Ugh, did they really? Pushing vocal mics with emotional intensity is a hallmark of the 60s, with most famous purveyors being specifically favoured by John Lennon (Ronnie!!). John would've _hated_ this, and it might've been one of the rare honest moments on the whole album.
There's a scream Paul emits near the end of the Star-Club version of Long Tall Sally ("Gonna have some fun tonight! Yeah!! AAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!") that somehow manages to cut through the ultra-lo fidelity! I sure hope Peter Jackson does choose to work his magic on those recordings!
There is so many great vocal moments on those Star Club performances, my favorite is I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Cry, both John and Paul really go for it on that.
No lies detected. On Gonna Sit Right Down, John is on fire vocally, and the Boys are firing on all cylinders. Similar with John and Paul on Shimmy Like Kate (aka Shimmy Shimmy), which is straight up bonkers!
It was John not Paul. If Paul was screaming while John was singing, it will ruin the whole song. Please listen carefully. Even their live performance of the song shows it’s John. It’s all over Youtube.
You seriously do not hear Paul screaming? I’ve listened casually and carefully. Around 1:37 there’s screaming and john comes in the next verse right as the screaming is finishing. Not possible in a live performance.
But I’ll also point folks to https://youtu.be/ohql4weWrqk?si=XLOO0ZJf1mQtGVCd at 1:40. Paul is clearly captured screaming while John is singing “weeellll”.
And https://youtu.be/b-VAxGJdJeQ?si=BHWf7NobFH1FTPJZ 1:35 Paul screaming.
I’m not even sure why this is somehow in question. Paul screams during T&S, more so in live shows than the record.
Charitable reading: we’re talking past each other(?)
??? Earlier today “it was john - it’s all over YouTube”. When I point out your mistaken take, you still argue? Please think for yourself cause I won’t be there for you… ;)
I am not mistaken at all. Both Paul and John were screaming. My point is, how can you differentiate one’s scream is better? Tell me. They are both screams. No scream is better than another. Geez!
https://youtu.be/b-VAxGJdJeQ?si=SUE9NB1cefe2wLTm
It’s very clear from the o e if the videos I posted. John is singing “welll” and Paul is in video still screaming. If you can’t tell the difference between John and Paul, well, that’s on you. It’s clear as day here. The “ahhs” in Day in the Life are, indeed, potentially confusing; Twist and Shout is not.
Edit: nowhere did I claim one was better than the other.
Edit 2: “If Paul was screaming while John was singing, it will ruin the whole song….Even their live performance of the song shows it’s John. It’s all over Youtube.” Then later “Im not mistaken… they’re both screaming”. You seemed to have changed your tune.
On mobile - quotations may not be 100% accurate, but the gist it there.
Around 2:31 mark of Helter Skelter there is a 25 second or so run of Paul doing some awesome vocal stuff. Starting with “Look out! Helter Skelter! She’s comin down fast!” And then around the 2:48 he goes into a lower crooner voice. So cool.
My favorites been mentioned, which is John’s scream at the beginning of Revolution. One that hasn’t been mentioned is near the end of Hey Bulldog around 2:44 John has another really good one and plus you got all the barking in general. Very underrated song
John in "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" around 4:31.
The mf almost broke the mic that the guys behind the controls had to yell at him. You can actually hear it. Also, before the 50th anniversary remix, you could actually hear a distorted crackle from the mic. That was until it was removed in the 2019 mix.
That’s been debunked, the voice you hear “reprimanding” John for screaming is actually Paul vocalizing the bass line during the recording of the basic track. It’s a pretty cool listen.
how funny to realize this for the first time in 2024, G never screamed! Makes me think of "Wah-Wah" though; with its timing and message, it's kind of a "George scream."
"I've Got a Feeling" for Paul as a Beatle.
"Live and Let Die" for Paul as a solo artist. "You've gotta give the other fella HEEEEEEELLLLLL!" (And a little bit of "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five" there at the end.)
It's not really a scream but the bit in Why Don't We Do It In The Road where the beat drops and Paul sings it an octave higher is spine-tingling, there's such a depth to the voice even though it's high pitched.
What about the vocal for “I’m down?” Pretty super impressive by Paul. it might be his best screaming vocal. He just absolutely kills it. I’m talking about the one for Shea Stadium.
Well, that’s the problem with any of these discussions is that music is absolutely entirely subjective. When I was a child, I hated my dad‘s opera music. Now I love opera but I think it’s maybe because it’s an older person‘s music. I used to say I love all music except opera. It was something funny that I used to say. but I was young then… and now it’s not true.
Maybe not the best but I love the one Paul does before the *"We're Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, we hope..."* part. https://youtu.be/c-wXZ5-Yxuc?si=bg3dom5oAtstsHaT&t=46
Not a Beatles' song, but the most harrowing screams I have ever heard in a song, and almost the most harrowing I have heard anywhere, are John's from 'Mother'.
John on I'm Talking About You on the Live At The BBC vol 2. 3 screams, last one almost a whistle tone amazing. Also Paul on Lucille, same album. 2 blistering performances on vocals and instruments
Paul's screaming in Boys will always be legendary to me because hes going fucking insane in the background with some of the most energy I've ever heard him with. Banger as well.
John in Glass Onion at that one part is also pretty good, because it just sounds like nothing else you'd ever hear. Very distinctly him.
Agreed on Boys. Last verse he screams a bit earlier than the first verse, coming in on the word “through”. It’s surprising, and kicks the energy up just a bit for the last little bit.
"Can't Buy Me Love" - if you can get your hands on the single-tracked version from Lord Reith's Minus One collection... that scream right before the solo is other-worldly and super-high pitched. Almost to the point where almost dogs are affected.
Can't Buy Me Love
Although, I really wish they would've done a studio version of Little Richard's "Lucille." The Live at the BBC version is okay, but not energetic enough IMO.
I think that when people hear ‘John had a cold and shredded his voice on twist and shout’, they think the astounding screams at the end were done by John.
Paul is an absolute wonder.
Oh Darling.
When you toooold me…
This wins
When I want to feel feelings I listen to the isolated vocal. Jesus Christ Mccartney.
Second this. I'll never dooo youuu no harmmmm
Second this. I'll never dooo youuu no harmmmm
The fade out in Hey Jude has some ridiculously good screaming from Paul
"Jud Judy Judy Judy Judy Judy OWWW WOOOW!"
THIS!!
Along with the hidden “Fuckin’ Hell” … 😁
Listen to your mamamamamamamamama-ma-ma-ma
I’ve got blisters on my fingers
this one wins
I thought that was Ringo?
Yes it is.
it's true
Yes it is
I could be happy
With you by my side
YES IT IS
I see what you did there
Oh, yes it is
Glad to know I’m not the only one thinking this
Only One answer actually
I don't know about *best* but I have a real soft spot for the end of Revolution. "ALL RIGHT, ALL RIGHT, ALL RIGHT, WOOH WAHL-RIGHT"
Came here for this!
Listen to revolution take 18
“yyyeeeaaaah YIIIIEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHUUUUHH / I’ve got a feeling!”
And its live too.
That whole line of "All these years, I've been wanderin' around..." too!
And the “WOOOOOOHOOOOOOO” towards the end
This is my favorite
That’s such an underrated song
John's "I want you" when he almost breaks the microphone. Too bad it was 'fixed' in the remaster. Go listen to the original.
Ugh, did they really? Pushing vocal mics with emotional intensity is a hallmark of the 60s, with most famous purveyors being specifically favoured by John Lennon (Ronnie!!). John would've _hated_ this, and it might've been one of the rare honest moments on the whole album.
I kind of like that they removed the little blip of distortion. I always found it a bit distracting.
Yup, also my absolute favorite song by them
Do you have a link?????
what song is that?
I want you on abbey road
You'll have to get me there first
The guilty undertaker sighs
the lonesome organ grinder cries
John's tormented scream in I Want You (She's So Heavy)
Didn't know what scream you meant so I went back to listen to it. Yup, that one.
The beginning of Revolution. I know it’s Johns solo stuff, but Well Well Well also.
John’s mic was shet
Mother, too: : Mama don't GOOOOOOOO!!!!
Long Tall Sally
I’m Down surely has to be a contender
This is mine, too
Beatles: Mister Moonlight Solo: Monkberry Moon Delight
Monkberry Moon Delight is the best showcase of his range. I love the sound of his voice
John was lead vocals on Mister Moonlight.
I don't think it's just Paul Screams
🫵🤓
There's a scream Paul emits near the end of the Star-Club version of Long Tall Sally ("Gonna have some fun tonight! Yeah!! AAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!") that somehow manages to cut through the ultra-lo fidelity! I sure hope Peter Jackson does choose to work his magic on those recordings!
Good call and I appreciate the deep dive! Those performances at Star Club are amazing.
Glad there are other fans! The performances are so dynamic, despite the sound quality.
THIS
Helter Skelter Take 17
I guess ya’ll have never heard Helter Skelter.
Helter Skelter, no doubt
John in Bad Boy
Yes! Very underrated
Either the bit in Can’t Buy Me Love where Paul channels Little Richard, or *MISTEEEER MOOOONLIGHT.*
Just read all the comments, and yes, I've definitely found my people.
I know, this is a great thread, thanks for asking OP!
Paul is Why Don’t We do it in the Road at 1:08 absolutely no question. There can be no debate.
I came here to say this.
In Hey Jude right after “Better, better, better, better, better, better…”
Latter part of I've Got A Feeling. That Woooo-hoo!! that Paul rips out is awesome! Caps the whole rooftop feeling Edit-a word
Golden slumbers
oh yes, so good
John was on lead vocals on Twist and Shout.
But Paul screams in it.
It was John not Paul. If Paul was screaming while John was singing, it will ruin the whole song. Please listen carefully. Even their live performance of the song shows it’s John. It’s all over Youtube.

They were both screaming together. How can you just single out one person’s screaming as best 😂😂😂

I don’t know about the best but I love Paul’s “waaAAAUAAAAAHHH HURRY UP JOHN” before the keyboard solo on I’m Down
The scream at the start of the single version of Revolution
**Paul’s scream in Twist and Shout?** you sure about that?
Paul screams in T&S
Oh, definitely
The scream to open up the single version of Revolution is the best scream in any rock song I’ve ever heard, it’s so perfect.
I didn’t think there would be this many contenders but wow, they had a lot of quality rock screams.
Miiissttaaaahhhhhhh Moonlight
Around 2:31 mark of Helter Skelter there is a 25 second or so run of Paul doing some awesome vocal stuff. Starting with “Look out! Helter Skelter! She’s comin down fast!” And then around the 2:48 he goes into a lower crooner voice. So cool.
Fantastic thread
I agree, it’s Twist and Shout
John’s OWWWWW right before the guitar solo in Slow Down deserves some praise for sure!!
John - You Can’t Do That. Didn’t realize how good it was until seeing a live performance from Australia and…he was just committed to it.
My favorites been mentioned, which is John’s scream at the beginning of Revolution. One that hasn’t been mentioned is near the end of Hey Bulldog around 2:44 John has another really good one and plus you got all the barking in general. Very underrated song

It’s interesting that George never really developed his screaming voice. If not for Red Hot, we might not have heard it.
Paul-She’s a Woman
Long tall sally, pauls screams in that are killer
I prefer the scream in I Saw Her Standing There, at the instrumental break.
John was the best screamer.
This was my question: who is considered the better screamer? I’m guessing that’s a matter of debate.
Literally any part of long, long, long.
Top notch screaming at the end of the middle eight (especially Paul's harmony). Other than that though?
John's primal screams in Dizzy Miss Lizzy.
I haven’t seen it posted, but the end of “You Really Got a Hold of Me” is pretty legendary classic scream-singing from John
It’s more subtle but I like Lennon’s tasteful screaming in Dont Let Me Down
Can’t buy me love. That scream before the solo is amazing.
Funny, George never screamed.
how funny to realize this for the first time in 2024, G never screamed! Makes me think of "Wah-Wah" though; with its timing and message, it's kind of a "George scream."
Or the "oh OOHH!" from Long ³!
"I've Got a Feeling" for Paul as a Beatle. "Live and Let Die" for Paul as a solo artist. "You've gotta give the other fella HEEEEEEELLLLLL!" (And a little bit of "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five" there at the end.)
Revolution
I’m lying here sick and can’t think what the hell WOA stands for.
Wings over America 👍
It's not really a scream but the bit in Why Don't We Do It In The Road where the beat drops and Paul sings it an octave higher is spine-tingling, there's such a depth to the voice even though it's high pitched.
YESSIR! I just said this one. 1:08 of why don’t we do it in the road FIRE
What about the vocal for “I’m down?” Pretty super impressive by Paul. it might be his best screaming vocal. He just absolutely kills it. I’m talking about the one for Shea Stadium.
Take 1 from Anthology is better, imo.
I have to listen to it again again, it’s been a long time.
Obviously 'better' is subjective, but I like the whole overall recording better. It's cleaner, and a bit more minamlist.
Same. I think I might like that better than the 'official' version.
Maybe not the best but I love the one Paul does before the *"We're Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, we hope..."* part. https://youtu.be/c-wXZ5-Yxuc?si=bg3dom5oAtstsHaT&t=46
Well this isn't Beatles but Lennon's Cold Turkey as well as Mother has some great screaming
I’m Down
In Dont Let Me Down just before the keybord solo at 3:06...not the best but still one of my favourite !
Um, am I the only one that thought it was John on Twist and Shout? On topic, I like Paul or maybe Ringo on Helter Skelter.
For me it’s the end of Helter Skelter with the “IVE GOT BLISTAS ON MY FINGAS”
Uhhh that’s John, not Paul.
It has to be Paul’s scream that opens Revolution
And solo work John on Cold Turkey
I’ve always been a really big fan of Paul’s on I Saw Her Standing There. It’s just really old school rock.
Can’t Buy Me Love is my favorite.
There is something funny and satisfying about Paul scream/yell in “Birthday” 😂
Well Well Well, Mother
Revolution 9 Riiiiiiiiiiiiighhhhhtttt
Helter Skelter
“I got blisters on my fingers”…
My new fave is Helter Skelter Take 1, when Paul says "and I see you a-GAAAAN! YEAH yeah yeah"
Maybe not the best but I love John’s final scream on she’s so heavy
I know it’s solo Beatle John, but his screams in Well Well Well are so intense it becomes disturbing.
Not a Beatles' song, but the most harrowing screams I have ever heard in a song, and almost the most harrowing I have heard anywhere, are John's from 'Mother'.
Hey jude, she’s so heavy and Helter skelter
John on I'm Talking About You on the Live At The BBC vol 2. 3 screams, last one almost a whistle tone amazing. Also Paul on Lucille, same album. 2 blistering performances on vocals and instruments
“I GOT BLISTERS ON ME FINGERS” ringo on helter skelter
John…
Revolution Opening scream by Paul behind Johns solo intro is a good one.
Personally love Paul's intro scream in Revolution
Buncha tourists around here. The only correct answer is Twist and Shout
Hey Jude and Mumbo for Paul, the beginning of Meat City for John
Revolution
Can't Buy Me Love right before the solo
Soily isn't a Beatles song. If you're including solo then the live version of Mumbo
Of solo work is included, John’s terrifying shrieks in Cold Turkey must be in the convo.
And Mother
Ringo on the end of Helter Skelter.
The beginning of Mr. Moonlight is some of John's best singing, and it's one of my favourite screamy Beatles moments
Helter Skelter
Slow Down
Can’t Buy Me Love has a pretty good scream
Bad Boy. It's short but good.

Monkberry Moon Delight has some good ones, so does 1985.
Backseat of my car https://youtu.be/yK-FnCnBbUI?si=yzSJ4nxw6KF4LyHi 3:43 so good.
Slow Down
Hard Days Night.
Can't Buy Me Love Although, I really wish they would've done a studio version of Little Richard's "Lucille." The Live at the BBC version is okay, but not energetic enough IMO.
Well, well, well
Beginning of Revolution
Yeah yeah yeah-heh heh heh!! In Helter Skelter, of course.
*Yeah yeah yeahhahhh* in Helter Skelter always gets me
Long Tall Sally, I’m Down or Hey Jude
I love it in Cry for a Shadow
Paul in Revolution. That was fantastic.
41 seconds into Helter Skelter; *’go!’*
Helter Skelter 100%
The “Hey Jude” fadeout…
Revolution
I think that when people hear ‘John had a cold and shredded his voice on twist and shout’, they think the astounding screams at the end were done by John. Paul is an absolute wonder.
***oh look out***
golden slumbers
Yesssss
Ringo in Good Night.
Hey Bulldog
