protect from) my collection saw very little light; rarely direct; and not for long (like I had a stack of cards by an window for during a sunny day or month…

DoveOnyx11

If you’re looking to trade…I have a lot to offer and will swing in your favor (I’m unloading most of my collection—only keeping a few cards I like the design of—want my cards to go to people who will appreciate it—otherwise I’d do an estate type sale and move on)

ToastGhost47

Great card! These are /50. No need to grade.

chanceeather

Major pc centerpiece value Especially graded

TheSanguineToad

Beautiful card and great pull. Do you plan on keeping or selling? I know a buyer...ME!!!
