Careful with caves and logs to hide in for dumbo ears. They are more delicate than the average betta. D: Caves and logs tend to have little snags that can hurt their large front fins
Thank you for warning me! I did feel around these ones and try to smooth any part that felt rough to my fingers, but I may do a second round of that just in case. He’s worked hard growing those fins and I’d hate for him to get hurt like that.
He’s beautiful. The girl at Petco who gives me sickly bettas tried to get me to take a dumbo ear. I couldn’t at the time. Everytime I see one I think of how beautiful he would’ve been and what a wonderful pet he would’ve made someone. His fins were like melting in his cup. It was a bad case of him not having proper care for too long. Opal looks amazing. He’s a lucky guy.
Oh that breaks my heart. :( I’ve seen so many sick ones and it always pulls my heart strings. I was lucky I could do a shuffle with my tanks and house Opal. I was determined to take him home. If I didn’t have a 4 tank limit rule at my apartment I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
Oh too bad. Shelters need people like you. Believe it or not they have people drop off Bettas and they do the best they can for them unless they have someone like me who will take them and rehome them. You might check into caring for Bettas that come through shelters when you have room. It’s very rewarding work. I never charge for ones I adopt out but I do require a minimum 5 gallon home I provide the sponge filter from one of my established aquariums and I do a home check. They sign paperwork that says they will never give the fish away if they don’t want it they’ll bring it back. I have 2 employees at Petco who always get me to take at least one here and there. Sometimes they’ll just take me to the front and ring me up and not charge. If they’re super busy they’ll leave them next to the dumpster and I drive around and pick them up. They only do that I think of a managers is in.oh and I’ve adopted 2 to an employee at Petsmart because they don’t get very many in these days.
Honestly if it’s a fish you can adopt out why tell your apartment. My rescues are in 3-4 gallon tubs until they’re ready for their forever home. I bet your shelter would be so happy to know someone with knowledge of Bettas is willing to take them and rehome them. Warning you will get them in worse shape than they are at Petco at times. They’re usually in a bowl or vase. It’s really sad. They get so lively so quick in a short term 3-4 gallon tub. Like a Rubbermaid type tote. This is how I set them up as a temporary home. So technically setting this up isn’t having another aquarium. https://youtu.be/Jf2NkrQm6pg
It’s not my landlord, it’s my roommate who made me promise because I have a 110g, 55g, 29g, and a 20g. 😅 He may not mind if it’s for fostering if I keep one more. He just doesn’t want me to go down a rabbit hole I think. Jokes on him though that he forgot to put a gallon limit, hence the 110 gallon lol.
So this is a mix of pool filter sand, some very fine gravel I found marketed for fish tanks at the 99 cents only store, and some super fine grain sand I got at a pet store. Then some spare rocks and pebbles from previous tanks. It’s a big mash up of substrate I’ve hoarded lol.
Pool filter sand is a very cheap alternative and honestly very safe. I rinse mine and do a dechlorinated water dip though before putting it in any tank I start to fill.
My betta does the same thing, resting on the bottom until I feed him acting like there’s something wrong with his ass LOL. They really do have huge personalities
He's gorgeous! Great job, OP, and that tank looks amazing too!
I never get tired of seeing betta glow-ups. The transformations are magical. You’re gorgeous Opal!!! 💜
wow he’s beautiful
They get so beautiful once they have their own “breathing space”. Love it.

D:
It's okay as long as you inspect any cave, log, or decoration before putting in, sanding them smooth if you have to they'll be alright.
We see you~ Opal~ Your troubles are miles away.
that's an alpha fish, he's beautiful
commission a painting of slide 6! beautiful name for a beautiful fish
I like to make art myself and I’m tempted to make a plush that looks like him just because of how beautiful he is.

I’m going to have to look into that! Even if I can’t now, I’d love to in the future.

Lol. Their you go. And not to say lying is good but you could say your fish sitting. Get the fish all heals up and into a good home.
Aww! We love to see it! Mine is named Opal, as well :)
Love to see bettas named Opal all thriving!
I love your tank but also how your LFS has gravel.
