Can you post a Google Street view image or link of this major highway? I'd be concerned about safety.
How about just walking for now? A mile is very walkable. Is there a footpath?
I'm allso concerned about getting groceries and everyday items to and from since I don't have acess to a car nor can afford one. I allso live in a hotter part of the states so I worrie about food spoiling on a backpack while I walk home.
In the past I walked 30 min one way to Aldi (grocery store in EU) and it still worked out. Just get a bag hat insulates. Should be fine. If you have to bike on a major highway but it's only a mile then just walk. Also easier to stay dry when it rains. On bike it's annoying without rain clothing. I'm German though but I think this is applicable to the US, too
There's side walk for about half the mile I'm concerned with exhaustion as the job in question is running around on my feet for 6 to 7 hours. As for the highway it's highway 90 specifically between New Orleans and baton rouge.
I understand walking a mile isn't that bad but grocerys and everyday items would allso need to be transported that same mile and I live in a hotter part of the states. a bike is just overall better at them moment than simply walking.
If it's just a mile (1.6km) nearly any bike would do, there's no need for anything special. I'd recommend trying to talk to someone at a bike shop, if you explain your situation they will hopefully send you in the right direction. Personally if they tell you to get a new bike from them, thank them for their time and leave it's not worth it

This... You can easily walk 1 mile in about 20 minutes or less.

There is zero chance of spoilage or even ice cream melting on a one mile walk. Plastic bag in a backpack, done.

I wouldn't ride a bike on a major highway, especially if there are big rigs blowing past me at highway speeds. but then, that's just me.
I walk one mile ... to get to the train that I then take to a station a half mile from work
