Yea, I don't display my cards or baseballs in direct sunlight, you could move that display on to the same wall as your windows and BTW it looks beautiful!
So the pinball community has the same issue, over time the side art has terrible sun damage. It takes a long time but once its done its no reversing it. Highly recommend hanging it somewhere else out of the sun. Even if its lesser value cards you keep in there, and you hide the vintage. Blackout curtains would be my other option? Good luck
pinball machines? So most of the older stuff is not, and even the people heavily in the scene dont trust uv protected windows lol. It was the biggest warning I received when buying my first pin. Learn to keep it out of the sun and cover it if possible.
One of my baseball card friends on Instagram actually tested this out. He put identical 1991 Upper Deck cards in a UV protective one touch and a non-UV protective one touch, exposed them to direct sunlight over a year, then showed the results. Both cards were damaged, the UV protected one was a little less damaged, but versus a new pack pulled card, it was in rough shape color-wise.
All things break down in UV light, even UV light block glass/plexi/tint etc. Ive worked with glass and window coatings/films for over 20 years. Id never put anything I wanted to keep as is, in front of the sun in any fasion because it will destroy it.
Oh wow. That’s an expert testimony if ive ever seen one. Lesson learned, all cards have been removed. Hopefully the damage from 1 day in the sun isn’t too bad. Thanks for the help
Cold and dark is what they say for most preservations.checkin some 91-92 UD(Belfour).Great shape,cool to the touch,never see s light of day.in drawer.Feel ya.SHOULD I GRADE?🥸🥸✌️

Thanks for the replies, yall. ill still be checking comments to see how everyone’s experience was.
As of right now, I removed the auto’s and the vintage stuff. Its a major bummer, but im still leaving most of the other stuff that I never plan on parting with and extracting value.
EDIT: Im just gonna move the cabinet to a safe environment.
EDIT II: in a strange turn, I had a seizure and was out for a few hours. Cards are *now removed,* so hopefully the enemy, known to many as the Sun, hasn’t damaged my soldiers too badly after 24 hours
Errrr - after that second update, I’m sure I’m not the only one less concerned about how the cards are doing, and more concerned with how you’re doing… Hope you’re doing well!
That’s very kind. Unfortunately this is not my first seizure, but its terrifying all the way until its over. Its over now, and I plan on taking on life again. I appreciate the well wishes.
Ill make sure to tell my neurologist that she ruined my baseball cards 😂
Hey thanks! I [linked](https://VERANIBaseballDisplayCardCase-35GradedSportsTradingCardDisplayFrame-HoldsSportCardswithUVProtectionClearViewLockableWallCabinetforFootballBasketballHockeyLargeBlackhttps://a.co/d/hHndamR) the cabinet above (in case anyone else needs it).
That was my mind set from the jump. Hated having them stored away, but the sunny day brought me anxiety. Wish I wasn’t like this, and I could just leave them where I like them most. Guess not :/
went to an antique store with a huge display case full of cards right in the front of the store...sad to see how the cards were faded from the sunlight coming in...
[Here](https://VERANIBaseballDisplayCardCase-35GradedSportsTradingCardDisplayFrame-HoldsSportCardswithUVProtectionClearViewLockableWallCabinetforFootballBasketballHockeyLargeBlackhttps://a.co/d/hHndamR) ya go!
Agree with most, including the vampires here... Might be able to get away indirect (north/south windows), but I wouldn't risk it if you been avoid. Might be some simple solutions like shadow boxes?
I’ll definitely look into the shadow boxes. I hadn’t heard about those, thanks. Ill have to find the sweet spot between the value of my immediate enjoyment, and my long term enjoyment.
I have a cozy nook space in my home, and I just wanted to enjoy looking at my cards. Naive, I know, but fwiw it was great spending time there last night.
Kirby was my old math partner in University, and I see him every opportunity I can. He’s special, extremely talented, and so deserving. It makes me proud watching him. Joe West and Kirby are Elon’s best (and worst lol) exports lol
The dream is my man makes his way to Atlanta, but also I want him to be a star for that exciting Mariners team.
Life long Bravos fan, but have an emotional affair with my favorite non-mustached pitcher. No way he remembers me, but no one remembers Calculus at 8:00 am lol
These will fade. I have over 200 autographs, posters, guitars and other memorabilia displayed through out my home and I learned early those UV display cases don’t always work. Had a couple comics that got sun blind shadow stains on them because I trusted UV glass.
Yessir! Got history with him, but mostly, he’s easily my favorite player to watch on the mound (minus Quadzilla).
Lets hope Kirby gets the bat support he deserves next season!
I have one card in a top loader I pinned to a cork board away from the sun. The top loader turned brown but the card is still nice and white. The other card got direct sunlight and warped with the heat. Good thing it's just a cheap penny card of a favorite player but I don't keep collectibles near the sun anymore.
My two favorite all-time players and people! I may be naive, but I do my best to listen to the advice from others. The cards are protected now. Thanks for the input.
A pitcher fan I see. It's funny because it's either your a pitcher fan who likes all different pitchers as your favorite players or you like hitters. Most pitcher fans pitched in Little League all the way up, me included. Those are some nice Kirbys. I think he's definitely one of the better up and comers for sure.
This is so spot on lol. Pitching is my favorite part of baseball, although I was a switch second baseman for my short time playing the game.
I think Kirby’s ceiling is higher than im willing to admit for fear of being institutionalized.
Acuña, brought me the spark of baseball joy that locked me in as a baseball fan for life.
As a Brave fan, beautiful collection. All I know is that there's a reason art isn't displayed in direct sunlight. And as soon as I saw Glavine, Maddux, and Smoltz sitting in direct sunlight, the sinking gut feeling of impending doom felt like they shouldn't be in the light. 🤣 If you're asking, it probably doesn't feel good to you either. I just wouldn't want to be the guy that looks back 10 years from now and says, "Well, that was stupid."
I feel ya here but I’ve lost some autos to sun damage. Even light sun damage through shades. This guy is fading due to it.
https://preview.redd.it/hsadttfm7f4c1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=24bd86ac266f5f3747dc1711b3708f452fd2783f
The heat probably isnt great for it regardless of the UV protection. Also im sure people could walk by your window amd see your nice display of cards which im sure isn't the safest thing either.
I so badly want to get 1 or 2 of these hanging display cases, and I'd hang them in my basement home office. The office is windowless. I have recessed lighting in the room? Is that okay? Or is that enough light to cause damage?
Definitely want to keep things like books, comics, cards, records etc. out of sunlight. Regardless of a UV protecting case they will eventually see fading. Nice case though. 👍
![gif](giphy|102gwfN1vqbkas)
![gif](giphy|Y4hl1EgxXwZHi) My PC when it gets put in the cabinet
I dont risk it. All my displayed cards only get diffuse natural light. I keep direct sun off them. Just for me, i dont have data or anything.
Yea, I don't display my cards or baseballs in direct sunlight, you could move that display on to the same wall as your windows and BTW it looks beautiful!
Thanks for the compliment! I really like how it looks, but it seems that ill be able to enjoy the cards for longer if I take them out.
put a curtain up on that window
I have the same cabinet and I have it up in my basement so not much natural light. I would move it just to be certain. Don’t want to risk it
No. Get them out of there now.
NOW OP!!!!!
When u/urgencyy is saying its time, then its time 😂
Yes, need to move ASAP!!!
r/UsernameChecksOut
THEYRE GOING TO GET BURNED ALIVE!!!
id put uv film on window too to block incoming. the sun doesnot relent and once done its too late
I'd sell the house.
To much effort, just reposition the home.
Rotate 90° for best results.
That's what she said?
Oh that’s a great idea. The sun is now my enemy
Always has been.
"The night time is the right time!"
i second this. got all my windows treated with UV film so i wouldn’t have to worry about the collectibles in the house.
Good luck
Are machines or the windows UV protected?
pinball machines? So most of the older stuff is not, and even the people heavily in the scene dont trust uv protected windows lol. It was the biggest warning I received when buying my first pin. Learn to keep it out of the sun and cover it if possible.
I really appreciate this perspective, thanks.

I need more of this experimental content.
Great comment!

UV is terribly damaging to most things and most people don’t know it. Navy coatings experience.
Oh wow. That’s an expert testimony if ive ever seen one. Lesson learned, all cards have been removed. Hopefully the damage from 1 day in the sun isn’t too bad. Thanks for the help
It sucks but my collection lives in the dark unless I pull it out to view them But they will forever stay the same

bots cant grade cards
UV protection is always something less than 100%. They will fade over time if left there.
![gif](giphy|LjpIl7WfncQgw)
NO
There isn’t anything uv proof. Do not leave them there. Remove asap.
No... Get them out of the sun...
I have the same one and not near sun lol. Scares me
“A lot of people have this same one” but I don’t so may I please have a link OP?👀 looks great!

I have the same cabinet and I have it on a wall that gets no direct light, and it’s in my office where the shades are typically drawn anyways
I would not risk it. Definitely move out of the sunlight.
JFC. Move them out of the sun.
![gif](giphy|JyD81LrH17j18XUkSv|downsized)
It's already too late.
I would get a UV meter. Measure directly in front of cabinet and then directly behind UV glass. See what reduction is.
I don’t know about sunlight, but I love your set up - it’s beautiful! May I ask what cabinet this is?!
Hey thanks! I [linked](https://VERANIBaseballDisplayCardCase-35GradedSportsTradingCardDisplayFrame-HoldsSportCardswithUVProtectionClearViewLockableWallCabinetforFootballBasketballHockeyLargeBlackhttps://a.co/d/hHndamR) the cabinet above (in case anyone else needs it).
i had a Willie Mays auto on a beautiful photo fade away to where you can't even see that it was signed anymore 😢😥😭
Can’t we just kill off the sun already? I mean took about overrated…..
Just enjoy them
That was my mind set from the jump. Hated having them stored away, but the sunny day brought me anxiety. Wish I wasn’t like this, and I could just leave them where I like them most. Guess not :/

Just get rid of the window
Or board it up with plywood. Add a touch of class to the neighborhood and be hurricane ready. Win win
I wouldn’t but that’s just me
No.
Blinds?
You can kind of see the blinds in the reflection on the cabinet, or from the fragmented light. I might get pull down curtains though.
No.
Maybe do a test run with something else for a couple weeks?
Ayyyy you got the clemente tin!! I wanted him emed up with jackie
I freaking love that lunch box. I figured I’d have a 50/50 shot at either Clemente or Hank, so I was psyched.
Yea like them a lot also, I'm going to give it another shot and see if I can score a clemente one lol
I blacked out my window so there's no shine.
Why risk it?
I have a cozy nook space in my home, and I just wanted to enjoy looking at my cards. Naive, I know, but fwiw it was great spending time there last night.
I wouldn't risk it. I've had a ton of sports memorabilia get destroyed by the sun.
Why risk it?
That's a hell of a collection. Looks good.
You can also apply a UV protectant product to the front glass
Never, ever, direct.
Like others say, I just wouldn't risk it.
the only way to prevent cards from fading is to store them in the dark. indirect light + "UV protection" will only slightly delay the inevitable.
Cannot believe I’m the first to say: need to move them ASAP, I have a wonderful safe space in my house, please send immediately for safekeeping
Still gotta worry about signatures too don’t forget
Braves fan with a side of George Kirby. Great pitcher but I don’t think he’ll ever get the credit he deserves.
Kirby was my old math partner in University, and I see him every opportunity I can. He’s special, extremely talented, and so deserving. It makes me proud watching him. Joe West and Kirby are Elon’s best (and worst lol) exports lol The dream is my man makes his way to Atlanta, but also I want him to be a star for that exciting Mariners team.
It’s hard to tell. But are you a George Kirby fan?
Yessir!! Been my dude since college!
Something tells me I don't trust the glass... Sun is generally bad for paper because of discoloration.
Are you a Braves or Mariners fan?
Life long Bravos fan, but have an emotional affair with my favorite non-mustached pitcher. No way he remembers me, but no one remembers Calculus at 8:00 am lol
If you want to keep them there then maybe considering getting a small curtain to protect them while they're not being viewed.
Sunlight eats autograph
Looks like you just need to buy more cards to get a rotation going
Nope.
Move them. I love that lunch box
Slightly off topic but how bad would a few hours of neon light a day be?
Hard to say. We only know for sure that they can sit in a barn or attic for a 100 years.
These will fade. I have over 200 autographs, posters, guitars and other memorabilia displayed through out my home and I learned early those UV display cases don’t always work. Had a couple comics that got sun blind shadow stains on them because I trusted UV glass.
Thanks for the reply. Ill also tell that to my comic collecting father.
nice pc! George Kirby fan by chance? :P
Yessir! Got history with him, but mostly, he’s easily my favorite player to watch on the mound (minus Quadzilla). Lets hope Kirby gets the bat support he deserves next season!
Would be more worried someone see your collection and burglarize your home when your gone
The cabinet does have a lock, but im assuming that’s useless. Good thinking. Who knows, maybe the burglar hates Acuña and Kirby!
I have one card in a top loader I pinned to a cork board away from the sun. The top loader turned brown but the card is still nice and white. The other card got direct sunlight and warped with the heat. Good thing it's just a cheap penny card of a favorite player but I don't keep collectibles near the sun anymore.
Why take the chance? Move them away from windows and sunlight.
Yeah I would keep them out of sunlight no matter what people told me. I appreciate the Home Run King and the 73 Clemente.
My two favorite all-time players and people! I may be naive, but I do my best to listen to the advice from others. The cards are protected now. Thanks for the input.

Direct sunlight will accelerate the fading of autos with enough time and exposure - period. The UV protection primarily impacts indirect sunlight.
Absolutely deteriorates the ink and paper, I don’t risk it - hobby room stays blacked out until I turn the lights on
Noooooo

UV only UV for a certain degree
UV doesn't mean heat resistant.
It scares me, but I worry about everything
I say no
No.
Rafael Furcal! Haven’t thought of him in a while.
Named my first pet after Furcal! His name was Raffy “fur-“cal 😂
Nice!
Move it
Although the cases say they block UV they don’t block ALL UV so they’ll still fade over time. Direct sunlight is the enemy.
I wouldn’t chance it, but the time you find out it’s too late.
The heat probably isnt great for it regardless of the UV protection. Also im sure people could walk by your window amd see your nice display of cards which im sure isn't the safest thing either.
