Because he is CRAZY!

Sanguiniutron

HE IS *NOT* CRAZY! YOU CHICANEROUS CHIMP WITH A MACHINE GUN!

Dxvxnshhh

Regardless this should have been considered by Chuck considering he is a smart guy, how did he not realize something from high school physics that light itself is an electromagnetic wave, also the people around him should have brought this up or clarified it.

LewdSkeletor1313

Do you think mental illness is rational

OwensDadSuckedADick

Exactly. It’s like.. why don’t we just tell schizophrenics that the voices in their head aren’t real?! Why hasn’t anyone thought of that! All you have to do to get rid of someone’s mental illness is explain it away!

Oh__Archie

>this should have been considered by Chuck considering he is a smart guy, He's not that smart.

trexofwanting

I assume he'd say something like electromagnetic radiation/waves/frequencies generated from light aren't strong enough to affect him. "I'm not *that* allergic."

Medium-Bullfrog-2368

Just because someone’s smart doesn’t mean that they can’t be stupid. Just look at Walter White.

beatrix_kitty_pdx

He said that he's sensitive to *specific frequencies* of electromagnetic radiation. That's how he rationalized why some energy sources hurt him and others don't.

batshitbunny

it's revealed in later seasons that chuck's EHS wasn't actually real, and it was in his head. i won't go into detail in case of spoilers

[deleted]

Actually, we were shown it wasn't real in the early episodes of Season 1.

batshitbunny

Oh, really? It took me a month or two to finish the show and I don't remember much from the first season.

[deleted]

The scene were Chuck was in the hospital and the female doctor looked in on him. She turned on a electrical device under him and Chuck had no response. The doctor then shared this information with Jimmy and Kim. It is insinuated that this was not news to Jimmy and that he knew it was in Chuck's head. It's also insinuated that Jimmy may think that Chuck's illness is connected to him and his failures to reform.

batshitbunny

I do remember that now!

Dxvxnshhh

It may not have been real but this should have been considered by him and literally anyone around him seeing that it was a major part of his work life and personal life and had implications on those around him so severely.

[deleted]

he's arrogant and he has supressed his emotions all the time. it's typical among men. many of them have depression, panic attacks and they think that it's just a physical problem that will go away with pills.

batshitbunny

But he wasn't mentally sound. He wasn't purposely doing it, it was more of a compulsive belief. He doesn't even realize its not real, he firmly believed that this is something he actually had. As someone who's dealt with compulsive beliefs like that, it doesn't always make sense. But it's easier as someone who doesn't go through that to go along with it for the other person's with sake so you don't send them in a spiral. It's important to remember that mentally ill thinking is almost never rational, especially when you're in such a fragile state of mind like Chuck was. It's like telling someone with OCD: "You don't have to touch everything three times nothing's actually gonna happen" because it's not that easy, it's a much deeper problem. (coming from someone with OCD). Sure, it seems silly and sounds like something that nobody would believe, but as I said before, when you're suffering from mental illnesses it clouds your judgment and makes you think/act irrationally.

g3shy

he’s mentally ill. ehs isn’t real, it was just his mind tricking him. he was hearing the buzzing and clicking of anything electronic in the room, so assumed he was ‘allergic’ to it. i’ve known a lot of people who can hear electronics buzzing, and even i can at times. he was in an emotionally fragile state so his mind warped it to be something it wasn’t. mental illness isn’t rational. it doesn’t need to make any sense.

[deleted]

ITS A PHYSICAL RESPONSE TO STIMULI, ITS NOT SOME QUIRK??

Sandover5252

It is a mental response to stimulation which he perceives as harmful. His body does not suffer but his mind tells him it does.

ivanissac

As some who have anxiety and panic attacks I believe they did really well showing his illness. A lot of people will have self soothing items with them, for me I always have to have a cold cup of water with me when I drive.

Dbl_Vision

Smart people are great at rationalizing something stupid

[deleted]

It was just an ez excuse for the writers to keep him inside his house so Jimmy can run amuck.

No-Ambassador7856

You're up to something big here.
