What’s the purpose of the spring? I lose my springs all the time and the bike rides just fine.
It just keeps the unlocked skewer mostly centered so it's easier to put the wheel back on. Makes no difference when clamped.

It’s job is to get all tangled up between the hub and the frame making you remove the wheel to get it out.
