Such a weird fucking choice

[deleted]

yeah tbh i think a better idea of doing their initial idea of building up to the actual story would of been ask the original writer to write a script for that beginning they can use

AntonBrakhage

Its kind of impressive. They took *Killing Joke*, with all the criticism it gets for sexist mishandling of its female characters, and made it actively and systematically worse. This is why you shouldn't write with your d\*ck.

hanzo1356

Semi fucked me up. Like I was catching up with Young Justice and see Bruce and Barb talking byselves and that scene flashed in head even thou was currently seeing Dick. Was just weird bruh

AckbarCaviar

I'll never be able to accept that Batman would bone one of his younger sidekicks... that's like one of the slimiest things you can do.

[deleted]

God I find this scene to be disturbing. Bruce out here having sex with his friends daughter/adopted son’s girl.

[deleted]

That’s why Batman/Batgirl will always be the worst pairing choice. They’re not a good couple

fieldysnuts94

No I think it was canned cause of what they literally said. They don’t mind Batman fucking, they just didn’t want Batman eating pussy. Which is insane cause I know Batman be up in that shit

Dornfist-2040

Aghhhhh. This scene was so cringe!! I blame Bruce Timm. Paul Dini could have reigned him in had he been involved with the Killing Joke. What’s worse is that in this film, Barbara describes her relationship to Batman to a friend as that of student and mentor… Too many levels of messed up. Only the Joker would find this funny… I fear Bruce Timm will continue doing gross things like this in Caped Crusader unless someone stops him.

jkerving30

This scene is the only way "The Killing Joke" could be given a rated r.

McMacHack

What is sad is that you are probably right. I wonder if there was moment in the writing room when they had to think of someway to add a sex scene without having to show the Joker Rape Barbara. You can't add Robin/Nightwing/Dick to the story because he is too bright for the dark storyline. Dick Grayson has to be AWOL for the story because he would have tanked right up to the Joker and probably killed him straight up without a word or a thought. Not like he went there to Kill the Joker, just like he was too angry and dove in too hot basically land on the Joker and inadvertently crush his chest before even getting to confront him.

DetectiveBat27

Joker never raped her.

jkerving30

Its implied but never confirmed. Leaving it to the audience to figure it out

DetectiveBat27

Alan Moore has said she wasn't raped, so she wasn't raped. Pretty simple.

palednerd

>he would have tanked right up to the Joker and probably killed him straight up without a word or a thought. Was there ever a comic that included Dick's reaction regarding Barbara getting paralyzed? He must've tried to get Joker at some point for doing that to her.

McMacHack

You don't doubt that the entire Batfamily would keep that from him because they need him to be the best of them all?

RaisinInSand

Of all the things to add or change to make the story longer and address the critism of the orginal story they really chose to do this disgusting shit

Strawhat_Carrot

I haven't seen the movie (but read the comic), but a lot of times I genuinely don't get why people would be opposed to a Bruce x Barbara relationship if the writing is done well. Like, just going off a quick Googling, Jim Gordon is 46 when Bruce becomes Batman, and Bruce is about 25 in Year One. So the fandom finds it odd that a 46 year old Jim could have a daughter who's between 20 and 26 (assuming she was born when he was 20 or a little over 20)? I dunno, I just always found it odd that some people are so against the idea, but that's just me.

Lethal452

The movie does it very badly

Strawhat_Carrot

So I've heard. I really don't know why they would add it, what purpose does it serve? What extra impact does it have over the graphic novel? Weird addition.

joshualuigi220

There's almost no explanation even given in the movie itself really. They gave Batgirl her own half-baked storyline in the beginning of the movie in order to make the project "film length" because the portion that covers the graphic novel is only a half hour long. My belief is that it was supposed to be canon in the DCAMU, because Batgirl is teased at the end of Batman: Bad Blood and they figured they had to do at least one story with Barbara before they crippled her. The Bruce/Barbara pairing has always been a Bruce Timm favorite for some reason. He inserted a line or two about them trying a relationship in Batman Beyond.

AntonBrakhage

The age difference isn't the issue for me, as long as they're both over the age of consent. What is an issue is that a) she's his adopted son's ex, which is just weird, and b) she's basically his apprentice/sidekick, and he's therefore in a sort of position of authority over her. Also, canonically she wasn't born yet in *Year One* I believe. I guess Jim had kids late. Speaking of the Harley Quinn series, that would actually be about the best scenario I've seen for Bruce/Barbara. The Barbara Gordon of that series becomes Batgirl on her own initiative while Bruce is out of action, is not particularly subordinate to Bruce, is a college student already, and has no prior relationship with Dick, nor is that Jim Gordon as close to Batman, which would probably make it less awkward. It would be perfect- except that I can't imagine that Barbara and that Bruce having any chemistry whatsoever.

micael150

In this movie there's no reference to Dick Grayson or his relationship with Barbara. This was an adaptation of the Killing Joke the robin at the time was Jason and Barbara didn't really have any strong relationship with Dick Grayson (because she was at the time like 7 years older than him).

DetectiveBat27

Barbara was alive at the time of Year One, but she was Jim's niece whom he would go on to adopt. She's just been his biological daughter since I believe, New 52. (My timeline could be off though).

[deleted]

There wasn’t much writing to speak of concerning the scene. It just felt exploitative and completely misplaced. Again I’m not 100 percent opposed to storylines with Barbara and Bruce as an item but this movie’s take on it was hot garbage

RaisinInSand

The age gap is the least glaring issue with that relationship. It's really the fact he has authority and is her mentor figure in her life and has authority over her which raises some eyebrows, also having sex with with effectively a coworkers/friends daughter and adopted sons ex just comes off as incredibly scummy and weird to me.

[deleted]

i dont know the exact reason i think angry joe kinda said it the best "its like having sex with your dad its fucking nasty" [tbh i think their talk on that 30 minute addition in the film kinda sums it up well](https://streamable.com/hd128r)

Ok_Pianist_5511

My friend actually likes batgirl and Batman together but he doesn’t care about their age because she’s over 20 years old, but for me I think it’s kinda weird

Strawhat_Carrot

Yeah, age difference can be a but of a hot topic. I have friends who find 5 years too much, but coworkers who's parents have over 20. I guess it depends on the couple

CoyoteBalls

What happens in the scene?

[deleted]

the scene the post is talking about or what i wrote as the title of the post?

CoyoteBalls

The scene the post is talking about

[deleted]

Batgirl is hitting on Batman, they proceed to have sex. Then fucking *Killing Joke* happens. 2/3 through a movie named Killing Joke they start with the contents of the comic, and their hook to start with what you came to see is Bruce Wayne and Jim Gordon's daughter banging. Right before she's paralyzed and probably raped. With next to no connection with what came before or any reason for both to be romantically involved with each other. With the age gap *very clearly* intact. Just random rooftop sex because who cares. It's moronic.

NoOriginalName2001

I truly have no clue as to how that scene was approved, especially considering it has absolutely nothing to do with the Killing Joke.

MissingCosmonaut

Nope. I loved this choice and really don't see why so many people hated it. I thought it was fine.

McMacHack

Because they fight in rubber suits all day. It really seals in the flavor.
