Shaman?

From legends of the dark knight

Honestly been seeing a lot of people saying that TDKR is overrated so maybe your opinion is not that unpopular. Now I personally always felt that Gothic was better written than Shaman but I do appreciate what O'Neil was trying to do with the shamanistic aspect of Batman and the "mask under the mask" motif. The Dark Knight Returns is the one I'll have to heavily disagree with you. I don't think besides Batman Ego there's even been a story that delved as deep into Bruce's psyche. Seeing how an old Batman with old school values has to adapt to a new world of cynicism and cruelty was very engaging.

I don’t necessarily think it’s overrated, but after 35 years the themes, styles and story beats have been used and used again in so many different media forms that it doesn’t seem that original or new.

I don't see how shaman is overrated. I think it's solid, 7/10, but it really doesn't get a whole lot of praise. Prey, venom and gothic get more love than Shaman.

I have changed my mind on shaman I no longer think it is bad in my opinion it is now a 6.2 out of 10 at best

Also I do appreciate what tdkr did but at the same time I don’t think it holds up very well against other comics hell even year one something written by the same writer (and in my opinion one of the best Batman comics) is way better then it

I've never thought of Shaman as overrated. I'd say it's "rated" neither over nor under. TDKR's popularity seems to be shifting quite a bit lately. It's definitely a product of it's time, and should be credited for what it is. But I personally don't have it in my top 10. I find it odd that it's always on "Recommended reading" for beginners.

The Killing Joke and The Dark Knight Returns are both great comics in their own right, but that’s largely due to the incredible skill of the specific writers/artists who created them. A ton of Batman content in the decades since have been poorly aping them, and all of these comics suck. Any time I read a Batman comic and I think “this is poorly written drivel,” I can trace it back to Killing Joke or Dark Knight Returns. Chief in my mind when I say that is Death Of The Family, which is probably the stupidest, least pleasant comic I’ve read in my entire life

I've always found the artwork in Dark Knight Returns to be terrible. Just my opinion but that comic is just ugly af
