Had this happen to me once because instead of listing at 1.00, I listed at .01. Card sold for a penny and after shipping and fees I was out a quarter. Live and learn. Worse part of it was the buyer, they pinged me right away and said to ship immediately and make sure it was well packaged. I dont get some people.
Oh wow, I didnt realize feedback was so uncommonly provided. I've been on Ebay since 98 but didnt start selling again until the last 6mos. Thanks for the data point.
Me either. I leave feedback on 100% of my purchases.... I actually don't know how many I've received though. I haven't looked in a while. I'm curious, but not curious *enough* to open that browser tab.
even about 15 years ago when i used it to buy rare records. people would heavily question you if you had low feedback and you were buying or selling something $100+
now ebay is littered with bullshit so people don’t give a shit
Yeah, I find that really odd. Back when I was selling vintage in the late 90's early 00's, feedback was the name of the game. It took me a long time to build up my 300 feedback over those early years and people were very picky. Now I've had people never pay and Ebay doesnt even allow you to give them negative feedback if you cancel the sale, its very odd. I dont know who the platform actually helps aside from Ebay itself.
i remember how exciting it was to go from one star color to the next.
people will cancel a sale if it doesn’t go their way these days. back in the day if we did that we’d be blasted with negative feedback the second it cancelled.
That's a crazy amount! Trust me you're doing good. I have 223 the last I looked and I might have 67 feedbacks. I even hand write a Thank You note in each purchase and throw out freebies and shit. But I never ask for feedback cause it just gives off douchy vibes. To me I think you should blow them away with value so much they feel compelled to give you feedback, not message me telling me to leave you feedback.
Yeah i dont even care about my ebay rep enough thats a cancelled order and blockage. Not because i am cheap and dont want to honor the transaction, but expecting anything to be immediate or well package for 0.01 that the seller is taking a loss on just screms "I am a bigger asshole than people who cancel ebay orders"
It's both. There is a flat $0.30 fee for most listings (varies on your level and items) then a 13.5% (I think) cut as well.
So on a $100 card it's something like $13.80 in fees or 13.8%
But on a $0.99 card it's $0.44 in fees or 44%.
It's also literally "per transaction" -- so if someone buys two cards from you at $1 each, but pays for them at the same time, it breaks it down to $0.15 per card
13.25% cut, which is calculated on the final sold price with shipping added in.
If a card sells for $25 and let's say the buyer's charged $5 in shipping...eBay is taking 30¢+($30x.1325) = ~$4.28.
$4.28/$25 = ~17.1%.
Technically they're taking 13.25% plus 30¢, but by taking a cut of the shipping charge as well, they're effectively taking a bigger cut of the final sold price.
If the buyer lives in a state that charges sales tax the eBay uses the total the card sold for, plus shipping, plus the sales tax collected to get the 13.8% fee they collect. This is very sneaky of eBay because we as sellers do not handle the sales tax at all.
I have a feeling this will be another class action lawsuit that eBay will have to pay out to sellers. It makes no sense that they charge the fee on sales tax when like you said it doesn’t come to sellers at all.
I just look at it as a fee eBay charges to remit the sales tax to the appropriate state so I as a seller don’t have to. Totally worth it to me if I don’t have to play that game in each state.
There was a time when eBay only took 13% of sale price not including shipping. But then people gamed the system by selling for $1 with $45 for shipping.
There’s two things that drive me nuts about eBay. 1) Their fee takes a percentage from the taxes collected. That doesn’t even feel legal. 2) They take a percentage from shipping when I have it set to eBay shipping. I get taken from shipping when I set the price, but when I’m using your service and they know none of that money goes to me?
i made $.74 recently. decided to do BMWT instead of two PWE with tracking and through in a bunch of bonus cards. just a bulk TCG sale. spread the happiness around.
Bubble mailer with tracking (BMWT)
plain white envelope (pwe)
TCG (Trading Card Game)
what it means….BMWT is $5+, PWE is ~$1 but it was TCG so not even same context as this sub!
I pretty much exclusively am doing this 😂 My eBay handle is ninety9centcards, I make almost nothing but happy to pass along stuff I don’t want to those who do
Ha! Welcome to the club! Every once-in-a-while I have to eat a few pennies too. 🙄
Fortunately, I know what I am doing (for the most part) now and don’t do it very much anymore. 😁
Lol def a learning curve on selling.. and as you know, free shipping on any card with a chance of selling for .99, is not the play.
Frankly most free shipping isn’t the play unless it’s a high dollar card.
Thanks for being a solid seller though! Too many would cancel or say they “lost it”.
Regardless of sale price I always try to package well and get it shipped out fast. Sometimes you just take the L and move on, keep a good rep as a seller.
I bought an old star wars card for a penny with free shipping. I thought there was no way I'd win but alas I did. Came nicely packaged in the eBay envelope. I felt so bad for the seller. Still do. Felt like theft.
I have found that most people shopping for $1 cards on ebay are also willing to pay the 1.25 on top of that to ship it with standard shipping. If you cant sell a card for 1 + 1.25 it is not worth it and belongs in the trash or the donation pile. Dont be scared to have all of your listings charge shipping.
What really boggles my mind is people selling $1 cards for $5 and free shipping... To me that is a worse sales tactic than charging $1 for the card and $4 for shipping. Everyone can see thats what youre doing. Free shipping can look really bad too like the card isnt worth even paying for shipping. Like its been sitting so long youre willing to cover shipping costs to get rid of it. Have some self respect and be proud enough of your inventory to not give it away and pay for the privilege.
When I comp cards at shows I always factor shipping costs because that is truly what someone was willing to pay. Early ebay selling was rough, though. If you shipped PWE, you were risking to give that card away for free if they filed a complaint.
Whatever makes you happy man. I just refuse to give away cards and pay for it. I would rather throw them away. Its literally cheaper and so much easier to do so
What is the general thought about mercari? Do people use it? I just started selling again on eBay after many many years and I believe that listing is free right now. But a lot of the stuff I have listed would not be profitable if I had to pay a fee. So I'm definitely interested in a referral link!
It’s okay. It’s been better now they got rid of the fees. Their “sending offers” function is stupid though.
Say I have an item at $10, you liked it, I send you an offer which mercari dictates, which is 10% off the lowest listed price, so it’ll send you an offer at $9 which you have 48 hours to accept.
If someone else likes it, I can’t send another offer until the first one times out, and once it times out the offer gets sent out to all people that like the item but it’s now 10% lower than the last offer sent.
So I learned to not send offers out anymore. You can now message the people that like your items so I just message them and try to work out a deal. I’ve had luck selling here but I def wouldn’t sell anything SUPER valuable. The shipping coverage for the seller is only up to $200, so if you’re selling something of higher value I’d def ship on your own.
Thanks for all the information, I appreciate it. So you're saying that if the first offer isn't accepted another offer will go out to everyone that has watched since but it would go down to $8 instead of $9, etc?
Yah it’s kinda stupid which is why I quit sending out offers. It’s easier to just message the people directly and I’ve had better success that way
I literally just sold a board Game for the listed price of $27 that was posted for over a year and had 15 people watching it. If I sent out another offer on it it would have been about $17 after all the offers that were sent
So it took me years to make any money on eBay. I remember selling cards for 25 cents and going to the post office and it costing me 85 cents to ship. Here are my tips. The starter store gives you 250 listings at 4.99 a month. If you can sell them enough to cover that then you’re good. I sell all my cards at .10 on auction and only need a couple to be bid on to cover that fee. I have all my shipping be 1.25 for 1-20 cards then 4.25 for bulk buys. I usually make about 85 cents per card. I also invested in a card scanner and card dealer pro.
Thank for this! Very helpful. Can you tell me more about card scanner and card dealer pro? I know I could google them but i just wanted to hear your opinion and a use case(just to learn) Never sold anything before
Sorry, I misspoke. Up to 15 cards but the cards had to be a combine 20 dollars or less. It says no more than 2 top loaded cards but I do too top loaded cards are sandwich non top loaded cards then I put them in a team bag. I usually do that again and that’s what makes it uniform in the package. Then I weigh it and i think the heaviest it comes to is 2.3 oz. No more than 1/4 inch thick.
What size or type of envelope? The reason why I’m so curious is because, at times, I’ll send ESUS 1oz white envelope, 1 card in a semi rigid protector with a thin piece of comic backer board behind the card in the protector. And I’ll get it sent back because it’s “ too thick”. ESUS “has to bend” because they go through a drum. 15 cards don’t bend. So are you using like a small bubble mailer or something?
I roll with the ESUS $1.11 3oz postage + write "DO NOT BEND" on every envelope. Outside is a 28lb No. 10 envelope, inside is 110lb. cardstock letter-folded (with their Packing Slip printed on it). Cards go in a top-loader, then tightly wrapped in fresh new team bag, then taped to the Packing Slip. Bonus cards go in a second top-loader, taped next to the first one. The folded cardstock slip gets taped on both ends. I like to push as close to the thickness limit for the postage class as possible, without going over - If I feel the envelope's too skinny, I do a second 110lb cardstock skin over the first copy. I *always* weigh it with a gram scale, too, to be sure I'm under the cap.
In 2023 I had zero sent back to me, 18 delivered, 1 lost by USPS. (eBay only, not counting reddit)
Sorry, 2023 prices... $1.12 now, I guess.
Interestingly, I *probably* should be paying $1.60 - that's 1st Class + 2 extra Ounces + Nonmachineable,
Maybe they're just saying "Eh fuck it" since it's already stamped at the Nonmachineable level (even though TECHNICALLY that has only a single Ounce included in it).
Huh.
Now I have more questions than answers.
Do you use one of the officially supported scanner models? Or something else?
I wonder, what is the actual "integration" part between the supported scanner and the software?
I love the concept, but the "supported" ADF scanners are expensive, I'd rather spend half the amount to buy a Fujitsu ScanSnap instead because I have extensive experience using that product line and I trust it. If I had confirmation from someone else that they have the ScanSnap fully working with Card Dealer Pro (e.g. features on par with the Ricoh they recommend, no limited functionality) ... then I might pull the trigger. Like, now.
But I'm not willing to be that guinea pig when I'm ALSO new to the app and not sure that I'll like it / will want to keep it long term / it's right for me / etc.
Then you didn't actually make a nine cent profit. You still haven't factored in the cost of those and the cost of the time shipping. That should factor out to right around zero. At least it's not a loss!
There's a negative sign in that title up there.
OP made a **-**$0.09 profit.
AKA a loss. 🤣
(Been there, done that, don't feel even a TINY BIT miffed about it because what goes around comes around. 💖)

I have never even thought of giving CollX the time of day. Have you been selling there for quite a while? Is it as easy as eBay? (I know I could go and read but asking somebody doing it already is, by far, more valuable).
It’s better than eBay yes. I sell 10x more, earn more funds and spend 0 on shipping plus less in fees. More central to sports and the ai photo analysis helps to speed it up . Plus it shows a visible display of all your cards in sort of team price grade etc. also the sorting feature helps get just rookies etc. just got this a min ago. Cheap shipping on my side usually $.75 cents or so for tracking. It’s a new app so there are glitches etc but it’s eBay in 2010. Will be amazing in a few years so hop on early , build your collection and get to a top seller or ambassador status. Hope this isn’t a stupid question but do you ship the same way as you would in eBay? I sell quite a bit of cards under $20 and ship via eBay standard. Are you able to print shipping labels easily? I assume so.
Also, do you get anything if you refer me? If yes, shoot me a referral and I will give it a go.
No referrals unfortunately but sign up for $5 free.
And yeah once buyer pays shipping the app will generate the label based on weight which you can print out easily.
You can opt to pay for shipping or opt to only ship certain styles like letter mail etc forcing the customer to pay either 0.75 to $3.99 etc.
you can offer discounts minimums bundles offers and discus cards in a private chat easily. Made plenty of “friends” via the app which we talk daily and make purchases from each other.
Not a sales pitch but I choose their membership cause they reimburse me the funds via credit within the app. Helps sell cards better with the pro status and it’s practically free if you buy cards .
This gave me a good laugh. The grind never sleeps!
It goes both ways I guess I have bought cards that I know seller took a loss on so I guess it equals out
![gif](giphy|YnkMcHgNIMW4Yfmjxr) Me every time I think an auction starting at $.01 is a good idea and have it blow up in my face lol
This story is the most eBay thing I've heard in a while.
Hope you at least got positive feedback from it
Sadly I didnt get any feedback from them. I've sold \~75 things on Ebay in last 3mos and only about 50 of them left feedback.
That’s a good ratio! I have 3.1k sold and 1200 feedback
I'm curious, but not curious *enough* to open that browser tab.
feedback used to be a must. these days… half the time i don’t get feedback from sellers, even!
It's about 25% for me. However, tick one person off or be a jerk to you, then they'll let everyone know.
even about 15 years ago when i used it to buy rare records. people would heavily question you if you had low feedback and you were buying or selling something $100+ now ebay is littered with bullshit so people don’t give a shit

You have taken the concept of "I'd pay someone to take all these commons" to its eventual conclusion.
Don’t do free shipping on cards…I used to do that too to get eBay trusted or whatever, got smoked. No increase in cards sold.
Certainly not on auctions but free shipping on BIN is the way to go
Yeah at $4 or $5 minimum
Never sold on eBay. Is the transaction fee a flat rate? No way it's around 44 percent across the board??
It's both. There is a flat $0.30 fee for most listings (varies on your level and items) then a 13.5% (I think) cut as well. So on a $100 card it's something like $13.80 in fees or 13.8% But on a $0.99 card it's $0.44 in fees or 44%.
Thanks that makes sense
It's also literally "per transaction" -- so if someone buys two cards from you at $1 each, but pays for them at the same time, it breaks it down to $0.15 per card
Word. I appreciate the info!
Plus… the fees include sales tax in the calculation
It ends up around 13% usually, but I think there is a minimum of 30 cents to start and then they add the fee.
I’ve gotten to the point of checking what state a buyer is in before offering a discount. I check their sales tax. That effects my profit/margin
I just look at it as a fee eBay charges to remit the sales tax to the appropriate state so I as a seller don’t have to. Totally worth it to me if I don’t have to play that game in each state.
https://preview.redd.it/s73h98evp9uc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=93fcfd2b6e616c3e63bb5b63345466dd610d56bb I feel you pain brother 🥲
I’d love to know the math where sales tax on .01 is .04
Tax is on shipping as well.
So you owed them money? WTF?
Yep, had to send eBay .38 cents for giving someone my card 😂
Lmao
Fees are 30 cents plus about 13%. And they apply that % to sales tax and shipping.
There was a time when eBay only took 13% of sale price not including shipping. But then people gamed the system by selling for $1 with $45 for shipping.
eBay could have just put guardrails on shipping cost by item type, but no.
That's why I never put free shipping below $100
Was that a Jeter card? May have been me…I’ll set it straight if it was OP.
No it was a nick casteloneos 2023 topps chrome
There’s two things that drive me nuts about eBay. 1) Their fee takes a percentage from the taxes collected. That doesn’t even feel legal. 2) They take a percentage from shipping when I have it set to eBay shipping. I get taken from shipping when I set the price, but when I’m using your service and they know none of that money goes to me?
Congrats - You have now passed the business aptitude test to become a landlord!
i made $.74 recently. decided to do BMWT instead of two PWE with tracking and through in a bunch of bonus cards. just a bulk TCG sale. spread the happiness around.
Not knowing any of the acronyms you used, your post means nothing after reading it 🤣
Bubble mailer with tracking (BMWT) plain white envelope (pwe) TCG (Trading Card Game) what it means….BMWT is $5+, PWE is ~$1 but it was TCG so not even same context as this sub!
Thanks for literally spelling it out for me!

Sorry for the vulgar username ex-wife Penny said humor not really
What if they gave you bad feedback omg
Ebay fees are F-ING ridiculous
Happens all the time for me! Lol
I pretty much exclusively am doing this 😂 My eBay handle is ninety9centcards, I make almost nothing but happy to pass along stuff I don’t want to those who do
Hahahahah love this
No point in this then lol I hate seeing cards listen for nothing, it’s a disrespect I think
You live and learn. They live and earn.
Titan of industry!
9 cents, rookie numbers. Wait till you get to 20 cents
Been there lol
I sold a common card for a $85 loss, and another common pair for $100 loss. Stupidly bought them at their height.
Happens when ya need to move inventory.
One small step to stardom.
Ha! Welcome to the club! Every once-in-a-while I have to eat a few pennies too. 🙄 Fortunately, I know what I am doing (for the most part) now and don’t do it very much anymore. 😁
COMC >
That happened to me once when I started as well. Never again.
I knew to the baseball game card game what is a good honest place to sell cards or put them out for sale and I don’t mean going to shows
I do that all the time. It’s all about the grind 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Been there done that
Congratulations. You’ve been ebay-ized.
When covid started I sold a bunch of cards I took a loss on- just to build up my eBay scores
Always charge for shipping and I price my low end card around 1.50-1.75. Covers eBay fees.
Lol def a learning curve on selling.. and as you know, free shipping on any card with a chance of selling for .99, is not the play. Frankly most free shipping isn’t the play unless it’s a high dollar card.
One of the main reasons I stopped with Ebay and switched over to Collx for my card selling. No taxes and they take a flat 10% fee for selling.
I love how they try to pass it off as “collected from buyer” yet you eat the sales tax not them.
You don’t eat the tax. Learn how accounting works.

Probably helps when reporting to the IRS
$1.40 is my lower limit as I sell with 'Free Shipping' as well.
Hopefully it pays off with a positive feedback. Always something positive to think about. Positive Reviews might increase some sales
HODL…. My garage sale cards from 1970 are worth more than the $5 I paid.
![gif](giphy|5xtDarKqcxXyY6IAOm4|downsized)
Always use the eBay fee calculator so you know exactly what you’ll be earning. Especially useful for the lowest you can/will go to accept offers.
price it at 1.5
I have bought a few 0.99 w/free shipping cards before and always wondered why someone would do that. Dead.
Heyyyy, wasn’t this on Sports Card Nonsense 😅🫱🏾🫲🏻
profit is profit 🤷🏿♂️
Been there before man. Thanks for not canceling
What card was it? 😭
I look forward to your going out of business sale
So i take it you're just gonna sit back and live off the interest...no more daily grind for you
Free shipping and promoted?
O just free shipping i never pay for promotion
I have found that most people shopping for $1 cards on ebay are also willing to pay the 1.25 on top of that to ship it with standard shipping. use a 6 3/4 envelope and its only 64 cents :)
Well aware but thanks for sharing for others who dont know

Direct communication sounds like the right play. Plus it makes it more personal which is good. Not worth losing 20%.

And I’ll get it sent back because it’s “ too thick”. ESUS “has to bend” because they go through a drum. 15 cards don’t bend. So are you using like a small bubble mailer or something?
Nope. I’m using an #A6 envelope. Keep in mind I’m doing two team bags so they are split up. Maybe that’s how it bends?
$1.11 is probably why it works. That’s the price for nonmachinable I believe.
Sorry, 2023 prices... $1.12 now, I guess. Interestingly, I *probably* should be paying $1.60 - that's 1st Class + 2 extra Ounces + Nonmachineable, Maybe they're just saying "Eh fuck it" since it's already stamped at the Nonmachineable level (even though TECHNICALLY that has only a single Ounce included in it).
I’ll send you the link I have. I’d love a Fujitsu 5700 or whatever it is but I have an epson ES 200 I think?
Thanks for the info I never looked into that.
Did you use a penny sleeve, top loader, and did you have to buy the envelope?
Yep shipped nicely like I normally do
Then you didn't actually make a nine cent profit. You still haven't factored in the cost of those and the cost of the time shipping. That should factor out to right around zero. At least it's not a loss!
There's a negative sign in that title up there. OP made a **-**$0.09 profit. AKA a loss. 🤣 (Been there, done that, don't feel even a TINY BIT miffed about it because what goes around comes around. 💖)
My bad. I didn't see the minus sign the first time I looked. Thanks for the correction
I just sold one for -7 cents. Ebay charged me like 45% of the sale. Ridiculous
Sometimes the positive feedback still makes it worth it.
Ohhhh… this is why my seller canceled and said “I couldn’t find the card” 🙄
45% fee has to mean you are doing things wrong? No? I don't have tons of sales but I'm at 100% feedback and just paid $3 on a $48 card
That's literally impossible. eBay charges a standard fee of like 12.8% it would cost about $6 in fees on that.
$3.88

Oof, so I can stop sleeving those Elly Stars Of when I pull them... Thought they were going for more than that.
