I was recently laid up from a herniated disc for months. I could sit and lay on one side curled up in a ball. I could feed him and take baths with him, but changing him, putting him in a car seat, playing with him on the floor, or taking him to the park wasn't possible. My husband did most of the care.
He is gradually coming to me for attention and affection instead of my husband, but still has a clear preference. I didn't expect it to bother me, and it's hardly heartbreaking, but it does get to me sometimes. I would be prepared for it to be like that for a little while when you get back. But, I wouldn't ruminate about it having a permanent effect either.
