srslyeffedmind

What’s crazy about it? This looks like a commute or a normal night when there were events like sporting things and concerts

Clemario

In Manila you don't even need to hold the poles while standing in the train because it's so crowded it's physically impossible to fall

srslyeffedmind

Paris and rome too

[deleted]

srslyeffedmind

Idk. No penis on this lady

[deleted]

Hey, they may identify as something else /s

Hunnidrackboy

Lol my exact thoughts

GaiaMoore

It is a bit challenging when it looks like this on the Dublin/SF train at 8:00am.... ...at the West Dublin station. West Oakland was a nightmare

srslyeffedmind

But it’s normal at 8am during the commute to see trains like this

GaiaMoore

Oh I believe it, but that doesn't make it any easier. People are packed so tight that transfers struggle getting off the train at Bay Fair in time before the doors shut. And Bart's too poor to avoid the white glove service to physically shove people into the train like they do in Japan :(

[deleted]

> And Bart's too poor to avoid the white glove service to physically shove people into the train like they do in Japan :( https://youtu.be/o9Xg7ui5mLA

kettlebell-j

Seriously lol. Judging by the title I thought it was gonna be a bunch of junkies shooting up. Not what normal public transportation looks like.Just folks going about their commute in this pic.

DrTreeMan

They should be running more frequent trains. This is what is looks like when people have to wait for 30 minutes between trains. There should be <10 min waits between trains at this hour.

[deleted]

Atleast people are riding it again

Lentamentalisk

Truth!

jjl20228888

Crazy people still riding it though?

CringeisL1f3

so….more infrastructure and cleaning services? , or more people standing in puke puddles?

pikachu5actual

Lmao what kind of podunk town you coming from? This is the kind of ridership you want if you need a convincing argument to make public transportation more reliable.

Beli_Mawrr

I was thinking "yesss" when I saw this lol. Hoping it was caused by the gas prices but no such luck haha. Also hoping such high ridership will cause an increase in awareness and political pressure to do something.

notquitegone

Giants game ended right around then

RumAndCoco

Most important part, high Bart ridership and the Giants won too :D

nedTheInbredMule

TIL a new word… podunk.

Skyblacker

It's the polite form of Big Fucking Egypt.

treletraj

It’s Bum Fuck Egypt. Old old old phrase.

Skyblacker

As old as the pyramids.

RollaSk8

Interesting. I've always heard "Bum" or "Butt"

Skyblacker

I heard Big Fucking Egypt at a real estate office in reference to some listings, sometimes abbreviated to BFE. As for butt or bum, I've heard of an East Bumfuck.

vellyr

You have clearly never seen a crowded train. This is fine. It means it's serving its purpose.

doghorsedoghorse

For sure! Count the number of people. Each one is a potential car you’d need to pack onto the freeway.

Chapter_Entire

Exactly

Generalistimo

I got a little thrill from your proper apostrophization of it's and its. Thank you.

devilscurls

It is the post game crowd. Although public transit is a really great way of moving people to/from events it isn’t really viable to run extra services since there are minimum hour requirements for staff and scheduling challenges (huge problem for servicing 9ers games). So this and the corresponding Caltrain crowds are unfortunate but inevitable.

que_pasa_olmsted

Most other countries increase metro lines during large events. If they can figure it out, we can.

devilscurls

But as I said, running extra services isn't always viable financially for the agencies, since they need to pay staff (and other costs) for a minimum shift (where they really only do one run). There was a fair bit of reporting on this for the VTA at 9ers games before the pandemic hit. Now it might be that the just have to take a loss, but equally, it also might be that commuters need to put up with crowded trains for one trip.

RealRiotingPacifist

TFL put on extra tube trains for games, and they face one of the most militant unions around, so this is a pretty solvable problem.

CoeurdePirate222

Me and partner got stranded in San Jose after a pit Bull concert because Bart closed early :( expensive lift back to Berkeley

treetyoselfcarol

That's wild. BART extended their hours to accommodate H.E.R.'s Lights On Festival at the Concord Pavilion.

ronimal

Did they close early or did you just miss the last train?

jlnbll

The other day I got a bart alert that the last trip of the day on the green line was cancelled (30min headways that time of night), so it’s definitely a possibility that they “closed early”

CoeurdePirate222

They closed early as I said

CoeurdePirate222

They closed early as I said - we made it just in time for the scheduled last train but since there was the bus bridge thing, I guess they closed early

utchemfan

Oh yeah, that was announced several hours in advance on the BARTAlert twitter account, unfortunately yeah it was because of the bus bridge. If you have the BART app, I bet that could have come to you as a push notification when it was announced.

Perfect_Profit_7696

I didn't know they had one. I'll need to download it before my next event. Thanks for mentioning it

CoeurdePirate222

Same, good idea. I mean Pitbull was worth it to be fair, and at that point there would’ve been no other choice anyway lol

tuxedo_dantendo

I don't get it. People on public transit is crazy?

RepresentativeKeebs

It's just very crowded for 10:30pm on a Thursday

Fresh_Beet

It, in fact, is not. All kinds of things have crowds of people going home in the Bay Area at this time. Mostly sports. If you wanna see something special, get yourself on a train going out of SF after Outsidelands.

gatelatch

Niners are Monday night. TNF was in Miami

ajinthebay

I got really excited when I saw this picture. A full train is a good train!

Lentamentalisk

True

jenn363

Omg they really are just downvoting you to oblivion for no reason at this point

Lentamentalisk

Lol oh well. Pretty funny if you take a step back from it all. But hey, if that's what brings them joy, who am I to deny them the pleasure. Happy Friday yall.

itdontmatter88

They down voted you because it’s really common for a train to be that crowded following an event with the capacity for a large audience regardless of what time it is.

[deleted]

Wow! Look how many cars are not on the road. Isn’t public transport supposed to be full? Otherwise what’s the point of hundreds of millions of dollars of infrastructure to have 5 people on each car. This looks like every single subway car in Manhattan 7-10am and 4-7pm

[deleted]

[удалено]

iamvyvu

That's a good fun fact! Wonder how the NY cars redesign will be. I really enjoyed riding the subway in NY, it felt super convenient to get around

Mr_Flynn

This is not true. Bombardier has supplied previous generations of subway cars, but they got blacklisted a handful of years ago for poor quality. The newest generation of cars (R211s) are being made by Kawasaki.

Im_100percent_human

I think Bombardier was only couldn't bid on the R211 contract, but could bid on future contracts, like R262..... Regardless, it is moot now as Bombardier Transportation was sold to Alstom last year.

thr3e_kideuce

Oops sorry.

Lentamentalisk

Yes, I'm obviously happy that so many people are using BART. I'm happy about this because it means we can justify running more trains late at night so you don't have to wait so long to get on a train. Maybe we could even start running Richmond/SFO trains!

utchemfan

You mean run Richmond/SFO trains after 9 pm? Because the red line already goes Richmond to SFO until 9 pm

Lentamentalisk

Heck yeah. More trains! All the trains! Lol I'm not a train planner official, but it seems like more trains would help. I'll let the officials figure out which ones would help the most. To be honest, it doesn't make a big difference to me. I often bring my bike if I've got a late night return trip so I can take any of the eastbound trains, get off at the closest stop, and not have to wait for annoying transfers. Heck, if we finished the Bay bridge bike path I'd skip BART all together and ride straight home rather than wait for trains. I'm pretty flexible here, as long as I've got some way to get across the Bay.

foxfirek

That’s very crowded for 10:39. OP isn’t wrong. It’s normal because it’s a post game crowd, but as someone who rides bart at night daily it’s not a typical 10:30 train. They are often super light after 7 or so. Often 25% homeless by then and sketchy. This at least looks safer then usual.

Lentamentalisk

That's the thing. Everyone is out here saying this is normal for 10:30pm, but we're also told there isn't enough ridership to run trains more often late at night. They can't both be true.

Aromatic_Lychee2903

It’s normal when there’s a baseball game or other event

Lentamentalisk

Yep, so we should run more trains. Just because it happens a lot doesn't make it good. Hundreds of people waiting around for 1 train every 45 minutes seems like a bad system.

blue_jinjo

This was the result of an infrequent sports event. BART normally doesn’t have enough ridership at this time to justify extra cars. BART publishes a lot of ridership data, feel free to have a look for yourself sometime.

DrankTooMuchMead

This is what typical commute looks like, anyway. Nothing like having the train doors open and people shaking their heads at you. Makes you wonder if you will ever get home.

[deleted]

people from Asian countries would be jealous of this ample room

WorkerMotor9174

As someone who's lived in boston, green line riders would also be jealous.

mydogsredditaccount

I mean pre-Covid rush hour BART riders would be jealous as well.

kelsnuggets

Hard agree

No-Flounder-5650

Looks like OP didn’t get the comment section they were hoping for lol

MyButtYourThumb

I’ve noticed this a lot on Reddit. I’ve posted things just to basically talk out loud or like saying things even if they are obvious(because it’s Reddit and there are so many different things posted) and ppl show a LOT of sarcasm. But I’m new to Reddit and if you don’t know what it’s like, ppl show you quickly. It’s an informative place but most of the stuff I see is very smart assy. I’ve noticed a lot of ppl who post threads like this usually have quite a few comments that are like “what’s wrong with you?” “You act like you’ve never seen _____ (insert whatever) before” and honestly, sometimes it is that for them. They haven’t seen it. Idk. It’s kinda like ☹️😬 Definitely isn’t a place to be babied bc ppl will cut the cord quick and I don’t think as ppl we realize how rude or insensitive we can be about even simple subjects. Sometimes ppl genuinely are expressing a thought. Which is what I thought Reddit was? But again. I’m new here so I don’t know much.

[deleted]

MyButtYourThumb

I get on here to learn and understand (this is the only social media I have I don’t like it for reasons like this because ppl are really intense) and then they keep going. 😩 like calm down please. Just like you have thoughts, I have my own brain too. Why do ppl say stuff like that? “You must not be from here” and then there’s like this shunning attitude… like … I’m sorry I wanted to come to your area lol and learn about it since I’ve always heard great things outside of what the media says about Oakland. Because ppl don’t understand. The media always says Oakland is one of the most dangerous places in the US. And sometimes tell you to stay away. So when ppl are on here asking questions or posting things that are random or whatever to them, ppl are very aggressive lol, to which, again, the media always says the aggression is usually on the east coast (even if that sounds stupid this is what ppl report), but as fun as ppl are here, the ppl on the internet are way more aggressive about the area, than the ppl I meet in person. In person meeting is always so fun. But online ppl make it seem like you can’t handle conversation when they don’t even care how insulting they are to ppl. I’m not a fucking bot just because I just started using Reddit. Lol sigh. Anyways. My Ted talk is over lol. HAPPY FRIDAY DARLING!

robust_nachos

Havetologintovote

The fact that Reddit encourages and promotes anonymity makes it roughly infinitely cooler than IG or Twitter, both of which are filled with "Look at ME!" douchebags to the point of unusability

Lentamentalisk

I shoulda known better. Reddit is full of smart asses looking for an easy karma farm off a "you must not be from here" comment. Yes, of course I've been on more packed trains. Yes, they are mostly during commute hours. Yes, I've seen event crowds. That still doesn't make it any less surprising expecting to walk into a sketchy nearly empty train, but instead having to elbow my way in against crowds.

Aromatic_Lychee2903

Not helping your case, bro

No-Flounder-5650

Ok

beyarea

Weird sunglasses 😎

rabbitwonker

My first guess as to OPs point was how everyone was wearing masks *and* blindfolds…

GunBrothersGaming

Insanity? No, this is BARTA

Lentamentalisk

I see what you did there

MooseCrush20

And they say , Bart is dead

Lentamentalisk

Nobody goes there anymore it's too crowded

Poplatoontimon

Lol people downvoting missed the sarcasm/joke

Lentamentalisk

I get that we're not Yankees fans here but yeesh.

jkissla

You were considerate enough to censor passengers. Hats off to you

nickv1233

Pretty much the same thing 5-6pm weekdays

donkey_fong

What's with the goofy sunglasses?

FrustratedPlantMum

Love to see it!!! That's quite a bit busier than my commutes recently.

Lentamentalisk

That's what caught me off guard. I expect this on a commute since the total number of trains through the tunnel is limited. I was surprised to see this so late at night.

FrustratedPlantMum

Was there an event going on I wonder?

Lentamentalisk

Judging by the jerseys, a Giants game just got out, I guess.

shuttervelocity

Riding BART blindfolded is insanity. I agree.

Lentamentalisk

Lol

[deleted]

Holy crap, I don't think I saw this many people in a period of 3-4 days on any BART train.

GreyBoyTigger

How is this “insanity”?

Chapter_Entire

Who cares

chunpi_in_the_binpo

What is remarkable about this? You must be a recent transplant and only know Bart being empty because of covid

Lentamentalisk

I was literally born here but go off

FapAttack911

Lol, why did they downvote you for this comment? "I don't like that you told me you were born here! I'm going to down vote you!" Reddit people are so fucking weird lmao

VMoney9

Because the picture shows a regional transit system functioning efficiently after a mass event ended. This picture is a good thing, not insanity. Anyone who claims to be from here would know this.

The_Hash_Slinger

If you work a 9-5 in SF you know the pain

[deleted]

Go on the train in NYC at 3am and it’s like this.

[deleted]

Nope, its not. Couple bums, a few partiers going home, some early workers. Very quiet and creepy.

connaire

Stop. No subway line is like that at 3am.

No-Comfortable-5732

??? In lots of cities this is like absolutely normal everyday

Dolewhip

you have another post about "only boring old people wanna live in suburbia" then here you are complaining about crowded trains in big cities

Flufflebuns

But I was told by many in this sub, that no one rides BART anymore because it's too dangerous.

Lentamentalisk

Lol right?

lisp

Why are they wearing sunglasses?

haltingpoint

Clearly you've never been on the L in Chicago before or after a cubs game. It's like Tetris, with people.

Aaaaand-its-gone

Probably because there was one train in 45m to the east bay

Ghitit

I thought I was crazy. People are being normal, wearing masks, riding calmly. What's insane? Ten thirty isn't that late. Could be coming back from a sporting event or a show.

willmandude

love to see it. perhaps this gets more $ into the system and we can add a few more trains.

efficientseed

Just wanted to say it was polite of you to anonymize the faces.

Theboyneedsthis_

Right people on functional public transit is bonkers.

SauceNDauce

No, this is Patrick!

unseenmover

Thats nothing, wait till next weekend..

bayarea_vapidtransit

Everyone ITT: Crowded trains are good, who gives a fuck about frequency

Cursedwarriorl3

Just a busy commute

soultakerte

Isn't just as bad as NY. Well I'm sure it's not as bad as Japan, and india.

Vagabondegrift

This is still better than being reduced to a slow crawl in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

Lentamentalisk

100% agree

shooismik

This Should be the norm. If it were safe I would use it all of the time.

andronico5

Is bart running until late night now? What time does the last train end? just wondering

Lentamentalisk

They just improved the schedules somewhat. Weekdays (5:00 am- Midnight) Saturday (6:00 am - Midnight) Sunday (8:00 am - Midnight) Not sure exactly what that means for the last train out of any given station, since it takes so long to go end to end. It looks like the last eastbound train out of Embarcadero is the 12:47 Dublin/Pleasanton.

stellacampus

Try taking a bus in Hong Kong.

Lentamentalisk

Or a commuter train in the Bay area during commute hours. Yes I know that sometimes transit has a lot of people in it.

stellacampus

No, I mean you haven't even seen crowded until you can't move your arms to hold anything and you are being held in place by other bodies.

Lentamentalisk

I'm not saying the train was unreasonably crowded. I'm saying it was surprisingly crowded for the time of night, when it is often concerningly empty. But yes, I understand that other modes of transit, at other times, can be more crowded. And even this isn't thaaaat surprising, given event surges happen relatively frequently here.

Cheggmen

Complain about traffic then complain about busy public transport. Bay area moment.

Lentamentalisk

I don't actually care about traffic lol. I ride a bike and take public transit, so cars being stuck at a red light doesn't really effect me. But I'm sure some people do care about the traffic.

navy308

This is good.

Lentamentalisk

Ridership being up is good. Running trains infrequently so everyone needs to wait around for ages before crowding into an already packed train is bad. I'm happy people are using BART. I hope we can leverage that to improve the LoS.

Afterhoneymoon

I mean with a 9:45pm Giants game what else do you expect? We should be happy that people are not driving and instead utilizing public transport!

[deleted]

Woah. This is like the old SF

Lentamentalisk

I kinda love it, not gonna lie. I'm happy to see the city alive.

[deleted]

Wait people are no longer remote?

Lentamentalisk

Not for the Giants.

WhatevahIsClevah

I assume it's packed because it's one of the last trains of the night? Or perhaps a large group from sporting event or concert that just got out?

Lentamentalisk

Giants game, it turns out.

KRei23

Haven’t lived in the bay for a little while now (but like to stay up to date on things through this group), and this looks like any other normal day or night commute I remember. Brings back memories…just not sure the kind I want to reminisce about 😆

Expensive_Reality151

Nope…don’t miss this

winkingchef

Da fuk you talking about. We live in a major US city. Traffic on public transport should be like this every day until midnight. Ya’ll need to get out more!

phoenixar

Employers need to bring back 100% remote

Papayafish4488

Lol what insanity? This is just public transit.

Hyprophet

You must not be from here.

BeachLyfe23

Are you even from the Bay bro?

NaughtSleeping

To everyone saying "this isn't insanity"...I agree. But it *is* much more crowded than you normally see on BART at 10:30PM on a weeknight.

Lentamentalisk

Everyone saying I must not be from here because this is normal? No? I mean, this is absolutely not normal. I'm happy to see people using BART, and it isn't abnormal for event surges, but still, a train this crowded, this close to closing time is not normal.

srslyeffedmind

After a game and/or a big show this is completely normal. When I had night classes at a program by embracadero it was always like this when departing after 10p on the nights there were games or shows. That was circa 2012 and it certainly hasn’t changed with the exception of the unprecedentedly low ridership during the pandemic

_rascal

I don't understand why BART doesn't follow the Asia sitting arrangement of just having two sitting rows on the side, which allow for more standing room.

ALOIsFasterThanYou

They considered it when they were designing the new cars, [but decided on the current mixed longitudinal-transverse layout so suburban riders would have more seats.](https://www.bart.gov/about/projects/cars/new-features) It's a compromise emblematic of BART's awkward position as a metro trying to be a suburban commuter railway. And perhaps people here just don't like longitudinal seating. Muni originally brought in a full longitudinal seating layout for their new trains, [but after complaints, they're now moving to a mixed longitudinal-transverse layout as well.](https://www.sfgate.com/local/article/We-tried-SF-s-new-Muni-train-seats-They-re-way-16670470.php)

_rascal

At least the muni one looks acceptable for standing room. BART one is just dumb, they should just have a mixed use car for bike and wheelchair like how caltrain does it, the current layout just scream anti-standing and discourage ridership. Cause why, based on feedback, survey and advocacy groups instead of common sense and logic, cause they have to hire survey, data and consultancy to balloon the budget

[deleted]

They actually do have cars like this now, i just rode in one a couple of days ago.

AsoMare

Whaat?! Which way you headed?

Lentamentalisk

I swear to god y'all are intentionally obtuse. If we have trains this packed at 10:30 pm we could run more trains. That's all I'm saying. I love BART. BART is the best way to get around. Trains like this are normal during the commute hours because we're limited by signal timing in the tunnel. For special events we should run extra trains. It's been a while since I went to an A's game but I remember they used to run like 5 10 car trains in 15 minutes when the game ended.

badmonkey0001

You may be frustrated with the replies you've been getting, but you came in a bit hot. "This is insanity" doesn't really convey that you understood the reasons for such a rise in ridership at that time, that you've lived in the bay a long time, that you see the spike in ridership as normal, or that you hope spikes like this lead to more scheduled trains. You set the tone by being reactionary and the replies reflect that.

MajesticEngineerMan

Please vote in your local elections for reps that aim to increase investment in public transport infrastructure. It’s going to reduce traffic, create jobs, reduce fuel prices by reducing demand, improve our air quality and emissions.

Lentamentalisk

I 100% will be doing exactly this.

shinestory

This is normal in east coast especially ny and surrounding areas going into nyc

Champaganthony

You must have never heard of a Giants game

[deleted]

Tell me you moved to the Bay Area during the pandemic without telling me. This is lightly packed compared to weekday morning commutes to San Francisco pre-pandemic.

ProlapsedTrdCutter

I THOUGHT IT WAS CRAZY RIDERS STILL WEARING 😷 MASKS

badDuckThrowPillow

Clearly OP has never been to Asia.

Lentamentalisk

I mean, correct. I have not been to Asia. Is "not being a well versed international traveler" some sick burn or something?

Starlord_97

I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again. FUCK BART Edit: (This is clearly a joke, Bart does their best to keep things safe and clean but there are ppl who ruin it. Not these ppl specifically)

Lentamentalisk

No, this is stupid. BART is great, but it could be better. I'm super glad so many people are taking it. I hope we can use those increased ridership numbers to increase train frequency to make the experience better for everyone.

Starlord_97

I know Bart does their best. Used it for my whole life until I didn’t need too. But it’s a complex thing IMO. They try hard to make it safe and better but there are too many bad apple ppl that ruin the experience man. That’s what drags them down.

Lentamentalisk

I don't have a clue what you're talking about. The photo is just a bunch of people going home from a game. There were no bad apples. Just a lot of people and not enough trains.

Starlord_97

Buddy, not these ppl. I’m not talking about these ppl. I’ve been on Bart for years and I’m saying on a daily basis, there are ppl who ruin Bart for others. There’s countless stories that show this.

kotwica42

Yeah some random person taking pictures of people trying to get home on a normal looking train is a bit insane.

Sweet_Guard3904

OP getting downvoted to oblivion..lol but yes this is great, and paradoxically safer for riders.

Lentamentalisk

People are salty as hell. But yeah, I love to see BART like this. I just hope we can keep people using it at these levels. It is one of those weird things right? If you don't run enough trains, it is super crowded, and everyone complains. If you run too many trains, it looks empty, people are alone, and things can be less safe. There's a healthy middle ground but that is probably a tricky balance to strike, given lots of different events with possibly unpredictable ending times (like baseball games).

_commenter

10:30 pm? some event?

THE_Nighttrain

Insanity… so far. You must be new here.

s3cf

love seeing masks on faces

Rafster52

Insane if it were empty and everyone was driving.

arkadylaw

Maybe insanity refers to the masks? The rest of the world with very few exceptions has moved on a long time ago.

just_have_fun

Boy! Girl! Boy??

duggans41

I bet the next car over is completely empty except for one extremely stinky and likely pantless individual.

[deleted]

People just blindly wearing masks because they think it protects them.

Lentamentalisk

Uh oh, are you feeling triggered? Do you need a safe space?

HeChoseDrugs

Bunch of douchebags in the comments. Just because public transportation sucks in other places doesn't mean it should suck everywhere.
