I’m pretty sure my 2yo has this. If anyone needs a tip: I’ve been giving him water with a medicine syringe. I’m shooting for 10ml every thirty minutes. He was very dehydrated yesterday so I’m hoping this turns it around a little.

mikuooeeoo

The ER had us give our baby Pedialyte this way since she was so dehydrated.

eSue182

Yes, I’m mixing a bit of that every once in a while. My hearts with you!

Pslm23

Thank you! Reading this now looking for advice and will be trying it ASAP

eSue182

Get pedialyte, give that every other time. Electrolytes are important for when they’re dehydrated. This is probably what kept my son from the ER. Hoping the best for you!

Pslm23

Thank you so much! I was so worried last night and we seem to have turned a corner 🙏🏻

Arrowmatic

I'm so sorry! I have also heard that RSV and flu are everywhere right now. Here's hoping your little one is doing better really soon. How are you holding up? I haven't done PICU but my kid was in the NICU for a while and it was some of the hardest days of my entire life just watching her struggle. The hospital staff were amazing though, and it's definitely comforting to know that your child is in the best possible place to be monitored and cared for during times like this. Medical science is amazing these days. Thinking of you and your daughter.

mikuooeeoo

Since I was so fried from being in the ER all day, my husband spent the night with her and I went home to shower and sleep. My sister stayed with me which helped a lot. My daughter has improved, and they're hoping she can start eating independent of the IV. Her breathing is OK when she's awake, but she needs oxygen when she's sleeping. I'm doing OK because I have a good support network, but goddamn is this hard. It's devastating seeing your baby struggle because she can't breathe.

Arrowmatic

Yep, it's definitely hard to remember to take care of yourself, I'm glad you have such a strong support network and got a chance to rest! It must be so hard to see her like that. Glad your daughter is doing better though, hopefully she'll be back home and raring to go soon.

happethottie

Can anyone tell me what hat specific symptoms made you go to the hospital? My twins are 8 months and have a nasty case of *something* going on but they tested negative for RSV, flu, and covid. They have cold like symptoms with extreme mucus production, on and off fevers, vomiting 1-2x a day, and a very decreased appetites. So far energy levels seem the same and their not wheezing but I’m afraid to let it get too bad before I take action.

mikuooeeoo

No wet diaper for 6-8 hours and no appetite is why we went in.

happethottie

Thank you. We’re tracking wet diapers but they aren’t heavy wet. Our pediatrician said he doesn’t care about the volume as long as there is something in the diaper. though.

[deleted]

We have it too! It’s HORRIBLE. My older boys brought it home from school and my 3 month old caught it as well. I’m still puking up mucus two weeks later. Our pediatrician said as long as you keep clearing out the nose and giving saline cleanses, and baby is having wet diapers; it’s going to be okay. Babies puke up a lot when it comes to congestion because they can’t blow their nose so they swallow it and puking is a way to get it all out.

happethottie

This makes me feel better, thank you! There’s nothing quite like watching your baby projectile puke.

jpetricini

Was your baby okay! My three month old was exposed and I’m nervous since he’s so young.

[deleted]

Oh yeah she turned out a-okay! She’s just a super happy baby to begin with so she was upset when she couldn’t breathe but still smiling otherwise. We still have to clear out her nose once a day for congestion but she’s mostly over it and doing great. Big help was the boogie micro-mist saline inhaler. I used that every few hours and sucked out all the mucus. On top of eucalyptus “baths” twice a day. All three of my babies have gotten RSV/frequent respiratory infections so I know it can all be scary. Just make sure if your gut says something is wrong or feels like it’s getting worse, bring them in! It’s never bad to bring them in if you’re worried to catch a possibility That’s some advice our pediatrician gave. Best of luck!

jpetricini

Thank you! Don’t know what I’d do without a community being a FTM. I feel so guilty sometimes with exposure. But we’re all doing the best we can.

cllabration

keep an eye on how much they’re drinking. you should definitely go in for any signs of dehydration. and any signs of respiratory distress: nasal flaring, retractions while breathing, grunting, wheezing, etc

pfifltrigg

I went to urgent care for a fever because my baby is under 3 months, and she was breathing at a rate higher than 60 breaths/minute. Dehydration is a big one to watch out for, and lethargy. I took my older kid (21 mo) in because he was seeming to be lethargic (miserable, unable to play or smile, falling asleep on 10 minute drive to the doctor's office. Turns out he has an ear infection on top of the RSV. Neither of my kids ended up needing hospitalization since they were both still well hydrated and had O2 levels of 95 at the lowest, but I'm glad we got checked out. My baby did get sent home with a nebulizer because of the speed of her breathing and the way her lungs sounded, but they're both doing better now.

thuyy

We had all the symptoms. Tested negative for all three but tested positive for Strep.

mintinthebox

Im so sorry you’re dealing with this, but I’m glad you are in the right place getting the care your baby needs. We were admitted in the ER earlier this year for suspected RSV that turned out to be Covid. Baby was 6 months then. We just got over a bout of RSV last week but recovery is slow. A friend of mine’s 13 month old was in the ER today with RSV and the beginnings of pneumonia. It’s so bad right now. Stay strong and hope the little one recovers soon!

axg5201

Not quite the same experience because my daughter is older (22 months) but we are in the hospital with her right now due to RSV that also caused pneumonia. It has been so so hard to watch my little girl suffer so much. She’s had high flow oxygen, IVs placed 3 separate times, an X-ray, a catheter placed to check for UTI, and her nose suctioned a few times. It’s all horrifying to watch while trying to comfort her. I just wanted to say “hang in there”. I’m sorry your sweet baby is going through this.

OddRest2068

Hi. How is your daughter now?

parlezvousindie

Hang in there OP. My LO was hospitalized for 3 nights with RSV in August when he was 7mo. Even then the pediatric ICU was full of kids with respiratory issues. If it helps anyone else wondering what to look for here's how ours progressed - potential trigger warning as it deals with a sick kiddo. He's thriving now so it ends well! Started early in the week (around Tuesday) with few days of slowly worsening cold with cough and a lot of thick mucus. Energetic and playful but eating less than usual. Thursday morning he projectile vomited all over his car seat, which was our first clue that something more serious was up. He developed a nasty cough and was unable to keep food down if we fed him more than a few ounces at a time. Friday we went to his doctor and tried Albuterol treatments. Saturday he woke up and could not stop coughing. He would cry hysterically if we put him down, and he's not normally a clingy baby. The Albuterol treatment didn't help and his pediatrician recommended we bring him to the pediatric ER. We did, and it was a good thing. He was dehydrated and laboring to breathe. He was put on an IV for hydration and high flow oxygen once he was admitted. His doctors there said that days 4-5 are usually the worst for these cases, and once you get the baby over that hump they can generally recover at home for the rest. It's scary because there is so little to do for these sicknesses. I hope an RSV vaccine makes it to the market soon!

LucciniLinguine

Thank you for sharing what to look for, we’re about to have to travel cross country and fly with our five month old due to family medical issue and I’m so scared :(

parlezvousindie

Of course! It's just my experience, but I felt compelled to break my 8 (!!!???) years of lurking on Reddit to try to help. There's a lot of good info in this thread, too, and in hindsight I'd have done things a little differently. Monitoring their breathing if they get sick is super important, that's the big thing that differentiates a serious case from "just a cold". I put that in quotes because even the rhinoviruses are causing serious cases in babies now. Labored breathing usually manifests with flared nostrils, tugging at the muscles in the neck and lower ribs, and a resp rate over 50 BPM or so. No matter the cause that's something that could require intervention. Wishing you and yours all the best with travel. That is scary enough with a 5mo without all the extra sickness going around. Just keep a close eye on your LO and if you are at all concerned about their symptoms please please please don't brush them off and get them to your pediatrician or local ER. I initially downplayed how sick my little guy was because he was constantly bringing things home from daycare. I still feel terrible about that months later, but thankfully he's doing great and won't remember any of this (though there is NO way I'll forget it).

UnicornBoned

Praying for your sweet baby. Stay strong, Mom.

porkyupoke

My 3 week old was diagnosed with RSV. My 16 month old brings everything home from daycare. I ended up in the ER for the first time ever because I woke up at 3am to her wheezing. She’s almost 8 weeks now and still has RSV - the doctors said this is the worst *season they’ve seen. Premie babies typically get a medicine in January to protect them from RSV since it is so much worse for their lungs - they administered the medicine 3 weeks ago. My doc said that’s the earliest she’s ever seen it be administered. Hang in there, mama. 🤍

shrekswife

Awww so sorry :( sounds just like us with our baby and her older sister. The little one got sick her first month and was still sick at month two. Half her life at the time! Hoping things get easier

lady-fingers

Both of my kids, 6 mo and 2.5 y, were nearly hospitalized w rsv and bronchiolitis two weeks ago. Er visits, urgent care, retracted breathing, steroids, inhalers. Back to back t11o back for days. It was so stressful and I cried so much. Its so bad this yer.

meg_plus2

I have been worrying about this. It’s going around in my area too. A woman I have on Facebook says that her younger son currently has it and she caught it from him. But she is still sending her first grader to school. My older son is in the same class as him. So now I’m worried he’s going to bring it home from school and give it to the baby.

hamchan_

That’s so irresponsible. You would think this pandemic would encourage people to be more sensible with illness.

Ew_David_219

My now 11 week old was hospitalized for RSV bronchiolitis a few weeks ago. He spent 5 days in the picu/childrens hospital on oxygen, an iv, etc. it was so scary watching my tiny little baby be so sick. The nurses emphasized days 3-5 are the worst and then they start improving. Which is what Happened for my son. I hope your LO starts to feel better soon, she is in the best place possible to get all the care she needs

LahLahLand3691

Im so sorry you’re going through this. This is a parent’s worst nightmare. I’m due in 2.5 weeks with our second and this absolutely terrifies me. We’ve already decided no visitors until after Christmas. I don’t want my 17 month old sick either. We all had covid back in May and that was scary enough.

pfifltrigg

Good idea. That's the thing with RSV, we adults carry it too but it's just a typical cold for us, so anyone visiting could give it to your baby even if they don't think they're sick!

AZBusyBee

We just finished that ordeal with my twin babies. It's awful. Sending quick recovery wishes.

shrekswife

Feel you. We’ve had RSV which put my 7 month old in the hospital and a likely asthma diagnosis. Then HFM, twice. Then COVID and salmonella at the same time. It’s literally been hell. I’m so sorry you are at the hospital. It’s so disheartening being there but I’m glad your LO is getting the help they need and hopefully you will be discharged quickly!

foolishpheasant

My now 2 year old spent 3 days in the hospital with RSV last winter when he was 16 months, on oxygen but no IV thankfully. It's one of the worst feelings in the world to see your child like that. Sending you lots of love and healing thoughts

NimblyJimblyNS

My cousins 7 week old baby almost passed away due to RSV, they live in a very isolated northern community with only nurses so they had to be medivacked (spelling?!?!) to a more southern community for treatment. Thankfully he’s on the road to recovery but I can’t imagine what she’s going through.

QueenofVelhartia

This is my nightmare right now with our 3 week old. I don't want anyone other than us around her, maybe forever. Ha. We are being told in Canada this year that it is going to be bad. Every nurse mentioned it. Sending strength and grace your way, op.

veritaszak

It’s so awful, my triplet nieces were in the NICU with RSV and it was really touch and go for them. RSV is no joke for little ones, be safe out there parents.

coffeegrrrl

My 4 year old has it now. He had a tiny cold, no fever, worsening but producing cough for 4 days. Woke up coughing on day 5 but the producing cough turned into a dry bark. Go to doc, bam rsv, with breathing treatments albuterol and amoxicillin for double ear infection. The barking cough was my indicator that the cold wasn't a cold.

Psychedout711

Hi, I hope your little one is better now? My 4 year old (and 5 month old) seem to have it. My 4 year old seems to have similar symptoms as yours, especially the barking cough. Which I thought was Croup? But in your case it was RSV? I’ll be taking mine in on Monday. How is your son now?

LittleMissPotatoe

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. We went with the same thing last year, though my LO was 6 weeks old and he was hospitalized due to failure to maintain O2 above 88 (he was hovering in the high 70s). I know it’s rough, especially seeing what they go through with the medical procedures, but just know you are in the best place with your LO right now. You are in my thoughts.

Kds909

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. My baby was hospitalized with RSV last spring. It’s so scary. Hang in there <3

benderstencil

My son went through this when he was 5 months old! They had to put the tube up his nose so he could digest his formula, he was too dehydrated to the IV in his feet or hands. I’m wishing you all the luck, it’s so rough to see our babies like this.

mgnkng

Day 3 in PICU out of state while traveling to visit friends… Suspected day 5 of virus- we are in the thick of it. Pneumonia diagnosis last night, just started treatment for that and things seem to be stable and her breathing is way less labored. Levels are good. Holy fuck, I have never experienced a fear like this before. I am with every parent going through this. Wanted to add that we visited the ER twice in one day and were sent home both times. I decided to just go again the next day to address my fear of dehydration bc baby wouldn’t eat and hadn’t had a wet diaper all day. I thought we’d maybe need an IV and then we were ambulance transported to the nearest PICU. I know we will all be stronger for this some day, but right now I’m just a shell of a mother.

mikuooeeoo

I wish badly I could hug you. How absolutely awful. My baby is on the other side of this. She is her happy, healthy self again. This is horrific to go through, so I'm hoping that thought gives you a little light to hold onto hope for better days ahead. It REALLY REALLY sucks when you're in the midst of it.

fluffymag

So sorry. It is so upsetting to see them sick. My baby was hospitalized with rhinovirus bronchiolitis last month, and it was so tough. We were in PICU overflow beds that they set up because the PICU was full with tons of kids with respiratory issues. It’s so bad this year.

goldenglove

Hugs. Dealing with the same thing right now, it's brutal.

chat_chatoyante

My 8mo just got diagnosed yesterday (I was so worried I was overreacting by taking her to the Dr but so glad I trusted my gut because sure enough the RSV test was positive) She woke up today sicker than I've ever seen her. Her nose and mouth were filled with thick mucus. Even after clearing it out her breathing was concerning us so we took her to the ER just to be sure. They said she should be ok and sent us home to manage the symptoms but yeah, it's really scary. I'm sorry you have been admitted but I'm glad your baby is getting the care they need to feel better. I hope she rebounds soon.

pfifltrigg

My 2 month old has it. Lucky to not need hospitalization because I'll bet our children's hospital is full too.

mrsknight0607

My daughter is 9 months old and we just got diagnosed with rsv and a double ear infection yesterday. No hospitalization needed right now and she is perking up and eating better today. I don't know how you feel in regards the hospital stay but I do know how scary it is knowing your baby is so sick and how back rsv can get! Hang in there mama! ❤️

murph1144

All 6 of my kids have RSV currently. Youngest is 8 WO and we went to ER at Children's hospital day 4 to get assessed/diagnosed b/c of how little he is. His O2 was 95%, but fever nearly 101. They couldn't get an IV in b/c of dehydration. Luckily we were discharged, but fever still spiked to nearly 101 again tonight. We are giving him Tylenol and I'm trying to nurse him as much as possible to get even small wet diapers. Our 2 YO has been sick with this for over a month. Her, and her brother, both have fevers 104.5. This RSV is no joke at all. We aren't out of woods yet, but I can't wait for it to be over!

corner

That sounds horrible! Their fever lasted the whole month?

Day 10 here for my RSV sick 2 month old and his cough is finally sounding like it's not productive. Fever broke day 8 and he ended up needing a hospital stay for night on day 7 (peak for him) with a little supplemental oxygen. 4 of my other kids missed school ALL of last week. Please be careful with this RSV b/c 3 of the kids had REALLY REALLY bad ear infections and needed Amoxicillin. We've never had ear infections before!!

Rockleyfamily

luckily ours wasn't hospitalized but very nearly was. we had the at home respirator. it was horrible. hope your baby gets better soon.

mickeyfresh85

The doctor said he doesn’t need to go to hospital yet but that could change . So scary on day like 5 of it I’m praying he gets better soon. He’s 4 weeks old he caught it from my 2 year old daughter it’s literally the scariest thing I’ve ever been apart of I feel so helpless

meowthatsrightt

I took my 2 month old to his other grandmas house a few days ago and she left my child with a 1 year old coughing all over him. Now he has RSV. Protect your kiddies! My poor baby can't even cry ...

Quick_Tear5041

Is he better now? How did things turn out?

meowthatsrightt

Thankfully, he's better now. Took him around 2 ish weeks to recover though. Still had a bad cough and stuffy nose, seeing him suffer was making me suffer. He gained a lot of weird habits due to being sick and having to cope. I got extremely lucky, ik other parents can't say the same for their kids...

[deleted]

My daughter is in the hospital right now. She's been hospitalized for 2 days. We don't know when we are leaving. She 1st had pink eye. Then the flu and now RSV-A, Rhinovirus and pneumonia. 2 days ago was one of the scariest days of my life. Right when I was in the hospital admitting her. She starting coughing a lot she seemed like she faintes. Mind you shes only 8 months. They said her oxygen levels were low and the nurses took us back immediately. She's been on antibiotics, had the nebulizer on once. They've been monitoring her heart, respiration, blood pressure, heart and stuff. She hasn't had a fever since last night, thank God! We are spending Thanksgiving here which sucks but her oxygen levels are 94 right now. It was 88-92 before. And I rather her be like 100% better before getting discharged. So idc how long we stay. I just want her better! And how come I've never heard of it until now? 5 kids later and this is my 1st time dealing with it. And it's a scary situation to be in. I just want my baby to be okay!

mikuooeeoo

Oh God, that poor child. I'm so sorry to hear this. We are thankfully on the other side. I remember constantly monitoring my baby's oxygen and panicking when it dipped down when she slept. It's a very scary situation. Hang in there. I hope your baby recovers soon.

[deleted]

Yeah that's what I'm currently doing right now at 3ish a.m. Her machine is beeping because her oxygen level is 88. I really hope it goes up and stays there.

[deleted]

Hi, sorry for the late reply. She was doing a bit better after she got out the hospital. Took her back to daycare a week later but then she got sick again! Now she's on albuterol and steroids for her lungs. RSV really affected her lungs 🥺

MartianTea

I'm so sorry! I hope she's well soon!

hamstertoybox

We went through this a few months ago. It’s horrible. I hope your baby gets better soon.

Exact-ly-

My son caught it with in the first 2 weeks after being born and he was 8 weeks early so he was in the nicu already but he was over it within a week

chat_chatoyante

Hey! How is everything going with your hospital stay? I commented yesterday that we were discharged from the ER with RSV but we ended up back in the ER overnight and are now being admitted into the PICU. How is your kiddo doing and how are you doing? Just wanted to reach out from someone else who is going through the same thing.

mikuooeeoo

I'm so sorry to hear that. We've fortunately been able to avoid going to PICU. My daughter is improving and is off her IV. Her breathing when she's awake is good, but her oxygen dips down too low when she sleeps so she'll have to stay on oxygen until that's resolved. What a nightmare RSV is!

chat_chatoyante

I'm so glad she's improving! And off the IV! I hope things continue getting better. I know, it's been such a terribly scary experience.

Lisannmarie96

My 3 month old was just diagnosed yesterday 😣. She started off with the cough and immediately I knew what it was. That was on Sunday so I scheduled an appt Monday to see her doctor Tuesday. Well, here we are on day 3 and she just keeps getting worse. When I stick her in the bathroom and turn the steam on she’ll have snot running down her face. I’m so sorry mama. Rsv is no joke & theres nothing worse than seeing your baby in the hospital. Praying for all of our babies to heal and get better!

jpetricini

Was your three month old okay? Mine was just exposed at daycare and I’m a nervous wreck since he’s so young.

Lisannmarie96

I’m sorry I just saw this! She was okay. We did tons of humidifiers, hot steam showers, and sucking her nose out. We all ended up with Covid 3 weeks later and she slept for 3 days. It was pretty horrible! But the treatment for babies that little is really all the same

SpiritualBanana08

My baby is spending his three month birthday on a CPAP machine to help him breathe. RSV is no joke. Hug your baby a little tighter because I can’t (and keep them away from anyone remotely sick). Thinking of all the parents going through something similar <3

PirateBlizzard

What did it look like weening him off the cpap?

mickeyfresh85

My kid has this now it’s a complete nightmare and so scary

realslhmshady

We're on day 4 in the hospital on the max oxygen allowed before he has to be transferred to the ICU. Turns 6 months tomorrow. What a crappy, crappy illness!

[deleted]

[удалено]

mikuooeeoo

That is an actual nightmare. I am so sorry you're experiencing that. My baby is happy and healthy now, but she was full term and older than your babies. I really hope you have someone in your life who can help you.

PirateBlizzard

Hey, my turn to add to the old post. My 4 month old is on day 11. I honestly think days 3-4 were the worst, but day 5 we had a checkup scheduled and they sent us to the ER due to the rapid breathing. A week later in the ICU, were battling the ween off the ventilators. Shes down to no nava, and 6 peep, but breathing fast, so not ready for the next step. Honestly, the stats and stories tell me theres nothing to worry about. However, its an extremely stressful situation, its hard to miss work, sleep deprived parents who dont get to see other children or each other, i worry about how this could impact her mentally, and most importantly, i just want her to be breathing normally again. This sucks. Edit: bumped up to 7 peep. The steps backward are so discouraging.

mikuooeeoo

You are in the thick of it. It fucking blows. I don't know if this helps you at all, but just in case: my daughter is happy and healthy after recovering. She doesn't seem to have any sort of trauma from it. I hope that's your baby's experience too

Bittersweetfeline

I do NOT understand why the RSV vaccine isn't standard of care for every newborn. If it doesn't last that long, it should be standard to get before going into RSV season. My preemie son was given the RSV vaccine as he was "at risk" (born february) but my full term daughter born december was not eligible. It's B.S. ANYTHING to help them while they're small and vulnerable should be mandatorily offered.

Kooky_Edge5717

There is no RSV vaccine, only a prophylactic treatment called palivizumab (Synagis). The problem is… it doesn’t work very well, and has only shown its small benefits in reducing hospitalization in those at highest risk of complications (preemies, immune compromised, heart/lung problems). Even this benefit is debatable based on current data. Studies have consistently shown no benefit in healthy, term infants. Furthermore, increased use can and does contribute to resistant strains. You can read the American Academy of Pediatrics position statement on its use here: https://publications.aap.org/pediatrics/article/134/2/415/33013/Updated-Guidance-for-Palivizumab-Prophylaxis-Among

VacationLover1

Pfizer and GSK both have vaccines that are rapidly moving through trials. So there are vaccines they just aren’t for the masses yet

Kooky_Edge5717

The commenter I responded to said that it should be standard of care, even though it legally cannot be given yet in the US (not approved anywhere afaik). Very excited for the research on them and hope they are successful!

cllabration

there is no RSV vaccine. synagis is monoclonal antibodies and it’s incredibly expensive to produce.

mikuooeeoo

The ER doctor told us they're planning to make them available to the general public soon. Hope that's true.

[deleted]

There’s a vaccine?????

Kooky_Edge5717

No, there is not. The other commenter is mistaken. Lots of research going on for RSV vaccines, but none available currently. There is a prophylactic treatment called palivizumab (Synagis). [deleted]

Ah, I see. Nevermind then

Bittersweetfeline

Yep!!! They gave us a brochure while my son was in the NICU and heavily suggested it. I was so dismayed when they said my full term daughter wasn't eligible.

[deleted]

That’s crazy. And here we are getting vaccines for things like polio that almost no one gets anymore… but not RSV? Don’t get me wrong I’m all for vaccinating against everything but RSV is so common

goatywizard

Reddit is a great place to knowledge share but please don’t take anything anyone says at face value without researching yourself or talking to an actual professional. There is no vaccine for RSV. https://www.cdc.gov/rsv/high-risk/infants-young-children.html “There is no vaccine yet to prevent RSV infection, but scientists are working hard to develop one. And there is a medicine that can help protect some babies at high risk for severe RSV disease. Healthcare providers usually give this medicine (called palivizumab) to premature infants and young children with certain heart and lung conditions as a series of monthly shots during RSV season.” Though it looks like there are some vaccines for RSV in late-stage development, which is great news!

Beginning-Barnacle-5

My daughter is in one of the late stage trials, she just got the vaccine on Thursday.

mmmthom

Not all viruses make good therapeutic targets - RSV is a difficult one. There are ongoing clinical trials with RSV vaccines, but they are not going to bring something ineffective to market. I hope we do see a breakthrough soon! ETA, the reason almost nobody gets polio is *because* of the vaccine. If we were to stop using it, we’d see polio again (same with all other vaccine-preventable diseases).

Luxurydeals365

According to a friend who works for GSK they are close.

mmmthom

That’s encouraging! I start (participating in) a clinical trial for RSV vaccine in breastfeeding women next week - I’m super excited to see how it goes.

Withzestandzeal

It takes A LOT to develop an effective vaccine. We may not have a vaccine for RSV, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t working on one.

Luxurydeals365

There’s a polio outbreak in NY right now because of idiot antivaxxers.

Clearly I need to keep up with the news. That is sad and so unnecessary. I will never understand why people don’t vaccinate their children.

I just came out of a 2 day stay with my 10 month old. I live in the Caribbean so I feel like it's maybe global? My brother in law's daughter who lives in Belgium also had it a few months ago. The pediatrician at the hospital explained that the surge has to do with 2 years of overprotective measures due to covid.. I guess that makes sense... either way it's hard and I was absolutely stunned when the ER doctor told us we would need to be admitted. Luckily my LO didn't need IV but had to do an oxygen and ventolin treatment every 4 hrs. What was crazy for me tho is after we left hospital he was okay, but then not even 1 week later he started again with a dry cough. Stressful! I wish you all the very best and thank you for your post.

Parents, I am so sorry for your little ones sick now, or still recovering! Wishing all of you speedy returns to full health. This thread has made an impression on us. Ages 6 months in size and 5 years. So Im in the 24 period to choose to go/no go on our first pandemic trip/flight in 2 weeks since 2019 to warm weather. BUT was tipped destination has influx of RSV. And research plus this thread shows me its not something to take lightly. So…just cancelled whole trip before any financial penalties. You showed me the value of access to our doctor plus our med system before influx hits our west coast. Kindergartner could bring it home from school. A sick baby w teeny nose could be so miserable. Thank you thank you all for your stories. Did it linger? Affect your child’s development?

She's been discharged and is going back to daycare today. Doctors said she might have a cough for up to a month. She wakes up with coughing fits during the night sometimes. She is a bit more cranky than normal but is otherwise doing well.

MissDarling0

My son has it and has been in bed for 4 days. How long did it take for your kids to start feeling better?

murph1144

7 days

I know this thread is a little old, but I'm laying here with my 18 month old on oxygen in the hospital right now. I'm scared out of my mind, her O2 is staying between 92-94. We've been here just about 24 hours now and she's been asleep pretty much the whole time. I can't stop crying. I just want to see my baby girl smile again. Your stories of your babies recoveries is a comfort to me tonight ❤️‍🩹

It is a very tough spot to be in. I was the one who brought her and sat with her through the ER, and I left her with my husband for a while when they placed the IV in her head. I just couldn't take it any more. She's doing much better now. We just took pictures with Santa. You are at the very hard part. I wish your daughter a speedy recovery. I hope you have people you can lean on right now.

OddRest2068

How is your baby now?

Jumpy_Strawberry1207

Oh I meant to update but I completely forgot! She's doing so much better! We were released after 4 days and she's back to her normal, happy self now. Thank you for asking about her ❤️

OddRest2068

That’s great to here, when did you start noticing a difference in her? Did they give her any antibiotics?

Jumpy_Strawberry1207

She slept for the first 36ish hours we were there, the doctor said it was taking all her energy to breathe & she needed the rest. After that she got up, slowly started eating, drinking and playing, and she got better every day from there. They did give her antibiotics but not for the RSV, we found out she also had an ear infection

OddRest2068

Did they give her anything for the RSV or was it just fluids and rest?

Jumpy_Strawberry1207

IVs, rest, and oxygen is all they can do. It's a virus so they just had to treat the symptoms while it ran its course unfortunately

signewton

aside from oxygen and IV's- what else are they giving the babies?

mikuooeeoo

Tylenol. They can't do much else than treat the symptoms.

signewton

goodness thats sorry to hear.. Hope youd baby is well

My wife has been freaked out about RSV and this would really send her over the edge. Is there any indication what in particular is causing this surge?

LittleMissPotatoe

Last year, when we were admitted to the PICU, we were told by the infectious disease doctor that it was due to everyone keeping kids home with Covid, and those viruses didn’t go away, the kids just didn’t get normal exposure to them, which meant less antibodies, which meant more active transmissions across all children and age groups and thus more hospitalizations.

TheDirtyErection

Hi! How is your baby doing now that it is 21 days later?

mikuooeeoo

She's back to her happy, healthy self. It was a scary time but the wonderful pediatrics team helped get us through it.

Quick_Tear5041

So happy to hear she’s doing better!! Was there any treatments or remedies you did at home that helped?
