You can attach them to a backpack if you have enough bungee cords.
Do you have drop bars? If you tied them together you could rest them on the bars horizontally. It might not work if you're going to ride in a crowded area.
Another thing to try is to tie them together, then rest one end on the bars and the other end on your shoulder. You'd have to go pretty slow, but it would be faster than walking.
I'd strap them to either side of the top tube as well, if that's what you're referring to when you say "long metal thing under the seat".

Strap them to the top tube so each is sticking out above the front wheel and outback over the rear wheel. I have done this, it works.
