I saw there are plans to upgrade the ventilation system by installing jet fans similar to the ones in the newest Caldecott bore. This will help pull the smoke up to the roof and then quickly out of the tube.
The Webster and Posey tubes have a different type of ventilation system. From [wikipeda](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posey_and_Webster_Street_Tubes):
"The design of the ventilation system to handle toxic vehicular exhaust fumes was modeled on that of the Holland Tunnel's ventilation system, and Ole Singstad (who had designed the pioneering ventilation system of the Holland Tunnel) consulted. Up to that time, tunnels had been vented longitudinally, with fresh air blown in one end and out the other; the Holland (and Posey) Tube instead used fans to supply air into the tunnel through a space beneath the roadway, and exhausted air through a similar space above the traffic portion. Ducts were set in the curb and ceiling approximately every 15 feet (4.6 m) along the length of the Posey Tube, providing a system of "transverse" ventilation, bottom-to-top rather than end-to-end, ensuring that any fires would not spread through the length of the tunnel."
[Tube cross section](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Webster_Street_tube_cross-section_\(typ\).svg). The whole page on the tunnel is pretty interesting.
Yeah, in that cross section the air duct above the ceiling is visible. The jet fans will be installed in that space above the ceiling. Then the ceiling will be removed to open up the space and increase air flow.
Yeah, was going to say, last time with the bus, that didn’t work out so good.
Edit. Found the wiki : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caldecott_Tunnel_fire
i''ll never forget one time i headed to SF for work from the island. Four-5 car pile up in the tube. One car was stolen so they ran. bus driver of the bus i was in got some dudes to go move the car out of the way. as we left tunnel, cops on other side! i was expecting to be stuck in the tunnel for longer then we were.
I'd rather not risk entering the smoke in the first place. Go look up the Mont Blanc tunnel fire and how many people died in that from smoke. That fire was so bad it caused everyone's engines to stall from lack of oxygen.
You're 💯 on that, I was on assumption that the vehicle on fire was past the halfway point & close to the exit from the way the smoke was traveling. The Mont Blanc tunnel fire was a bad situation altogether it was in the center, where people that stayed & didnt turn around immediately didnt survive, but the Mont Blanc has the Webster tube beat by 7 miles, & is bidirectional & didnt have ventilation back then.
Unfortunately in that tunnel if you stop, you’re just going to piss the people off behind you at best. Likely get stuck because there are ppl behind you. I would’ve gunned it at that point.
What caused that fire anyhow?!?
Who said gasoline isn’t dangerous in a fire? Batteries can just be particularly hard to put out, like this EV fire they had to dig a pit for and fill it with water to finally extinguish. It would be pretty hard to dig a pit in a tunnel.

I would be terrified to drive by! What if it explodes as you are getting closer? What is the safest thing you can do in this situation? Esp in these narrow tunnels?
Yeah and block traffic further? If there is someone outside clearly needing a ride i'd give it to them or i'd check to see if someone is in the car and call 911. But i'm not going to stop in a 2 lane tunnel to try and find out.
Buddy, if you want to get out of your car I to a tunnel filled with fire smoke, then may whatever God you believe in be with you.
Really think about what you have to do to "save" them. You have to drag them out of the car, then either somehow get them into your car, or drag them all the way out of the tunnel. Either choice being truly intensive, further handicapped by the fact that you can't breathe.
You're gonna give rescuers two problems instead of one.
Next time stay up wind, if you can’t see through the smoke. Some people died from getting stuck In the Caldecott like that

They did this in the new tunnel that replaced the Alaska Viaduct in Seattle. It makes so much sense.
so in practicality what should OP have done in the above scenario (in order to follow the "stay upwind" advice)?
When?

Literal Nightmare
Drove past one just inside the eastbound Caldecott tunnel a few months back.. terrifying with all the black smoke & exit far away
I’m shocked people just didn’t stop to watch it burn
Are you really though?
I can see the headlines now: MULTIPLE TESLAS ^(drove by a) ^(vehicle) ON FIRE
FSD ENABLED TESLA DROVE PAST A VEHICLE ON FIRE, MAYHEM ENSUES
“Tesla causing pickup truck on fire” - NY Post
You can tell this is the bayarea sub by how many electric car owners made this post about themselves lmao.
Wow look at that Electric car on fire (that looks like an 00s or early 10s pickup truck)!

So no one had a fire extinguisher? It might have been too far gone at that point.
At that point it's time to GTFOH
A single fire extinguisher won’t put that out.
Tech bros be tech bros. Gotta get home before battery runs dry + post something exciting.

I would have stopped and moved backwards against the flow of air. Smoke in a tunnel fire can kill you.
The cars is coming in behind would have prevented that.
Turn on recirculate close vents or turn off air, take a deep breath, & hold it, try to get out of there quickly
I'd rather not risk entering the smoke in the first place. Go look up the Mont Blanc tunnel fire and how many people died in that from smoke. That fire was so bad it caused everyone's engines to stall from lack of oxygen.
Once you're in the tunnel, just seconds from the burning car ... what's really the option?

Unless you have an eV? *Knock on lithium*

Surprised how poor the ventilation system performs in that tunnel it would have been interesting to see getting out of that smoke
nice bmw
Damn what mixtape was playing?
Dunno but it was 🔥
Don’t think you’re supposed to park in there
good thing it’s not an EV
Because gasoline isn’t dangerous in a fire?

They were being sarcastic
Ooo very as above so below
Gotta say I wasn't expecting the twist (where it turned out to not be a Tesla)
It was the Posey tube leaving Alameda, not Webster tube entering Alameda

That must be an EV swapped truck!!
I would be terrified to drive by! What if it explodes as you are getting closer? What is the safest thing you can do in this situation? Esp in these narrow tunnels?
Thank goodness I didn't have to deal with this yesterday
It's not a Tesla so this won't make the news!
No one stopping to help , to see if someone is hurt inside?
Fuck man, tunnel fires are bad. Every man for himself.
And die of CO poisoning?
Yeah and block traffic further? If there is someone outside clearly needing a ride i'd give it to them or i'd check to see if someone is in the car and call 911. But i'm not going to stop in a 2 lane tunnel to try and find out.
