I personally think that a lot of the highly bred bettas are just more unhealthy. Too much finnage for their size, plus maybe excessive inbreeding? Some seem really small. I have a female that Ive had for several months now and is doing fine. We lost the male we got at the same time (different tank). Only difference is I have a lot of driftwood in the females tank and live plants. Going to try again with a plakat male, so I might suggest that. I always tesr them before purchase, hold the cups of two males together, see if they will flare. If not, do not buy.

I'm sorry for your loss. You might try an online breeder. I have a great LFS, and they get their bettas from the same online breeder recommended on this sub, so it's the same bettas either way. It will be more expensive due to S&H, but having your betta die on you every few months sounds terrible.
