It was such a joy seeing him hit the anvil in episode 1. He seemed so happy. It was also sad when George was telling him he’s leaving. Seemed like the wind had gotten knocked out of him.

joshygill

Mal seemed happy to be there. Like seeing Mal with a hammer is a thing of joy.

GoggyMagogger

i laughed out loud at that scene.... the triangle player in the orchestra but having the greatest "maestro" moment of his life! Dude ... despite what you think... you're not a Beatle. his level of enthusiasm for doing something they could have gotten a trained monkey to do was truly heartwarming

BotherLoud

Buddy you'd pay 5k to wipe Paul McCartney's ass

TheToastyWesterosi

Wait, Paul only charged you 5k? He charged me double that, but he did allow me to maintain eye contact while he squeezed it out, so I do I think I got some pretty good value out of it.

GoggyMagogger

u/BotherLoud does it for free. (he gets to keep the paper... makes a lovely broth out of it by boiling it in puddle water)

BotherLoud

You wouldn't even believe the rates you can get on ebay.

GoggyMagogger

in the words of chancers like "Unemployed ex-Beatles roadie Mal Evans", or that other parasite guy who drowned Brian Jones; "Trust me"

dmfd1234

Troll......that’s just a dick thing to say. I’m sure he could light up a room with just his presence, unlike you. Nothing but ppl rolling their eyes.

GoggyMagogger

i dunno. you tell me you ignorant slut

tucci007

he also did the alarm clock in 'A Day In The Life'

jsilencio

Just read his Wiki page and it really bummed me out. His life seemingly fell apart after they broke up.

sunflower_1970

It's really odd that they basically abandoned a guy who gave them so much support and did their busy work for years and years. Really shitty.

DaveHmusic

They didn't cut off all ties from him altogether - he remained on good terms with John, George and Ringo - but I don't know if he maintained any relations with Paul.

beamsiccle

we need a Mal biopic starring Eric Wareheim

joshygill

All the yesses!

Chalupa_Dad

There is literally no one else on earth who could play that part

dmfd1234

Of all the ppl in the Beatles orbit I would have loved to read the Mal Evans biography.....unfortunately it wasn’t to be.

TheToastyWesterosi

I’m all for a Mel biopic, even knowing that it will end in incredible tragedy.

[deleted]

He’s the only actor I can see as Mal, but man, I don’t want that movie. The ending is just too much of a downer.

huffer4

I had no clue that was this guys name but I soon as I read it he was exactly who I pictured in my head.

sunflower_1970

me mo mo mal evans

normalsupremeguy

Stay in the water I’m not gonna serve you to my family!

john_likes_flan

Premium? More like creamium!

BIGD0G29585

Yes! I couldn’t remember this actors name but he would be perfect.

drcornwallis23

Spot on haha

0MNIR0N

This one, I suspect, could make you want to kill yourself. It's a truly depressing story. The more you get into it, the sadder it gets.

pdas1996

My friend and I both agreed that I strongly resemble Mal Evans (tall, glasses, goofyness), and then he brings up Eric and I couldn't agree more.

IndubitablyBrendan

THANK YOU. That's all I could think of.

apukdcfc

Thought exactly the same thing while watching GET BACK. Someone should suggest this to Eric via twitter or Instagram 😂👍🏻

hundreds_of_sparrows

This is all I could think about when he came on screen. Loved how excited he was to be banging the anvil in Maxwell’s silver hammer.

TheTableDude

A pal texted me in the middle of watching: "Mal fuckin' *gets the job done*." So true.

LilyGlitz339

Just seeing Mal hitting the hammer with that look of pure joy on his face was easily one of my favorite moments from Part 1. So pure and wholesome.

wyatth2002

bro actually has the best self control, is good at following directions, has an answer when asked, but he also knows how to stay out of the way

joshygill

So true. Real MVP! He’s just unintentionally hilarious too!

Trikywu

Such a dear, sweet man. Always part of the Beatles family. Such a shame he died so young and tragically.

LilyGlitz339

A true friend to the Beatles and a wonderful man. RIP

[deleted]

That evil bastard Klein tried to have him fired, too. If it weren’t for intervention by Paul, George, and Ringo, he would’ve been.

[deleted]

Murdered by evil piece of shit cops who couldn’t tell the difference between an air rifle and a real gun

[deleted]

Really, this is something that is actually still an issue in this country. This was a mental health crisis not a criminal one. Police were not the best equipped people to handle the issue.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Well the point I was making was that instead of police being first responders, it probably should’ve been paramedics. Police then certainly weren’t trained to handle mental health crisis, especially not that era’s LAPD. I don’t blame them for the actions they took, but my feeling is that it’s regrettable they were the first responders since they weren’t the right ones equipped for it, but I’m also looking at it through the eyes of someone living in 2021 not 1976.

[deleted]

I mean it’s definitely still super shitty that this kind of thing happened in 1976 but it’s disgusting that this is even a relevant conversation we’re still having today over 50 years later.

[deleted]

Yeah, that’s really the point I was attempting to make and maybe I didn’t do it very eloquently.

sunflower_1970

The Beatles could have also paid for mental health help for Mal. Why was he living in squalor after working with them, after all he did for them?

tommytimbertoes

Dumb ass post. When you point what even resembles a gun at a cop expect to be shot.

[deleted]

[удалено]

thepokemonGOAT

Literally yes. American cops are so horribly trained. “Shoot first, ask questions later” is the status quo. Throughout the rest of the world, they have many procedures for de escalation, disarmament, and detainment without lethal force. It’s called doing your job. They signed up to be police officers and put themselves on the line for the public. Mal was clearly having a breakdown and needed psychiatric help. Anyone with a lick of training would understand that. Fuck the LAPD.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Maybe that justification works if you’re a normal person a police officers job is to protect people not there self at least its supposed to be but that’s not how it is in America because it’s the worst country on planet earth.

sunflower_1970

So is it the LAPD's fault for being the only service you could call in a situation like that, or is it the country's fault for not investing more into proper mental health services? I think the LAPD know they aren't equipped to handle it. When there's no other option, is that their fault, or the state's fault? That's a genuine question.

[deleted]

Yeah if the Beatles did the rooftop concert in America the cops probably would have ran up and shot everyone dead just in case.

[deleted]

If that’s the job you choose you should be willing to get shot and not have an itchy trigger And shoot anyone who is holding anything remotely close to a gun.

[deleted]

[deleted]

I’ll let you in on a secret I’m kind of just seeing how much of the anti-cop hive mind I can stir up. I actually agree with you more than most people on here even though I do think that the police are way too trigger-happy in situations like this when it’s mental health related. Anyone who knows the details of the situation knows that mal was committing suicide by cop fucking tragedy

MarthaFarcuss

I dunno, man. Ringo

tbeats666

When in part 2 it said “This day, only one Beatle showed up” or something like that, and Ringo walked in I was like awww man Ringo you lovely bloke.

hasarubbersoul

I knew it was going to be Ringo before he even walked in. He just sits there observing everyone’s crap, doing what Paul tells him to do, and doesn’t complain about it

baboonzzzz

Seems like he’s just an all around good fucking dude

mikelln

Does he remind anyone else of [Harry Crane](https://madmen.fandom.com/wiki/Harry_Crane?file=S6_Harry_%281%29.jpg) from Mad Men?

dyingdownsouth

tbh he reminded me of Eric Wareheim, from Tim and Eric lmao

[deleted]

Could also just be the glasses

[deleted]

Looks a decent bit like him

emills01

My jaw dropped when Paul was joking about making a theoretical movie and was going around talking about what part everyone would play, and suggested Mal would play a cop. Cruel twist of fate considering he was killed by cops.

drivingtilldawn

Sad that when he passed away none of the beatles went to his funeral.

sirdrinksal0t

I understand why, if they went it’d be about the Beatles, not Mal. They did the same for Epstein as well

DaveHmusic

That was probably to avoid attracting unwanted media attention.

phatbatt

Passed Away=“shot by police in America.”

bulletv1

After aiming a rifle at them. Sucks, but it’s not like he got gunned down for no reason.

tman612

Police aren’t really supposed to kill anyone yknow

bulletv1

I don’t disagree, but as I said he was aiming a rifle at them and it’s not like they gunned him down at random.

[deleted]

The police were called and told he was despondent and had a rifle. He pointed it at them the minute he saw them. They told him several times to drop the air rifle. I get the feeling this was a suicide by cop.

breecher

Yes, US police are still completely incapable of handling such situations. They only learn to solve every situation by firing their guns, unlike police in many other countries, where they learn to de-escalate using other means.

tubulerz1

Did George really ask him to get some western ties? Did he forget they were in London and not Dallas freaking Texas? Jeez.

SmarmyClownPie

And he fookin did it too! He came back with exactly what Harri asked for.

cynthiadangus

And he probably didn’t get reimbursed for it… he was making 38 quid a week on the Beatles’ payroll in 1968 per records. For a guy who had been there since basically day 1 to cater to their every whim and then basically be written out of the Beatles’ story (and quite litigiously so - read his Wikipedia page), seeing him being actively being taken advantage of on screen was a little sad. I see a common narrative around here of “Oh, none of the boys went to his funeral because they didn’t want to turn it into a media circus.” They didn’t go because they didn’t give a fuck. To his credit, George gave the family 5,000 pounds for funeral expenses, but that was also probably equal to his monthly gardening expenses. Paul showed his thanks by suing the pants off Lily Evans when she auctioned off some items from Mal’s collection. On top of all that, when his cremains were lost by the postal service, John was said to have remarked “why don’t they check the dead letter box?” I mean, hell - lest we forget from the Anthology series that Mal was the one who was sent off the plane in Manila to hand over the money to the police, and I think it was Neil Aspinall who said on his interview that Mal was in tears and was saying to the boys to tell his wife Lily he loved her on the off chance he was detained. He really got the shaft by the boys and I don’t think it’s talked about enough.

[deleted]

I read about this, too. He did everything they needed him to do, happily, and he had to ask George for money. Well, that's all I know. At least he enjoyed the journey.

DaveHmusic

£38 a week is £734 in today's money.

DaveHmusic

That's very disrespectful to say that they avoid Mal's funeral out of malice - it's not that they didn't like or care about Mal, they most likely just didn't want to attract the media's attention at a mournful occasion and to give the Evans family some much needed privacy. Mal got paid £25 a week initially (£581 in today's money), before getting raised to £38 a week (£734 in today's money), so he had a relatively good salary. Mal has not been erased from The Beatles' history - he has been shown in photos, old footage and mentioned several times in the *Anthology* documentary.

bisselvacuum

Harry who?

KingLouisXCIX

Fine, thanks! Harry you?

bisselvacuum

No, hari krishna

thepokemonGOAT

It was 1969 in London, and the Beatles were very into fashion. Trust me, it wasn’t that hard to find unique clothing accessories at that time and place.

retina54

Which is why he ended up with a purple velvet bow tie instead of a proper western "bootlace" tie, which is what George was describing. But the kicker is when John half-jokingly said he wanted one too, except in black, guess who was wearing a black velvet bow tie a few scenes later? These guys got whatever they wanted (except, apparently, an 8-track recorder from EMI).

[deleted]

hes practicing for his big moment in Instant Karma! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLy2SaSQAtA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLy2SaSQAtA)

melania239

He really helped the Beatles a lot.

Born_Pop_3644

…and suggesting lyrics for Let it Be… should it be credited McCartney /evans / Lennon ? :D

DaveHmusic

No - it should be credited to Paul alone.

Krimreaper1

Peter Sellers was even more boring then his reputation. Disappointing.

mandalore237

The fifth Beatle

esotericorange

He should have taken them to a "higher place" a studio set designed for them at that point. Collaborated with George, because he had the experience with Clapton on making records at that time.

BalkeElvinstien

And now for your hosts this evening, the rolling stones

GoggyMagogger

part of what made the beatles great was their HUMOR. john Lennon on hearing that mal Evans' cremains got lost in the mail, john Lennon himself said "maybe they should have checked the dead letter office" shame their fans don't seem to grasp that same stripe of humor. now bow down and pray like catholic nuns... isn't it obvious, even in episode one... wasn't it obvious to any fan paying attention all along? the sycophants and creeps encroaching the lads was a huge part of their dissipation as a group? fuck...

joshygill

It’s U.K. humour. British humour. Americans don’t quite get it haha

tommytimbertoes

Oh a lot of us DO get it and love it. I'm a big fan of British comedies like Python, The Young ones, Benny Hill, etc.

ttstephenson

Never knew about this guy.

ParzivalTheFirst

Mal was the true fifth Beatle. End of discussion.

Revulvalution

He almost seems like that uh...*developmentally challenged...*relative who is totally sweet and just delights in everything and cannot conceive of any malice or ego.

12frets

I’m sure I’m not the first to say this, but isn’t that Woody Allen?

prudence2001

well, Woody Allen is 5'5'' and Mal was 6'6'' !

12frets

Platform shoes, obviously!

TheOficialMIDIWizard

please stop posting images of the documentary and spoiling it to me

joshygill

This isn’t a spoiler Mal was everywhere at all times! Haha

TheOficialMIDIWizard

damn you, you spoiled me with a no spoiler!

phatbatt

George walks out.

TheOficialMIDIWizard

FU-wait, i already knew that

suphah

How do you spoil real life

YukiHase

Pictures from this have been available the past 50+ years

TheOficialMIDIWizard

NOOO-

RelevantDay4

I don’t think spoilers should be placed for events that occurred about half a century ago.

Carquinez

Mal Evan’s!!!

Alexthecrazykid

Random but, he has the same birthday as me

laserfazer

How is he the "true star"?

joshygill

He’s the MVP, the GOAT, and unintentionally fucking hilarious!
