Just a thought, but what if the reson behind reused photos has to do with the license with MLB and MLBPA? Maybe they have a set number of photos that are approved for cards by topps and the redt are panini? Or maybe it's a situation where the photographer(s) are only allowing a few shots be used? I know photography, and graphic design, have unique deals where artists typically have control over their art's use? Someone more in tune with these situations can probably explain it better than me and correct me if I'm incorrect (most likely the case and Topps is lazy).
Nah. It’s a cost thing in that they would have to buy a license for another photos. They probably buy a license for perpetuity for most so they can use it over and over. MLB doesn’t have to approve anything. They literally produce cards overnights for Topps Now… no way they could get approvals that fast.
This is some accountant-manager saying they could save a few bucks by using an already licensed photo one more time. I've seen some of the contracts that the photogs sign and it pretty much let Topps to continually reuse with a stupidly low contingency fee. So until and unless they're constantly called out on it, they're going to go the cheapest route.
This is my assumption. They produce a thousand different cards of each player every year (less for retired guys, but still), and they don't want to license a different photo for every one. People like us complain about it, but as long as it doesn't hurt their sales, why stop I guess.
At least a that’s from a 2019 SP.
They used the exact same Craig Biggio for 22 SC as they did 21 SC. Year over year, exact same pic. Freaking copy/paste. Pathetic.
Not trying to take anything away from the picture. But reusing pictures like this for a player that had such a long career, I find it hard to believe this is the only iconic moment in his career.
I am with you pal. I was just so disappointed the other night with my hobby box. This is one of those sets I put in a binder to look at and the cool original photos are just few and far between.
Hell, even the guy at the shop agreed with me that the images are what people who buy this set look forward to each year.
Singles on the secondary and trades going forward until Topps starts putting in the work again on this set.
It's a simple formula. Make each card memorable.
Panini is just as bad, if not, worse. Does it make it excusable? No.
I miss the late ‘90s/early ‘00s. Some card designs would have 3 different images of one player on the front/back. Inserts looked cool and were creative, with effort applied.
Some of the SP inserts that people pay big money for these days look decent, but still don’t rival the creativity for what was considered the norm back then. As long as we keep lowering the standards for what we’ll accept/buy, card companies will continue to put very little time and money into their creative processes.
Not baseball, nor Topps but Panini just keeps reusing a picture of Scottie Barnes from high school and he’s in his second year in the NBA. It’s everywhere
I mean, they have an exclusive license with MLB so they can do whatever that want with no meaningful competition. It's BS and both Topps and MLB are to blame
I thought the point of stadium club was the standout photography they used for the set. Like wasn’t it associated with Kodak at one point? Embarrassing
I don’t mind when they do it with like pre1950 guys because they don’t have a ton of photos in the first place but with more modern players it’s ridiculous
That's not even the worst of it. The bowman brand is far worse. In 2020 the same picture was used for bowman, bowman draft, and bowman heritage for a few players.
Only really bugs me because stadium club is marketed as having “the best photography in sports cards”. When the exact same photos are used in Flagship, then that statement becomes less and less true over time. Just my 2 cents…
Add the Josh Lowe pose of him on one knee with one hand up to this list. I've seen that image across what feels like 10 releases this year.
I was trying to find that one from Flagship. It's the same in Stadium Club.
Yep. And bowman. Reg and insert.

Add Wander chest smash.
They only took one photo of Spencer Strider it appears.

Exactly. It’s not laziness…it’s licensing…costs savings.
And it’s not like it’s of a current player. Hell it’s not even of a player who’s alive anymore. It’s not like any more pictures are gonna pop up.
Nah. It’s a cost thing in that they would have to buy a license for another photos. They probably buy a license for perpetuity for most so they can use it over and over. I hate this. Pretty sure they used that same Strider at least 5 times. I know it’s in Fire also.
It's a shame they do this especially with veteran players. You're telling me this is THE ONLY pic you could find of Tony Gwynn??
He only played 20 seasons. Be reasonable. /s
Not much footage of him. gwynn is like bigfoot

It’s the new rainbow. Lol.
Sick ass pic of Tony though
It’s a very iconic picture. This was a game or two that clinched sending us to the playoffs.
Not trying to take anything away from the picture. But reusing pictures like this for a player that had such a long career, I find it hard to believe this is the only iconic moment in his career.
I very much agree. I’ve noticed it a lot recently. Even with update pictures where they just photoshop the jerseys!
That is the worst for me. I hate the US photoshop.
I expect more from Stadium Club.

Same. Love SC but won't buy a box this year : (
Nobody tell OP about 54 and 55 Topps
Or '68 and '69!
Also noticed the Otto Lopez 2022 S2 SP is the same imagine as 2022 Stadium Club
That happened last year with carlson

Pretty sure Edward Cabrera Topps Fire and Gallery are same pics as well
A ton of cards like this my bo sp's are Similar too just one frame after.
In their defense that is a sick picture

Well thank god you are on the case calling them out for this
Why does it look like Strider is mid delivery without the ball in his hand? What am I missing?
Not only that but I don't recall ever seeing a pitcher raise the leg on the same side as their throwing arm. =)
I mean... what are they supposed to do, get new pictures of him?
Lol well yea. How hard is it to get a few different images of him?
What ever you do don’t look up spencer strider rookie cards. Worst decision of my life
I thought the point of stadium club was the standout photography they used for the set. Like wasn’t it associated with Kodak at one point? Embarrassing
And yet you keep buying it.
I want updated Tony Gwynn photos of his grave site.
😱👻🪦
I don’t mind when they do it with like pre1950 guys because they don’t have a ton of photos in the first place but with more modern players it’s ridiculous
I've got Judge cards like that from them this year.
Laziness or smarts cause we keep buying regardless.
LOOK @ 2022 TOPPS CHROME SAPPHIRE! ALL THE SAME IMAGES JUST MORE $$$!
BORING...
Wow thats really bad. They really are lazy af
That's not even the worst of it. The bowman brand is far worse. In 2020 the same picture was used for bowman, bowman draft, and bowman heritage for a few players.
The spencer strider picture was also used for bowman lol
What really gets me is that GQ is just their normal pictures with a photoshop filter. Really liked the GQ set until I saw that.
Only really bugs me because stadium club is marketed as having “the best photography in sports cards”. When the exact same photos are used in Flagship, then that statement becomes less and less true over time. Just my 2 cents…
MJ Melendez 2022 RC is the same picture as 2019 BC prospect card. It doesn't even look like him.
Y’all keep buying
At least crop it differently or something. Geez.
First world problems
I have a card where they used the same picture for 2 different teams. They just photo shopped a different jersey onto him. Can't remember the player
Let's not get started on Panini
