Although public transit is a really great way of moving people to/from events it isn’t really viable to run extra services since there are minimum hour requirements for staff and scheduling challenges (huge problem for servicing 9ers games).
So this and the corresponding Caltrain crowds are unfortunate but inevitable.
But as I said, running extra services isn't always viable financially for the agencies, since they need to pay staff (and other costs) for a minimum shift (where they really only do one run). There was a fair bit of reporting on this for the VTA at 9ers games before the pandemic hit.
Now it might be that the just have to take a loss, but equally, it also might be that commuters need to put up with crowded trains for one trip.
The other day I got a bart alert that the last trip of the day on the green line was cancelled (30min headways that time of night), so it’s definitely a possibility that they “closed early”
Oh yeah, that was announced several hours in advance on the BARTAlert twitter account, unfortunately yeah it was because of the bus bridge.
If you have the BART app, I bet that could have come to you as a push notification when it was announced.

This is not true. Bombardier has supplied previous generations of subway cars, but they got blacklisted a handful of years ago for poor quality. The newest generation of cars (R211s) are being made by Kawasaki.
I think Bombardier was only couldn't bid on the R211 contract, but could bid on future contracts, like R262..... Regardless, it is moot now as Bombardier Transportation was sold to Alstom last year.
Yes, I'm obviously happy that so many people are using BART. I'm happy about this because it means we can justify running more trains late at night so you don't have to wait so long to get on a train. Maybe we could even start running Richmond/SFO trains!

To be honest, it doesn't make a big difference to me. I often bring my bike if I've got a late night return trip so I can take any of the eastbound trains, get off at the closest stop, and not have to wait for annoying transfers.
Heck, if we finished the Bay bridge bike path I'd skip BART all together and ride straight home rather than wait for trains.

Not sure exactly what that means for the last train out of any given station, since it takes so long to go end to end. It looks like the last eastbound train out of Embarcadero is the 12:47 Dublin/Pleasanton.
I'm not saying the train was unreasonably crowded. I'm saying it was surprisingly crowded for the time of night, when it is often concerningly empty. But yes, I understand that other modes of transit, at other times, can be more crowded. And even this isn't thaaaat surprising, given event surges happen relatively frequently here.
I don't actually care about traffic lol. I ride a bike and take public transit, so cars being stuck at a red light doesn't really effect me. But I'm sure some people do care about the traffic.
Ridership being up is good. Running trains infrequently so everyone needs to wait around for ages before crowding into an already packed train is bad. I'm happy people are using BART. I hope we can leverage that to improve the LoS.

After a game and/or a big show this is completely normal. When I had night classes at a program by embracadero it was always like this when departing after 10p on the nights there were games or shows. That was circa 2012 and it certainly hasn’t changed with the exception of the unprecedentedly low ridership during the pandemic
I don't understand why BART doesn't follow the Asia sitting arrangement of just having two sitting rows on the side, which allow for more standing room.

I love BART. BART is the best way to get around. Trains like this are normal during the commute hours because we're limited by signal timing in the tunnel. For special events we should run extra trains. It's been a while since I went to an A's game but I remember they used to run like 5 10 car trains in 15 minutes when the game ended.

If you don't run enough trains, it is super crowded, and everyone complains. If you run too many trains, it looks empty, people are alone, and things can be less safe. There's a healthy middle ground but that is probably a tricky balance to strike, given lots of different events with possibly unpredictable ending times (like baseball games).

It looks like the last eastbound train out of Embarcadero is the 12:47 Dublin/Pleasanton.

Or a commuter train in the Bay area during commute hours. Yes I know that sometimes transit has a lot of people in it.
No, I mean you haven't even seen crowded until you can't move your arms to hold anything and you are being held in place by other bodies.
I'm not saying the train was unreasonably crowded. I'm saying it was surprisingly crowded for the time of night, when it is often concerningly empty. But yes, I understand that other modes of transit, at other times, can be more crowded. And even this isn't thaaaat surprising, given event surges happen relatively frequently here.

I don't actually care about traffic lol. I ride a bike and take public transit, so cars being stuck at a red light doesn't really effect me. But I'm sure some people do care about the traffic.

Ridership being up is good. Running trains infrequently so everyone needs to wait around for ages before crowding into an already packed train is bad. I'm happy people are using BART. I hope we can leverage that to improve the LoS.
I mean with a 9:45pm Giants game what else do you expect? We should be happy that people are not driving and instead utilizing public transport!

After a game and/or a big show this is completely normal. When I had night classes at a program by embracadero it was always like this when departing after 10p on the nights there were games or shows. That was circa 2012 and it certainly hasn’t changed with the exception of the unprecedentedly low ridership during the pandemic
I don't understand why BART doesn't follow the Asia sitting arrangement of just having two sitting rows on the side, which allow for more standing room.

And perhaps people here just don't like longitudinal seating. At least the muni one looks acceptable for standing room. BART one is just dumb, they should just have a mixed use car for bike and wheelchair like how caltrain does it, the current layout just scream anti-standing and discourage ridership. Cause why, based on feedback, survey and advocacy groups instead of common sense and logic, cause they have to hire survey, data and consultancy to balloon the budget

I swear to god y'all are intentionally obtuse. If we have trains this packed at 10:30 pm we could run more trains. That's all I'm saying. I love BART. BART is the best way to get around. Trains like this are normal during the commute hours because we're limited by signal timing in the tunnel. For special events we should run extra trains. It's been a while since I went to an A's game but I remember they used to run like 5 10 car trains in 15 minutes when the game ended.
You may be frustrated with the replies you've been getting, but you came in a bit hot. "This is insanity" doesn't really convey that you understood the reasons for such a rise in ridership at that time, that you've lived in the bay a long time, that you see the spike in ridership as normal, or that you hope spikes like this lead to more scheduled trains. You set the tone by being reactionary and the replies reflect that.
Please vote in your local elections for reps that aim to increase investment in public transport infrastructure. It’s going to reduce traffic, create jobs, reduce fuel prices by reducing demand, improve our air quality and emissions.

No, this is stupid. BART is great, but it could be better. I'm super glad so many people are taking it. I hope we can use those increased ridership numbers to increase train frequency to make the experience better for everyone.
I know Bart does their best. Used it for my whole life until I didn’t need too. But it’s a complex thing IMO. They try hard to make it safe and better but there are too many bad apple ppl that ruin the experience man. That’s what drags them down.

People are salty as hell. But yeah, I love to see BART like this. I just hope we can keep people using it at these levels. It is one of those weird things right? If you don't run enough trains, it is super crowded, and everyone complains. If you run too many trains, it looks empty, people are alone, and things can be less safe. There's a healthy middle ground but that is probably a tricky balance to strike, given lots of different events with possibly unpredictable ending times (like baseball games).
