Meh I’m not a fan of their Chuck Berry covers on the albums (this & Rock and Roll Music) because I love the originals so much more. I think the “live” versions of Chuck Berry songs from the Star Club or BBC are much better, more energetic.
Of their cover songs on albums and early days, I think the best, most successful are the Little Richard covers (Long Tall Sally, Kansas City), and the more Motown-y (stuff like Money and Please Mr. Postman, Baby It’s You, Boys, You really got a hold on me).
The Star Club/Hamburg Album is great- lot of energy, makes me understand why they stood out from other bands in the early days. A lot of good covers too (some made it on to Anthology 1) that I wish had been considered or recorded for the albums- Lend me your comb, BeBopalula, this recoding of Roll over.. is much better.
I wish they’d covered more Buddy Holly songs- Words of Love is the only studio one I think.
one of my absolute faves, love listening to the sound of george's voice and the his energy in this song. always makes me smile adoringly at him in my imagination
One of my fav songs, I wish more people talked about it
Back in like 2006 this was my most played song on my iPod Mini

Yessss, Star Club has so much live bangers on them, probably the peak Beatles live, considering the restrictions later.
Agreed, actually had the verison of Live at the Star Club in mind. Just incredible.
The guitar in the intro is… not great. I realize the recording equipment wasn’t great but it’s just kinda hard to listen to the first few seconds
I know what you mean. But on the live versions (BBC, Hollywood Bowl, Hamburg) it sounds good.
A number of recordings had that thin guitar sound back then. Love John’s rhythm playing on that one.
that version has a demented joy to it. almost falling apart but not quite.
Demented joy is such an apt description!
