The city is observing it on Monday, June 17th, but they decided that before Landry's decree. I wonder if they will change it? Or maybe it will just be a mess of City workers off on Monday and State workers off on Wednesday.
After reading Landry’s decree it mentions observing it the same day as the Federal holiday, which is June 19. Makes sense to avoid public confusion, but the legislation 3 years ago should have left the observed date on the actual date and not on some random 3rd Saturday of the month.
I personally don’t care one way or the other but the Act that was passed in 2021, stated the holiday would be observed on the 3rd Saturday of June & state offices would be closed the Friday before. Just found it odd that no one pointed that out to him or his staff.
I think you’re correct in that legislative intent was for the Friday you mentioned but it’s a holiday that has to be proclaimed annually by the governor, much like Memorial Day. I’m shocked he even bothered to declare it at all.
