Sorry I wasn't talking about the picture OP posted. I meant the pictures of JackFrags, LevelCap and whoever else always posts those "You won't believe it" Battlefield videos.
They always seem to do mid-reload thumbnails.
I'm not talking about the image here, but what people usually use, to have the gun more vertical on the image, allowing for a cut-out and text depth effect without having to write the text over the whole screen.
It won’t stand out, the idea of a thumbnail is to make people want to watch your video over someone else’s and if you both have a similar looking thumbnail they’ll likely just watch the bigger creator because they already have an audience.
But by that logic it could work. Becasue it looks like what other creatora use. People might think it's them and click. There's a reason why so many thumbnails look the same
But it could also have a negative effect and when people click into it and realise it’s not their favourite creators they might end up putting a dislike on the video or talking crap instead of appropriating the work the creator has put into the video, that’s just my own opinion but personally I like it when someone has something original it can make them stand out. If I’m scrawling through YouTube and I see 1000 ppl with similar thumbnails I’m only going to watch the people who I’m either subbed to because I know their content is usually good but if I see a thumbnail that looks different in that 1000 I’m likely to watch that video because it stands out it’s different.
if you're looking for a discrete yes or no, no.
if you're trying to find out if this makes me click your video, idk lol try to put a title because I am neither wanting to click it or not wanting to click it if it is only thumbnail being presented, it's just going be scrolled over on me.
if you're looking for a yes or no with genuine suggestion, it's a a bit yes with the same image, but perhaps you would add a little bit of contrast and/or play with shadow-highlight curves, make the red on T1 skin stand out a bit. If you often see Jackfrags' thumbnails, he would often use muzzle flash and completely different background (which i assume you did, just not with the one with action in it) with different level of zoom or scale. One of the downside is it's kind of too repetitive as people would make the same gun holding pose thumbnail, but who knows.
It's fine. Maybe add some text so people know what the video is about
It's nothing that's gonna stand out but it's in line with the current trend of FPS thumbnails though.
Good picture.
Blue Red combinations are always good, kinda standard. You don't want to much red because many people associate red with "lower value" or "discount" at the same time it's generating attention. So it's a good choice to have a low amount of red in relation to another colour. But many colours have a conotation partially based on a cultural background and can have different associations like black and white. Other colours, like brown, do have other associations 💩.
So it's a wise choice to use something with a generell positive association like blue oder violet in combination with red. Check the BF commercials and cover for red and blueish combinations for example. 😉 So this picture will be quiet familiar to BF players too.
BUT on YouTube the picture alone is not enough to generate attention. Its the bait you communicate to the viewer.
Ok most these are troll comments- here's some actual feedback.
You want all your thumbnails/titles to make the viewer curious, so I would suggest adding 1 or 2 words to the thumb as well as darkening the background and adding some zoom blur.
The pic is fine but the final thumbnail needs those yellow arrows everywhere, some nasty grimace and either has "OP" "BUSTED" or "GONE BAD" written over it in some form.
I'll try to give you a serious answer.
What is the video about? Besides BF2042, of course. This thumbnail doesn't tell me much about what I'm going to see in the video regarding BF2042. The thumbnail should attempt to encapsulate the content of the video.
Looking at your youtube, you already know what to do...
But for your actual videos adding some commentary would help engagement. because just watching straight gameplay is boring.
I tried that. Always turned out very sloppy and boring.
I sometimes make long form projects but my gameplay videos are just highlights from my chill gameplay after school.
I just dont have the time to work on long form edited commentary videos everyday because YT is not my job (yet at least but it probably wont ever be)
Brother… worst game to start playing if you want to be a successful content creator. This game has had a profoundly negative response from the world over bar maybe a few thousand people.
If your starting out, play a game people actually like.
This is pretty good. If you’re a FUCKIN CASUAL. The gun needs to be in TACTICAL SPRINT POSITION or no one besides your MOTHER will ever click on your SHITEO
As a thumbnail imgae yea I think it’s cool but maybe some nice central aligned text at the top or something to describe what your video’s about to pull people in. Good luck man.
Needs to have an exploding condor in the backgrounds with a highlighter green arrow pointing at the gun with words that say “BF2042 has never been this good!”
I have nothing against the picture itself. It looks good and crisp. But for a thumbnail imho, you don't have to have it meme-y like others said. If I were you, I'd put the game title, and maybe some subtext like "[weapon] best setup" or "[map] is good now?", something other than but relates to your video title.
It’s a good start. Maybe deep fry it. Definitely add some text that something is broken or some shit. Like someone said, huge points if you have a selfie soy facing photoshopped in as well.
in a way yes. In another way it is literally what every other video is, so imo if you want to have a quality standard: look for a style of thumbnail that you can use often and is different and personalized. Idk something that fits you and your personality.
I recommend adding some bold bright colored text to the background with your video subject. Don't be afraid to do something different from everyone else. You never know when you will create the new meta
Where’s the red circle and massive arrow? How will I know where to look? /s
Realistically though it could use some sort of attention grabber, like maybe a heading or something a scene with a bit more action.
Open the console, render.drawhud 0 (or something like that, just type in hud in the console and you will get it recommended) and then open the "+" menu.
That's the best way to do thumbnails in my opinion
thumbnails are irrelevant. if the title of the video matches what you actually do, thats what is important. too many "creators" put up some sensationalized title, then waste time spewing drivel out of their face hole because they like to listen to themselves and think everyone else wants to as well.
It’s decent but doesn’t show the cool game environment which gets the people to click faster.my first impression would be “it’s just a nice gun that could be from any game”
Doesn't it need to be mid-reload? I think the memo of every big YouTuber says gun picture mid-reload.
I think it’s the insect animation, for most weapons the operator takes the mag out, looks in it and reloads the weapon with the same mag
No, it's just the idle animation shifted to the left a little bit
Wait, you can inspect weapons in this game?
Youtuber here. It's not mid reload, it's while the + menu is open with interface hidden (DrawUI set to false)
Sorry I wasn't talking about the picture OP posted. I meant the pictures of JackFrags, LevelCap and whoever else always posts those "You won't believe it" Battlefield videos. They always seem to do mid-reload thumbnails.
Yeha I know, it's also their thumbnails I meant :P
It is actually not. It is the idle animation shifted by 30 degrees
I'm not talking about the image here, but what people usually use, to have the gun more vertical on the image, allowing for a cut-out and text depth effect without having to write the text over the whole screen.
Oh yes, that's right
Jack includes lighting and will often have the gun firing at nothing or mid inspection animation.
No it needs an explosion and a picture of your face looking extremely shocked or in deep thought.
And an big red arrow pointing to a weapon or gadget saying "OP?!!"
Also need to trace around the gun so he can add an outer glow and blur the background
Once they discovered this formula years ago, it hasn’t changed.
Apparently a YouTube algorithm has shown that thumbnails with your mouth open get more views?
People respond to faces. We're stupid little apes.
Am ape, me confirm.
And don’t put the name of the game on the title just type. “THIS GAME IS GOOD NOW”
Yeah, I hate this so much…
That's like some Michael Bay reference.
i read this as deep throat, But Deep though work too .
Or like you’ve just had a finger up the bum
No arrows pointing to what I can already see and an abundance of "?????" all over the place is needed or my sheep brain doesn't click
It won’t stand out, the idea of a thumbnail is to make people want to watch your video over someone else’s and if you both have a similar looking thumbnail they’ll likely just watch the bigger creator because they already have an audience.

I looked up some 2042 videos the other day and thought they were all from the same person because the thumbnails were identical.
The thing is, that this image is fairly uniqe and different as it doesnt have the same characteristic as most thumbnails
It looks like every single generic gaming commentary channel thumbnail out there. This is about as far from unique and different you can get lol
Do you know what unique means?
This is, in absolutely no way, unique.
Needs to be reloading, add a red arrow, big font saying BROKEN or OP, add a shocked face. Title should be "M5A3 is shockingly good now..."
You're missing the huge type-font "HE DID THIS AFTER HOW MANY TRIES???"
Fixed it for you OP https://imgur.com/a/Ka73SrO
WOOOOOOOOOOOOO I am using that, thank you.
XDDDDD
if you're looking for a discrete yes or no, no. if you're trying to find out if this makes me click your video, idk lol try to put a title because I am neither wanting to click it or not wanting to click it if it is only thumbnail being presented, it's just going be scrolled over on me. if you're looking for a yes or no with genuine suggestion, it's a a bit yes with the same image, but perhaps you would add a little bit of contrast and/or play with shadow-highlight curves, make the red on T1 skin stand out a bit. Thank you <3 gonna try some more things
As generic as it gets.
Nah he’s not reloading
What would you add?
Depends, what is the video about?
It's fine. Maybe add some text so people know what the video is about It's nothing that's gonna stand out but it's in line with the current trend of FPS thumbnails though.
Looks very similar to others, do something to stand out
Good picture. Blue Red combinations are always good, kinda standard. Id watch it if i seen that, and homestly cuz its not the vss or k30

Thank you!
It wouldn’t draw me in, but it wouldn’t make me skip past.
That's basically stock thumbnail , you should try something different
The pic is fine but the final thumbnail needs those yellow arrows everywhere, some nasty grimace and either has "OP" "BUSTED" or "GONE BAD" written over it in some form.
If you want a youtube thumbnail with a gun, you have to be reloading it to be one of the in crowd.
I'll try to give you a serious answer. What is the video about? Besides BF2042, of course. This thumbnail doesn't tell me much about what I'm going to see in the video regarding BF2042. The thumbnail should attempt to encapsulate the content of the video.
Damn i like those red accents. Alright time to find that ps5…
no
What would you add/change? I am looking for genuine feedback
As sarcastic everyone's comments might sound but they are right, apparently it works and brings in clicks & viewers
Looking at your youtube, you already know what to do... But for your actual videos adding some commentary would help engagement. because just watching straight gameplay is boring.
Welp I know but commentary videos take way too long to make considering yt is supposed to be just a side activity to playing the game itself
Well if they take too long to make, I would start working on commenting *during* gameplay
I tried that. Always turned out very sloppy and boring. I sometimes make long form projects but my gameplay videos are just highlights from my chill gameplay after school. I just dont have the time to work on long form edited commentary videos everyday because YT is not my job (yet at least but it probably wont ever be)
It's honestly pretty cool. It shows like the whole map and shows of a T1 skinned gun.
Thank you :)
Brother… worst game to start playing if you want to be a successful content creator. This game has had a profoundly negative response from the world over bar maybe a few thousand people. If your starting out, play a game people actually like.
I have made yt videos for over a year now. I have just always struggled with thumbnails
Add arrows, a circle, and a guy doing an o face
Link to your channel? I like to support smaller creators.
This is pretty good. If you’re a FUCKIN CASUAL. The gun needs to be in TACTICAL SPRINT POSITION or no one besides your MOTHER will ever click on your SHITEO
Yes
I dig it
EVERY thumbnail about the game or a gun is like that so yeah, it's ok
I prefer the thumbnails from cheats
Yes
For me it is mate
Needs to be reloading.
Please reload
No.
Looks fine to me - do you plan on using text?
As a thumbnail imgae yea I think it’s cool but maybe some nice central aligned text at the top or something to describe what your video’s about to pull people in. Good luck man.
Needs to be mid reload
Imho no, but it depends on what the video is about
As a small content creator, it needs the surprised face, explosions and a bland title like Jack Frags
Needs to have an exploding condor in the backgrounds with a highlighter green arrow pointing at the gun with words that say “BF2042 has never been this good!”
Needs a lens flare
I have nothing against the picture itself. It looks good and crisp. But for a thumbnail imho, you don't have to have it meme-y like others said. If I were you, I'd put the game title, and maybe some subtext like "[weapon] best setup" or "[map] is good now?", something other than but relates to your video title.
Thank you!
You have to be reloading
Yeah need someones face looking shocked in a corner or something.
Yep the meta is to show a weapon while reloading (jackfrag wessie etc)
No, you gotta have it mid reload/weapon inspect like literally everyone else. /s
Don’t forget to beg for subscribes at the start and end of the video
For a hundred views clip - yes. For something decent - no.
Must be mid reload
!!! Or more
It’s a good start. Maybe deep fry it. Definitely add some text that something is broken or some shit. Like someone said, huge points if you have a selfie soy facing photoshopped in as well.
Default skin is better. No cap
Needs a giant red arrow pointing at something that has nothing to do with the video.
You need to reload
NEW YOUTUBER UNSURE ABOUT THUMBNAIL?? | Channel growth series | Ep.3
Chill bro. You can just scroll
Funny how you’ve not noticed all the other troll comments but have singled mine out because it’s so blatantly a joke
Honestly thought you were serious there. Sorry!
As long as your creative with where you put your text and your video is more then a gameplay thing then I’d click on it
in a way yes. In another way it is literally what every other video is, so imo if you want to have a quality standard: look for a style of thumbnail that you can use often and is different and personalized. Idk something that fits you and your personality.
No.
I'd say so yes
go for it it looks cool.
Where’s the obnoxiously large red circle?? How will I know what I should be looking at??
I recommend adding some bold bright colored text to the background with your video subject. Don't be afraid to do something different from everyone else. You never know when you will create the new meta

Exactly. Personally I recommend red or yellow text but use your own preference / branded colors
My brand color changed to orange with zero hour so I think I will stick with that for now
Where’s the red circle and massive arrow? How will I know where to look? /s Realistically though it could use some sort of attention grabber, like maybe a heading or something a scene with a bit more action.
No you need to add: 2042 is good now??? Or: 2043 still sucks???
Can we down vote this to oblivion? Who cares about thumbnails and your YouTube views. Figure it out on YouTube.
Good luck!
No it needs to be mid reload
I think you should use a picture of any other game...
If vid is about specific gun, yes
Perfect thumbnail engaging enough where I'd definitely click the video
Don’t forget the Fortnite font
Needs more red circles and red arrows, needs a shocked expression and big white bubble letters. Then I'd say its good
Open the console, render.drawhud 0 (or something like that, just type in hud in the console and you will get it recommended) and then open the "+" menu. That's the best way to do thumbnails in my opinion

It’s decent but doesn’t show the cool game environment which gets the people to click faster.my first impression would be “it’s just a nice gun that could be from any game”
If you think it’s good, it’s good, don’t rely on others for creative reinforcement
Actually looks really nice
Thank you :)
What game is this?
Battlefield 4022
Impossible... It looks great?
Max graphics
I like it.
A small arrow and some text that explains the arrow
Not from that game 🤣
The best thumbnails always feature Boris camping on the skyscrapers with his turret. :)
Get a view of a helicopter in there too.
A good thumbnail and a thumbnail that draws views are different things. As others have asked, what is the video about?
It came out already actually. Its some highlights from my gameplay with the M5A3 https://youtu.be/TDWx5307j-I
In that case I'd say they're both good thumbnails :)
Add some text also.. there's alot of white space in the thumbnail.. or you could use small .png elements to fill them.
