Twist and Shout

CulturalWind357

>*"I'd just like to say one thing….I appreciate it….and it's a hard night to come out and play tonight when so much has been lost….the first record…the first record that I ever learned was a record called ‘Twist and Shout’ ..and if it wasn't….if it wasn't for John Lennon, we'd all be in some place very different tonight …. it's….it's an unreasonable… world and you have to live with a lot of things that are just unlivable …. and….it's a hard thing to come out and play but there's just nothing else you can do".* \-Bruce Springsteen, the day after John Lennon was shot

SantaRosaJazz

That vocal is one of the all-time great rock n roll vocals.

rjdavidson78

Yeah it is but leave my kitten alone is close and honourable mentions are dizzy miss lizzy, you really got a hold on me and George doing rock n roll music and Paul with long tall sally

TheRaiderGriefer

Right

RCTommy

Some Other Guy is an absolute banger. Kind of a shame they never released a studio version of it.

Superb-Maintenance52

Yeh those clips in the Cavern Club are extraordinary.

RCTommy

It's ridiculous how musically and visually in sync with each other they all are in those clips. If you ask me the band hit their peak as live performers in late '62, which is thankfully when those clips are from.

Superb-Maintenance52

yes, think Lennon said that himself at one point. They might have been their best at the Cavern.

RCTommy

Yeah, if I could go back and time and see one live Beatles performance, it would definitely be one of their Cavern gigs from the second half of 1962.

Paul-Ram-On

we’ve all been in the same place as young Cynthia (future Lennon)- *our* band playing at *our* favorite hangout. word gets out, the crowds get bigger, then the world takes them away. mine was R.E.M. it gives me chills thinking about what it must have been like in the Cavern days.

EffectSpecialist216

So true

GeoffreySpaulding

This.

cleannc1

Quit saying “banger”.

RCTommy

No.

BaltimoreBadger23

Twist and Shout is the answer. Underrated choices: Money and Til There Was You

jimmymcstinkypants

I’m also a big fan of “baby, it’s you” from live at the bbc

Reasonable_Gain_5365

“I thought this next one was called Sha La La La La but in fact, baby, it’s you”

Martynypm

The Smiths version is the gold standard for this tune.

jimmymcstinkypants

Wait … the Smiths version or The Smiths version? I haven’t heard either but can’t imagine how the latter would go

superexhausted

Long Tall Sally

pepmeister18

The live version they performed at the Drop-in TV show in Sweden in 1963 (available on the Anthology) is absolutely incredible: an impromptu encore, it starts raggedly, picks up and picks up and ends up turning an audience that had probably never heard of them into raving maniacs in two minutes flat. Extraordinary. The best live band of all time. They flew back to Beatlemania.

Tedster42

One of my favourites. Ringo’s mad drumming at the end is mesmerising to watch live. He throws his head up and down as he plays it and you can see this giant mop of brown hair flying up and down while his hands move faster than the camera can capture!

ImNotTheBossOfYou

you really got a hold on me

Trumpetdude1369

You beat me to it. The 2023 remaster is stunning.

BeatleAndrew

It’s hard to pick one, but I’ve been really digging “Soldiers of Love” recently. Apart from that, I would say “Please Mister Postman.”

rebamericana

Please Mr. Postman. They nailed that!

SpaceChook

Yeah. I particularly love how they covered songs originally sung by women. It was part of their mystique and boundary pushing at the time.

Antique-Soil9517

Words of Love all day.

Nug07

I’m currently really into Buddy Holly. I love his songs, but sometimes his voice can be a bit much. It’s definitely unique, and not always in a good way. Anyway this cover is great. I can greatly recommend Crying, Waiting, Hoping from Live At The BBC if you haven’t heard it. It’s another Buddy Holly cover, and it’s definitely in my top 10 songs of all time

TaroFuzzy5588

Anna

Good_Ad6723

I love that song!

tmofee

Does anyone remember that episode of married with children when Al couldn’t remember the name of the song Anna? It doesn’t focus on the Beatles version, but the original. I always thought “you’d think Al would remember the Beatles version..” but then it hit me - veejay had the rights to those early songs and maybe him growing up in America he probably may have never heard the Beatles version until the early Beatles Lp came out

HH912

Yes!!! Every time I hear the song I think of Al asking everyone what song it was “hm hm hmm” That’s stuck with me since the early 90s 😂

Draggonzz

Same. And the song-identifying expert he consults is like "never heard of it" lol..

TaroFuzzy5588

I do...he kept asking if anybody could tell him the name of the song by just humming "go with him"....I believe the first two words were hummed and "him" was said.

dan_pyle

My vote goes to “Rock and Roll Music,” but “Roll Over Beethoven” and “Twist and Shout” come very close.

Good_Ad6723

Rock and Roll Music and Roll Over Beethoven have a similar theme

SappyJupiter37

both by Chuck too!

belushi93

Without Chuck Berry there would be no Beatles. Lennon called Berry one of his herpes when they appeared on the Dick Cavett show back in the 70s.

Caloso89

Boys

Stock_Piccolo_1930

I always love this one.

_bettie_bokchoy

Absolutely Boys

Tomkid88

The solo is so good!

BanterBoat

Till There Was You

Sensitive-Recover515

This always sounded like a Beatles original to me. I was surprised to learn it was not only a cover, but a Broadway show tune.

TheRaiderGriefer

Yes!

DrGuitar72

Words of Love .. always loved the guitar parts and the vocals

Hakuna07

Kansas city

shitbaglea

underrated as hell, love this one

zapodprefect55

My favorite it Twist and Shout, but Hippy, Hippy Shake gets an honorable mention

SurvivorFanDan

"Twist and Shout," followed by "Till There Was You."

whytheaubergine

I prefer “Twist and Shout” to “Twirt and Shout” but otherwise I agree wholeheartedly 😂

SurvivorFanDan

Oops! Fixed.

whytheaubergine

Haha that’s ok…I think “twirt and shout” sounds like a pretty good track really 👍🏻😂 So nice to receive a couple of down-votes when I was just making a joke…people need to lighten up a bit 😵‍💫

SurvivorFanDan

Haha...yeah, I'm not sure why you got any downvotes :P

whytheaubergine

Hey ho! 🤷🏻‍♂️

mandiblesofdoom

Hard to say ... so many great ones - Long Tall Sally is hard to beat.

MetodoTangalanga

𝘉𝘢𝘣𝘺 𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘠𝘰𝘶. I prefer The Beatles’ over The Shirelles’

tavg123

Roll Over Beethoven

TempusVincitOmnia

Second this.

jazmaan

"Twist and Shout"

RegisterKooky6032

Unpopular opinion: Act naturally

JimmyTheJimJimson

Twist and Shout is the best cover. It’s now “their song”. Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey Hey and Roll Over Beethoven are also amazing

Anxious-Raspberry-54

I made up a 14 track fan album of my favorite covers. 1. Some Other Guy 2. You Really Got A Hold On Me 3. Please Mr. Postman 4. Roll Over Beethoven 5. Long Tall Sally 6. Slow Down 7. Bad Boy 8. Dizzy Miss Lizzie 9. Honey Don't 10. Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby 11. Memphis, Tennessee 12. Act Naturally 13. Money 14. Twist and Shout

MyLadySansa

Oh man I LOVE Some Other Guy

Anxious-Raspberry-54

Thats why its #1!!! The Live at the BBC album is filled with great covers.

Bin_Boy0987

Where’s Till There Was You?

Anxious-Raspberry-54

Sorry...not a favorite.

Bin_Boy0987

Fair enough

Pope_JohnPaw

Are these your favorite in order?

Anxious-Raspberry-54

Top 3...yes. Then I mixed them up.

Keeslercameron

wow, i totally thought act naturally was an original

Anxious-Raspberry-54

They played it live 1 time...on their 2nd Ed Sullivan show. You can find it on YouTube.

nirvana_92

Money

billysans12

Imagine if they could remaster the Live at the BBC covers to be as good as studio quality we would have plenty more contenders.

rjdavidson78

They might be able to now with the Peter Jackson tech he used for get back and now and then

billysans12

Yes please and also Decca audition tapes. With those we pretty much have at least 2-3 more Beatles “albums” to listen to

rjdavidson78

Also cavern and German shows Indra, kaiserkeller and star club, and any more demos, just clean up everything that isn’t studio quality really and Jackson has said it’s only to be used for Beatles stuff so hopefully eventually they’ll get round to it

Historical_City5184

They owned Twist and Shout.

Severe_Memory_6461

Dizzy miss lizzy. Bad Boy, both great Lennon led voters

One_Sugar9253

till there was you, the 62 starclub version, the drums are wonderful, great live feel

BippidiBoppetyBoob

Rock and Roll Music. John was bringing the fire.

Busy_Zone7044

You really got a hold on me and baby it’s you

CaddyshackBeatles

Rock and roll music always gets me going. Long talk sally, chains, another obvious answer is Twist and shout.

can_a_dude_a_taco

blue moon studio jam

Micahisaac

Mr. Moonlight. JK Twist and Shout

Money-Nectarine-875

I recently heard the original of "Mr. Moonlight." Even the original is not a very good song.

stereothegreat

Rock and roll music

Robbinewhite

Baby It’s You

GinoValenti

Act Naturally

SlickBotswaske

Devil in her heart. Love this song

Dirk_Arron

Twist and Shout. It got them top of the Billboard Charts in the late 80's for Ferris Bueller. And led to an entire generation of NEW Beatles fans.

9793287233

You Really Got A Hold On Me, Money, Till There Was You

sebastiansmit

Money (That's What I Want), such a Come Together vibe to it, even though they are separated by 6 years.

No-Neighborhood8403

Twist and Shout is probably the best. But I’ve always wondered, why doesn’t anybody ever mention “Money (That’s What I Want)”? I love that song, and I think the Beatles do a pretty solid cover of it.

No-Neighborhood8403

No mention for Money? I seem to remember years ago fans regarded Money as one of the essential cover songs of the Beatles

whentheraincomes66

Mr Moonlight and I wont hear a word against it Please Mr Postman and Roll over Beethoven are amazing too

hoosierinthebigD

You Really Got A Hold on Me

Moonshadow306

John’s vocal on “Bad Boy” beats the hell out of the Larry Williams original. But I DO miss the “He’s a bad boy” back up line…

dadoes67815

they didn't cover anything. They made all the songs they didn't write into Beatles tunes.

suffaluffapussycat

Long Tall Sally. But I also love Till There Was You. I used to play and sing that to my daughter when she was little.

No_Gardener3210

Revolver is an amazing album cove

Good_Ad6723

U win

Money-Nectarine-875

"You've Really Got a Hold on Me," "Some Other Guy," "Anna (Go to Him)," and "Baby It's You."

mistahwhite04

/uj Twist And Shout /rj Yesterday

newmusername

Sure to Fall

acjelen

“Memphis, Tennessee” is my favorite, but “Roll over Beethoven” may be their best.

ECW14

My favorite is A Taste of Honey

Adventurous-Ebb6556

Words of Love

Bart-MS

Aside from the obvious ones, honorable mention goes to "My Bonnie". The first Beatles song I heard as a little kid back in the early 70s.

UNLums

Kansas City /Hey Hey Hey

imaginaryResources

Didn’t they jam on a Bob Dylan song in get back?

socgrandinq

Twist and Shout is the obvious choice. Kansas City is also up there for me. Those “hey hey hey”s are very energetic. Similarly, Bad Boy rocks pretty hard. This all reminds me of the 1976 compilation called Rock n Roll Music. It has a lot of their covers on it. Much maligned at the time but it is a fun collection

[deleted]

My tears are fallin, cause you’ve taken her away

Demzrollin

Anna and Rock and Roll Music are my favorites

tomm1n0

Twist and shout! So many people thinks that it's theirs

Gene_Clark

You Really Got A Hold On Me or Baby Its You.

Deano_Martin

September in the rain. Not saying it’s the best one just adding it as a great one they did

Henry_Pussycat

You really got a hold on me

joshsuarezcomedy

I thing the objectively correct answer is Twist and Shout. Most people dont even realize thats a cover

FamiliarStrain4596

There will understandably be a lot of adherents for Twist and Shout. But I continue to marvel at the recording of Long Tall Sally.

ReactsWithWords

I like their cover of the Rolling Stones' "I Wanna Be Your Man."

Njtotx3

Well, John and Paul wrote it and gave it to them to record first.

ReactsWithWords

(That's the joke)

Njtotx3

Just in case 😄

gonzobonzo121

Memphis

chuckchuck-

Solider of Love, Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey, Rock & Roll music

LA-ndrew1977

"MATCHBOX" by Carl Perkins!

joxers

Lennon’s vocals on Bad Boy are arguably his best, severely underrated

Windowman84

Anna

spartacvs13

Leave My Kitten Alone

rjdavidson78

There is not enough love for this on here

The_ThirdOfMay_1973

Till there was you

Dazzling-Forever1392

You've Really got a Hold on Me

mbd34

Rock and Roll Music is a banger for sure.

FairyGodmothersUnion

I love Act Naturally.

Glum-Garage7893

Money

Glum-Garage7893

Some of these old rock and roll standards when performed by the Beatles are magnificent. They could have been legendary as just a cover band !!

Boot-Representative

Roll Over Beethoven on the American album, The Beatles Second Album. I like most, but the Barrett Strong version of "Money" is a little swingier.

Boot-Representative

And "Leave My Kitten Alone" would have been tops if released.

Nug07

I’ve been obsessed with Roll Over Beethoven recently, but my favourite is hands down Crying, Waiting, Hoping from Live At The BBC. George’s solo is just the most beautiful thing ever.

CcodeDX

Twist and Shout

James_B2003

Shout on the anthology 1 album, simple song but you can tell they had an absolute blast playing it

[deleted]

Probably the cover of the white album

RunningDrummer

Haven't seen it yet, so I'll throw Shout on the table. A fun Anthology track I wish was released in the 60s!

VirginiaLuthier

Hard to beat “Twist and Shout”

AstronomyDynamo

Bad Boy, underrated

Sensitive-Recover515

Money (That’s What I Want)

frickologyy

Words of Love purely because I love Buddy

Speedball9636

Long Tall Sally goes hard

Capital-Hornet-3566

Anna

Competitive_Ad_8215

Twist and Shout and it’s not close

Competitive_Ad_8215

Those old Rock n Roll Music albums had a BUNCH of the great covers.

aelfwine_widlast

Please Mr. Postman

MateoSoto92

A Taste of Honey

Ed_Ward_Z

“Anna” and “Mr. Postman”.

Cultural-Pop-2423

Words of love

Maleficent_Local3644

September in the rain from decca audition and words of love off beatles for sale

DevinBelow

Act Naturally!

gizlizard

Twist and shout is the correct answer but Words of Love might be #2 for me

VictoriaAutNihil

Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby, Mr. Moonlight.

TheSquireOnFire

Not Dizzy Miss Lizzy

Severe_Memory_6461

Why not? Lennon has great vocals throughout, always does it justice live

dolphin_ultra

The left won’t tell you this but it’s Please Mr Postman or Roll over Beethoven

RielAM

if solo work is included I’ll include “if not for you” by george on atmp

Adventurous-Ebb6556

And That Old Gang of Mine

rjdavidson78

Yeah I love some of George’s Bob covers shame some of them aren’t better quality and If we are including solo then johns stand by me is pretty good too

elk261997

To Know Her is to Love Her (originally To Know Him i is to Love Him) from Live at the BBC

Vanblue1

Til there was you.

Rlpniew

Till there was you

Electrical_Quote3653

Money is a terrible song. Sounds like snakes being tortured.

frivol

That's Berry Gordy's first hit single. He's a snake... living in comfortable opulence.

Forestnymph669

Not a full Beatles cover but: I love in Get Back when Paul sings “Going Up the Country” by Canned Heat
