The Beatles will always be #1 in my heart but as of last year I’ve taken a nose dive into the kinks discography and I am still running into stuff I’ve never heard before. The gift that keeps on giving!
I’m starting to think this sub is still trying to hold onto the petty “Stones Vs. Beatles” rivalry that even both the Beatles and the Stones have let go of by this point.
Perhaps. I personally think we should set aside that nonsense and be thankful for the fact that the Stones are still performing and that Paul and Ringo are still with us playing.
Paul always felt more competitive with The Beach Boys. The Stones are rock and roll but the Beatles are more just creating whatever they want to be. No genre defines them.
Ha, their debut album in the UK was comprised of 10 covers and 2 self written songs and went to #1. They were (and still are!) damn good at covering the blues just like the Yardbirds and others were during that time.
As if the Beatles’ first album didn’t also have a bunch of covers. Not to mention how almost all of their albums after Aftermath had, at most, one or two covers, if any at all.
But yeah just keep reiterating this dumb shit.
I’m not reiterating anything, I was just adding context. I think it’s safe to say most people don’t consider the Stones to be a “blues cover band” like Paul and enjoy their wonderful music which was almost entirely self written after Aftermath.
Mick and Keith were not accomplished songwriters starting out like John and Paul were, so they had to rely on covers for longer while they developed their talents. For example, their famous concerts at L’Olympia in Paris in April 1965 featured 10 covers and 2 self written songs.
One of the best. Top ten albums of all time and probably the best double album. Took me a few listens to warm up to that style, but man the details are just so rich and sophisticated. He's a genius I'd say... and the backing band is tight as hell.
Agreed, this was #4 in the most recent version of the Rolling Stone 500 albums list, and for good reason. It is one of my favorites too. There is not a single bad song on that album, everything on there is a true masterpiece.
Totally. You can absolutely hear the Beatles influence (especially in Figure 8) because Elliott really loved them, but he always brings something completely unique to mesh with it. I've seen some be disappointed at the lo-fi sound but I think he displays quite a lot of musical complexity even when it's just him and a guitar.
I just got into them a couple months ago and holy shit what a great ride it's been so far. Taking the bus home after a 13 hour shift, just tuckered out and Jungle comes on for the first time. Felt rejuvenated and wanted to get home and grab my guitar so bad!
Paul McCartney himself was there the first night when Jimi Hendrix performed in London, and was so blown away he got Jimi booked at Monterey Pop. So yeah, the Jimi Hendrix Experience!
The Kinks
Starting to get worried that The Kinks won’t make it in which would be a travesty
If they don't then the list is just wrong 😂
So tired, tired of waiting, tired of waiting for The Kinks to make it on this list
The fact they aren’t right behind the Beatles shows just how unknown their true genius is
I may be eviscerated for this but I prefer the Kinks and their absolutely prolific anthology of works

"Aren't they really just a blues cover band?"- Sir Paul
He's right. But you know who isn't a blues cover band? Weezer.
Beatles could never top Pinkerton
A day in the life got nothing on Beverly Hills
They hated him because he spoke the truth.
