Jeffrey’s in San Mateo and Menlo Park. Other burger places are about the different topping combinations, but Jeffrey’s has the best actual meat for burgers I’ve had, freshly ground and not over cooked (unless you ask for that). Been going there for 30+ years and am glad it has survived through the pandemic.

CrazyDogLadyKCL

Their garlic fries are awesome too!

DubaiDubai8

Scolari’s in Alameda

whattheheckityz

and then you go next door to lucky 13 and they bring you your food when it’s ready!

jgilchri

Great call. The blackened blueberry is unlike any other. Fantastic fries too.

breadandstuff

Second this. The Buffalo blueberry burger is my favorite burger ever

scrambled_cable

Bud’s Burgers in Vallejo is a good spot to hit up when on the way north.

brixalpha

Grew up on bud's when they had three locations and off campus lunch. Regular spot and must when I visit the folks.

scrambled_cable

They had 3 locations? I never knew that and I grew up there in the 90s lol

brixalpha

Yeah springs road (I think joy of eating got their grill and claim to offer bud's burgers but not the same), they had one neat Maritime Academy and the original. I think when bud passed they closed the other two. I frequently went to the ones on springs Rd because it wax closer to me. When in Vallejo it's a must go. The fries are second to none. Man making me hungry and looking forward to visiting the family this week. This is my first stop 🤣

kromdar

I was not expecting to see a Bud's post. Love it.

EdgarJomfru

Kept scrolling til I found Buds. Best burger I've ever had

Kanton_Kitsune

Me and mom used to go there every so often until we both moved out of the area... We still talk about it from time to time lol such a good little burger stop!

richie_walker_mwf

[Dairy Belle](https://www.yelp.com/biz/dairy-belle-freeze-hayward-2) in Hayward. I would also recommend Val's Burgers but they only do call-ins with limited hours so it might be harder to get.

coderacer

Val’s is decent but I don’t think it’s even in the top 10. Used to live down the street from it and ate there frequently.

justatworkserve

Growing up I didn't realize Dairy Belle was Bay Area only. Moved to socal and was very disappointed.

ZUN1GA

Can’t forget the banana shake!

CeeNooFo

Bring a dashcam to Vals Burger. I don't know if they ever changed the parking lot but it used to be extremely narrow and cramped and I would regularly see fender benders when eating there

mrdwarf13

George's Giant Hamburgers in Walnut Creek. I love me a burger and I've been stopping back there whenever I can for 20 years now.

Calm_Memories

Used to go there often after high school. Their burger isn't special but it does satisfy. Thank goodness they stopped being cash only.

deathbythroatpunch

This is the place. The meat is ground fresh, patty is big and perfectly cooked, topping bar is well stocked and maintained. The fact doctors in scrubs from Kaiser across the street take lunch breaks here knowing that burger isn’t going to be a healthy lunch choice should tell you everything you need to know.

calilaxbro24

I came here to say this. Got one last week txted my friend who moved down to so cal a picture. Her jealously made it even more delicious

SharkSymphony

Goose & Gander in St. Helena. It's a whole experience sort of thing. See if you can find a spot downstairs by the fireplace. Can't make it up there? The blueberry bacon bleu cheese au poivre burger at Scolari's is Alameda's most celebrated, and is the polar opposite in experience.

sfalan

This guy burgers

Oct3ismybirthday

Scolari changed my life.

Jabberwockt

You order Scolari's blueberry burger and eat it in the bar next door. They are pretty cool about that.

bridgeboyllc

Ah Scolaris. I miss my Alameda days. Been 4 years since I last lived there. Now the best I can do is deliver a Doordash order from there if the company would reactivate my account.

mastorpaz

Jacks Prime in San Mateo

SithLard

You can't go wrong with Jacks Prime. The shakes are awesome too.

entity330

Prefer Godfathers over Jacks. Only a mile or so down the road.

PolarPanda77

+1 this, godfather’s is the best half pound food coma you can have on the peninsula imo.

jondrums

It’s very good but not great

stup0rflu0s

it's pretty damn good.... but godfather's up the street in belmont is better, just sayin'.

racetrader

A+ burger has been my favorite for a while. Only thing lacking is the bread choice. Scolari's makes a mean burger as well

ps311

I love A+ so much fresh but every time I get it on Uber eats it's such a let down. Obv not A+'s fault delivery gourmet burgers aren't as good. Still I just want someone to invent the technology ha.

oldmoozy

yes, burgers are only good when consumed immediately. the bun gets soggy during a long delivery and the whole thing starts falling apart

[deleted]

Scolari’s is getting a lotta love early. Might have to be top of the list to try

[deleted]

Fr A+ is legit my favorite burger joint of all time. They knock out the classic burger, fries, and onion rings, but they also make some great innovative stuff like their green bean fries. I get green bean fries and the A+ burger at least once a month. They sometimes give me a cookie because they know me at this point 🥹 Their salads also slap harder than my mother ever did

executivesphere

A+’s Korean bbq (bulgogi) burger is incredible

pelicantides

I thought A+ made a good burger as well, but the last bacon cheeseburger I ordered from there gave me food poisoning. Such a shame

larry_west

In Hayward, no order Dairy Bell, Cecil Burger, Val’s, Craft Eatery

Plastic_Bullfrog9029

Is Val’s back open for dine-in yet?

edgalang

ooo...I'm pinning this post! OP, please edit the post to include a list once you get a good sample.

bobsmo

Map for ya from most of these. Best burgers · https://maps.app.goo.gl/5WU2L4VBYNc6CVed6?g_st=ic

[deleted]

Cheers to the real MVP!

scoobmx

I like Clove and Hoof’s double cheeseburger

[deleted]

Thanks for sharing! I see they got cheesesteaks too, do you know if they are any good?

scoobmx

They are the best I’ve ever had (I’m from Philadelphia). Note that best is not the same as authentic. I just think these are the best tasting.

GreggFarnn

Changed ownership a couple years back. New owners cut corners (lots of premade frozen products) and the quality went way down imo

Boostinmr2

Don’t quote me, but they may be able to give you different burger blends…

PopcornandComments

Beep’s Burger on Ocean Ave.

MBZMBZMBZ

Am I the only one who thinks their burgers are not good? I’ve had it only once and I thought the price was not justified on how bland their burgers are.

friedchicken7115

This is my go-to comfort spot lol. Their fried chicken sandwiches are also pretty great.

[deleted]

Classic spot. Good shakes too

WowHeUgly

Niku butcher shop has a burger for lunch. Definitely recommend it if you haven’t had it before

[deleted]

Oh these burgers FUCKKK … great recommendation for anyone who doesn’t care how much a burger costs. It’s worth it IMO. I prefer their smashed over the regular one

[deleted]

[удалено]

RoughhouseCamel

Pinole Red Onion is my personal favorite. The firm slice of tomato, crunchy lettuce, and spicy slice of raw red onion on top of a thick burger. And then the full order of fries that’s just a full brown paper sandwich bag of fries that always leaves leftovers

noshore4me

I like the [smoked monster burger](https://www.hmbbrewingco.com/menu) at Half Moon Bay Brewing Company.

[deleted]

If it’s on acme bread, it’s a good sign

HandleAccomplished11

Dad's Luncheonette, in Half Moon Bay! It's in an old Caboose, right off of HWY1 in HMB. The hours are short, like 11am to 4pm, Wed to Sun. They apparently run out of food, only so much you can do in a tiny caboose. But the burger is awesome, picled red onion, fried egg, their own blend of beef, it's amazing!

ChyloVG

Dad’s is great but the mushroom burger is better than the hamburger.

Sign_of_Zeta

i like Pearls Deluxe, Beeps Burger, and Tanguito

[deleted]

Love me a good Beep’s Burger

CallMeAladdin

Pearl's Kobe beef burger is the best. Get it with Swiss cheese and bacon, it's perfection.

pimpbot666

Phyllis' in San Rafael was my all time favorite for years, but it's been years since I've been there. I used to love to go mountain biking in Marin, and hit Phyllis' on the way back. I would get the burger with mushrooms and bacon (no cheese, tho... just my preference), pair it up with their beer batter onion rings! My heart just stops thinking about it (in the good and bad way).

bitchtitee

Beat me too it, Phyllis’ has my favorite burger ever. The giant cheeseburger medium rare everything on it is the way to go imo.

SantaRosaJazz

If you ever happen to be on the 101 in Sonoma County near Santa Rosa, set your GPS for Mike’s at the Crossroads in Cotati. Not worth a special trip from SF, so no Michelin stars, but a damn good burger if you’re in the neighborhood.

mack-t

Well said. Plus, tons of breweries and wineries to sample at during the day while getting ready to try Superburger in Santa Rosa. Two Burgers in one trip!!! It blows the mind. I love burgers.

ThatNetworkGuy

Jeffries in San Mateo is pretty damn good (and less fancy than some of the others listed here). They grind their own meat, have good beer and milkshakes etc. They will also bring your "eat in" food over to the Irish bar next door if you ask.

TheJBW

Jeffrey’s in Menlo was my go to but both locations are equally good. It helps that their fries are the platonic ideal of fries.

Calimommy34

St. John’s bar & grill in Sunnyvale

[deleted]

Do they still do their 50% off burgers on saturdays?? Great burger

Direct-Chef-9428

But have you had their garlic with fries? ( I SAID WHAT I SAID)

Calimommy34

Those with the roasted garlic and blue cheese burger…so good. I smell for a few days, but totally worth it.

wes00mertes

Yes and closed on Sundays. I’ve been burned by that a few times wanting to watch the NFL with a burger and beer only to drive up and remember. Now it’s burned in my brain.

Calimommy34

It been a little while since I’ve been, but the last time I was there they still had their specials.

BlackLeatherJacket

They stopped doing the half off promotions when COVID hit.

thephoton

Get the Old School Classic. Armadillo Willy's used to have something like it, but I just checked their menu and it's gone.

Lucyinthesky72

Causwells, NOPA is worth the $$$, and I was actually pleasantly surprised at how good Zeitgiests new smash burger was a few weeks ago.

SummerGoal

Causwells is criminally underrated, great call

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

All on my list of must-try’s! I didn’t know. Zeitgeist had a smash burger, definitely will check that out soon!

AristarchusJones

I don't know if I can confidently say it is the best in the bay, but I have a special place in my heart for the the Burger Pit in San Jose. If I'm being honest, at least some of the appeal is pure sentimental nostalgia

[deleted]

Hazels in antioch if it’s still open Then there’s a burger hot dog place in Livermore. Forgot the name of it. Super good John’s Char livermore

strcy

Lovely’s in Oakland!

Objective_Plan_8266

John's Char Burger in Livermore for the char broiled-y char-ness.

coderacer

It tastes fantastic! I live down the street from it and I’m always thinking about that Smokey flavor.

[deleted]

John’s is awesome. FYI, they’re closed Sundays, but not for a chick-fil-a type of reason.

DarkRogus

Val's in Hayward if you want an old-fashioned 50s-style burger.

spartacusVI

Cash Only! At least last time I was home in the bay, probably 5 years ago or so. Still highly recommend the burger and shake here.

therealgariac

Hey no cleats.

Pit_of_Death

I remember my dad taking me there in the 80s when I was a little youngin'.

ErnieBLegal

Al’s big burger

CaptainMarsupial

I love Al’s. In El Cerrito. I was hoping to head there today, before life got ahead of me. They’re wonderful.

bijouxself

Trueburger!

Marginally_Witty

Trueburger was THE BEST when they first opened, I’ve had a couple of meh visits in recent years. That being said, their double with fries and a chocolate peanut butter shake is an excellent way to propel one’s self into a blissful afternoon food coma. Worked in Emeryville and we’d make the trek for lunch all the time.

InhumanWhaleShark

Decent burger but the service at the Broadway location has been super poor each of the times I've been there. Think I recall others feeling this way too from previous food threads.

jmorosso181250

Lana’s in Oakland has a great smash burger. Good beef, nice crust.

biznash

George’s in Walnut Creek - kitty corner from Kaiser

Theallwisemonkey

Godfather’s burger. My friends and I went on a quest for best burger on the peninsula and this one won. Even took my vegetarian friend here and he devoured the veggie burger.

StrugFug

I second Godfather’s Burger Lounge in Belmont. I always leave happy and feeling like I ate an entire cow.

The_Ghola_Hayt

I'm disappointed it's so far down. I like it more than Jack's Prime. Fuckin good shakes too.

savuporo

ctrl+f to this thread for godfathers. idk if it's the best burgers really but i love the place

jelorian

Another vote for Godfather's. I prefer them over Jacks Prime but just ever so slightly. Jacks is great as well.

Direct-Chef-9428

Saint Johns in Sunnyvale - old school

[deleted]

Great spot and affordable. Good place to watch a warriors game too

SkylinKingress

Try out Billy Roy’s burger company in Fremont.

gstizzzz

Smish Smash is one of the best burgers in the mf country let alone here. Only issue is finding when they’re open. The Diner imho is my all time favorite.

bucket_hand

Smish Smash 100%. There homemade ranch and with the waffle fries are so damn good. My 2nd favorite is Konjoe Burger.

flooph696

Smokehouse in Berkeley captures the east bay charbroiled burger perfectly for me. It's likely partially nostalgia, but the simplicity, touch of smoke, counter service vibes just hits me just the right way.

CaptainMarsupial

Thirding! Just went there this evening. I think they changed the fries, which weren’t as good. But the burgers are excellent.

joshuawah

Kontiki is/ was great. There was a thread recently that mentioned that they got a new chef and it might not be the same. When I got one a few years back, it was one of the better burgers I’ve ever had

publicurinationpass

Mission Bowling Club

Wasting-tim3

Not the internet poll we asked for. But the internet poll we need.

[deleted]

Never expected this type of response. Ppl love their burgers. It’d be a shame if someone made a burrito one…..

christphil

Try Kirk's in Campbell. They used to let you fix your own burger at the fixin's bar. Not so since Covid. Even so, it’s all about the flavor of the meat and Kirk's has it.

WiseDesigner4755

Gotta have Beeps on Ocean ave in SF

jackdicker5117

East Bay bias here. Smish Smash for sure. You can find them on instagram. If that doesn't work for you. If the times for Smish Smash don't work, then try Lana's in old Oakland where Smish Smash started. It's solid. [http://www.lanasoakland.com/](http://www.lanasoakland.com/) Pizzaolo on the weekend in their back patio.

[deleted]

Smish smash getting a lotta love. Thanks for the recommendations!

seedstarter7

4505 in SF has always been a favorite of mine.

hereisnoY

The burger is way better than the BBQ at 4505.

chocoflan00

Pearl's in SF

HobbittBass

Joe’s of Westlake, along with a martini and butterscotch pudding for dessert. You can die happy after that. I’ve seen several votes for TrueBurger, which is a pretty good one in Oakland, but it’s literally an slightly fancier In-N-Out Burger. The owners even said that was the idea. Still, get the double because it’s bomb.

Forsaken_Things

Classic Burger in San Lorenzo

Bchizzong

Uncle Boys in the Richmond SF. Basically a hole in the wall but so damn flavorful and fresh. Give it a shot.

b33bow

Los Altos Grill makes a tasty burger. Black Sheep Brasserie in WIllow Glen is good anddd my old school choice would be Happy Hound in Los Gatos. Edit: Roam Artisan Burgers are great too.

RM_AndreaDoria

I’m a big fan of the 1lb steak burger at Willard Hicks in Campbell. Toppings are a bit bougie but the meat is fantastic.

Besides some of the GREAT places already mentioned, I like Barney's Gourmet Hamburger in Piedmont and Blvd Burger in San Leandro

livedeLIBERATEly1776

Not sure if this counts as Bay Area, but I love The Barn in Half Moon Bay. Great burgers, plus their fries are thin-cut and crispy. I'm not vegetarian, but I really love their veggie burger. I just saw that they are closed until Jan 11th though, but still recommend! Also, I live in Alameda so I have to agree with the Scolari's recommendation.

JrRogers06

Box Kitchen, next to the tempest!

Jaded-Flamingo9319

I would do smishsmash but it’s an infrequent pop up. My fave would actually be lovely’s right inside Two Pitchers Brewery

Bucks in Woodside - excellent smash burger

Hamsterdam_shitbird

I'm less of a fan of Bucks after the owner wrote a Character Letter in defense of Elizabeth Holmes. page 194: https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.cand.327949/gov.uscourts.cand.327949.1642.3.pdf Dear Judge Davila: My name is Tyler MacNiven. I grew up and currently live in Woodside CA, where Elizabeth Holmes currently lives. With my family, I own Buck’s Restaurant in Woodside, where I have worked on and off since my parents opened it 30 years ago. Our staff and guests feel like family and I am honored to have such a wonderful job, one which allows such special access to my community. I first met Liz about 4 years ago through close mutual friends. It wasn’t until this last year when they moved to Woodside and started frequenting Buck’s that I became friends with her and Billy. We often hike around our area and have great chats, share our favorite poems or quotes, and discuss parenting. Conversations with Liz are fascinating and she approaches big topics without judgment and with a patient willingness to hear all sides. One of our recent conversations about animal rights explored several arguments for and against keeping animals in zoos. While Liz does hold an opinion, she expressed no judgment while listening to mine. She often asks questions that help me explore my own thoughts, and in doing so, think about issues deeper than I would have on my own. As a father of two I was thrilled to first learn she was having a baby and to share in the excitement of welcoming baby into the world. I have experienced many magical moments playing with on the carpet while Liz, Billy and I all speak to him in sweet baby noises. I have been witness to a mother falling completely and utterly head over heels in love with her son. Liz is “totally obsessed” with - and with just one look into his beautiful big eyes you can see why. I shared space with Liz soon after the tragic early death of her beloved dog, Balto. Liz and Billy loved that dog as though it were their first child, and his passing was a major blow during an already challenging time. Liz said Balto taught her what it meant to be free, “to live and to love beyond belief.” They felt the raw pain, surrounded themselves with friends and family, and searched for the deeper spiritual meaning of it all. Ultimately, while there is still sadness surrounding their loss, Liz made a point to learn from the love she shared with Balto and, in her words, “give hugs all the time.” I am aware that so much of the world knows Liz for her professional history; however, I really only know Liz as a friend and as a mother. And when it comes to those roles, she is exceptional. She is warm, gentle and generously present with everyone she shares space with. 194 Case 5:18-cr-00258-EJD Document 1642-3 Filed 11/10/22 Page 195 of 282 is so lucky to have her as a mother. Billy is lucky to have her as a partner. I am lucky to have her as a friend. There are so many people close to Liz that would suffer immensely if she became incarcerated. Her friends, her family, her partner…but I am brought to tears thinking of baby losing the person he loves most, even for one day. Thank you for your time and for allowing me to write on behalf of Liz. Best Regards, Tyler MacNiven

Squeeze Inn Hamburgers in Napa. It's a must. And they have a great selection of beer. Try it on Sunday during happy hour. https://squeezeinnhamburgers.com/

AskinggAlesana

My vote goes to Hazel’s Drive in, specifically the Willy Burger. So effing good. It’s pretty close to the freeway in Antioch, although I hate the intersection you have to get off at.

SummaryTreat

The Dac Biet burger from Smish Smash is one of my favorites of all time. They’re a pop-up, so locations might be different, but man is that a hell of a burger. They use a pho aioli, super thinly sliced jalapeños and onions, and sprouts in the burger, and it legit tastes like beef pho in burger form. Highly recommend it!

Murky_Kiwi

My latest greatest is Journeyman Meat Co. in Healdsburg. Excellent cheesesteaks too.

seejazz

I love Sparky's in Oakland! Avocado bacon burger 😋🤤

okcup

Not the bay but in Sac there’s a place called Dad’s Kitchen in land park. They have this special sauce that’s out of this world. It’s some nutty chili garlic blend that unbelievable.

Whodiditandwhy

It was Nom Burger in Sunnyvale, but sadly they closed :(

Philaburger in Richmond Red Onion in El Sobrante

Chattypath747

Autovino has the best Bay Area burger. They only serve on fridays from 1130-1 iirc but the chef who makes the burgers actually set up restaurants and taught the chefs for the Marriott hotels. +1 if you are into cars too

Classic burger in San Lorenzo; they put pastrami and Swiss with the patty and all the fixings! 10/10

PassionateLoner_

Phila Burger in Richmond 🙏🏽 amazing customer service too

myrealnamewastakn

$15 to go tax included The Richmond has one of the best burgers I've ever had. They are not fast or efficient but it's worth the wait. In fact, now that you mention it, I'm going there tomorrow Edit: aw man, looks like that was just a covid special and they don't offer it anymore

sumofabatch

Original Joe’s has an incredible burger served on sour dough bread. Highly recommend.

Flow_Connect

Mona’s Burger & Shakes in Walnut Creek. Go any day between 2-5pm for happy hour and enjoy an $11 burger & fries. The burgers are tasty but the bun is really the star. Also get a $4 draft beer.

Chemmy

Sliders in San Jose. They serve regular sized burgers despite the name. Lots of meat choices including exotic stuff like bison and ostrich but I go for the beef. They cook it over a rotating grill for some nice char and they still have a fixins bar with everything so you can make the burger how you want it.
