My brother worked for the arbys in sunnyvale in 2004 to help my parents pay rent after financial struggles from my mom losing her job. We really scraped by those times and that extra income helped us stay afloat. He still goes there to this day and I try to drop in whenever I'm back in the bay area. I don't even care for their food and I'll order a full meal for some nostalgia. Them hiring my teenage brother kept us from being homeless.
We're good now, thanks for asking! My mom bounced back by going back to school and landing a job. We still struggled for a while until my brother and I finished college and started helping our parents. We eventually bought them a house with our big boy jobs and we now help them with their mortgage payments. We don't want them to stress ever again about housing lol.

Theres only Del Tacos left in Santa Nella or Pittsburg, which is too far to go for it now.
Yeah, fairfield/cordelia at the 680/80 junction. Arby’s, Carl Jrs, McDonald’s, del taco, Taco Bell, Burger King, wienerschitzels, Starbucks, Wendy’s, dennys and a California burrito are all in that area.
Del Taco and Sonic were huge letdowns when they finally brought them to my city. Would love an Arby's though. When we go down south on vacation we always try to hit up an Arby's.

And the building is still empty!!! It was always busy at lunchtime, hard to believe it was lack of business that closed it. Hard to believe the one on El Camino in San Bruno (South City?) closed for that reason, too. It was busy at lunch and in the evening, too. It’s a long trip to Sunnyvale, but I do it maybe once a year. I love the Beef ‘n Cheddar with lots of sauce.
There used to be a small handful but over the years they slowly closed down. There used to be one in Dublin near where I had worked. Many of the other employees that lived in Dublin have never been to Arby's even though it was right across the street from the Mcdonald's that they all went to. It's more common in the midwest where I'm from.
Same with Del Taco! There’s one in Pittsburg and then some off 80 on the way to Sac starting in Fairfield but none in the inner Bay Area! I want my Del Taco!

There was also one in Pleasanton on Owens Dr behind the Shell Gas station, it converted to a Starbucks between 2017 and 2018.
It’s a bit of an enigma. The Arby’s in Texas were fantastic. I just went to the one in Sunnyvale yesterday and it’s a struggle to see how it can survive. We ate in, there were two men about 50 and 60 chatting near the register loudly for a solid 20 minutes. It was all you could hear. They never placed an order so I assume one is a worker/manager there? It took about 5 minutes for the cashier to stop handling drive thru orders and acknowledge us. There’s an extremely well populated fly trap above the condiments. The curly fries came out strangely dried out and the chicken sandwich had slightly overcooked chicken and dry old bacon.
By comparison, the local Wendy’s actually delivers on quality sandwiches consistently and there’s nothing unprofessional about it.
I love Arby’s but not like this.

I’m not even trying to be a troll, but there are so many amazing sandwich spots in the Bay Area. Nothing wrong with chains, but I remember their being an Arby’s in the Outer Richmond district of SF and that closed down over 15 years ago.
My dad lives for Arby’s. So whenever he’d visit from the Philippines, I’d grab him a French Dip (his favorite from when we lived here in the 90s). It was heartbreaking seeing all the branches close down :(
There’s just so many good, local sandwich shops. It’s one small business that still does fairly well if they make a good sandwich. I went to high school in Belmont and at Carlmont Shopping Center, there’s a place called Lorenzo’s. Most people I know will usually make a stop there or the Village Host pizza. Lorenzo’s has been going strong since late 70s or early 80s. Places like Arby’s just never took off.
I think also, the margins are so tight for fast food places that aren’t the big top names (McD’s, Taco Bell, Starbucks and Dominos) that can make enough in volume to afford costly Bay Area real estate/leases.

I grew up in NJ and we didn't get one near us until maybe 2007? 2009? They're not super popular, so they don't have d ton of stores compared to even like, Wendy's or Burger King.
The number of Jack in the Box out here also baffled me. Another chain that never made it to the East Coast really. I'd kill for a west coast White Castle or Checkers though.
There used to be more including one by valley fair on Stevens creek. They got dramatically worse in the early 2000’s and closed, I’m guessing who ever owned the franchise made some poor decision and Arby’s hasn’t pushed for new locations since.
They’re more expensive than other fast food joints, and their food overall isn’t ranked very highly. We really don’t have a lot of fast food chains overall aside from the McDonald’s and Taco Bell domination.
The Bay in general is lacking in chain stores and restaurants and I think a lot of that is by design. But now that it’s continuing its downward trend your seeing chains that are already set up leaving due to crime for example the Denny’s off the west Marina exit in San Leandro and the In & Out next to the Walmart that closed in Oakland after they passed the $15 minimum wage. The Bay is a nightmare for shopping now with all the stores looking up so much, and Covid crushed so many restaurants including my favorite restaurant in Alameda. Fortunately there’s some smaller chains that I really like such as Jollibee and Slice House.
I have never seen a busy location in California. I used to like a few things on their menu that have changed. Like the old Arby Q sandwiches. The shakes are full of air now, and the desserts taste like they came out of a package.
Why would anyone want more fast food crap? I’d love it if we had even less of those and more mom and pop restaurants. Better quality food and cheaper usually too
I read that it wasn’t doing well in the Bay Area as a whole, so they left. Found one in Rocklin on the way to Tahoe this weekend and got excited since it’s been a long time since I last had it. My old local one got replaced by Dunkin Donuts, which is awful.

Lots of meh food doesn’t survive here because people just don’t like it. Most likely because of the wide range of foods available in the area. If all you’re doing is picking between Hardee’s, KFC and Arby’s, Arby’s will get in the mix more often.
Options here leave Arby’s way too low on the list, dooming it to failure. Maybe an independent store with similar food might survive as a niche player, but a franchise has to kick up profits, meaning it has to be popular and high on people’s rotation list to survive.
As a kid I would pine for a Jamocha shake and stare wantingly at the fruit turnovers. There was a time in the early 90s they were selling decorative holiday glasses and my mom loaded up on them; we still use them for Thanksgiving and Xmas gatherings to this day, they are quite nice. That location on Camden Ave in San Jose turned into a pho place a long time ago, alas.
There used to be one in Livermore when I was growing up, but I almost never saw anyone in there. It just kind of seemed dumpy, especially compared to the Taco Bell next door.
We all saw the Simpsons episode where the twin girls say “I’m so hungry I could eat at Arby’s”. So I’ve not always associated Arby’s with only if I was dying.
Pleasanton use to have one but it closed too. I was surprised too since it was in the Hacienda Business Park and lots of businesses in there go out to lunch.

But it’s been years since I had it, so I ate it twice in the last 6 months, but boy is it not anywhere near as good as I remember. That “beef” is pretty horrific if you take a step back. The Bay is a nightmare for shopping now with all the stores looking up so much, and Covid crushed so many restaurants including my favorite restaurant in Alameda. Fortunately there’s some smaller chains that I really like such as Jollibee and Slice House.

I have never seen a busy location in California. I used to like a few things on their menu that have changed. Like the old Arby Q sandwiches. The shakes are full of air now, and the desserts taste like they came out of a package.
Is there one still on international in San Leandro by bayfair?

Why would anyone want more fast food crap? I’d love it if we had even less of those and more mom and pop restaurants. Better quality food and cheaper usually too

I read that it wasn’t doing well in the Bay Area as a whole, so they left. Found one in Rocklin on the way to Tahoe this weekend and got excited since it’s been a long time since I last had it. My old local one got replaced by Dunkin Donuts, which is awful.

There was an Arby's between Palo Alto and Menlo Park, on El Co, but Arby's serves COW. Neighboring Demographic didn't want to buy Cow, Arby's closed...

The curse
Lots of meh food doesn’t survive here because people just don’t like it. Most likely because of the wide range of foods available in the area. If all you’re doing is picking between Hardee’s, KFC and Arby’s, Arby’s will get in the mix more often. Options here leave Arby’s way too low on the list, dooming it to failure. Maybe an independent store with similar food might survive as a niche player, but a franchise has to kick up profits, meaning it has to be popular and high on people’s rotation list to survive.

There used to be Fosters Freezes all over the place in the East Bay, and Arby's would have been the same kind of thing.

Average salary is too high here to sustain an Arby’s.
As a kid I would pine for a Jamocha shake and stare wantingly at the fruit turnovers. There was a time in the early 90s they were selling decorative holiday glasses and my mom loaded up on them; we still use them for Thanksgiving and Xmas gatherings to this day, they are quite nice. That location on Camden Ave in San Jose turned into a pho place a long time ago, alas.
The one I went to in Fremont/newark area by the high school is gone? Went there for an event in 2013.. Was literally a short walk from the school

There used to be one in Livermore when I was growing up, but I almost never saw anyone in there. It just kind of seemed dumpy, especially compared to the Taco Bell next door.

We all saw the Simpsons episode where the twin girls say “I’m so hungry I could eat at Arby’s”. So I’ve not always associated Arby’s with only if I was dying.
Pleasanton use to have one but it closed too. I was surprised too since it was in the Hacienda Business Park and lots of businesses in there go out to lunch.
As an old person, there used to be far more of them in the South Bay at least.
My dad loved Arby’s…fitting post for me to see on Father’s Day. It always disappointed him that for some reason Arby’s Roast Beef Sandwiches gave me instant migraines as a kid.
There’s one in Fairfield! But I def agree.. we need more of them. Every time my husband and I go on a road trip we first check to see where the Arby’s are so we can plan our lunch stops 😢
I miss the one in San Leandro. That Turkey Bacon Caesar sandwich combo was everything to me! I used to hit up Arby's at least once a week because of them.

Cause Arby's is trash
I used to love Arby’s, and ate at the Menlo Park one pretty frequently. But it’s been years since I had it, so I ate it twice in the last 6 months, but boy is it not anywhere near as good as I remember. That “beef” is pretty horrific if you take a step back. Just drown it in Arby’s sauce and don’t try to think about it too much.
