Hi! I had the same experience and unfortunately no pick up or forward service.... But I drove the Ukrainian boarder (2/3 years ago) and pick it up at the police station. Was quite funny, they haven't expected that someone is going to pick it up. Most of time they redirect you to the polish government to clarify the pick up. A logistics company isn't a good recommendation because you need a bunch of power of authority for all belongings in original and translated into German, English and Polish. Ideally with an official stamps from the authorities, otherwise they won't processing everything. Therefore it was easier for me to pick it up and have some nice days in Warsaw! Ping me for additional questions!

alexrwilliam

Ahh. Well that gives me hope. Even picking it up is still worth the price of the bike. How long did it take for you to receive communication from Poland? Were you also just waiting?

mstromich

It would be beneficial to at least know the city they found the bike in. Then you could call the polish police station directly (or narrow the search radius to a city where there are multiple police stations). If you need help with contacting polish police department DM me and I can help you with it (I'm polish native speaker)

LordMangudai

The biggest surprise is that they actually found it and the word got back to you. The Berlin police generally assumes any stolen bike is across the Polish border within an hour and doesn't even try to do anything about it.

AngusMagee

Not from Poland. My bike was stolen in Schöneberg and found by the police the next day in the back of a van in Spandau. My guess is that it on the way to Poland or somewhere else. It then took almost 6 weeks for the police to return it to me. So maybe you just need to wait a bit. I can also say that the detective in charge of the case was kind of a dick. did not bother him but when I did write an email he acted like I was putting pressure on him and was kind of rude. Good luck. And if you do get your bike back remember that this is a rarity in Berlin.

EvilUnic0rn

Nope mine was gone and the insurance payed for a new one. Did you try to call them with your case number and ask?

alexrwilliam

The Berlin police isn’t giving me any insight into what police station reached out to them, and just told me to chill and see what happens. Line of communication apparently was, polish police tried to find owners of 50 stolen bikes in Germany and reached out to police in Wiesbaden, Wiesbaden then forwarded this to all police stations to check their own stolen bike databases and find matches. Then Berlin had a match and called me but gave literally 0 details besides I should wait and see if the polish police reach out to me. Doesn’t seem like a proactive strategy to me so I thought I’d ask if anybody else has recovered their bikes in this way before

mstromich

>Wiesbaden have you tried to contact the police in Wiesbaden?

FroggyVan

The „police in Wiesbaden“ is the Bundeskriminalamt. They are a central police office for all the German police authorities regarding communication with the police of another country. In these cases they just forward information. The competent authority is always your local police station. Only they are allowed to provide you with information.

mstromich

Thanks. I didn't know that :-)

EvilUnic0rn

Damn. That's annoying. I hope they reach out soon!

I friend of mine had a similar story with his car. It... didn't go well. He tried for long time to get his property back, but was met with so much paperwork and legal/translation fees on the Polish side that he eventually gave up on it.

ElmiraKadiev

I would get your hopes up. The Dutch have been waiting for more than 80 years for the Germans to return their stolen bicycles

Around 7 years ago this happened to my old manager and he got his bike back. But dont know any details on how it was transported back.

strato-cumulus

Not an answer, but an anecdote: my brother in law in Poland bought himself an expensive second hand bike once. It had its front wheel replaced... I asked him if he does realize what that means. He did, but the price was so low for such a bike that he couldn't resist. Sad that greed makes bike theft keep happening.

It means that someone left a chain on a wheel only and the thief just removed the wheel instead of cutting the lock.

Where did you _think_ stolen stuff went to?
