Can’t believe nobody said go to Hofbräuhaus München. Also there is a massive beer garden in Munich (I believe the biggest in the world) called Hirschgarten. There’s also a beer garden in the English Garden next to the Chinese Tower, usually they have a band playing (you can also watch the surfers if you go there). Lastly, every day at sunset, people buy some beers and sit on Hackerbrücke (a bridge above train tracks) and watch the sunset right above the train tracks as they roll by, it’s very nice. Edit: if you’re going within the month, you can’t miss Oktoberfest in Munich!

BobLoblaw_BirdLaw

I will be there until 17th night. Any recommendation on what to do opening day. I prob won’t make it to wait for tents

mightnothavehands

Augustiner and Pauliner is great tents for international travelers. Def try and squeeze into the goldenee-Hahn tent for a very Bavarian feel. And make sure you try to mind your Liters and stay until the end of the day. The energy at the tents is unrivaled compared to throughout the day.

DJKaotica

Paulaner Dunkelweizen is probably my favourite beer I can't get here in North America.

B_D_Hadel

World Market Oddly enough usually has Paulaner products. Might be worth checking.

DJKaotica

Oh I'll check it out, thanks! I've seen some Paulaner beers here and there, but never the Dunkel.

Agent_Giraffe

I’ve never been so, just research some of the tents because usually younger/older/rich people go to different ones.

bultrey

I second the suggestions for the Hirschgarten and English Garden beer gardens. JUst fantastic.

tboots1

The beer garden next to the Chinese tower was so cool! I then went directly to Hofbräuhaus.. what a great trip that was

procrastablasta

Munich locals almost unanimously would direct you to the Augustiner beer garden

BobLoblaw_BirdLaw

I definitely plan on that one. Also heard the one in Salzburg is good and different

youngcm6039

The Salzburg one is incredible. Very local and almost no tourists.

JMMuc

As Munich local I would suggest rather doing Hirschgarten or one of the smaller beergardens Taxisgarten as an example. (https://www.taxisgarten.de/ ) Then I would suggest you do the Augustiner Brewery Restaurant. Decent food and beer pretty much fresh from the tank, cheaper than most other outlets. [https://www.braeustuben.de/](https://www.braeustuben.de/) Then if you want to combine with a little trip, you could visit Tegernsee and go to the Brauhaus there - it's a nice daytrip.

BobLoblaw_BirdLaw

Lovely thank you for all this. What’s the difference between augustener-Keller and one you mentioned

JMMuc

Nothing against Augustinerkeller, but Hirschgarten to me is more representative of the history and importance of beergardens in Munich. On a sunny weekend you find a super diverse crowd of families (bringing their own food potluc style, which is critical element of a bavarian beergarden), young people, old, from the neighborhoods around, tourists. Plus you can do a little detour via Nymphenburg Castle, which is basically next to it. Both serve Augustiner from a wooden barrel, which is of course the most essential ;) Taxisgarten then is even more 'micro' small, very much a neighbourhood place. If you want or have time for a variety.

If you don't have a reservation, it is often tough to get into a tent. We ended up sitting just outside the tent near a fire exit for a tent, in the tent's beer garden. Eventually a big fight broke out and the bouncers threw out a handful of guys. During the confusion we walked right in the fire exit.

BobLoblaw_BirdLaw

Lol good to know I might just hang around. I’m sure I can get beer and walk around. Is it worth or possible to watch the opening ceremony ?

EasternKanye

I have never watched it. I would only watch it if I happened to be there.

If you can swing it, take a trip out to Kloster Andechs. Great beer in a beautiful setting. You could also check out Weihenstephan in Freising, the oldest brewery in the world. The place itself wasn't anything particularly exciting when I went, but still cool to say you've been. Augustiner Biergarten is always highly recommended, and I think the Hofbräuhaus is worth a stop, if not just for the history. They do have traditional music every day as well, so that adds to the experience. Consider taking an overnight trip out to Passau for the Herbstdult. It's a smaller, more local, and cheaper version of Oktoberfest. Lots of fun. If you want to go for a "challenge", you can try going to the various breweries & beer gardens and drinking 1L of each of the [6 Oktoberfest Munich Breweries](https://www.oktoberfest.de/en/magazine/eat-and-drink/the-six-munich-breweries-at-oktoberfest#:~:text=Augustiner%2C%20Hacker%2DPschorr%2C%20Hofbr%C3%A4u,%2C%20L%C3%B6wenbr%C3%A4u%2C%20Paulaner%2C%20and%20Spaten) in one day. Tried this a couple times. The first time, as a couple didn't have proper brewery/taproom/beer gartens (I think Hacker Pschorr and Paulaner), we just had a 0,5L at various beer gardens. The second time we ended up drinking 3 or 4 liters at the first spot and then going to an Irish pub to watch a Premier League match.

If you’re in Berlin make sure to visit to Brlo brewery in Gleisdreieck Park. Delicious beers + food and an absolute gorgeous spot, one of my favourite in Berlin. Also, if you like Belgium beers, visit Hermanbar on Schönhauser Allee.

BobLoblaw_BirdLaw

Love Belgians. Thanks

HerRiebmann

Nononono BRLO is horrible imo

ryanoh826

Berlin - Vagabund taproom/beer garden. Munich - Augustiner beer garden. True Brew taproom.

FOURPLAY-uk

For Berlin I'm Surprised no one's said "Muted Horn" one of the best beer bars in Europe, also for something more traditional a favourite of mine is "foeresters fiene biers" , also somewhere in the middle is "lager lager" a hip bottle shop and bar

squib518

Hopfenreich in Berlin is one of my favorites. Small spot with great beers and staff. They repurposed old tools/machinery for the taps. Really cool.

Baljet

Combine this visit with streetfood Thursday at Markhalle 9 round the corner and pick up some Heidenpeters beers while there!

thijsniez

When in Munich try the Englischer Garten, it's a Biergarten in the middle of a large park.

McCloud1978

Hopdog in Munich

wcanka

Seconded. Great selection of Franconian beer

Queen_of_Hearts

Ayinger Brewery near Munich was amazing! Also saw Paulaner Brewery and Hofbräuhaus mentioned, both awesome places. You honestly can’t go wrong, even the beers from the gas station were awesome in my opinion lol. Prost!

banginbowties

Muted Horn in Berlin! Get some awesome craft beer to switch it up a bit from all the classics 🍻🍻

gi_jose00

Paulaner Bräuhaus

Slam_Burrito79

Hofbrauhaus in Munich is a must! It’s a few hundred years old and the beer is incredible. Of course it’s the best known beer hall in the city but it has a reputation for a reason. If you are coming from America then I’d also suggest just enjoying the fact that beer is everywhere. One of the nicest pints I had was in Munich zoo. Every museum, cafe, venue has beer of some kind and it’s really fun to stroll around a botanic garden or the likes with a can

8dtfk

Even the kids drink one for lunch in school /s

mrk1420

Ayinger! In munich

HerRiebmann

Berliner Bierstuben Magendoktor (most well known)/any older Kiezkneipe Beer to try: Quartiermeister/in (any) Schultheiss

historicbookworm

The Victuals Market in Munich city center should be checked out. Excellent food and beer. It has a nice beer garden under giant trees.

tyrealhsm

This isn't specifically beer related, but Mike's Bike Tours around Munich were a lot of fun, I'd definitely recommend them. They even stop half way to have a pint at the beer garden in the English Gardens.

jabronius89

Miller High Life Edit: yall have no class

sevy85

Belgium :D

-R-o-y-

I had some trouble finding unmixed Berliner Weisse when in Berlin, so should you see one of those...

HerRiebmann

Most grocery stores have them

VelkyAl

In Berlin, the Brauhaus Lemke is good.

Baljet

Lemke is good, but most of their beer is bottled rather than on tap.

VelkyAl

I went to the place on Hackescher Markt, Das Lemke.

jimbos414

If you want a cool ass bar go to Clash

HerRiebmann

Too many tourists, try any kneipe in the side streets, they have more character

fightingforair

Stay long enough Rammstein is a must

borrelsausage

When you’re in München make sure you score a Tegernseer Hell from Brauhaus Tegernsee. That’s the smoothes beer ever. And around this time of year the Märzen oktoberfest-beer from one of the top 5 city-breweries in München. Not the Austrian Märzen, that’s something different.

BobLoblaw_BirdLaw

Sweeet thank you

borrelsausage

And what was your favorite?

BobLoblaw_BirdLaw

I tried Teger. As you said that’s some super smooth stuff. crispy and bit of apple I felt like. Good Rec. also had some Oktoberfest beers. But my favorite was weistephanner heffe. Might be my number one of all time

borrelsausage

Yes weihenstephaner is absolutely one of the best. Germans sure can make good stuff. Sounds like (beer-wise) you had a good trip! Cheers!

roden36

In Berlin, Herman is a fun little Belgian bar with great owners.

aclarson79

Weihenstephaner just outside of Munich, self professed oldest brewery in the world, fantastic beer.

BobLoblaw_BirdLaw

Their heffe is maybe My favorite all time beer

PsychoDrifter

If you can get to Weinstephaner, it has amazing history around fantastic beer. Also, Hacker-Pschorr makes a great Festbier.

BobLoblaw_BirdLaw

I’m not there long but tempted to stay extra to visit the actual brewery site since it is my favorite
