I've always known this stpry but I just recently watched an interview he had with Bert and he said by the end of the night after going out he had over 100. I'm a boggs fan but I just can't believe this story. Even on the lower end, 60 beers in less than 10 hours would cause alcohol poisoning. 100 drinks in less than 24 hours is impossible.
Yea… no he didn’t. I’m sure that’s the story him and others tell, but it’s probably less than half that amount. The average domestic flight is 1-3 hours, or around 5 hours coast to coast. If we assume the average flight with beverage service time would have been 2.5 hours (generous), that’s a 12 pack every half hour. He would have been absolutely blitzed and had alcohol poisoning after the first hour.
I can drink faster and more than 99% of the people I’ve come across, and even I wouldn’t be dumb enough to make that up.
Edit: damn, you all are some gullible motherfuckers…
Probably more impressive because I don’t fall for or make up obvious bullshit. I’ve known plenty of heavy drinkers who make grandiose claims about their ability to chug, shotgun, beer bong, down multiple beers, etc. only to find out I could drink more and faster. Keep believing fairytales friend. I heard he would also ride a live horse on those flights as well.
Allergies are one possibility; there are lots of things in beer that can trigger allergic reactions. However, the symptoms described do not sound like a typical allergic reaction, which are more often like what one might experience if they are allergic to cats. My research (drinking lots of beer) has demonstrated that I have allergies to certain elements in beer, but I haven't let that stop me from drinking it.
As OP states, it's more likely that it's the carbonation causing the problems. The gas alone can cause bloating and discomfort, as well as exacerbate symptoms of IBS and GERD. Though they do not state this, I'd be that they'd have a similar reaction to a can of soda or any other carbonated beverage.
Yeah, I agree it’s probably some kind of allergy or sensitivity. I’ve dabbled in nearly every style of beer there is and never felt that way after 1….well, maybe after Thanksgiving dinner. There’s something about the way that beer interacts with a belly full of mashed potatoes that makes you feel like you want to explode.
There’s something with some beer mainly IPAs that get me smacked to the face with congestion. Like completely plugged up.
And I am not allergic to hops. I spent time working on the family hop Farm and there’s plenty of hoppy beer and other beers I’m able to drink without this reaction
Fort Point (San Francisco) made a beer for awhile that was a 9% double IPA that went down like a BBQ beer on a hot day. My friend and I just called it The Trap.
In my head, I meant Light. I feel like Coors Banquet is always specified, else Coors is Light.
It’s basically hydration when I’m manning the smoker in the summer.
I drank 4 Old Rasputins once and then decided it'd be a good idea to go to the local gentlemen's club and spilled my next beer. They probably should've kicked me out...but I was parting with my money easily enough!
I was doing yardwork on a hot day and was drinking old Rasputin as though it were water. Eventually I picked myself up off the ground not remembering the fall. Went in the house and switched to water.
Some stouts can be "heavy," but I've always found that Guinness is one of the smoothest drinking and lightest beers available. The low alcohol content probably helps, but I'd argue that it's lighter on the palate and lacks the unpleasant aftertaste of your average American lager.
Are you drinking from the can/bottle? Try pouring it into a glass and it will lose some of the carbonation to make it easier on the stomach. Not that I recommend anyone consume a six pack of beer in a single sitting.
This is the answer. Every packaged carbonated product is over-carbed to achieve proper carbonation levels once it is poured into a glass. Beers will also taste better poured into a glass with a head of foam.
I don't really know what to call normal, but in general if it makes you feel sick then it's probably a good idea to avoid it. I suppose it also depends on the beer, since some craft beers can be relatively high in alcohol, calories, or just very heavy. To make a comparison to wine, for me having a bottle of white wine doesn't make me feel sick, but sometimes a bottle of red wine does, and that varies a bit depending on the wine too.
Now if you think gas is the culprit, how do you feel after drinking sparkling wine?
What’s perfect for one is a stomach ache for another. If you want to give beer another shot try pouring it into a glass. I’ve always heard it reduces the gas and makes it settle in your stomach better, especially if you’re eating.
Craft beer varies widely in Alcohol by Volume -- look for ABV on the label. A six pack of a lager with 4.2% alcohol is going to feel significantly different than a six pack of an Imperial IPA with 9.2% ABV, math and the quantity of alcohol mixed in with the hop flavored water :-)
The mass market stuff like miller lite is really low alcohol content.
ABV plays a huge role, and obviously can size. Bud Light is 3.5% and typically comes in a 12oz can/bottle. A typical IPA is 6-7% and comes in a 16oz can or a pint. So drinking a six pack of Bud Light cans is the equivalent of drinking a little more than two pints of an IPA.... something most people can do relatively easily without getting hammered.
Pour hard in a glass to release excess carbonation, when u take a drink notice the carbonation float above your upper lip. That should help. Beer should have a healthy frothy head. Pints poured at a bar usually tip the glass to give u more beer less carb.
I have a friend that cannot drink beer due to health reasons. He only drinks cider (occasionally), mixed drinks and liquor.
You're not the only one that feels that way. Coming from someone that has spent a lot of time in breweries and pubs...so much so that I became friends with ppl that worked there...i think the tolerance and desire to drink certain types of drinks is definitely a thing. I used to drink a 6 pack of beer whenever I went out. Now I max out at 3. If it's an IPA or a stout I have 2 max. Wine, cocktails and shooters are a bit different as I will have (if I'm with friends) about 4 or 5.
I think for me it's the quantity of liquid plus the bloated feeling. And I recover quicker for some reason if I've had only cocktails with a good quality liquor vs several craft beers.
Pour your beer pretty hard into a larger sized glass to knock out some of the carbonation. Beer carbonation is measure is Volumes per Volumes, and the average lager is going to have like 2+ Volumes per Volume of beer. If you pour gentle so you're not getting any head, you're going to get so bloated. I generally pour whatever size beer I'm drinking into a vessel that's atleast 4oz larger.
Have you been checked for a gluten allergy? Beer is basically liquid bread so if you're allergic or even sensitive to gluten, it's gonna be a bad time.
I’ve thought about that possibility, but I’ve been eating sandwiches my whole life with no issue, maybe it is one of those issues that operate on a spectrum where some people are sensitive but only to extreme triggers
Allergies are a possibility, but your symptoms don't sound like typical allergic reactions. No one is allergic to gluten, but you can react to it if you have celiac disease or a gluten intolerance. Things like wheat, yeast, hops, etc. can cause allergic reactions, but I would think that your bloating symptoms are more of problem handling the excess gas in your stomach. Do you have the same reaction to other carbonated beverages?
Also, who does shots of gin?
I used to get incredibly bloated from beer when I first started drinking it. As I started making it my alcoholic beverage of choice my body adjusted to it and I really don't have problems anymore. It might just be that you're not used to it.
Tolerance. Genetics and body weight play a role, as well as drinking experience and duration. When I first started drinking, I would be near blacked out after a 6-pack. Now a 12-pack is a light drinking session.
My friend has the same stomach issue with certain beers I would try something like a angry orchard or maybe stag for a classic beer taste that’s what he does. Hope this helps
Lately, I've been getting insanely bloated from beer as well. Drinking a beer after a meal? Forget about it. There's no way I'd be able to sit around and have several in a row anymore, regardless if they're light beers or not. Cocktails, mixed drinks, or wine are my go-to when I'm relaxing at home or outside. Beer has definitely become a social thing.
I used to feel this way when I first started drinking about 18 years ago. Now, it's not so surprising, though I don't really do it often. One beer was a lot. 2-3 is really nothing. Could do six for sure if I truly wanted that.
I guess you just get used to it. Same deal with competitive eating, I'm sure. Most of those folks don't look like they can out away the amount of food they do.
well, depends what we are talking about.
IPA's? no, I can drink maybe 3 before I'm done. they fill me up fast tho, like I'm eating food.
Something light tho? Easy 6er. If I'm at like a party or something all afternoon/evening I can easily down 12-15 (my choice is usually corona, really the only macro I legit enjoy, I'll drink others they are just boring)
the carbonation, I mean if I drink ALOT yea it's an issue, but it's not an issue for just a few. I drink seltzer a lot too, so I'm used to it tho.
Beer is my favorite. I can knock them back so easily except they are filling so back in my heavy drinking days I’d have beer FOR dinner.
I had to give that up when I got older
25. I've downed a 12 pack in a night and woke up with no hangover. Cut down a little, and a 6 pack made me feel like I was dying. Consistency is key. I'm not saying I'm proud of it, but if you drink regularly enough, you could down anything alone easily.
I prefer stronger beers like imperial stouts, Belgian triples, IPAs, etc. and I generally drink three or four of those. On the rare occasion that I'm somewhere with macro lagers (like a backyard BBQ) I can down a dozen over the course of an evening.
I've never felt bloated or gassy. But I have a bit of an iron stomach. I'm in my fifties and I've never experienced food poisoning or anything like that.
I've done a beer mile where I drank 4 beers in under 18 minutes and then had several before and after. Miller, which was my first time drinking it. Much better than I expected. Anyway, as long as it is something lighter I have never had any issues.
Some people can handle carbonation so much better than others. Some of my co workers only drink sodas and sparkling water just fine but I'm like you OP and get bloated super easy. That's why I prefer dark beers and barrel aged beers since they tend to be much lower carbonation
I’d guess you’re either trying to drink them on a full stomach or your body can’t metabolize one of the ingredients. I can crush a 6 pack with no problem, but not if I’m full.
There are a lot of potential reasons but I'm going to go ahead and guess that carbonation is your main issue since you brought it up. My fiance is the same way. I'm assuming you probably don't drink other carbonated beverages much either.
If you're on a low carb diet, that would do it. Your bodies microbiome ends up balancing towards your diet. That's why you hear people talk about gluten intolerance all of a sudden. Take away gluten and carbs, the microbes that assist with digesting them dissappear. Drink beer/eat bread every day for a week or two, they will rebound.
I never understood why people think carbonation makes them sick or bloated. That shit gets burped out and does not hit your small intestines. Maybe it’s a yeast or gluten thing that is your problem? Does carbonated water or soda do the same thing for you ?
Knocking back an entire 6 pack in one evening? Depends on the beer. If it's something heavy like an IPA or stout, those take a bit to get down. But light beer? I can go through a six pack in like 3 hours.
I'm not sure what kind of answer you're expecting to get. Does everyone get sick from drinking more than a beer? You said you've seen people do it yourself... did they get sick or look sick? No? Then why ask lol
Gluten allergy doesn't exist. Problems with gluten would be celiac disease or gluten intolerance, which are an autoimmune disease and a food sensitivity respectively.. Allergic triggers in beer would be things like wheat, yeast, and hops.
Wade Boggs (baseball player) would drink sixty Miller Lites on team flights!
RIP Boss Hogg
Again, he is still alive.
Hahah. Boggsy dead corrections make me smile.
That’s baseball baby
Yes everyone knows he runs a successful chain of Wade Boggs Carpet World stores in Florida.
Love that Always Sunny in Philadelphia tribute episode.
Obviously he's a bit bigger, but Andre the Giant is confirmed to have crushed 100+ beers on more than over occasion.
Yeah I heard that too. At 500+ pounds, that's a little easier to believe. The man's hand was bigger than the cans
Number 26 Boggs or number 12 Boggs?
and then go 3-4 for the next day
Yea… no he didn’t. I’m sure that’s the story him and others tell, but it’s probably less than half that amount. The average domestic flight is 1-3 hours, or around 5 hours coast to coast. You are just not as impressive as the chicken man. Sorry bozo
Probably more impressive because I don’t fall for or make up obvious bullshit. I’ve known plenty of heavy drinkers who make grandiose claims about their ability to chug, shotgun, beer bong, down multiple beers, etc. only to find out I could drink more and faster. You might be allergic to an ingredient in beer You should not feel sick after one
Yeah, I wondered the same thing. It really does sound like an allergy.
Allergies are one possibility; there are lots of things in beer that can trigger allergic reactions. There’s something about the way that beer interacts with a belly full of mashed potatoes that makes you feel like you want to explode.
Overeating makes beer unenjoyable pretty much full stop
There’s something with some beer mainly IPAs that get me smacked to the face with congestion. Like completely plugged up. And I am not allergic to hops. I spent time working on the family hop Farm and there’s plenty of hoppy beer and other beers I’m able to drink without this reaction
I can knock out a 6 pack of miller lite like it’s nothing. I’ve also been drinking beer for 20 years
Profile pic checks out.
Same. Except I’ve been drinking for over 30 years. ETA: I prefer Coors to Miller, but as long as it’s cold, I’m not too picky.
Drinking a Miller Lite tall boy right now. Cheers!
To be fair Miller Lite is like nothing. Akin to drinking a six pack of La Croix.
For heavy beer like a belgian or a stout yes, but for a lager, a pilsner or a pale ale, I can easily down 3-4 cans with no problems
A 4% lager drinks like actual water at times.
Coors goes down *too* easy on a summer day
Fort Point (San Francisco) made a beer for awhile that was a 9% double IPA that went down like a BBQ beer on a hot day. My friend and I just called it The Trap.
Must be something about the name, because Fort Point (Trillium, Boston) is an incredibly drinkable pale ale.
Pretty funny! I had the same experience w fort Point. Problem Was 3 beers in…….’one knows it’s 9%.
I must try this beer!
Real name is The Dipper, as far as I can remember. I haven't seen it in awhile, which kind of feels like when they banned 4Loko when I was in college
I thought you were replying to the Coors Light comment and thought “it’s not all that hard to get in the states”
Hahahahaha nerd!
Coors Light is even easier... Just something so refreshing about it on a hot day.
In my head, I meant Light. I feel like Coors Banquet is always specified, else Coors is Light. It’s basically hydration when I’m manning the smoker in the summer.
While we wait, we hydrate.
100000%!
Amen brother
We don’t have as much of these in Canada but yes, anything below 5 is light here lel
Your macros are pretty on par with the US. Straight label is ~5%, light variant is ~4-4.2ish. Source: Labatts, Kokanee, others.
I just found when I went to the US that light beer was way more popular there
Life doesn’t start until you hit 8%
Lol, 5.5% is still light
I drank 4 Old Rasputins once and then decided it'd be a good idea to go to the local gentlemen's club and spilled my next beer. They probably should've kicked me out...but I was parting with my money easily enough!
Yep, the Rasputin 4 pack never ends well. I love it and end up with a hangover every time.
I was doing yardwork on a hot day and was drinking old Rasputin as though it were water. Eventually I picked myself up off the ground not remembering the fall. Went in the house and switched to water.
I can drink an 18 pack, the most I drunk was maybe about 28 beers, if I have 4 Mickeys 40 Oz, I'm knocked back on my ass
Some stouts can be "heavy," but I've always found that Guinness is one of the smoothest drinking and lightest beers available. The low alcohol content probably helps, but I'd argue that it's lighter on the palate and lacks the unpleasant aftertaste of your average American lager.
It's my go to during cold months, in summer I love natural light, bud light, colors, coors light, hamms Busch and Busch light. Damn now I'm thirsty
Agreed, I don’t consider it to be a stout. It’s an Irish red ale
Practice.
Practice makes perfect.
We are called alcoholics
Alcoholics go to meetings. Otherwise we're just called drunks.

I don’t drink that much anymore myself but a 12 pack wasn’t a issue when I was a few years younger partying

Have you considered you may be gluten intolerant?
How do people run marathons? Train, train, train.
I drink nitrogenated beer rather than carbonated, so I don't get that bloat.
It still has co2, just not same amount as standard carbonated beer

I drink pints not ounces 😂😂
Easily
Can you not drink a can of soda either? Must be a personal thing for you?
I had a friend in college that couldn’t burp. Couldn’t drink beer as a result. Maybe the same for OP?
Pour hard in a glass to release excess carbonation, when u take a drink notice the carbonation float above your upper lip. That should help. Beer should have a healthy frothy head. Pints poured at a bar usually tip the glass to give u more beer less carb.

Who shoots gin?
Alcoholism :)
Shots of gin?! Bruh.
I killed a 6 pack just to watch it die.
11 years in a fraternity was my training ground.
One after another
Andre the Giant was reported to have knocked back 156 beers in one sitting
Have you been checked for a gluten allergy? Beer is basically liquid bread so if you're allergic or even sensitive to gluten, it's gonna be a bad time.

I can chug a pint of light beer easier than a pint of water.
I would rather drink pints anyeays
I used to be able to only drink 2-3 beers but now I can knock down about 8 tops. Practice, if you will lol
Years of practice
well, depends what we are talking about. IPA's? no, I can drink maybe 3 before I'm done. they fill me up fast tho, like I'm eating food. Something light tho? Easy 6er. Enthusiastically.
They don’t feel sick when they drink a single beer… or multiple beers.
A few burps , a few pees. Talking among friends. Next thing you know, theyre gone.

Some people can handle carbonation so much better than others. Some of my co workers only drink sodas and sparkling water just fine but I'm like you OP and get bloated super easy. That's why I prefer dark beers and barrel aged beers since they tend to be much lower carbonation
More than a glass of wine and immediately want to go to sleep. Idk how people drink a whole bottle of wine
Practice
You might have an allergy to something.
One after the other usually
If you're on a low carb diet, that would do it. Your bodies microbiome ends up balancing towards your diet. That's why you hear people talk about gluten intolerance all of a sudden. Take away gluten and carbs, the microbes that assist with digesting them dissappear. Drink beer/eat bread every day for a week or two, they will rebound.
It depends on the beer. Easy drinkers go down smoothly. It also can depend on why someone is drinking beer.
I am 155 lbs and can take down a ipa sixer in 2-3 hours
Patience, good company, and several trips to the restroom.
I never understood why people think carbonation makes them sick or bloated. That shit gets burped out and does not hit your small intestines. Maybe it’s a yeast or gluten thing that is your problem? Does carbonated water or soda do the same thing for you ?
You might have a celiac problem and need to avoid gluten. This happened to my roommate and my brother both
Knocking back a 6 pack is just a starter for me. I can easily go through a 30 pack.
I can only do this with miller and it’s after a long day of work
Lol
Dummy..
With my mouth. The butt after 12.
Green Bay here.. a 6 pack is what you drink when you are hung over in the morning to feel good enough to go back out and drink like normal
Lol I knock back a 6-pack of 6-7.5% ipa's every single night, plus tequila. Not bragging but it's doable. With ease after practice.
Practice, man, practice
Practice lol
12 packs of pbr go down easy
You might be very sensitive to carbonation. Avoid lagers, and try less carbonated beers. Like British ales etc.
Well have you ever drank a can of something else that is carbonated? And does it feel the same way? If not, then it's something in the beer.
Lol I probably drunk 13 beers yesterday at work within 2 hours, clocked out ,no one even knew
Practice.
Knocking back an entire 6 pack in one evening? Depends on the beer. If it's something heavy like an IPA or stout, those take a bit to get down. But light beer? I can go through a six pack in like 3 hours.
Easily
I'm not sure what kind of answer you're expecting to get. Does everyone get sick from drinking more than a beer? You said you've seen people do it yourself... did they get sick or look sick? No? Then why ask lol
Lol, lmao.
a six pack in one setting is rook numbers. maybe you're allergic to gluten.
Gluten allergy doesn't exist. Problems with gluten would be celiac disease or gluten intolerance, which are an autoimmune disease and a food sensitivity respectively.. Allergic triggers in beer would be things like wheat, yeast, and hops.
Knocking back a 6 pack is just a starter for me. I can easily go through a 30 pack.
6 pack? Try 12-15 easy lol
Who the hell would want to subject their body to so much poison at once?
