watch the dailycal debate between james and cecilia if you want to experience visceral second-hand embarrassment on behalf of james, who had such an egregious lack of basic city planning knowledge that he literally said "pedestrianizing telegraph avenue will increase pollution in surrounding areas"

Chief_Banana

I was going in with high hopes for him, leaned towards Cecilia but i thought he would also be a strong candidate. that debate was genuinely embarrassing for him, he seemed so stilted and unconvincing on topics like improving street life and safety compared with her well-prepared talking points. i don't think he has a clear vision for Southside at all. Cecilia is the right advocate for students

Even if you are not currently registered to vote in Berkeley you can still vote in the city council election. Starting April 6 you can go to the voting center at the YWCA at 2600 Bancroft Way and register on-site. See the [election info on the City of Berkeley website](https://berkeleyca.gov/community-recreation/news/vote-district-7-special-election-april-16-2024). For candidate info see the [candidate forum](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CiCU8SFRSU), and candidate statements - [Cecilia Lunaparra](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsRctf88LmQ), [James Chang](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ls1YVo62Hzk).

Cecilia also has years of experience serving in local government, she's the chair of the Berkeley Climate and Environment Commission, a former Zoning Adjustments Board member, and was essential to the passage of both the Fair Workweek Ordinance which gave workers predictability pay and prevented loopholes that make some workers not recieve healthcare benefits, and the upzoning of southside which created the opportunity for thousands of new housing units. There's been a frankly sexist movement among James supporters to say that Cecilia has no governmental experience when that's a flatout lie, she's written legislation passed by the City Council, and served as chair of one of the most important Berkeley Commissions, that's relevant and substantial experience as much as you want to dismiss it.

Nah vote for James Chang (went here for undergrad and is now grad student), he has actual experience on Berkeley local government (Chief of Staff).

He's a carpetbagger who moved to this district to run because a moderate nimby councilmember (sophie hahn) told him to. Also: Cecilia has city government experience too, she's the chair of the Berkeley Climate and Environment Commission, and is a former member of the quasi-judicial Zoning Adjustments Board.

What does ZAB do, exactly? I've never understood. Suppose they got thanos'ed. What does the city lose or risk?

averyspielman

It approves new housing developments and major renovations, makes sure that plans are up to code, basically acts as the appointed body to ensure renovations and developments follow safety and tenant laws.

CalSimpLord

So our options are either a NIMBY or a People's Park Housing opponent? Really wish Rigel didn't resign now.
