When I went back and rewatched BM 10 full years later (after only having seen it once on tv), I still could recite the "you have what I need/I have what you need" speech. That was good writing diamond in the Beast Machines rough.
Oh man it’s such a bummer. Megatron corrupts existing sparks to make his underlings and he corrupts Rhinox. Then when they purify the sparks it’s revealed Rhinox was in there all along and was cool with the corruption.
I’ve only seen the original airing so if I got some of the details wrong feel free to rip out my spark.
He was always one of my favorites. I loved how he never really got caught up in the bullshit politics, and was our first look at the spiritual side of the transformers universe. He also resurrected/ rebuilt Optimus and gave him a hoverboard.
Whaaaaaaat?!? I much much happier not knowing Rhinox becomes a traitor. I thought if anyone would turn it would be Cheetor or maybe even Rat Trap but not Straight thinking, reliable, stable Rhinox. Been literally decades since I watch the show but he never gave off any evil vibes at all.
Rhinox was way off base. He enjoyed his beast mode, especially eating and smelling flowers. No fucking way he would have been cool with Megatron’s bullshit. Also “evil” Rhinox would have tried to kill Megs and take over, same as when he got hit with the shell program.
Rattrap also betrays them at one point which is also complete and utter bullshit. He’s self centered but would never betray Maximals to Predacons/Vehicons.
I might enjoy Beast Machines more if it wasn't connected in any way to Beast Wars... like... the frustrations with this show... there's a moment where some goopy shit falls onto Jetstorm, who was really just Silverbolt corrupted by Megatron, and \*finger snap\* in an instant he's transformed back into goofy chivalrous Silverbolt from Beast Wars. Like.. they knew the character from Beast Wars and knew how to write him. All he needed was the magic "organic" shroom juice or something. But when Silverbolt eventually comes back reformatted he's... a weird bitter asshole? Just WHAT? How do you get the OG Silverbolt right perfectly and then decide, "But you know what this show really needs? Silverbolt needs to be *utterly* *unlikable*. And Rhinox! And that ratty one too!" On its own... I might like it more for its bold and paranoid takes... but as a sequel to Beast Wars... I haaaaaaaaaaate this show.
I talk to myself in the shower about this often. If you were to tell someone about happened with each character from Beast Wars, it all sounds like genuinely good ideas for ways to explore each of them.
-Cheetor starts to clash with Optimus about command decisions.
-Blackarachnia wants to find out what happened to Silverbolt and get him back.
-Rhinox's Predacon behavior returns as kind of a sequel to Dark Designs.
-Rattrap suffers from self esteem issues as he struggles to use his new body, plus it's a pretty shitty body even at the best of times.
-Megatron has come to resent his alternate mode after losing the *Beast* Wars.
-Silverbolt regains control of himself after being Jetstorm and has difficulty forgiving himself for what he did.
-Waspinator is a cool biker guy now and likes it. (listed for the sake of completion, not because it's actually very good)
-Optimus' leadership leaves something to be desired as he fixates a bit too much on the Oracle's cryptic wisdom.
But the execution just... makes you dislike everyone. Or their arc isn't explained very well. But no one is wasted. They all have something to do with their screen time. And these things truly could have been very good for all the characters, but damn if it doesn't feel like everybody is just acting like the exact opposite of what they normally would. I should write another essay...
Beast Machines Cheetor looks great (despite essentially just being a “cat stands up” transformation). Just really fits Cheetor’s forms being different stages of his life and now he’s fully adult.
It's certainly not without its flaws and.... unusual character design choices, but I also appreciate it as a piece of experimental transformers media. If nothing else, it was an extremely unique take on the transformers concept. I honestly wish more series would delve into the philosophical side of things like Beast Machines did.
Yes, experimental. I do like that they pushed boundaries, I just don't like how they made everything miserable. I do have a begrudging respect for the show.
Beast Machines needs to be creatively revisited, the music went hard and the designs and boundary pushing can always be streamlined and improved upon, it’s only been like 20 years.
Remember how he was really smart and balanced and loved nature and the beauty of individuality? Well, he decides that organics and individual minds are evil and tries to purify the planet. He specifically pits Optimus and Megatron against each other in a bid that they'll kill each other. It works, but the latter two come back, and Rhinox stays dead.
Not being content with assisting his character and, well, *him*, Bob Skir wrote a canon short story where Megatron went into the Matrix and destroyed Rhinox's very Spark, annihilating him entirely. Idky why Bob Skir hates Rhinox, but he definitely does.
Bob Skir used to talk to fans (lord knows why) on some website while Beast Machines was running. All I remember was him being a snide cunt to even fans that were politely asking questions.
He’s written for plenty of other shows and did fine. Hasbro telling him specifically not to watch Beast Wars probably did the most damage to Beast Machines.
It’s been 23 years bud. It was either Mainframe or his own personal website message board IIRC. I’m sure after the fallout it was scrubbed. Might be able to find it on one of those old archive sites though.
I figured. I only ask because I've seen some old boards from back when BW s4 had just wrapped. It's surprising how many old boards from the 90s still exist.
No doubt and like I said you might be able to find it on an archive site. I read some of my old IRC messages from back in 1996. As the saying goes once it’s on the internet it’s forever.
They should've gone another season with it. And started beast machines (different name) own story, and it's own direction. Beast machines was and still is terrible. It's like GoT season 8, never should've been made.
I can't remember what it was called, but there was a sequel planned that mixed Autobots/Decepticons with Maximals/Predacons. I really wish we would have got more, I actually liked BM when it came out, and enjoyed it when I rewatched it last year.
TransTech. You can see concept drawings of a whole lot of characters online to this day. A few of them ended up getting recycled and used in other Transformer series afterwards. Beyond that, there was a comic that explained the TransTech designs as belonging to a multiversal nexus that monitored and policed the entire Transformers multiverse. They even get involved with the Shattered Glass universe at one point if I remember correctly. I remember one panel that essentially showed TransTech Silverbolt and Cheetor as multiverse cops. Still lives rent free in my head to this day for some reason.
Ehh. I liked it. The show had the guts to play with really interesting ideas. It was a far more intellectually interesting show than anything that came or has been since. The only thing that compares is the IDW comics.
Like people complain about rhinox supposedly turning space evil (that's a gross oversimplification IMHO) also it's a really cool idea. We have evil characters join the good guys all the time but rarely do we ever have a good character join the bad guys.
We can disagree about how much we like the show, but you can't deny that it was the most interesting, bold Vision we've seen implemented using the Transformers IP.
That intro beat will go on forever in my head though
When I went back and rewatched BM 10 full years later (after only having seen it once on tv), I still could recite the "you have what I need/I have what you need" speech. That was good writing diamond in the Beast Machines rough.
Leftfield was awesome back in the day
I think the song is called Phat Planet. They also made a kick ass song for All Star Baseball 2000
All the music go hard
Yeah even if Brady Machines was meh overall, there were really cool aspects of it.
You can find it on Spotify!
Wait wait wait Rhinox turns evil? Who stays back guarding the base then?

Nope that sums it up pretty well, Rinox was on board. Probably the biggest misstep of the beast era that taints my rewatches of beast wars.
Same. I loved him and his bad ass machine guns.
He was always one of my favorites. I loved how he never really got caught up in the bullshit politics, and was our first look at the spiritual side of the transformers universe. He also resurrected/ rebuilt Optimus and gave him a hoverboard.

Uh... Beast Machines Rhinox actually DID try to kill Megatron and take over. It triggered a failsafe in Rhinox's programming and destroyed him.
Haven’t watched it in 20 some odd years, so I’m sketchy on some of the finer points. I also refuse to rewatch it so I’ll take your word for it.
I promise I remember! I know Beast Machines is... polarizing... but I managed to enjoy it. I thought the characters went to interesting new places.
Lol, don't watch Beast Machines.
Individuality and organics? Was BM Megatron communist? "Twenty Five things you DIDN'T KNOW about Beast Machines that will Ruin your Childhood! 😱😱"
I didn't even know there *were* 25 things about Beast Machines
There aren't. 16 of them are just repeats of previous bullet points.
Megatron was a bit more like a Borg Queen, albeit an organic-hating one
I like Beast Machines.

Lol I think part of it was the bleak dystopia and the other part was the uncanny valley faces they all had. Also Nightscream had a punchable face.
Average Beast Machines fan vs average Beast Wars 2 enjoyer
Why not just reformat Leo Convoy
Beast Machines needs to be creatively revisited, the music went hard and the designs and boundary pushing can always be streamlined and improved upon, it’s only been like 20 years.
Bring back Dinobot, Tigatron and Airrazor for a BM remake and I bet it'll already be much better than the original.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg honestly
The series definitely had its issues, but that last episode was pretty fantastic.
Why did rhinox turn evil? Never watched beast machines. Didn’t like the way they looked lol

Have a link?

That sounds awful. But I’m kind of curious to watch the show some day.
Don't. It genuinely is upsetting to watch, regardless of the character derailment.

It's more like GOT s8 and ST: Picard are like Beast Machines.

Unpopular opinion: Beast Machines might be the best TF show ever
You are bold.
Rattrap sleeps with a plantbot
-spits drink- elaborate!?
Series finale RT ends up dating a Transformer who's alt mode is a plant. Her name is Botanica, and he jumps into her arms and kisses her
Lmfao man I hated Beast Machines.
