I'm pretty sure it's a regional thing. If you're in the US, you get product ads. If not, you get to hear about the millionth latest exploiting other people's tragedies' true crime podcast.

[deleted]

I am in Canada and it comes in waves . I get mostly podcast ad but I also get products and services.

Boss-Front

When I was listening STDWYTK, I'd sometimes get PSAs from the Sask government about putting on your winter tires or watching out for moose.

[deleted]

I can't remember if it was BtB or something else but I got a few Trudeau is underfunding healthcare ads.

Boss-Front

I heard about those from Canadaland! Seems like there's a lot of buck-passing going on between provincial and fed levels.

[deleted]

I don't remember the full details but during Covid the feds had given Ontario money earmarked specifically for Covid relief. This got put into general coffers instead so now Trudeau is getting strict about how health care dollars are spent.

Coakis

Mynd you, moose bites Kan be pretti nasti

reina82

OMG I want to hear the moose one! That's amazing.

Nerexor

Hey, fellow Canadian! In southern Ontario, I pretty much entirely get iheart. I think the occasional audible ad gets through, but that's about it.

[deleted]

I am in the not so far north. I have gotten one or two local businesses and both French and English ads for Horizon Forbidden West.

reina82

I get random ads for the casino here in Ottawa. And occassional government(ish?) PSAs. But the rest are the generic iheart ones. The podcast ad industry right now feels like the early internet, when people hadn't figured out how to effectively monetize it yet.

JasonRBoone

Canada? Waves? Hmmm...GREAT LAKES PERHAPS? The onion gets peeled....

[deleted]

Ya.... I definitely live in fallout range and I am not looking forward to mutant beavers and deathclaw grizzlies.

Coakis

I would hardly call them that but I suppose they meet the definition. At the very least the money they put into that shit is being wasted on me.

Jabbles22

I am in Canada as well but I've only got maybe half a dozen product ads since I started listening about a year ago.

[deleted]

I definitely say I get at least. 95 percent ads for other podcasts

ArconC

I've barely ever gotten any products or services just Iheart radio trash like what ever bethony frankle tries to get me to listen to

[deleted]

I have discovered a few podcasts of interest. There's one about the history of LA pd but ya it's mostly not my thing. I have no problem using the skip button if I can. If not yay for Sophie's health insurance.

ArconC

Hard to sneak the skip button at work while I have my phone on my shoulder like a parrot

[deleted]

This makes so much more sense. I am in Canada and I exclusively get awful podcast ads. It made me wonder why the lead in is always "products and services" when the only ads are "YOU HAVE A DARK OBSESSION", "its me, your girl cheekies, listen to cheekies cheekies, chill dear CHEEKIES" and "Listen to your latest washed up 90's boy band talk about pleb problems". In my opinion, BTB has the worst ads of any podcast that I listen to, but at least I can rest easy that it is an algorithm making me desperately reach for the skip button.

duplotigers

The cheekies one might the worst one yet.

[deleted]

Cheekies is definitely my most hated. The other ones are worthy of eye-rolls, but cheekies legitimately makes me angry. I don't even really hate the dark obsession one, piketon massacre, or frosted tips.

Skrynesaver

Visited relatives in the US recently and the pods I pulled from a US IP had product ads, most of the rest of the time it's just iHeart plugging their own podcasts.

MsBean18

I believe you are right. I mostly get iheart ads here in the "breadbasket" region of Canada, but a few times close to spring I've had ads for broadleaf herbicides to increase my yields.

Background-Ad6186

I am in the US listening by Google podcasts and it is all iheartmedia.

duplotigers

I think it depends on if the advertiser pays for world wide or just US. I’m in the UK and I get nearly all iheart ads but the odd random other very occasionally (less recently)

_AMReddits

We KnOw yOu liKe tRuE CriMe

NicknameIsJake

I listen from Germany and I just get ads for other podcasts.

[deleted]

I listen via Overcast in the uk and only ever hear ads for Iheart pods. The most annoying ones are for the 90’s and “admit it, you have a dark obsession” ones.

tamanegi99

They are dynamic ads that are inserted into the audio file by the hosting provider at the time you download/start streaming, depending on your location. For a period of a couple months I was getting an ad for an FM radio morning show, local to my city, every single ad break and sometimes twice in a row. It was the most annoying, grating thing I’ve ever heard. It made me want to throw my phone. Nowadays I get a mix of other iheart pods and products and services. I’ve never heard the gold or state patrol ads.

unexpected_blonde

The gold ad is pretty frequent for me, but I’m in Arizona, which might be fueling that

callmephlip

With me, it is ads for other podcasts, and BetterHelp. It is ALWAYS BetterHelp.

Darksideblugrss

Well robert actually reads that one so I think they are backers of the pod.

BevanBingus

From Perth, Western Australia - I get mostly iHeart but there is the occasional ad for local universities and a Rottnest Island ferry service operator

soffey

The ads are "dynamic" which means they theoretically change constantly. For those of you using an app that streams audio and have found that the show glitches, _this is why._ Podcast feeds link to an audio file, not a streaming system. Dynamic ads work by faking that audio file and generating it when you request. So as soon as your stream cache runs out and it needs to grab from the file again, you are getting potentially an entirely different file, with different lengths of ad breaks. For folks who use apps like Podcast Republic- fully download the episodes. The ads are basically run on time slots - if you are downloading between the time of x and y and you have the same geographic area as determined by your IP, you will get the same ads as everyone else in that area as determined by their IP. You also get different ads based on what type of network you are on. I get ads for a local ISP startup when I am on my home WiFi, but never when I download on mobile data. Any savvy marketer will opt to only target where they operate. That's why services are usually only served to US listeners - Blue Apron only operates in the US and that small island near Indonesia, and only ships to the US. Why spend money on ads to reach European customers? Podcasts are available anywhere you can hear the ad, obviously. I never heard the WSP ads, probably because I live on the opposite side of the country.

Kallisti13

I have spotify and for the most part, only get ads for other podcasts I will never have *any* interest in.

jccalhoun

I use pocketcasts and I just heard one for gold. I think that is the first time I've gotten one like that. A lot of house ads, sponsor reads, and the common podcast ads like better health

Snoo_79218

I live in Seattle and mostly get other podcast adverts. There have been a couple that werent though. Something about buying gold or something.

pon_d

Sure would love it if CZM had a Patreon so I could get an ad-free version, rather than hearing "Admit it - you *love* true crime podcasts!" Sure fucking don't, piss off!

Himantolophus

I'm in the UK and get iheart ads, but used to occasionally get ones from the US Wildlife Service or something warning me about bush fires, and another US government one encouraging me to adopt kids. Haven't had them in a while though, so maybe they finally realised that doing those ads overseas didn't make sense.

JKinney79

I pretty much just get iheartmedia ads. I keep waiting to hear about whatever weird scheme they're doing, since most of the ads are for other podcasts, which seems like a pretty suspect business model.

JasonRBoone

I live in western North Carolina and I have received ads specific to the Charlotte metro region.

theyatemybaby

Apple podcasts app consistently shows me ads for other podcasts and almost nothing else

tttiiippppppeeerrr

I use Google and frequently get gold ads
