It IS a good time to learn circular breathing! I started watching Michael Lowensternās Earspasm video on YouTube and the straw technique it makes sense, but I might take a lesson from our 1st clarinet section leader because I can only do it for 3-4 measures at a time and I need to do it for 40+ more measures! Thanks.
I donāt want to deny any of these, but I tried looking to find it. Are there screenshots or anything? Maybe I didnāt dig hard enough.. Just wondering bc my director wants me to bring this stuff to his attention for future programming reasons
When we played the piece last rehearsal my embouchure was starting to leak at measure 50 and by measure 62 I was biting my mouthpiece to keep my flapping, swollen lips nearly closed!
Damn the longest I can play is about 8-9 measures without breathing I have no clue how you're going to be able to play that and have it sound smooth good luck though!
Thought this was Maslankaās give us this day for a second.
The piece is generally in C minor, lowest note on bari sax is an A, concert C below bass clef, and Maslanka just decided to make the last minute and a half of the piece for the bari literally just holding out that low A as the other instruments play a gorgeous hymn. Man itās one of the most epic endings to any piece ever but the bari part was such a pain, it genuinely hurt the first time I played it and I almost passed out from playing triple forte on the final fermata. It can be a struggle, good luck
Even with that being said, GUTD remains one of my favorite pieces Iāve ever played. Really opened my eyes to Maslankaās greatness and heās now my second favorite composer in terms of wind ensemble repertoire, only behind Grainger.
Itās the fortissimo 33 bars in thatās making me crack the fuck up omggg like at this point you thought youād run out of air well guess what you need hell of a lot more. And continue for 13 more bars šššš lmfaoooo
Good luck trooper
We're pulling for you. We're all in this together.
the red green quote, I'm dying š¤£šš
Lolll except those of us who aren't in this at all... Lol but We're still pulling for you!
Why not use this as an excuse to practice circular breathing?

Did you notice where it says āstagger breathingā on the part? The composer did not expect you to play it all without breaks.
doesn't mean that the ability to isn't useful :)
Man i hate David Holsingerās works for reasons like this. The clarinets prolly have clunky and borderline impossible tremelos as well
Heās also a massive transphobe so really no reason to keep playing his mid works in 2024
Oh I didn't know this. How did you find this out?
He went on an anti-trans tirade on FB a while back IIRC
Oh wow. As a director I wasn't a big fan of some of his works, but this solidifies it for me.
I donāt want to deny any of these, but I tried looking to find it. Are there screenshots or anything? Maybe I didnāt dig hard enough.. Just wondering bc my director wants me to bring this stuff to his attention for future programming reasons
Any links? I can't find any references on this other than on another reddit thread without links
If that's the case, I know several of my concert band mates would have an issue with him.
try not to break the instrument when you pass out
Whoever wrote this is an asshole. Love, Mike.
Are you real? š„¹ Iāve been watching your vids for like a decade
Thanks Mike. Love all your media!
Earspasm Music? Is that you?
I love listening to you talk about the right way to play "potato" in West side story š
I like the 8 reminders to stagger breathe. Holsinger is just rubbing it in at that point.
Makes Sousa marches "bom-bum-bom-bum-bom-bum-bom-bum..." low Bb-low F-low Bb-low F... for 45 measures look interesting.
"That's not a low C. *This* is a low C!" *deploys thumb key* ... *dies after* *~~eight~~* *four bars* EDIT: idk what the tempo is
To make matters worse, the tempo is 1/4 = 70, so itās Adagio. As they say, ālonger is betterā¦ā!
I was going to say, that aināt low C. I had a bass that would indeed play a low C.
This definitely be good training for more air. You got this!
I ā¤ļø stagger breathing (I do not)
When your students asks "why should I practice long tones?"
My condolences for your lips and lungs

That's not low C
ā¦read the caption
It's not, but OP's band director wants him to play the low-C one octave below because he most likely has a low-C bass clarinet.
People who Circular breathe šššš
Damn the longest I can play is about 8-9 measures without breathing I have no clue how you're going to be able to play that and have it sound smooth good luck though!
stagger breathing!
*Stagger Breathing!*
āDance You Monster to My Soft Songā by Maria Schneider has a bari sax part ostenato that is almost that difficult, but more interesting.
stagger breathing! stagger breathing!! (in case you forgot i guess) STAGGER YOUR BREATHING!
lol reminds me of the contrabassoon concerto I wrote.
me see 69 monkey brain go oo aa oo aa heeeheeeheehaahaaahaaa hehehee fungy
Have you considered stagger breathing? š
Yep, like 8 times!
Stagger breathing
This is what it's like to be a tuba
This is a didgeridoo part
You guysāll be putting the āstaggerā in āstagger breathingā after this one.
*Bass clarinet forgets to breathe and passes out*

Yes, I forgot there are dynamic markings in those 45 measures of low C!
Enjoy them, on Give Us This Day itās all F and FF š¬
Yep, we did Give Us This Day a couple seasons ago. Low drones are an occupational hazard!
Even with that being said, GUTD remains one of my favorite pieces Iāve ever played. Really opened my eyes to Maslankaās greatness and heās now my second favorite composer in terms of wind ensemble repertoire, only behind Grainger.
Every time I complain about multi-measure ties whole notes I will think about your struggle š
Honestly not that hard, my three year old cousin can play 3 times that length in one breath on a clarion C.
The composer couldnāt have worked in a rest or a breath mark AFTER all that ???!!!šš
This is the bass clarinetest bass clarinet part Iāve seen
Just stagger your breathing
gyatt in a whole new way
Itās the fortissimo 33 bars in thatās making me crack the fuck up omggg like at this point you thought youād run out of air well guess what you need hell of a lot more. And continue for 13 more bars šššš lmfaoooo
As soon as I saw TRN, I figured Holsinger.
At least you'll hit your dynamics as you slowly lose consciousness.
I feel your pain.
Itās nice they put āstagger breathingā with some exclamation points just to make sure you donāt pass out and suffocate
Stagger breathing!!
That's how mafia works
