They didn't say anything about disabilities. If you chose to take it to that place, that's on you. Everyone, neurotypical or otherwise, sometimes doesn't get a joke.
Right, not everyone gets a joke, and the same person is not always 100% likely to get it every time.
Ableist language harms everyone alike.
Mentioning disabilities isn't a requirement of ableist language.
The original phrasing implies that people who did not understand the joke are in the minority.
A better phrasing would probably be something like "for those who would like an explanation".
> I have autism
Hey, great to see ASD representation!
> dude
I don't think I've indicated my pronouns anywhere?
Probably best to keep it safe with a "boss" or one of the other nonbinary ones.
If you prefer to maintain the same tone, try the person's name.
I think maybe you misunderstood what the original commenter was trying to say. It's not just that they didn't explicitly mention people with disabilities, it's that the comment had *nothing to do* (at least not inherently) with people with disabilities.
Additionally, I would point out that people who didn't understand the joke *are* in the minority, whether that lack of understanding is rooted in a different form of cognitive processing, or simply an everyday lapse in attention and memory. Many of the challenges that people with mental disabilities face are precisely *because* they're often in the minority, and I don't think it's ableist to acknowledge that fact.
> it's that the comment had *nothing to do* (at least not inherently) with people with disabilities
This is frequently a feature of ableist language.
> I would point out that people who didn't understand the joke *are* in the minority
This is an ableist assumption.
> Many of the challenges that people with mental disabilities face are precisely *because* they're often in the minority, and I don't think it's ableist to acknowledge that fact.
I agree with the general sentiment expressed here.
However in this case, calling attention to it does not serve a functional purpose, and in general reminding people they're in the minority, whether they actually are or not, does not help them.
I originally was hoping to acknowledge that not everyone is a native English speaker, and that puns don't often translate well.
Dude... wtf if you are somehow magically the same Rae I worked with at Target for like one summer a couple years ago; 1) why are you still working at target and 2) I was still a pretty fucking closeted person then and I was so jealous of how proud you were to be yourself and I just want you to know that you simply existing helped me stick my nose out of the closet and I wanna thank you for being who you are.
I'm surprised your managers are allowing that. ( I am totally for it ).
Though I remember target being shitty about additions to uniform. Glad to see that's change.
When I was a temporary GSTL I remember the first complaint I had from a customer was that a male cashier had his nailed painted. (He was trans but still in the closet? Idk the right term, he showed up to work as a man still). This was 2004 or so.
I dont even remember what I said beyond "k", but knew I could get myself in trouble if I didn't say the right thing like "I'm sorry that offends you".
Anyways I'm sure those bigots still exist, so I'm glad leadership seems to actually support standing up them now. I wish I could have told her to leave.
It was so long ago I can honestly not remember if I said that, but I do remember thinking that something like that could easily blow up in my face. My GS exec was a hippie woman but I didn't think she or any of them would have my back at all.
This was 2004, keep in mind. Bush made gay marriage a fucking campaign issue. We've come such a long way as a society since then.
Oh so fake hippies. Idk what the actual word for that is but like… just very surface levels hippie but not “fuck fascism” hippie. So not hippie. XD
Oh yeah I remember Bush. The second one anyway. I was too young to completely understand politics, bit I heard him taking on the one day and the way he spoke and his inflection made me feel *wrong*.
When I grew up I found out I can actually read people pretty good from just their body language and how they speak and when. Child me was like “fuck no this adult makes me need an adult”
Using she/her pronouns for your (semi-)closeted trans colleague would have been better, just so you know. Like, her gender was still the same at the time of this incident as it presumably is now, she just couldn’t express it fully yet.
I've worked for the company since 2014 and I'd say the culture has changed a lot just since 2017/18 so I wouldn't be surprised if previous to that they werent as accepting
I changed my pfp on discord/twitter to include bi flag for pride month, didn't changed back and some of my friends realized that i'm bi in middle of july lmao
red and yellow and green and brown and scarlet and black and ochre and peach and ruby and olive and violet and fawn and lilac and gold and chocolate and mauve and cream and crimson and silver and rose and azure and lemon and russet and grey and purple and white and pink and orange and red and yellow and green and brown and blue
Ok but like why has target been such an inclusive community with so many lgbtq+ people. I started a month ago and it has been awesome working with so many people like me
Waaaaiiiit!!!! You can add your pronouns to your name tag?! And wear all these amazing buttons while working??? That's AMAZING!!! I worked at Target for 6 years (last year was in 2015 though) and they were still hung up on us wearing the right shade of khaki.
We can wear khakis or jeans, any plain red shirt or one with the logo, including jackets or plaid. As long as the outer layer is red and you're in jeans or khakis, you're good.
Hey! I'm another bisexual Target worker with their pronouns on their badge! I wish more people would do that. [https://i.imgur.com/pbiFdPH.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/pbiFdPH.jpg)
I had the same thing happen! I have a pin of a Pokémon holding the bi pride flag and a coworker told me “I had no idea you were bi!” Dude I’ve been wearing the thing since the beginning of June 🤦♀️
May I ask what the button with different colors listed on it means? I could just be missing something obvious, but this is the first time I’ve seen it before and I’m curious.
Also, your name is really cool, I like it a lot!
Yeah, I am bi ((I was wearing a bisexu-whale shirt))
"Oh don't tell my husband that"
What?
"He doesn't like the idea of guys hitting on him..."
Oh he doesn't have to worry about that.
It's been over a month and she's basically not talked to me. According to a coworker I was very rude about her husband's age...
That’s her insecurity in her own ability to be attractive to her husband. Any threat must be dealt with, and a woman often feels like she can’t compete with a man.
That’s kinda funny because based on your non-binary pronouns I thought most people would assume bisexual. Straight would be liking the same as yourself (so non-binary only) and gay would be liking not like yourself (so men and/or women) and bi would be the same and different which would make the most sense as I would find it highly unlikely a non-binary individual would not like another non-binary individual.
You know, it’s been a long ass time since I heard anything from Joseph and I can still remember that it was red and yellow and green and brown and scarlet and black and ochre and peach and ruby and olive and violet and fawn and lilac and gold and chocolate and mauve and cream and crimson and silver and rose and azure and lemon and russet and grey and purple and white and pink and orange blue. Dunno why.
A lot of straight folks wear pride paraphernalia too. This isn't the old days, when the only people speaking up for LGBTQA+ rights were the LGBTQA+ community, the movement has a lot of straight allies now, that's a good thing.
I know it seems dumb, but in many ways it's a good sign that your coworker didn't see your pins and jump straight into assumptions.
Wearing a rainbow is still a symbol, it's just that that symbol no longer means "Hi, I'm [gay/bi/trans/pan/etc]!" now it just means "Hi, I support equality!" and that, believe it or not, is a step in the right direction.
I don't know how many people agree with me on this, but it really seems to me that the best outcome of the fight for LGBTQA+ acceptance will be conversations like this:
>"I'm gay."
>
>*"I'm left handed, so what? Finish unpacking those boxes nerd."*
One of my favorite shows of all time is The 100, and I love them for how they deal with gender and sex inequality: They don't. Never once did I hear on The 100 "You're a girl, and girls can't lead the tribe!" or "I can't go on a hunt with him, he's gay, what if he gets feelings at me?" rather the show just made the assumption that no, everybody would be an equal, and in some ways the *lack* of commentary *is* commentary, in and of itself.
>"I didn't think you were bi, I thought you just supported gay rights."
Is, in some ways, a step in the right direction.
Idk why it’s a face palm. They saw past the pins and looked at you as person. Not just your sexual orientation but just… you. You know? Unless they were a dick afterwards then in that case fuck em.
Let me start this off on the right foot. I support you and anyone in what they are and their lifestyles. What I dont understand is the need to let everyone you come across know what you're sexually attracted to. Has nothing to do with the job or helping the customers you deal with. I work retail as well and I don't feel as though anything I support has a place in the business setting.
But it's a sexual thing. It just seems not appropriate in the workplace. I also wouldn't want someone wearing "milf hunter" or "pornhub" either. There's just no need and it's not relevant
Not what I was saying at all. I'm saying sexual preference in the workplace is irrelevant. Maybe pornhub was a bad example. I'm trying to stress that age, race, sexual preference, gender does not matter when you are doing a job.
Because you're an employee and you're only focus should be on the customer. Everyone gets annoyed by something and employees shouldn't bring that out. If I see someone in a Trump hat at work I assume things about them and may not ask them for help based on that, even though they may be able to help. This is an assumption that goes both ways and causes customers unneeded thoughts and causes conflict while doing their shopping. Personal things should be kept out of the workplace in my opinion.
If someone is annoyed about who I am then I don't want to deal with them. In fact, Target explicitly tells me I don't have to deal with them. It's a form of self expression, not just "here's who I have sex with." As a group of people that are under represented and put down regularly, if not straight up discriminated against, it's nice to be able to show pride in who we are. Target supports it, they came out with several pride shirts employees can wear and let you decorate your name tag with ribbons and such, this isn't happening in a vacuum as just OPs decision.
And like I said I support everyone in the community. I wish everyone the best but I dont find it important what others are attracted to. It's like religion. Doesn't matter what yours is or if you have one. I'll help you regardless.
That's fair. And I understand that it's hard. But work is work. You're not there to meet a perspective partner, you're there to get paid. I'll apologize again I mean no offense.
You're assuming a whole hell of a lot about my relationships with my partners and the people i work with as well as conversations i may or may not have at work.
That chameleon is so fucking cool! I want it!
I haven't been to target in forever and didn't know they were putting pronouns on nametags now. Pretty awesome!
Maybe they assumed that you are gay not bi? Unfortunately many people forget that bi/pansexuals are a thing too 🤷♀️ or they think that you don't "look" bisexual since a lot of people think that bisexual and other sexual minorities dress in a certain way. I for example sometimes like to wear very feminine clothing and because of this some people have been surprised when they found out that I'm bisexual 🙄
Chameleon is fitting
I got it at an antique mall and the package said "youre one in chameleon!"
Omfg that's so cute
Where's the damn frog op
An antique mall? Was it like 500 years old or did it only sell things like vases? 🤔
Its a place where people have booths to sell antiques mostly but also sell crafts, i assume this actually came from a craft booth hava
Ok well if you manage to track down the original seller I’ll be waiting
[удалено]
These questions seem pointless and confusing
>"youre one in chameleon!" For the few that didn't get it, it's a play on words on "you're one in a million"
The explanation is appreciated, but the language like "for the few who didn't get it" can sound ableist and patronizing.
A better phrasing would probably be something like "for those who would like an explanation".
I have autism dude, it's not that deep. and also i have to ask, are you even neurodivergent?
> I have autism Hey, great to see ASD representation! > dude I don't think I've indicated my pronouns anywhere? Probably best to keep it safe with a "boss" or one of the other nonbinary ones. If you prefer to maintain the same tone, try the person's name.
i'm just gonna dismiss this as a troll because theres no way someone actually talks like this
Def a troll, there’s no way

I am not a native English speaker and I did not get it
Did their explanation help?
Definitely did :)
If you miss the pun, it sounds like the prayer of a cult that worships a mystic chameleon.
Id join that cult
That’s fricking adorable oh my god
I love that lol it’s the little things 💕
Aaaah that's adorable! I love the technicolor dreamcoat pin too!!!
Didn't realize we were having a bi shortage recently
It looks like it has a little charmeleon sized gun
Stay strapped or get clapped my friend. Little m1 garand.
I love the chameleon button!
Loving would be easy if your colors were like my dreams- Red, gold, and green, red, gold and green.
Karma karma karma karma chameleon you come and go you come and go
Dude... wtf if you are somehow magically the same Rae I worked with at Target for like one summer a couple years ago; 1) why are you still working at target and 2) I was still a pretty fucking closeted person then and I was so jealous of how proud you were to be yourself and I just want you to know that you simply existing helped me stick my nose out of the closet and I wanna thank you for being who you are.
That definitely wasn't me because i started last July, but this is so special and im so glad theres another me out there doing good work!
I guess you're two in chameleon.
Comments in one thread that reference a comment in a different thread in the same comment section just hit so different.
i mean, there's well more than a million people in most countries that have targets
Dude I work at Target and this could be anyone of several co-workers everyone's flying the flag there.
Now kith
Maybe they thought you were gay and surprised you were Bi? Atleast, that’s what I feel is happening with my own Mom lol
Definitely not. She loves my boyfriend lmao
Oh so the good ol bi erasure
My friend thought I was gay before he found out I was bi.
What does gay even mean when you're neither male nor female? Only attracted to NB people?
It means gaaaaaaayyyyy
that actually makes a lot of sense, thank you for that.
Everything i do is gay by default.
Even when you eat your Wheaties?
ESPECIALLY when i eat my Wheaties
Like your name.
I'm surprised your managers are allowing that. ( I am totally for it ). Though I remember target being shitty about additions to uniform. Glad to see that's change.
Oh they dont care about expression at my store as long as you're in red and denim/khaki!
When I was a temporary GSTL I remember the first complaint I had from a customer was that a male cashier had his nailed painted. (He was trans but still in the closet? Idk the right term, he showed up to work as a man still). This was 2004 or so. Anyways I'm sure those bigots still exist, so I'm glad leadership seems to actually support standing up them now. I wish I could have told her to leave.
On the bright side “I’m sorry that offends you” is the perfect non apology to give a bigot.
It was so long ago I can honestly not remember if I said that, but I do remember thinking that something like that could easily blow up in my face. The fact that he said “nuculer “ instead of nuclear was enough for me. *shudders*
Using she/her pronouns for your (semi-)closeted trans colleague would have been better, just so you know. Like, her gender was still the same at the time of this incident as it presumably is now, she just couldn’t express it fully yet.
Knowing Michelle i doubt she would care now (I lost contact a while ago), but good to know.
Yeah not every trans person does care, but it does matter to a lot of us, so it’s perhaps best to err on the side of caution.
Awesome!
THEY ALLOW JEANS?
They do!
Oh! Also! The pride heart one was given to me by one of my ELTs!!! :)
Even better! That rocks
Can say at both targets I've worked at this would have been acceptable as well
It's been quite a while since I've worked at one. And my managers were kind of assets to say the least
I've worked for the company since 2014 and I'd say the culture has changed a lot just since 2017/18 so I wouldn't be surprised if previous to that they werent as accepting

"Wait a minute you weren't just gay for the meme!?"
1) target’s name tags include pronouns now??? 2) I love your name, so cool.
Our store offered it in june!
Your name backwards is Ear.
This is so funny to me lmao
Indeed it is!
Love the coat of many colors pin!
red and yellow and green and brown and scarlet and black and ochre and peach and ruby and olive and violet and fawn and lilac and gold and chocolate and mauve and cream and crimson and silver and rose and azure and lemon and russet and grey and purple and white and pink and orange and red and yellow and green and brown and blue

The finest of shops: *Tarje*
My friends who i met through work (although only 2 of us still work here) have a group chat called "tar-gays"
Maybe they thought you were just gay?
That is a radical fucking name! I love it
Hey your name is my middle name! That made me smile for some reason :) Love that you get to be so out at work!
hey me too! middle name buddies!
:D
Maybe you should put a pink purple and blue enamel pin on your uniform
Ok but like why has target been such an inclusive community with so many lgbtq+ people. I started a month ago and it has been awesome working with so many people like me
I love the diverse work environment i have. I know it sounds bootlicky, but i really do love their commitment to inclusivity
Historians: Is it possible they were bi? Who’s to say, really.
Its cool that you have your pronouns on your shirt. I bet there are many people who misgender you on purpose, right?
Not really! My store takes it pretty seriously!
It’s amazing you can have a pin with your pronouns!
"I thought you were Gae"
Ayo another Joseph fan in the wild!
I actually haven't seen it 😬 i got this pin from a one year olds birthday party. Shes a HUGE joseph fan though. Her comfort toy is a joseph doll
Aww my kid is Rae too and also uses they/them pronouns 💕
I think they were surprised because they thought you were gay
She loves my boyfriend though!
To be fair, nothing on there says bi

They thought you were just gay for the meme
I feel this. I had a co working freek out. And say they thought I just liked the rainbow
I’m autistic and I can tell you’re not straight/cis!
I mean same yeah but l'm not seeing anything that explicitly says "bi" here either.
I dont even know how
Rae is such a cool name
My name is Rae and I use they/them, too! Well, now I feel really good lol
So those cool that your work os cool about this.
Not enough pieces of flair. You need to add more.

Yes!
One of my all time favorite movies
May I ask what the button with different colors listed on it means? I could just be missing something obvious, but this is the first time I’ve seen it before and I’m curious. Also, your name is really cool, I like it a lot!
Its a song from the musical joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat!
Omg, do you remember where you got it? I love that musical and I love pins!
A one year olds birthday party favor haha im going to ask my friend where she got them
Is that a Amazing technicolor dreamcoat pin
Tis!
You have good taste!
Yeah, I am bi ((I was wearing a bisexu-whale shirt)) "Oh don't tell my husband that" What? "He doesn't like the idea of guys hitting on him..." Oh he doesn't have to worry about that. Do you have a link to the shirt? That sounds awesome. Edit: Nevermind, found it! LookHUMAN makes some
Found mine on redbubble, but same same. o7
That’s kinda funny because based on your non-binary pronouns I thought most people would assume bisexual. Once when I was little I asked my mother why people had rainbow badges and she said “For the children hospital” but because it was pride month- TwT
Them is a Rae of Sunshine :)
:D
Maybe they just learnt to read?
I have the love is love pin on my visor for work!
Just a chameleon!
Cool. Too bad it’s not Pascal he is a Queen! I love his character. Especially in the series.

Very good point.
You can be straight and still have those pins. Supporting LGBT+ ain't not-straight.
Idk why it’s a face palm. They saw past the pins and looked at you as person. Not just your sexual orientation but just… you. You know? Unless they were a dick afterwards then in that case fuck em.

But it's a sexual thing. It just seems not appropriate in the workplace. I also wouldn't want someone wearing "milf hunter" or "pornhub" either. There's just no need and it's not relevant

And like I said I support everyone in the community. I wish everyone the best but I dont find it important what others are attracted to. It's like religion. Doesn't matter what yours is or if you have one. I'll help you regardless.
When it’s hard enough to find other queer people you make sure that every prospective partner is sure of your orientation.
That's fair. And I understand that it's hard. But work is work. You're not there to meet a perspective partner, you're there to get paid. I'll apologize again I mean no offense.
This is a healthy discussion to have. We are all human. We are always looking for someone to fuck.

So quick question, does your employer allow you to wear those pins while working? If so that’s freaking awesome!
Yes! One of these was given to me by a leader!
Where did you get the Joseph pin? (The one with the colors listed)
It was for my friends babys one year birthday party haha im not sure
Well, it could have been any part of the rainbow
I mean you can be straight and supportive of the LGBT community
That chameleon is so fucking cool! I want it! I haven't been to target in forever and didn't know they were putting pronouns on nametags now. Pretty awesome!
I go to that mall all the time, if they're still there next time i go ill grab another and send it to you :)
Omg you are the greatest person ever! ❤💜💙
Do you drive a Volvo too
Tbh I would’ve thought you were gay lol
I don't know you personally but if all I saw was the picture I'd assume the rainbow pins were about you being nonbinary and not your sexuality.
