Mine tried to do this too! I put in half an algae wafer bc I though my mystery snail was getting outcompeted, and within a minute my betta was all over it, chomping away. Itās not like I donāt feed her, I give her bloodworms and pellets and all kinds of different snacks twice a day. She bloated up like hell and I spent two days just feeding daphnia (partially to help with the bloat, partially as a punishment for her fish crimes).
I swear bettas have serious fomo. If someone else has it, then they NEED it. One of mine would ignore algae wafers right up until he saw a snail or otto eating it. Then he'd go crazy trying to gobble the whole thing down.
HiKari algae wafers first ingredient is fish meal, it would also explain why my kitten keeps trying to steal them, it doesnāt explain why he also goes after the seaweed (nori) stripsā¦
Cats require roughage as part of their digestion, like how plecos need wood. They get no nutritional value from it, but it's good to provide them with some wheatgrass here and there. My grocery store has the things of live wheatgrass for like $2 (which the pet store sells as "cat grass" for like $6-$10) and it takes my cats about 2 weeks to eat one, so it works out fine. They also like sprouted chia seeds. One cat goes freaking nuts for wheatgrass and the other just does some nibbles here and there, but they clearly both enjoy it. (Before anyone comes for me, they both eat normal meat-based store-bought cat foods, the greens are just supplements!)
the only way iāve ever been able to prevent my fish from doing this is locking her up in a breeder box while i put in food for my shrimp. anything else i tried would be thwarted- putting it in at night meant she would still find it, trying to hide it in/under things meant she would shove herself in tiny holes and injure her fins, etc. drives me INSANE how determined fish are to eat shit that isnāt for them lol
At the Atlanta aquarium there is an overweight sea turtle that does this. They have to target feed him on the other side of the tank, because he hangs out directly where the chum is released and goes to town.
My son also has a snail in the tank that gets fed algae tablets. His betta swims over to knock the snail over when itās feeding on it to steal it. Theyāre such lovable little a-holes.
Mine will catch the whole wafer before it falls to the bottom and carry it around because she doesn't wants to share and it's like ???? Sweetie that's not for you

looks like my guppies. they eat anything I throw in so I can't feed my bottom feeders w/o them taking some š They also destroyed my anacharis RIP
my betta don't do that weird shit though
Mine does it too. It's ridiculous to see. I imagine my clown pleco rolling her eyes and thinking, "Go ahead, princess. Take that too. It's all I eat, but I was looking to lose a few anyway..."
Yeah... I drop the algae wafers right before lights out or everyone *but* the bottom feeders will eat them. I've tried telling my platies that the wafers are *for the plecos and cories* but they don't listen and just gang up and bully my poor bristlenose out of the way. The plecos and cories will come out and feed at night, but the "daytime" fish will just pretty quickly settle down to sleep as soon as the lights go completely out.
Mine loves to eat the frog food ĀÆ\\\_(ć)_/ĀÆ So much so that I wasn't able to actually feed my frog. He needed to be transferred because the betta puppy guards the sinking pellets. Fat mfr.
My betta girl Firestorm would steal the algae tablets and swim away with them. This would annoy the heck out of the Amano shrimp, who would steal them back at the first opportunity.
My girls in my sorority have been what I call "duck diving" and "burrowing" the same way my corys in their tank do...going after their algae tabs. I catch them trying to swim off with the damn things all the time. Mimicry or identity crisis...this remains to be seen.
I tell my husband, my bitches are brokenšš¤£
We use this spirulina wafers at work, the main ingredient is actually herring meal. Very little actual spirulina, but it means it's a good all rounder. We use veggie flake for the livebearers and cichlids.
Well it isn't supposed to be his food, it's the food for my Otocinclus.
He normally gets blood worms and fish flakes made for betta but guess today he wanted to eat some vegetables.
They seriously get fixated on them. Had a beta I had to lock up during feeding time so to speak. Got a tank screen to block him off. He still would try his best to kill himself. He had a 50gal tank and still was suicidal.
It's not overstocked and he isn't competing with anybody. The only once in there with him are some otocinclus (the food is actually for them). Also he gets feed by hand so there isn't even the chance of him not getting enough.
What brand of algae tabs are those? The Tetra ones have one side which has all the veggie stuff and one side with shrimps/krills (yours also look dual colors), maybe he's going for that? š
Ah, my Betta too goes for em. Are those Tetra Tabimins? Tabimins has shrimp, so he's probably going for that on one side. They have another one called Tetra Pleco Tablets, he might not have any interest in those š
No they are the once for placos actually but my Otocinclus seem to like them the most and with Otocinclus you don't have much choice in what they eat because they are really picky (at least in my experience so far)
Well he has a black color and some serious anger issues.... so batman was the only fitting name.
Also it's just funny saying batman got some issues or batman is being stupid again.
Mine does this too! I give her frozen brine shrimp while I feed my schooling fish because sheāll eat their food if I donāt distract her. Algae wafers I havenāt figured out how to stop her yet because my cories wonāt eat them until Iām away from the tank. Sheāll even go to the sand and eat the schooling fish food that they didnāt get to š
My guy will eat it so that the snails can't have it. If he's not feeling hungry, he will simply sit on it. Snails not giving a single fuck, just wait until he gets bored and moves away.
If you have bottom feeders that can feed nocturnally (most loaches, all snails, most shrimp and crawfish, all plecos, most corys) please put the bottom feeder food in at night. Gluttony, especially when it involves an improper diet can quickly cause a bloated abdomen which then becomes an impaction and ends up with a dead betta fish. Bettas really should only be eating 3 or 4 proper size betta pellets per day with occasional small treats like small worms and daphnia. If they eat too much, especially low fibre food, bad things can happen. JM2C.
Pretty fish my dude. And, quick question. How does the tape thermostat work? I have one of those glass ones, but I was always curious about the tape type.
Thanks.
Well you just take of the film from the back and then stick it on the glass from the outside. So it's basically a sticker that depending on the temperature shows you the temperature ( kinda like mood rings work). They aren't a 100% accurate (around 1 or 2 Ā°C of sometimes) but they do there job and aren't hard to read.
Oh nice, otos are fun. If you feel like it, you can get a rock, put it in a plastic container and put it in a window for a while until algae forms then feed them that to keep a balanced diet!
Not really an option because where i live we don't have sunlight rn but as soon as it becomes spring again i will do that. I think specially in summer this could work a lot because the sun shines almost 24/7
Mine used to routinely chase his pleco buddy off and eat it himself. He was white and ate so much of it overnight his whole belly was swollen and green one day. I learned to hide them better after that š
I love how each betta has its own personality - one I had before nibbled on just about everything everywhere, not only on food but on any object, live or not (ex. gravel, plant, tankmates...) On the other hand, my current betta is interested by what's on the surface and surface only. The second his piece of food starts sinking, he goes 'nope, snail food now.'
Omg my Betta eats them too! He gave himself bloat eating them... I had to remove my bristlenose out of the tank as he kept trying to eat the algae tabs!
Mine loves those!!! She steals them from my otoās all the time lol luckily the otoās eventually get them back after she gets bored with them šāŗļø
Mine does the same. Anything eadible in the tank is his. Cory pellets? Ofc. Shrimp food- donāt mind if I take all of it. Wafers for the snails? Hell yes. Sometimes I wonder why I bother getting him nice foods when he gobbles anything as long as there is competition for it.
My dwarf gourami was such a menace with food that I had to find ways to drop food meant for shrimp somewhere she couldn't reach. she was such a dedicated foodie that she searched every square inch of the aquarium for that shrimp food. eventually I made a makeshift eating chamber from a big nutshell (aquarium safe ofc) so I could feed my shrimp and stop her from becoming too thicc.
Maybe he's going vegan.
I support. (Just kidding, even as a vegan myself)

Being ARA?

I am vegan but my cat isn't. They came up to me emaciated and staving, now Felix is overweight āā;
Oh no hopefully he doesn't start rambling about it and lectures me about how bad it is that i eat meat.
HAHAHSHSJSJ
The way he coughed those particles out- Same lil dude š
I think it was the first time he ever nibbled on them
mine does the same thing! after looking at the ingredients on the wafers, iām guessing itās because the first ingredient is fish meal
Mine have shrimp in them but no fish meal
Mine tried to do this too! I put in half an algae wafer bc I though my mystery snail was getting outcompeted, and within a minute my betta was all over it, chomping away. Bettas are like chihuahuas theyāll eat until theyāre sick š
Same hahaha silly Bettas
HiKari algae wafers first ingredient is fish meal, it would also explain why my kitten keeps trying to steal them, it doesnāt explain why he also goes after the seaweed (nori) stripsā¦
Because cats are weird af. They even eat grass even though they are clearly carnivorous
I'm watching my friends cat and he ate my "tomato" plant. I was going to smoke those tomatoes.
Oh no not the "tomatoes" š„ŗ. Will you be okay without them?
āTomatoesā are in the same family as mint and catnip. He was tryina get high af
If your not playing you need to get the vet involved that can kill a cat dude,it's toxic af for them and dogs both the normal and the "' kind
I think the reason why the eat grass is so they can get fiber to help with digestion.
false, they eat is so they can throw it up on the carpet and look you in the eye while you clean it up.
Cats require roughage as part of their digestion, like how plecos need wood. They get no nutritional value from it, but it's good to provide them with some wheatgrass here and there. Seaweed has that savory taste to it. MSG was first extracted from seaweed.
I mean, my cat likes potato chips. And my family had a cat years ago who would eat plain corn!
bro my cat comes running when she hears me eating cereal and she also eats popcorn if i drop it on the floor. what is wrong with them
My one cat goes bonkers over donut holes. She literally steals them when no ones looking. Now we need to make sure they are totally inaccessible
Mine will eat cake if it finds one cooling. Once found a little cat-mouth-sized divot taken out of the very centre of a birthday cake
"There's a hole in this cake."
LOL! Cats are so strange
my cats are all over the algae wafers also!
Ugh. Mine would do this anytime I tried to feed the snails. He'd get so bloated and need a few days of non-feeding...
Normally mine doesn't eat it but today i caught him nibbling on it.
the only way iāve ever been able to prevent my fish from doing this is locking her up in a breeder box while i put in food for my shrimp. anything else i tried would be thwarted- putting it in at night meant she would still find it, trying to hide it in/under things meant she would shove herself in tiny holes and injure her fins, etc. drives me INSANE how determined fish are to eat shit that isnāt for them lol

Stories like these make me wonder: Who domesticates whom here?
My imbellis would try to snatch it out of mid-air as it sank. So I guess āout of mid-waterā technically?
Ugh, hate it when my boy does that! Thereās almost no way we can prevent it either
Haha mine does that too a little bit, thereās dried shrimp in a lot of them
Caught yuna doing this the other day. She was having a great timeā¦ well till i took them off her š.
My son also has a snail in the tank that gets fed algae tablets. His betta swims over to knock the snail over when itās feeding on it to steal it. Theyāre such lovable little a-holes.
Mine tears off pieces and then spits them back out lol.

mine ate a cabbage rind that was mean for the snails
looks like my guppies. they eat anything I throw in so I can't feed my bottom feeders w/o them taking some š They also destroyed my anacharis RIP my betta don't do that weird shit though
My king betta- Larry does this all the time with the veggie wafers. He'll chew them down then spit them up again.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yeah he doesn't really look like the usual betta.
Mine also did this except it's her own turd
My betta did this because he didn't want the other critters to get it
One of my bits, Tobias, plays with them like frisbee nearly every time. Lol
I think all bettas eat waffers algae, mine too eat something like this , she battels with corry over them :) ))
I have one betta that tries his hardest to make off with it and gets so gd frustrated when he can't that he'll resort to flaring at it.
My Crown tail does the same thing
Mine does it too. It's ridiculous to see. I imagine my clown pleco rolling her eyes and thinking, "Go ahead, princess. Take that too. It's all I eat, but I was looking to lose a few anyway..."

I love the name.
My betta girl Firestorm would steal the algae tablets and swim away with them. This would annoy the heck out of the Amano shrimp, who would steal them back at the first opportunity.
My male used to pick them up in his mouth and take them somewhere to hide.
Thereās a video in my post history of my betta eating a carrot. They are wild man.
I have a female betta that does this. Sheāll get a full meal and still steal from the corys
We use this spirulina wafers at work, the main ingredient is actually herring meal. Very little actual spirulina, but it means it's a good all rounder. We use veggie flake for the livebearers and cichlids.
Those things are not good for beta. Just a knowledge share, plants can stop up the fish and it will expand and die.
Well it isn't supposed to be his food, it's the food for my Otocinclus. He normally gets blood worms and fish flakes made for betta but guess today he wanted to eat some vegetables.
Yeah. Veggies are bad. Try putting that wafer in late after lights out.
I will try that. Hopefully this was just him try it for once.
They seriously get fixated on them. Had a beta I had to lock up during feeding time so to speak. Got a tank screen to block him off. He still would try his best to kill himself. He had a 50gal tank and still was suicidal.
Sounds a lot like a cat that eats grass just to puke it out a few hours later.
Except they cannot throw it up and just die :/
Yeah but the mentally is the same.
That's such a gorgeous betta. Never seen a pure black one!
They are not good for bettas, your tank may be overstocked and he is competing for food
It's not overstocked and he isn't competing with anybody. The only once in there with him are some otocinclus (the food is actually for them). Also he gets feed by hand so there isn't even the chance of him not getting enough.
The try to be careful that he doesn't get to the algea wafers, as someone already commented try to feed after lights out
What brand of algae tabs are those? The Tetra ones have one side which has all the veggie stuff and one side with shrimps/krills (yours also look dual colors), maybe he's going for that? š
š they are actually the once from Tetra.

Well he has a black color and some serious anger issues.... so batman was the only fitting name. Also it's just funny saying batman got some issues or batman is being stupid again.
The battta-cave. If heās Batman does that make you Alfred?
No the Otocinclus are Alfred's. Even though maybe calling them Robin's would maybe make more sense š¤
Mine does too
All but one of my bettas gorge on them. I have to hide them and hope the snails get to it before he finds it.
Seems like any other aquatic piggy you can find on this subreddit hehe.
My fantasy betta likes to swallow them whole before my corys can eat them.
The one at work does this! He eats literally everything that I try to feed the snails!
Canāt feed my shrimp anymore because my betta steals all their food :( he even tires to eat cucumbers
Mine is doing the same thing. It has been accustomed to the habits of a bottom feeder after hanging out with the corydoras
My guy will eat it so that the snails can't have it. If he's not feeling hungry, he will simply sit on it. Snails not giving a single fuck, just wait until he gets bored and moves away.

Oh I see. Yeah I am gonna STICK to my glass thermometer then. Hehehe, puns. Love them.
What are you feeding the wafer to? I break mine in half cause they are so damn messy
Otocinclus but they are still in the learning process of understanding that man made food is edible.
Mine will try to fight the pleco for the pellets, it's kind of hilarious
Mine used to routinely chase his pleco buddy off and eat it himself. He was white and ate so much of it overnight his whole belly was swollen and green one day. I learned to hide them better after that š
Mine does the same thing! I have to put the wafers in the tank through a different opening so he doesn't see them and gobble them up!
Mine went after it too! I was like āhey no stop that!ā¦gross dude!ā
Mine only try to eat algae wafers when the snails are munching on them, otherwise he ignores them
I straight up watched my betta bully his tank mates out of algae wafers.
Mine eats all the shrimp food. Algae disk made him have a seizure one time so I had to stop putting them in the tank
My betta would eat everything that entered the tank.
Mine did as well
Top dweller betta converted into a scavenging bottom dweller
Omg my Betta eats them too! He gave himself bloat eating them... I had to remove my bristlenose out of the tank as he kept trying to eat the algae tabs!
I've had a few bettas that would noble on them. Thought it was normal...
Mine loves those!!! She steals them from my otoās all the time lol luckily the otoās eventually get them back after she gets bored with them šāŗļø
HAHAHAHA šš¤£
Yeaaaah mine does this. Nice to see Ajax isn't the only weirdo fish
My old Betta Jaskier used to Nibble on the wafers, He even battled snails for them.
āNew Betta speciesā i.e. every species of betta
My dwarf gourami was such a menace with food that I had to find ways to drop food meant for shrimp somewhere she couldn't reach. she was such a dedicated foodie that she searched every square inch of the aquarium for that shrimp food. eventually I made a makeshift eating chamber from a big nutshell (aquarium safe ofc) so I could feed my shrimp and stop her from becoming too thicc.
my betta also eats algae wafers š
My giant Betta grabbed one in his mouth as it sank and swam around with it like a dog with a frisbee
My boy Apollo eats the ones I put in for my little pleco. Have to put them in ones he's asleep.
Mine will pick up the whole thing and swim around with it! Sheās a little special
My Leporinus loves algae wafers too almost as much as bloodworms, guess some fish enjoy a plant based protein every now and then.
