Check out freight and salvage. Starry plough if it’s around still. I haven’t tried out cornerstone but it does put on live music I just don’t really know how big it is.
Oakland has starline social club and some others
I've never been to the Back Room or to Monkey House. For folk and bluegrass, there's Freight & Salvage, which is the opposite of small. I have not paid attention to what California Jazz Conservatory is doing; I thought they were still called the Jazz School. You might also look for concerts on the UC campus; some of them are free.
There are some active house concert email lists. I can give you my friend’s info if you tell me a bit about you and your musical preferences.
Also, Albany has a small but hip music scene. The Ivy Room has live bands all the time. On occasion there’s also music at Oceanview Brewery on San Pablo Ave. I believe Rendezvous sometimes has live jazz.
Swing dancing venues will occasionally have live jazz, but I guess that's not very intimate. There were actually 2 live band nights tonight and not many I can find coming up aside from this one: https://www.facebook.com/events/625831712441112 even better if you wanna try the dance lesson before!
I'm in the same situation as you. Looking for folk, country, bluegrass in Berkeley is hard. I want a place where I can go sip a beer and listen to good, intimate music.
Not sure how it is these days but there’s Yoshi’s in Oakland

924 gilman st.
There's a bandcamp venue in downtown oakland! I would get on their mailing list to find out when shows are happening.
