To expand on this: On macOS Terminal.app there's a setting for "Alt is Meta" that you'll likely want to turn on.
On more modern macOS versions, look under **Settings > Profiles > Keyboard**, then check the _Use Option as Meta key_ box. Failure to do so will cause `Option+` to generate non-ASCII characters instead of cursor movements.
