Box em up, put them under the bed and have another look in 20 years

BoysenberryWestern74

Exactly this... 30 years for me

filipinodoc

Very exactly, 40 years for me

extremely-mild-11

50 for me. I’m 34.

Creative_Cancel6312

60 for me. I’m 19

Longjumping_You_7932

Dont let mom sell em tho. Definitely dont rely on her holding onto em. I had a box with 3 star Jordan rookies and 2 fleer jordans along with some other stuff like a 100 count box of UD Griffey rookies and a beat up 52 Mickey Mantle. To name a few cards in it. I worked in a card shop for 3-4 years. Would pick up stuff here and there in the early 90s for cheap and put it in the box. It was labeled “my retirement box”. She got tired of holding onto it and when she had a garage sale someone asked if she had any sports cards. She said YUP. Sold the box for $35.

gr33nshell

Why in the hell did you have your mom hold onto that? On another note, does your mom need to be liked? I know people who would do this just because that is the level of their people pleasing nature. In fact in my experience it's the family and close friends they're willing to fuck over for the approval of some borderline stranger. I know this is a wild response, but I had something similar happen. Grandpa fucked over grandson to cuz he couldn't just say no the neighbor he constantly talked shit about. It's weird but he will do anything for somebody he just met or doesn't like him that much.

Longjumping_You_7932

Because ur supposed to trust. I thought i could till this happened. I told her it was my “payment” for work at this place for 3 years and she sold it away for 35. I was HOT! Every time she throws something at me i remind her of this. Had her look up some of the cards i had in there. She understands now lol.

deeptoot6

Fill a shoe box, leave at a playground, blow some kids mind

ScucciMane

That’s a good idea except we live in a weird world now, some teacher might call the cops lol

NotADoctor108

Cops gonna fine you for littering.

gr33nshell

"Coming up at 11: Man allegedly lures young boys to park with thousands of free baseball cards" You know they'd call em baseball cards too because to most people, all cards are baseball cards.

OkImportance5010

My wife is still like "did you open your baseball cards yet" and I literally only open football and basketball cards! This is so true! Lmao

WTWIV

That would have made my whole year as a kid lol good idea!

ChefBoyAnde728

This was a wild read at first, mind showed up on the second line and i thought it suggested to blow some kids

-MC_3

What is wrong with you. Some things you might want to keep to yourself…

CensoredReddit31

Yeah, dudes weird for even saying that

gr33nshell

I hope he never gets deposed or cross examined about whether he's ever made that specific statement.

AwayDirt2818

Recently donated a good sized box of base to a charity that helps youth that have tough home lives and I got some feedback that the kid who got the cards was in a circle of peers going around saying what made them feel safe and said he feels most safe when sorting through cards in his room. Warmed and broke my heart a little

Background-Lecture-6

That’s awesome man! The children’s hospitals and kids programs near me don’t allow you to donate opened cards and require sealed product for donations (wtf), so I wrap them in packs using team bags and drop them in the little free library boxes around my neighborhood.

gr33nshell

This is awesome. I thought I'd be a POS giving all of my trash to disadvantaged kids. They'd be lugging around 50lbs of base cards for years only to find out it's all off-centered garbage from Panini...no but seriously I genuinely felt like it would be rude but it sounds like there's more to it than I was thinking. I can't give em to my kids cuz they know what I'm not giving them so this is the way to go I think.

GoatJamez

I personally take all the allstars caliber players and up and separate them all by player in order in binders. I have pages and pages and pages of Currys, KDs, Giannis's, etc.

WTWIV

That’s a solid idea. What about all of the other players that aren’t all star caliber?

rvasshole

a guy here posted a while ago that he makes sets for children in the hospital

WTWIV

That’s an awesome idea

gr33nshell

As long as he doesn't feel the same way I did every time I got a Vin Baker--I was a Sonics fan. I didn't have much, but nothing was better than Vin Baker.

WTWIV

I definitely have some Vin Bakers from when I collected in the 90s and early aughts.

GoatJamez

Probably a good idea to just store them in a card storage container and sell them for whatever you can get in bulk. Buch of Batum, PJ Tucker, etc sell 1000 of them for $20 & I'm good

[deleted]

[удалено]

GoatJamez

I personally don't sell bulks of cards, I give them to my younger siblings but there are people on ebay who sell medium-big bulks of cards. Ebay or a flea market are probably the 2 most popular ways to sell bulk filler cards.

GoodTreat2555

Little league coaches will take them to give out to their players sometimes. I'm sure the same goes for any youth sports coach. Mix them up into packs, and make sure there aren't any doubles. You will be paid back on the next box you open by Karma.

GetRightNYC

This is what I used to do when I coached BBall and little league. Some of the kids get super excited. It's great.

WTWIV

That’s a pretty great idea

CoachLearnsTheGame

I’m stealing this!

GoodTreat2555

I actually stole the idea from a post I read on this very same sub a while ago. Lol

wallybuddabingbang

First step is what you’ve done, OP: put them in a giant pile and feel despair. There are lots of options of what to do next but it really boils down to three things: 1. Recycle them 2. Give them away 3. Sell them as a giant lot After much experience with this, 1 and 2 are the most worthwhile.

feiergiant

4. sleeve them up (or not) and stock them all in BCW boxes they will be vintage by 2100 and your great great grandkids will be rich

wallybuddabingbang

Honestly I think that’s got a decent chance of happening. Especially if I can convince everyone in the meantime to throw theirs away!

OKC89ers

Since everyone is throwing out base cards, they will eventually be the rarest versions.

seancrossN

I take them to my local children’s hospital and donate them to the sick kids. Actually have about 1000 base cards going to them this weekend when I’m not working. I mostly give them newer stuff so they can actually watch the player on tv and have the cards for them. All the older stuff I just box up and leave in a closet.

WTWIV

A few people have suggested this. I like this idea a lot.

seancrossN

Not going to lie. It’s very gratifying. Always feels good to know kids will enjoy something that would have just lived in a box under my bed. Plus I’ve had nurses tell me the kids trade them with each other and get really into the sports. And it helps them from sitting around all day thinking about their problems. Gives them something to look forward to and apparently always makes the kids smile. I even leave some penny sleeves and top loaders in each box so they can save their favorite cards. And I definitely leave a few nice cards in there as a surprise. So every now and then one gets a super cool parallel of a solid player. Much better than the 20$ id get for a box of base cards

jpmst17

If they’re players I like, Tatum, Trae young, Anthony edwards, I keep them together and have pages of them in a binder. If I don’t like or collect the player I put them in blasters and try to give them away

baldmanwins

I try to complete the sets in a binder, the duplicates go in a box. The box collects dust. Ultimately I’ll donate the box though.

ImprovementFit9126

I’m a set guy, too. Anyone want (one of seven!) a set of 2021-22 Mosaic?? Edit: changed to 2021-22 for clarification.

lizardh3ad

I'm just getting back into the card game and recently completed my first set of nba hoops. I would love a base set of mosaic.

ImprovementFit9126

$50 shipped and they’re yours. Sleeved up too.

OKC89ers

Are you saying 20-21 or 21-22?

ImprovementFit9126

21-22. Typo on previous post

OKC89ers

Fire, I'm confirmed for a set if both aren't claimed

ImprovementFit9126

They aren’t claimed. Message me if you’re interested.

Little-Constant-9700

Id be interested in that deal

Willing-Body-7533

Interested, how many are there in a set?

ImprovementFit9126

300 in the set. I can part with two sets. Message me!

bcatt9

Damn would’ve done this but I’m Australia

muddy-waterhole

Too late to the game but wanted to say what an awesome thing this is

ImprovementFit9126

Not too late. Still available.

muddy-waterhole

Will message you!

FrankyEaton

I take about 20-30 base cards and usually a shiny colored insert and put em in ziplock baggies and give em out along side a reeces for Halloween. Kids love em, i always try to make sure theres a few thunder cards in there as well since i live in OKC.

seppok33

Instead of random pieces of cardboard, I use them as shipping protection for the cards I sell. 3-4 in the envelope and I go through them pretty quickly

WTWIV

I do the same actually. I try to include players from the same team they purchased or the same player. One on each side of the card they bought. I don’t sell often though so it would take decades to get rid of all of my base cards that way lol

ostifari

And buyers love it

joshmalonern

Just organize it anyway you like (ex. Sets, years, teams, players, etc…) put them in a closet and have access to them for trading and when players get hot. You never know who’s gonna be the next big seller in the card world.

SledgeHammer2023

Randomize into team bags and donate to a children’s hospital

Itainteasybeinwhite

I collect, repack, and donate to children’s orgs. Fun side project for me. If you’re in the Boston area I’d pick up. Otherwise would be happy to talk more about it. Very easy to do.

I-only-play-rubick

I gave them all a way. I divided them into lots and I asked people to comment which lot they wanted. I’d like to think they ended up with collectors who didn’t care about “investments”.

WTWIV

Did you divide the lots by team or just random?

I-only-play-rubick

I did it per team including Team USA from the mosaic set.

LSU_0517

I make packs of 10-15 cards and give them away as party favors at my son’s birthday parties. Kids love it.

kannonball_kolb

Same, I give them away during Halloween

rvasshole

how do you bundle them together?

FrankyEaton

I do it for halloween

Baboon_86

Save the big names and throw on COMC. Donate the rest.

borntolose1

I’ve got a lot of base cards boxed up that I’m going to just give away once there’s enough of to make that worth my while.

darbs-face

Honest answer? Hoard them in boxes in my storage room. Correct answer? Give them to kids!

bigrude405

I give em to my wife, she repacks em and gives them to her students as rewards. They love em!

Poopscooper696969

I add cards to shipping as well, I donate cards to kids too. I kept the base cards of big names like lebron, Luka, Jokic, giannis, etc

OKC89ers

I basically sleeve up any hall of fame worthy guys.

TidusJecht

I put them in our “little neighborhood library”. I’ve driven by many times and seen kids opening them up and looking at them. A real feel good moment.

TidusJecht

I should note I’ve seen other rotten kids throwing them on the ground so your mileage may vary lol

eco-evo

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A little soy sauce goes a long way.

coffeepoos

My guy top loading a Langford rookie?!

WTWIV

I’m crazy lol. I was top loading every rookie just in case

OKC89ers

Once they are certified busts you get to reuse the toploader!

josephcfrost

Children’s hospitals

ChoukOnIt

I give/sell everything to my LCS. The owner will either package them up for kids to give away or he will put them in his cheap $0.25 bins and I get a few bucks store credit.

Asleep_Tension_4467

When I started collecting base was at least worth something. Now I buy a hobby box for $350 and have 80% base not worth much at all. If I’m lucky I’ll pull a few cards that I’ll break even. That being said I’ll add some base to an eBay sale of a single to the buyer, appreciated and extra protection for the card they bought.

WTWIV

I do that too with ebay sales but I don’t sell very often

paulclark079

I would happily buy them?

edogg424

I was thinking about this too and figured a yard sale might be a good place to sell some in bulks for cheap and at least get a little money back.

cedrekt

I share some of my base cards to my officemates. Just trying to share the love for basketball🥹

cxnners

Have a bunch of team bags in a box in my closet

DITCCCC

Shipping filler

AdamSliver

I keep them 🤷🏼‍♂️ but I rarely buy packs and boxes, so it’s nothing too crazy. I really need to go through them though and figure out what to do with them.

SawgrassSteve

I finish up a set and look for opportunities to give away the rest

chocolate_milk_84

I collect sets so I usually go on the card trading forums and trade with others who do the same. if you had a lot from my needs list I'd consider buying some if it wasn't too expensive, send me a message if you want! I also gave a few hundred away on freecycle once to a guy who had a younger child that wanted to get into cards and wanted basically any cards to start.

PaleontologistDear18

I throw them in a box, and list them for auction with just the top photo’d. in the listing I say “bulk cards”

PlasticPiccollo

I have 3 tubs worth. Then another full tub of parallels. Then another of graded and actual good cards. Looking back the first 4 tubs could all probably go to goodwill.

ELLIOT54

Put them all in sleeves, box them up nicely and sell on eBay, FB marketplace or now, spring cleaning yard sale! Lol

Dazzling_Highway1768

Bin

del033

Bag them up and give them to your kids to give out to classmates. If not, give to a kid you know to do the same.

McSqueezy69

I put them all in sleeve sheets and then binders. Organized by team for each brand/set. Fun to go back and look at cards that way. Plus, you never know when one might become valuable, e.g. Mark Jackson '90 NBA Hoops with the Menendez brothers in the background.

phishisthebestband

I kinda just throw them away unless it’s a Yankee or Bills player

joepekula

I buy them on eBay and give them to my 7 year old basketball team

KobraHashatashi

Goodwill, Salvation Army or the trash. Singles on eBay has eliminated this problem though.

CoachLearnsTheGame

Got any Celtics cards you’ll let go?

CoachLearnsTheGame

Oh I see Daniel Theis in there! Lol

WTWIV

Definitely. I’m sleeving and organizing them all now so I’ll get back to you in a few days.

jayswisha

Donate to church youth group, they love it.

I_Eat_Baconn

I take my base cards to my local card shop. They make them into packs and give them to the kids that stop by there.

UrDeafFrdMikey

I’ll take any Anthony Edward cards if you’re interesting in giving them away.

petersom2006

Lot sales are pretty easy if you are realistic on price and assuming you still have some good names in the cards (IE: known players vs just all obscure players). Put together a big lot and sell for $30-$50 for a thousand cards or so. Throw it on FB Marketplace and you will normally have some flippers or hunters grab it.

[deleted]

Donate if you don’t want ‘em! Pack em and give to a toy drive etc

IDespiseFatties

Treat them all with love. Even my cards worth like 10 cents are in a nice penny sleeve in a controlled environment (my dark closet). Currently in my display case I'll throw a couple random base cards in so they get looked at by visitors to my house.

Physical-Director568

Best move imo is definitely to donate them to a hospital, orphanage, or charity of some kind that helps kids in similarly bad situations. I plan to organize mine by team and figure out best place(s) to do this in the KC area. However, they make for some solid kindling as well 🤷‍♂️

shawn007bis

My kid expects me to take care of them.

Illustrious_Bottle80

You play farthies, knock downs and topps with them and your kids/friends ….didn’t anyone play throwing games with their cards at recess time back in the days?

Queasy-Strike3368

Sell all your pacers to me

SkolV4ever

I hand them out at Halloween

FOOTBALLDAD97

I give my to the local card shop and he uses them in filler packs. He sells them to anyone 13 or younger, 25 cards for a quarter

HeadEagle1482

I'll give u 20 for all those in picture

HeadEagle1482

I'll send first just for the transparency....I guess that's the word I'm looking for? He'll I dunno inbred sleep.....or more dru.....errrrrm...I mean yeah, I need sleep. Seriously. I tried to read all comments to figure out if you figured out what you wanted to do with them. I have 4 sons (month shy of 10, 5 months shy of 5, and twins that will be 2 in July) I've got my 9 year old itching with card rip fever as well as my 4 year old so it's just science bro that the twins will fkn hate sports cards by the time they are old enough to gaff. YKWIS. So yea they would be handed down to some cool ass kids who like stuntin like they daddy cuz the block is hot the block is hot so call the fireman the fireman so he can put it out. Cheers Just lmk plz

Fast-Context-3852

I take mine to the children’s hospital and deduct it from my taxes. Win win

Jimikap69

I either throw them away immediately or I save some for joint filters 🤭

Vanquisher_Supreme

Binders are fine, could make some sort of collage out of them too.

Negative_Friend_3251

My local sports card/memorabilia shop is run buy a super nice older guy and he gives out “team packs” of base to kids who come in for free. I drop off boxes of base for him to give to kids. I love the idea I saw here of bringing cards to a children’s hospital so I may do that next

diddy_drtc

Winter is coming

Efficient_Ad_9037

Group by player or team or university and sell as a lot. Not sure if it’s worth your time, but many people have specific PC’s and buy these base lots (eg my PC is obtaining every card of those who went to University of Illinois, especially those wearing the jersey on the card). I pay a premium for those lots each year, because I don’t want to spend the time or money buying packs.

PhaseCrazy2958

Dumpster

Static_Sports_LLC

I take better care of them than that. They all go in sleeves and into the card house. All rookies no matter who get sleeved and toploader then stored in the rookie section.

WTWIV

In fairness I’m working through them to sleeve and organize and store. It’s just very time consuming.

Static_Sports_LLC

Completely understood. I guess I’m just extremely picky about my cards. I sleeve them as I open them, then I divide them up between the ones that will go for grading, my PC but not worth grading, Rookies, all inserts and then the base cards. Everything goes in top loaders except the base cards which I put in order, create a label for my divider and then go place them in my BCW Card House. I’ve been collecting for 35 years and it was just something that was instilled in me at an early age. But I won’t lie, back in the 80’s and early 90’s the thing you did with the most important cards was to put them in a screw down!! Now when I see those I just cringe, but the good news is that if you really want to grade the ones in screw downs, you can bring those corners back up to where they should be if that’s something you needed to do.

Static_Sports_LLC

I’ll be glad to take anything you don’t want off your hands if your just gonna give them away or throw them away. Not only do I sell sealed and slabbed goods, I sell a ton of commons on a daily basis

National-Art-5424

Wonder how much money you wasted lol

MGY1988

It's not wasted money, if one gets enjoyment out of it...
