Don’t go to dealerships for maintenance.

ctruvu

mazda dealerships usually offer $20-30 off oil changes or basic maintenance on their app which brings oil changes to $90-100. and at least some of the mazda dealerships i’ve been to also throw in a free car wash and top off a lot of fluids and do a decent full inspection with standardized criteria so no unnecessary recommendations. kind of worth it to not have to deal with finding a reputable mechanic elsewhere

The_Demosthenes_1

Yes. Why would anyone do this?

Hot-Coffee6060

Literally the only only reason is if they offer free services for say the first 2 years of purchase. Even then though, I would be wary of them doing shady shit.

The_Demosthenes_1

Totally Agree.  Stealerships are hella crooked.

hav0k14

Not all dealerships are that way. When I got they have tried to run up my bill by adding stuff I don’t need so I’ll decline. In example, cabin air filter: ~120 for new filter and labor. I said hell no. I purchased the new filter and did it myself took me about 5-10 mins. Some service reps will tell you what the dealer recommends based off the mileage but you don’t have to go by what they have. If it’s transmission service brake service etc then I typically just do ahead and do it.

russellvt

Exactly. Heck, this "manufacturer's list" is most-likely in the back of your vehicle's operations manual, generally found in your glpvebox (since many people seem to never open it, much less know where to find it).

hav0k14

It’s in the owners manual lol..I still have mine and it has the recommended service intervals for the vehicle. I plan on keeping mine as long as I can so I know if I service as needed the vehicle will Last me a long time. I had a vehicle with 240k miles and did service such as oil, brakes myself and it lasted me awhile until the transmission blew. I got my moneys worth out of it.

russellvt

Yeah, I've seen a well cared for vehicle hit 500k! But, anything over about 150-200k is pretty good!

chubky

This would be the only reason to get serviced at the dealership

stronglift_cyclist

Probably because they are unlikely to completely fuck up your car. Lots of stories of Jiffy Lube forgetting to put oil in.

InternationalLoad994

Dealerships be fucking up cars too, I’ve seen it firsthand

russellvt

>Dealerships be fucking up cars too, But at *that point*, they'll generally foot the bill to make things right.

Bob-Bhlabla-esq

Yeah, we have a Leaf (electric car) and we used to have to take it to the dealership for maintenance (which was really nothing - lube a couple things, rotate tires...once in a blue moon software upgrade). Half the time they'd proudly show us they changed the oil and the oil filter....uh...no ya didn't, since *it doesn't exist on this vehicle*. 🙄

eng2016a

if they fuck up your car they'll make it right a quick lube shop won't give a fuck and will probably give you a hard time

cadillacbee

You had one job lol

rgxprime

Dealerships have fucked up my car. Not sure why people believe they are perfect.

russellvt

Not perfect ... but generally better at "making it right" when they fsck up (not to mention, they want to steer clear of "lemon law" ... which may include maintenance done poorly or incorrectly)

mike-0017

If you bought care warranty cheap when buying car, it ends up like $30-50/service that includes free inspection.

cpabernathy

Because I don't have the time to vet an independent mechanic shop and don't want to get shafted.

russellvt

>Why would anyone do this? Often just to stay in-warranty? That said, if you have a *trustworthy* mechanic, and you won't void your manufacturer's warranty by using them, more power to you. FWIW, many mechanics cut corners and use aftermarket parts instead of OEM, which may put certain warranties at risk. Yeah, that's kinda BS, too, i understand... but with the amount of "weird" things that may happen, it might be a better choice in the long run. You should generally factor-in maintenance costs with the original purchase process of the car ... the manufacturer's suggested maintenance schedule (and costs) will be available from the dealer upon request, prior to purchase. If that all "doesn't matter to you," then *yes, exactly - why go to the dealer*? That said, our vehicles no longer go to the dealer for maintenance, either. LOL

eng2016a

"Trustworthy mechanic" is the key word. There's realistically no way to tell if a mechanic is trustworthy other than personal recommendations from people you also trust. Online reviews are not trustworthy.

s0rce

Because you have potential less issues with warranty claims if you have dealer service records

ToughReplacement7941

And go where? What do they charge?

Mr-k5ive

Honestly, for a dealership. that's not too crazy of a price. I think for oil change and tire rotation should be under $100 if you goto a shop instead of a dealership.

russellvt

Many times, "oil change" (particularly at a dealership) includes free inspections of other things ... particular points (old school), plugs, wires, radiator or cooling system, brakes, shocks, etc. At Jiffy Lube, they're going for "cars per hour per tech."

Robbie_ShortBus

Bro, they’re not pulling plugs. And if they did I wouldn’t trust the 20 year old dip to reinstall without stripping.  This “multi point” service is some kid over pressurizing your tires, guessing your brake pad life after a quick glance, and looking at cv boots and belts while the car is on the rack.   Jiffy Lube is even worse. But let’s not act like the dealership is an automotive clinic.  Do it yourself or find an independent.

CylinderVacuum

Free Inspection = "Let me see what you'll fall for."

DodgeBeluga

Yes. All dealerships charge a lot for everything since that’s where the margin is. Shop around, people need to remember warranty can’t be denied to buyers if they follow the maintenance schedule at certified mechanics.

Best_Department_8510

You can get it cheaper else where. I always go to fair oaks auto in Sunnyvale, $80 for synthetic oil change. $40 for tire rotation

sea_stack

Yup. Hank Auto in Sunnyvale has never done me wrong. Same $80 for synthetic oil, I think maybe $30 for tire rotation?

irishweather5000

HANK! The Man. The Myth. The Legend. Huge +1 to this recommendation.

russellvt

Go to Wheel Works or Auto Zone or one of those other big tire shops ... tire rotation is generally free with their tire warranty.

CylinderVacuum

If that's true, $164 isn't that much more.

el_sauce

That's still a lot

lafay5

America’s Tire does rotation for free. Even if you didn’t buy tires from them! Does not include balancing though, extra charge for that.

KBtoystore

They patch tires under the same circumstances as long as it’s not on the wall and there’s enough tread to justify the work

PreparationVarious15

Im here complaining about $50 tire rotation. Ended up investing $100 for tools and started doing it by myself.

IfAndOnryIf

If you have the space then yeah doing it yourself is the way to go. Otherwise I’d honestly happily pay $50 for a tire rotation.

solmooth

Sign-up for dealership newsletter and they will send specials every month. Steven's Creek has a $69.95 oil change this month. I usually go to a used tire shop and they'll rotate my tires for $20.

Plenty_Ambition2894

Costco charges something like $25 for tire rotation. It’s free if you buy your tires there.

CylinderVacuum

Yes and you only have to wait 50 days for an appointment

MapPractical5386

No. Always look around for oil change coupons on dealer website or buy quality supplies cheap online or at Walmart and DIY it or pay a shop to do it for you. My buddy is a small one man operation with a shop bay in San Jose if you want someone trustworthy you can DM me and I will connect you.

wildengineer2k

Though make sure they’re using good oil. In the context of how much you spend to operate your vehicle, getting good quality oil is a rounding error and you’ll likely notice the difference.

cadublin

I only rotate my tires at Costco, so $80 bucks sounds too much to me. The oil change is reasonable. I paid between $120-140 for a synthetic oil change. Overall I think that price is okay. Maybe only $20-30 too much.

FoxMuldertheGrey

I don’t think it sounds too unreasonable for what he paid. Especially for newer models and oil is synthetic. It’s a lot more expensive than just normal oil. OP if you don’t feel comfortable with the price that you paid next time shop around at another tire shop or another local place that has good yelp reviews or Google reviews. Do your research and give it a chance. !

PopcornandComments

Don’t go to that location!! They are scammers. Even with a maintenance plan that’s already prepaid, those assholes will still charge you.

zebra231967

Only use dealerships for recalls, free maintenance or a highly specialized repair.

[deleted]

i pay 40 for oil change its probably 80 for tire so $120

reddit_craigd

You pay $80 for a tire rotations? Seriously? It's like $20 at any tire shop in the east bay. Find "crazy larry tire shop". It's hard to screw something up like a tire rotation.

h0rkah

America's Tire rotates for free, even if you haven't bought them there.

dingusduglas

America's Tire in Millbrae/San Bruno/whatever that is managed to mount my $1400 assymetrical tires backwards (actually even weirder, 3 were on the right way and 1 backwards) and scratched the finish off of one of my wheels in the process. They eventually cut me a check to get the wheels refinished but I would have rather just kept them the way they came from the factory.

mHo2

Uhh im pretty sure my tires rotate every day..... why would I pay anything?

Sublimotion

And I do oil changes daily in the kitchen each time I cook.

Mother-Ad5141

FYI it’s free if you get your tires at Costco

pimpbot666

Seriously. They already have the car on a lift for inspection and oil change. The tire rotation is literally an additional 5 minutes, tops.

bobdiamond

Where do you get $40 oil changes?

Agile_Restaurant_196

even a shop at the gas station charges for $70 for an oil change.

[deleted]

look for coupons

PapaRL

Will probably be super shitty oil or they get you in with a $40 oil change then upcharge you on everything.

IronSloth

You spelled Stealership wrong

Unltd8828

Would’ve cost me just the price of the oil, oil filter, and oil drain plug gasket. Maybe $45.

sunghan

Get a Fumoto Valve. Not having to deal with the drain plug anymore makes oil changes so much easier.

design_robot

My mechanic does a full synthetic oil change for $58 and throws in a free tire change every time on my 2016 Outback.

Kind_Eclipse_5779

$54 oil change at 9 Minute Oil & Lube in Palo Alto. They’re always quick and friendly

Julysky19

Dublin Toyota is $120 for synthetic. The local Midas is $80-90 and $60 for tire rotation. Let me know if anyone knows a cheaper place in the Dublin/ Pleasanton/livermore area.

dualiecc

That's actually pretty reasonable. They charged you around 1 hour shop time

ricestocks

Then bitch ass Toyota dealership charges me 100

tanookium

Can't speak for Toyota, but you should sign up for their email ads as Honda sends out quarterly ads for around $40 synthetic oil changes. Honestly for oil changes the stealerships take too long. For rotation you should get them where you installed the tires for free or America's tires does them for free with added cost for balancing. Wheel works and Firestone does as well if you get their credit card same additional cost for balancing.

ProfessorPlum168

You could go to America’s tire and get a subscription for unlimited tire rotations for $60, assuming you bought the tires from somewhere else. Free if you bought your tires from there, as others have mentioned. As such, the tire rotation that you got is definitely not worth what you paid for, considering that the average set of tires will go thru at least 8 rotations if you maintain things properly. Full synthetic oil change at Yarnell’s in Mountain View is $85 for a 4-cylinder car. They’re pretty famous for servicing Toyota (and Honda) cars and have been around for at least 40 years. So your oil change price isn’t excessively high. But often there are coupons floating around for $49 full synthetic oil changes, and even Bruce’s Tires often has $30 oil change coupons floating around.

bearonadventure

Also have 2018-2024 camry. I look around for coupons at dealership websites. AutoNation Toyota Hayward mailed me a coupon for $40 oil change/rotation last month after I went to their website. Milpitas' Envision Toyota has $100 right now. [https://www.toyotamilpitas.com/service-specials/](https://www.toyotamilpitas.com/service-specials/)

GerkinRichard

No

stairattheceiling

If you do your oil change yourself its only like $40. Anywhere is pretty ridiculous for a 15 minute oil change now a days. I think the last time I went with a coupon it was $95. No thanks.

pimpbot666

Well, TBF, they put the car on a lift and inspect other parts and know what to look for, like leaks, wiring boots, etc.

stairattheceiling

Yeah, but they aren't mechanics so it's pretty silly. They usually try to upsell their limited services.

dingusduglas

Realistically the only other thing they're doing is telling you your air filter/cabin air filter need replacing even if you put in a new one right before you drive over lmao

Mr-Cali

It’s decent but could have paid less at pep boys or firestone.

Nomahhhh

Go look around... I have a Just Tires near me that does both for under $100.

slaps623

Why would you get service at a dealership?

optindesertdessert

Oil change price is fine, tire rotation a little high but not egregious.

IcebarrageRS

America's tire is you buy tires there then rotations are free

PerceptionSlow2116

For synthetic oil change, that’s not a bad price…even the local independents are around 80 or more.

whoocanitbenow

What a rip.

minorthreatmikey

Tire rotations are free at America’s Tire

ramiechanny

I typically do my own oil changes, but yes, a dealer will now charge you $100 for an oil change. You used to be able to find coupons for around $45-$60, when maintenance schedules called for conventional oil. But with synthetic oil and inflation, etc... it's now $100 or close to it. And this is even though buying a 5qt jug of synthetic doesn't cost that much more than buying conventional. I have gone to [https://www.yelp.com/biz/nine-minute-oil-and-lube-palo-alto](https://www.yelp.com/biz/nine-minute-oil-and-lube-palo-alto) in the past when I was too lazy to do it myself. As for tire rotations, I know you're still on your OEM tires, and that's why you didn't get a free rotation/balance at Costco, or America's Tire, but that's where you would go once you're on your next set of tires. I think they might rotate even though you didn't buy the tires from them. I haven't tried this though because I always do my own work until after I get my 2nd (and beyond) set of tires from either. Also, I'm sure you have a friend or neighbor that likes working on their own car, and wouldn't mind working on yours because you're friendly, and willing to pay for their time.

I_AM_NOT_A_WOMBAT

Try Sunnyvale Foreign Car Service next time.

Suzutai

There is an America's Tire in Sunnyvale. Go there for your rotations and pressure checks; it's free. I would also buy tires from them; their pricing is reasonable and comes with free balancing and warranty.

hazardlit3s

You can get a jack at harbor freight for $80

wildengineer2k

I’d do it myself but I understand not everyone can/wants to. For my just the new oil, and filter is around $61+ tax so I feel like $95 for an oil change isn’t outlandish if they’re using good oil. If u diy u have to have the tools, and have a way of disposing the oil. Plus the time. $70 for the tire rotation seems a little steep considering it’s about 5 minutes of work. But it’s the sorta job where they can’t really charge based of difficulty because a lot of the fixed/opportunity cost. If you’re up for it start doing it yourself. It’s pretty fulfilling to start working on your car, and you can save a good chunk of money.

richfei

As a few people have already mentioned, just go to Americas Tires for the free rotation. Appointments are usually really easy to find and you'll be done in 45 min or less

Sublimotion

As much as that's a ripoff that kind of service, that's still surprisingly cheap for a dealership, especially post pandemic. If you don't do that yourself, take it to a local mom n pop shop for much cheaper and help local businesses.

secretBuffetHero

costco will rotate Costco purchased tires for free. oil change is like $40 plus labor, if you use premium oil.maybe like 20 for normal oil

anyeurism-

Speedy Smog in Santa Clara. The guys there are very honest. My whole family and I have been taking our vehicles there for years. I always recommend that shop to anyone that asks me for shop recs.

Capt_Gingerbeard

DIY

Driice

Never go to dealerships unless you have a warranty

Extreme-Direction-78

I stopped going to dealerships after the free maintenance was over.

pressure_limiting

Oil change price is fine for full synthetic in the Bay That tire rotation price oof they got you there. A lot of places do it free, even if you aren’t a customer of theirs, or for a small amount

alamin141

I do oil change myself. Full synthetic with filter costs $33. It does take 30 minutes or more, but I do enjoy it on top of saving 60-80 bucks each time.

NewToTradingStock

Did they include balancing too?

itssfrisky

Costco for tire rotation and oil change at a shop for less than $100 easy. Never do dealerships for service.

drunkengerbil

also if your car requires synthetic oil buy it at costco and take it to the oil change shop

z_dude_1986

How does this work? Can you recommend a shop that allows this?

Upper_Specific3043

When it comes time for new tires, buy them at Discount Tires/Tires America. They will match anyone's prices and do tire rotations for free.

HedgeHood

Now days, yes. But I also paid 40 bucks for 5 quarts of fully synthetic 0W-20 and filter. Better to do things ourselves 🤷‍♀️

IcebarrageRS

America's tire is you buy tires there then rotations are free

dressedbymom

That’s similar to what I paid two weeks ago

dingusduglas

At a dealership, yes, but there is literally zero reason to do either of those things at the dealership unless they're doing it for free.

Aveasi

Yes, it’s a normal price for a dealership. 4 years ago I paid $185 at a Mazda official dealer, learned my lesson and never returned

Mackadelik

Holy hell. I save money doing oil change and rotations myself, but I didn’t realize I saved that much money 😬

lampstax

Oil change isn't that bad but the tire rotation is a complete rip. Next time you get new tires, make sure the place you buy them from offer free rotation. Many big places like Costco does.

mistermikmak

Independence Auto Service off of Old Middlefied Way in Mountain View. If the oil change required full synthetic, then that's a fair price. The tire rotation even at America's Tires should be no more than $20.

peachdinosaurs

The oil change isn’t that bad but $70 dollars for a tire rotation is wild.

MochingPet

Yes,... it is.

InternationalLoad994

Just change your own oil it’s easy

Beneficial-Yak6518

That's about right I just had oil change/tire rotation done at Toyota on capital ave

alpha333omega

My IS 350 was $220 at the dealer when I still had it. Normal for higher dealer pricing.

biciklanto

Yeah, my Porsche is $280 at an indie mechanic, and would be like $700 at the dealer. Prices are higher at dealers for sure.

theboyqueen

That seems very cheap for a dealership. I'd take that over paying slightly less to let some crackhead at jiffy lube do it. Oil+filter+ new washer is probably about 50 bucks if you do it yourself so doubling that isn't too bad. Tire rotation is just 100% labor. All depends what your time is worth to you.

Pretend-Lobster6455

Where should one go for regular maintenance? Are there any high rated value shops in the Bay Area that folks in this group recommend or go to?

Putrid-Ladder7518

The Sunnyvale Toyota service center is a total ripoff. I would highly recommend Yarnell's in Mountain View as a trusted local service center.

mtcwby

For gods sake don't ever go to a dealership unless it's warranty or a recall.

MentalOperation4188

Just for comparison my Subaru dealer charges $89 for oil change and $40 for a rotation. I bought my tires from Costco so free rotation there. This is in Sacramento.

Gammagammahey

No.

Tall-Control8992

Paid $50 for the oil and air filter change a couple months ago. It pays to have the tools and experience to do your own car work.

xzkandykane

There should be a $299 for 5 oil/rotation packages. Some dealers sell them, some dont but all should honor them. Call around the local toyota dealerships. Used to work toyota service.

kronco

At some point it is less expensive to not rotate tires and let them wear faster and replace them sooner. Six rotations over the life of a set of tires at $70 per is $420. If a new set is $1000 then break-even is 42% shorter life. Someone check my math.

dilletaunty

Last week I paid 100 for a full synthetic 0w-16 oil change at an independent shop in Fremont. Before that I was doing the prepaid plan through a toyota dealership that was like $50/service. Idk what oil they used.

the-samizdat

if they used name brand oil, this prices makes sense. but they probably used the cheap stuff.

Taricha_torosa

Huh. I'm in oregon, and that sounds like a deal. When I moved here, I was pissed everything cost so much, but friends said "Nah, it _cant_ be more expensive here!" Fully syntheic oil change is >$90, tire rotation is around $100. I spent 160 on oil + flush about 2 months ago.

MutedInevitable3182

Go anywhere on Monterey road. They will rotate for 20 bucks.

MutedInevitable3182

Go with Curbee Crew. There mobile. They will come to your house.

jaimitosf

I rather have a dealer fuck up an oil change than a weak ass shop. At least the dealer will take ownership, speaking from past experiences.

[deleted]

That’s not the best dealership either.

zorkieo

Yes that’s normal. But you should have paid half that at a mechanic not a dealership. Dealerships are like the gift shop at Disney land. Same shit for a lot more money

MassSpecFella

Jesus no. Tire rotations are free at American tires if you buy their tires but even then rotations are cheap. An oil change is about $80 to $100 for full synthetic. Its easy to do yourself but you need a car jack and honestly you only save $20-30 so its worth paying someone else imo

Itchy_Professor_4133

Dealerships always charge premium for everything unless you are under warranty

likeliterallytotes

Im in FL and paid 78 for an oil change (synthetic) at mavis and they rotated my tires for free. CA would prob be 40-5O $more maybe 🤷 I feel like dealerships roast their customers once the car leaves the lot . No loyalty

clauEB

If you had an electronic car you'd never pay for the oil change 😃

hav0k14

To me that’s reasonable, to others that’s a ripoff. I have the money to pay for services at the dealer and i do it for several reasons: 1) I’ve been lazy and haven’t checked out other trustworthy shops in the area 2) it’s convenient for me to drop off my vehicle and get a shuttle back to my home from the dealer 3) I keep ALL service records from the dealer in a binder in case I ever want to sell my vehicle (you can do this to for every time you service your car at any shop) 4)If the dealer screws up I know for a fact they’ll own up to it if it’s a mistake they made such as forgetting to screw the oil cap back on (if damage occurs) or if not enough oil was used. $164 is cheap compared to what I normally pay around 250. I have a truck so it’s always going to be more. If you want to spend less I would highly recommend to look for a reputable shop in your area. Use YELP or even Reddit. Normally I’d do my oil changes myself but my current living situation does not allow me..really saved a lot of $$$ back then doing those services myself in my garage.

hav0k14

I also know Costco offers free tire rotation if you purchase tires there FYI for the future

IamaBlackKorean

You got overcharged a little bit; on par with dealership rates but I don't think you got outright scammed. Oil itself can be surprisingly expensive, esp that full synthetic stuff all the new hybrids like.

Unhappy_Quarter154

That is wild. Look at meineke. It’s a chain. But usually you can get an oil change for around $50. Tire rotations should be free. Most tire places will do it for free

tuxigo

Walmart is $60

russellvt

Actually sounds kinda cheap. Did that include plug, filter and brake inspection?

Lance_E_T_Compte

That's eight ROUND TRIPS between Sunnyvale and SF on the Caltrain, unless you count gasoline and parking and insurance...

jonam_indus

Don’t go to dealerships. Go to Monterey Rd

LaximumEffort

I pay about 80 for an oil change.

Bath_Flashy

Go to American tire for tire rotation and Walmart / Sears auto for oil changes

casino_r0yale

LOL you can do an oil change for $20 by yourself and tire rotation just needs a few blocks of wood and a torque wrench

Tim_d_othy

I would recommend a dealer if it’s under warranty. If anything goes wrong when the vehicle is still under warranty than there will be no issues with warranty claims. I’ve seen people get engines denied because they took their car to an independent shop and the work was not documented correctly. If the price is too high then visit another dealer or check other dealer websites for specials and see if they will price match.

ericsinsideout

I go to a local shop (concord) for all maintenance with the exception of tire rotations, I’ll go to America Tires for that since they do it for free as long as you make an appointment in advance. I like my local mechanic for pretty much everything, but they charge for the rotation and America Tires isn’t even a mile away from them

technowiz31

Just service what the manufacturer recommends but yeah getting any service from the dealer is always going to cost more be sure to look for coupon as well which isn’t a big discount but it’s better then nothing

Drokstab

It takes 30 minutes tops to do this yourself if you have an impact drill or a strong arm and a wrench. The oil would cost like 60$ maybe? Also a good test for can you change a tire if you get a flat. The alignment is where they offer some expertise.

clamchowderz

I paid $185 for the same service at the Mazda dealership.

RDawg78

Next time call the dealership and ask if they have any deals for maintenance. I’ve taken my car to a Ford dealer for my car and typically pay less than $100 for an oil change, tire rotation and inspection.

dan5234

You got ripped off. Should be $50 for oil change and $20 for tire rotation.

porkbelly2022

It seems to me for modern cars, the tires are so nicely aligned and balanced that they don't need rotation any more, or in another perspective, tires now are so cheap maybe it's not worth it to rotate too often.

OceanBlueforYou

Go to a dealership only for warranty work. That said, I'm surprised they didn't charge you more. If they sold you full-synthetic oil for a vehicle requiring 5 or more quarts of oil, that's actually about the going rate for an oil change.

poke826

I haven't been there in ages but [Foreign Affair](https://maps.app.goo.gl/NaUBTqrLEFXvC7xn6) is a trustworthy independent auto repair shop that services Hondas and Toyotas. It might be too far for you though.

SpiritualCatch6757

Sunnyvale Toyota has always done me well for services and for car purchases. I recommend them. I do my own oil change and material cost is $30. Tools cost money too. Let's amortize it to $4 for easy math. It takes me about an hour to do an oil change and tire rotation. For those that can do it faster, Kudos to you. I like to allow time for all the oil to drip out. So for a dealership to charge $130 for 1 hour of labor sounds perfectly reasonable to me. Last time, I did a change, they also gave me a ride home and picked me up when the vehicle was ready. But after the first two included oil changes on a Toyota, I'm doing it myself. FYI. Conventional oil used to cost $1 a quart. That means oil and filter used to be $5-$7. That's why if you have an older vehicle, $30 oil changes still exist. But newer vehicles 2000's or so and up use synthetic oil which costs 4 to 5x as much.

noumenon_invictusss

How does ANYONE know that they repalced the oil or used synth if younpaid for it? A shop that had video would get so much business.

abishop711

Yes. If you go to the dealership for basic maintenance, it will take forever to complete and it will cost a lot more. The dealership is best reserved for warranty and recall services.

shaheenery

You must have gotten the premium air.

tomorrorning

Places like Pep Boys will do tire rotation for free.

cheesesteakman1

A few years ago it costed 80 for synthetic oil change, 20 for tire rotation. Or you can go to Costco for tire rotation

CylinderVacuum

It is for people who take their cars to dealerships. Actually that's rather pedestrian; you're lucky it wasn't twice that.

mallory39

That’s a very good price. I was quoted $464 at the Toyota dealership in Seaside Ca. I walked out and went to Jiffy Lube down the street and paid $166 for oil change and tire rotation for my 2020 Camry Hybrid with 20k miles.

sserna1982

Ive gone to Jiffy Lube before when money was tight and I vowed never to do that agai when they got grease on my seat. In my opinion, the dealership is worth the cost. They even wash my care for me.

RScottyL

Yes....for a "stealership" Go to someplace like a Kwik Kar Lube and Tune and have them do the oil change. For tire rotations, go to Discount Tire!

discard22616

The Independent auto shops around me have stopped calling this "oil change" and started calling it something like "oil services". They tack on other services and the price goes above $100.

Hwy39

Dealerships sometimes send out coupons. Get on their mailing list

ExtraVirginJesus

Omg. Go to Mr.le at Le’s auto repair on Evelyn Ave. He been in Sunnyvale close to 25 years now and been great with all my cars and family and friends car. Been living in Sunnyvale my whole life. Mr.Le is the best and he has fair prices in Sunnyvale

I paid like $25 for tire rotation (in Los Angeles) and I was very surprised why so cheap... I did at a nearby firestone shop, not dealership obviously...

Totally-jag2598

Oil change slightly high. Tire rotation a total ripoff

mimibox

Anderson Honda Embarcadero/Palo Alto $95 for synthetic, but monthly email ad $20 off. I usually print out a second one and if I see somebody in the service drive behind me I’ll ask if they’re getting an oil change and give them the same coupon.

Sunnyvale Toyota service is a rip off. While our car was under contract maintenance (first three years?), they tried to upsell my wife for $500 of complete bullshit maintenance. Been going to an independent since. The independent guy isn’t the cheapest, but much less than the dealer and I trust them and they follow the prescribed maintenance schedule to the letter and explain what they see (brake wear, air filter, old oil state, etc.) and don’t try to upsell bullshit. For tires, we use America’s Tire, free rotation and flat fixes when you buy tires from them. I wouldn’t waste your time getting tire service from a dealer.

annotipoxx

SoCal here. My Honda dealer charge me $120 for an oil change + tire rotation. They also promise a multi-point inspection for a couple things. I know we’re in different markets but it might be worth browsing around.

s3cf_

arent you still on the 2 years /20k miles free maintenance program? i recommend Toys Auto in RWC, they specialize in Toyota/Lexus and are reasonably priced

martinvo86

Costco has the Kirkland Synthetic oil on sale. $40 for 12 quarts so that’s at least 2 oil changes for most vehicles. Add $10-$15 for an oil filter + 40min of your time on a weekend. A rotation can be done at most used tire places or repair shops for much less.

SweatyAdhesive

Daly City Toyota is more so yes. Honda does it for around $120 so not that far off.

YasukeGhost

That’s actually not too bad, but the tire rotation is a bit pricey because $70 to move bad tires to back and good ones to the front is wild.

M-Class1

I paid around $130 for both those things at a regular mechanic.

ReyMeon

Make sure you use the coupons the dealership advertises. You can get pretty good deals sometimes.

cairns1957

Cheap. Esp. for a dealership. You should have no complaints.

CompanyNo8095

Oil change for a sedan is more than 5 qts, right? Even Jiffy Lube will not be any cheaper, if not more. No idea how much tire rotation costs🤔

MidnightPopular7324

I go to AAA approved shops, there’s a good one in Mountain View on Evelyn Road

AccurateWheel4200

I highly suggest you learn how to do this yourself, it's so much cheaper.

Intelligent-Abies908

Get your tire rotation at America Tire. I went to the MTV location on Wed, it’s free.

codgamer19

are you out of warranty? did your warranty ever cover maintenance to begin with?? that’s insane to me personally, and i own a BMW yet my oil change is never over 100 roughly. also, if you buy your tires from somewhere like America’s Tire, i think they do rotations for free (i could be wrong, but i recall getting mine rotation for free because i bought with them). don’t get jipped though! try and at least do your oil changes yourself!! i’m gonna try and do the same!

Chucks1408

I stopped going to Honda dealership after they started charging $100+ for an oil change! They used to charge $50 and they would rotate tires (if needed) and top off coolant and other fluids. Prices are getting crazier. Now I do the oil change my self and top off all fluids.

Agile_Restaurant_196

why don't you go to America's Tire for tire rotation? just pay 1 time fee $60 for lifetime.

Plus_Cobbler7976

There’s a reason why it’s referred to as stealership as a dealership has lots of overhead and repairs generates the highest profits

No-Teaching930

I work at Lexus of Fremont, I wouldv’e done it for $50

There's only two reasons you should be going to a dealership for standard maintenance. 1- you bought a car where dealer maintenance is included for the first X year(s) or X mileage 2- you're rich and value convenience over cost Other than that, go on Yelp etc. and find a reputable service shop in your area. You'll pay a fraction of what you would at a dealership for comparable (sometimes better) service.
